This place needs Extra safety. The lock (purchased from this facility) was intact but my unit (upstairs) was thoroughly going through by the thieves multiple times. They left with the door locked and the leftover stuff inside the unit. They left without a hurry. I suspect it was done by the insiders. The employees showed no sympathy or surprise, their reactions indicate stealing is a common event there. The location is insecure. Its entry is on a quiet dead-end street. Thieves could wait in their cars near the entry and follow a car into the facility. There is no camera on the second floor. Thieves literally can spend hours there sorting stuff. The Irvine police department will give you a case number, and that's it. For them, personal property crime is not a big deal. read more

This review is for the location on Burroughs in Irvine. First time I've rented storage in OC. The initial move-in went ok, got a good online rate. I've noticed trash gets left behind occasionally but overall it's kept clean. Interior unit is fairly dark. Busy every time I've been there, so finding a trolley to move boxes is a challenge. Most clientele I've encountered have been friendly, however they also warned about break-ins. I was shocked when the cost of storage DOUBLED on my third month. read more

We had our belongings here for a couple of years. We moved out because the price kept increasing. During this time, we experienced a mass break in that although did not affect us, did raise concerns. For the 2nd time in 3 months my unit was broken into- this time though- MGMT didn't even secure the unit with a temporary lock- it was left unlocked and open for 2 days as the break in happened on Christmas Day and I wasn't notified about it until late in the day on 12/26. Don't rent from here ever Very disappointed with how this operation is run. I moved my inventory to this location just under a month ago. I expressly told them that I would be using the storage for business. There were and still are many items that I have in stock that are not properly inventoried and I have been spending more time there than even I had wanted. None the less, I had not been told that there would be limits as to the time I was allowed to be there when I signed up, decided to spend 100s of dollars to rent a truck, take 5 days off of work to facilitate the move. The first time It was suggested to me (remember i just moved under a month ago) that maybe I shouldn't spend so much time there., to which I thought they were kidding because if anyone wanted to get out of there it was me but this is work. The second time, I had been taking photos to list some items and a staff member, in his infinite wisdom, proceeded to give me suggestions on how I could achieve my goals by perhaps lessing my time at the facility. This condescending approach to customers and their affairs is right about at my limit for what I feel to be tolerable. I was there a lot,, I had a lot to do and most if not all had to be done on site. I was frustrated at this point, feeling I was doing the best I could.At the same time, I didn't get into running my own business to be micromanaged by pretentious, invasive staff making me feel bad about doing exactly what I had told them upon signing, I would be doing. This isn't my first storage unit, and I have never had this issue before. The only reason I ever move is because eventually the rent gets raised above what I want to pay. This is the best part, i payed 7 days early, in cash, only to get an email saying thank you for your payment of $0 followed by today, when no less than an hour after getting there my manager, oh no im sorry, I work for myself, The employee so keen on knowing what is and isn't necessary for my business comes up to me to advise me that I have 72 hours to vacate. WHAT!!! I ask why, Im told that the decision has been made by the district manager, patty and tells me they will refund my payment. I ask him again why and this is what I was told: 1: I spend to much time there (unreasonable amount of time is the supposed violation. who decides what unreasonable is unknown as it is not detailed in the lease or anywhere else for that matter, they also said I was Loitering which I found hysterical as the sole reason of my being there is to get work done, I took smoke breaks every few hours maybe that was it.) 2: I come after I know the office is closed when I know noone is there 3: when moving from an extraspace up the street I "stole" a cart and left it at there facility. #1 I think I have already addressed #2 If I make a sale or need to post a package in the morning ill come anytime between 6-10 like the access hours my lease specified allows me. The Idea that I care at all what their schedule is, is beyond me. I am far to busy with my own crap to worry about what there offices hours are. Furthermore It to me suggests they think im doing something inappropriate after there offices hours which with an onsite livei-n manager who patrols the facility during all hours, would be of concern. The fact is, he never got around to explaining that part after I continuously asked what was wrong with being there during the posted access times #3 the most inconsequential but my favorite, I had asked the manager when I had rented my truck, if dollys got switched would that be an issue. I was told no, it would not. I will fully admit that at the end of it all, there may have been a +1 at this location at the end of it all a matter that I would have happily resolved had it been brought to my attention (I dont know how many dollys there should be) Instead I get a head shake as if I just farted in church shame shame shame WOW Great customer service. To wrap it up, as far as I can tell extraspac's lease dose allow for operator to terminate at will for any reason WITH A 15 DAY WRITTEN NOTICE. a 72 hour notice to vacate is a made up policy and illegal in CA. The only applicable 72 hour notice would be for a timeframe in which you would need to Pay, or correct a violation of your lease, such as "you have 72 hours to remove the 20 gallon drums of gasoline from your unit as it violates your leasing agreement to not store flammables or face eviction." When I spoke with the District manager, Patty, she had no interest in hearing what I had to say and was more concerned on how and when I was leaving. when I asked how, after 2 comments from staff about how much time I spend there, that they just jump to eviction. (I took the comments as requests as I had seen nothing in the lease about a limit in terms of time spent there) She said they had no obligation to give me any warning. GREAT POLICY. This company does not have your interests at the top or even in there list. read more

