I went to their website and locked a 4 x 4 unit that, according to the website, it was a web special priced at $57 a month with the first month half-off. I got a confirmation email from Extra Storage stating that my only payment upon showing up at the office should be of $38. What is my surprise when I show up at the facility on Folsom Street, I'm being charged $58 and according to the manager named Ed Salazar those $20 extra where admin fees that were not listed on the website. I'm thinking to myself 'I'm here already, it's just one time, let's just be done with it so I can drop my stuff. Next day I get an email from Extra Storage with a PDF version of my contract. Upon going through it, I see an addendum regarding insurance and the addendum stated that I had agreed to use their insurance service at $10 a month.I was never even told there was insurance furthermore, I was not even walked through the different options of insurance. It's not about charging insurance, it's about not revealing that there's a charge for it, it's about not introducing the subject of insurance at any point during the entire conversation, it's about keeping it hidden and because of this, I don't know what else it's been kept hidden, therefore I cannot trust their services. Nothing absolutely nothing of the process of locking the unit with Extra Storage, showing up at their facility, going to the unit or going thru the contract, absolutely nothing inspired trust. All in all, I lost $58 but compared to the stories of other people, that I have read on Yelp I think I walked away from what could have been bigger losses. So much for trying to support local businesses. I will follow up with a formal complaint to the consumer protection unit at the SF DA's Office. All these complaints about feeling and being scammed by Extra Storage should be investigated. read more

If no one is at the front desk, you can call the number on the sign and they'll answer and help you with what you need (a cart, access to recycling, etc). Parking is free and easy if you can find a spot! Overall, it works well for our needs. Off-hours access would be great, but understand that it's not possible right now. read more

My experience with this location has not been great, I rented a locker but quickly moved out. I think they can manage how their customers are using these space, I think many of them are using it more than just storage. 2 times I stopped by I can see people almost using it as "living space", price is cheaper than these around this area, but you got what you paid for, I guess. read more

Update: Moved out since they've increased my rent 50% in the past 2 years; I got yet another rent increase notification so I left. Overall they're much more aggressive about this than other storage companies I've used. Also, recall that when I arrived they did not have the space that I had reserved, and they force-upsold me to a more expensive unit. This seems to be consistent practice, judging from similar reviews posted here. I would especially dis-recommend this place to anyone who needs to move here from out-of-town, since they will trick you into getting a more expensive unit out of necessity. Since they close so early, the high price is not worth it in any case. Today I hired movers and went to a cheaper place in a safer location with 24/7 access (this part of Folsom St. is pretty ghetto). In addition, this facility shuts down fairly often due to events on Folsom St, construction, etc. They give advance warning, but it's pretty inconvenient. The short hours on the weekend are the worst since they are closed during the week when I get back from work. Workers there usually seem pretty unhappy. I don't blame them -- they have to deal with a lot of sketchy characters wandering in off the street who probably live in these storage units. The place I moved to today has a much more positive vibe. It's not the very worst option, but there are better. (Final little annoyance: to log into the website to your account, you have to type username, password, and ALSO select your state and then select the SF location from a HUGE list. The customer service rep who handled my sign-up process was great (his name is Matthias) but he's the only friendly staff I've run into at this place. There's one woman in particular who's borderline rude (why work in customer service if you don't want to interact with customers?). The storage space is okay, but the length of the contract seems excessive for renting a simple storage unit. I also never received the reimbursement I was promised for the remainder of the last month after I cleared out my unit - I called twice and each time I was assured that a check was being sent. Eight months later, there's still no sign of it. They still owe me over $100. I do not recommend using this place unless there are no other options. read more

I've never rented another storage company so I have nothing to compare it to. I've had my storage unit for a little over a year and recently I received my 3rd notice for a raise in rent. When I first rented the unit it was $72. Then it went up to $77....then $84.....now it's going to $90! That's a 25% increase in 1 year! Needless to say, I will be looking for somewhere else to store my things. read more

