Our experience turned what we expected to be a straightforward move into a stressful and costly nightmare. We chose Hello Movers after seeing their good online ratings. Following an in-home and storage-unit inspection, we received an estimate of $7,322 for our move from Florida to Dothan, Alabama. As moving day approached, the estimates began increasing. Despite originally discussing two trucks and two days, they arrived with one truck and three workers. After working until 11 p.m. and still not completing the load, they provided a new estimate of approximately $13,000. At delivery, the crew arrived with two trucks but worked only briefly before sending two workers away. After several hours, only about half of one truck had been unloaded. We were then told we had to pay $8,100 immediately, bringing the total to approximately $14,838, or they would stop unloading. Because most of our belongings were still on the trucks, I offered an additional $5,000 while we worked out the disputed charges. The company refused and left with our household goods and personal documents. We contacted the police, but they considered it a civil matter and could not force the movers to unload our property. We believe their refusal to continue unloading after we offered to pay an additional $5,000 violated the FMCSA 110% rule for non-binding estimates. FMCSA guidance states that movers generally cannot require payment of more than 110% of a non-binding estimate at delivery and must relinquish the shipment when the required amount is tendered. (FMCSA) We ultimately had to settle for $6,200 more, including redelivery from Orlando several days later. From our perspective, this was a classic bait-and-switch experience: a very attractive initial estimate followed by repeated increases and, ultimately, our belongings being withheld when we disputed the final amount. We were left without beds, clothing, cookware, computers, TVs, and personal belongings in an empty house. Based on our experience, we would not recommend Hello Movers. If you are planning a move involving Florida, I strongly encourage you to get everything in writing, preserve every estimate, and carefully consider other moving companies before making your decision.