Shady business. It's been about 4-5 months since I've been a Extra Space customer. I just received a notice in the mail that my monthly rate will be increasing from $147 to $167 month---that's nearly 14% ! Funny they never mention that when you sign up. Avoid this place or make sure that you are aware that they're going to gouge you after you sign up. A 3-5% rate increase is expected after a year but ~14% after a few months? I'll be looking elsewhere and moving before the rate increase is effective on Oct. 30th. read more

No one I spoke with at the facilty today knew who Jim R. (The owner/manager according to this reply?) is. I think it is very unprofessional to give me a generic toll free #, so I will have to deal with the frustration of a phone tree, when I have already dealt with the frustration stress and upset of two break-ins! How about you have someone call me. You can access my account info. Actually this doesn't surprise me though, as this is the kind of attention I would expect from a facilty that was aware that at least 35 of its units had a faulty lock which could be opened even when locked (I saw the list and spoke to the maintenance team there today), yet took about a week or more to get maintance out to fix the problem, with no added security in the interim, which was when my unit was broken into for the second time!!! No follow-up either from District Manager Letty who said she would review security cameras after my first break in. The only silver lining to all this is that so much of my property has been stolen, that I no longer have need for this terrible facility! Do not do business here! Renting for 3 months and they raised my rent by $15.00! Me thinks that this is a VERY large increase! They get you in at a low rate and then hit you with the increase. You went through the work of putting your stuff in their storage unit and the thought of having to relocate to another storage facility is something most of us just don't want to do. Having rented storage units for many years, I must rate Extra Space Storage at 1 Burroughs in Irvine at the very top. I would also have to rate Kevin and his team at the very top, as well. The monthly rentals were the best in the area, the move-in process was quick and easy, and the facility is very safe and clean. The person below obviously didn't ask any questions. All places do the insurance thing. HOWEVER, if you have renters or home insurance, your stuff will likely be covered by your insurance company. Call to confirm it, thats what I did. You bring in your insurance form and you don't need to pay for the insurance. This place is right next to the public storage and is $20 cheaper a month for the same size. Only difference is Public Storage has AC. I put my stuff in at the end of June, the building wasn't that bad. Maybe 78 degrees. I went there to check on it last weekend, middle of August, not that bad. I wasn't uncomfortable or anything. I was able to use my own padlocks. Some places (public storage) use a special lock so you pretty much need to buy their $20 lock. The girl working there was really chill and remembered my name two weeks after I stopped in to check prices and whatnot, I was very surprised. It's in a good area and there is plenty of space to load and unload. This was an easy choice price and location wise. Right off the 5 freeway. read more