So although everyone is nice there, I felt like I was bamboozled into renting a bigger space for more money. I reserved for a space with tee special first months free but when I got there, they showed me the space and there was this Giant round pillar (holding up the building) in the middle of the space. Needless to say, I asked if they had another. I was then shown a bigger space which was nice but there was no special other than half off $260 for the first month. Why would you think someone wants to rent a "SPACE" that has a huge pillar in the middle of the space?!? So although they were nice to find me another space and did not comp the same special advertised for the Pillar-Space, I think the experience could have been better. read more

After making a reservation for a storage unit online and following up with a phone call with a couple of inquiries, Mike put all of my questions to rest and assured me that the unit was confirmed and if I ended needing additional space the day of (since I was not certain if the unit I booked was able to hold all our items), that would not be a problem. I ended up in the area the next day and wanted to visually see the space I booked online and Mike took the time to show me the unit as well as additional units that might suit our need. He's professional and a joy to work with and assisted with the paperwork/contract effortlessly. I was in and out in no time. read more

I didn't have a lot of reason to interact with the staff for the month that I had things stored there (when I was unexpectedly between apartments), but everyone I dealt with were helpful and worked with me. If I had been there longer or dealt with them more I'd have more to say but everything I saw was 'A-OK' (3 stars). It did seem like there were homeless people around and probably with units there but they didn't seem like they were there to cause problems so I don't begrudge that. read more

My camper trailer was stolen from their storage with coded access and cameras; one pointed at my trailer. I had a ball hitch lock and wheel lock on the trailer that the employees had access to. After several months they have agreed to pay back over payment but they have/had no responsibility for the theft of my trailer. Basically they told me that I was at fault for trusting them with anything of value. They do not even call the police when they get robbed; they wait awhile and call you and tell you to do it. They get paid and have no responsibility except to send you a bill; I dont think I have ever paid so much for so little. read more

I second Zac H's thoughts. I have now been a customer of extra space storage for over 1 year. The rental rate contract I signed was for $113/month. Within the past year, my rate has been raised to $125 and now to $138/month. As I am living abroad, I am stuck. If you call Extra Space, do not expect any compassion - they write that they can raise the price in the contract you must sign. All I can say is this doesn't give me the impression of being a valued customer. The storage facility itself is acceptable but I would not feel extremely comfortable storing things of value. On both my visits to my unit, I have seen the same "customers" using the storage space as a daily home base to charge their phones and switch out the contents of laundry carts. read more

I have stored with extra space storage for over five years now and i can say that they are the best in the biz!! They are fair and honest with everyone they serve , and they are always willing to help. When i started here The Manager was Mark he was very helpful and fair and always willing to work on solutions to those issues that arise . The current staff are the most professional group of people i ever encountered!! Mike the new manager took over for Mark and didn't miss a beat, he's friendly , intelligent , and skilled in working with people and giving enough of his time and experience to make things work for the greater good!! Of course he was shown the ropes by Lita the assistant manager who helped him through the training. Lita is devoted to this place , she pours her heart and soul and wisdom into this place from open till close and does not play around when it comes to her career. Kaylee is a model of service and is a pleasure to have known , with her sweet pleasant phone voice and polite manners she is a rare gem in an edgy city!! mattious the newest addition to the crew is a perfect gentlemen he helps everyone and everyone is happy!! Bottom line , if you want storage to be an effortless pleasant experience and not a burden go with extra space for there is none better anywhere!!! Public storage steal from their clients by default, Extra space would rather you get your things and allow you to do so even if your bill is past due. ***Disclaimer: Horror story!*** I used Extra Space storage two times in five years. First time I needed the space for 3 months to re-organize my apartment. That worked well. When I left, they asked if I would ever use the service again, and I said yes. Big mistake! The place is basically a half-way point for the homeless from wherever they shower and wherever they live. This place has no guarantee there isn't someone in your things, or stinking all over the small space right next to your door. I used Extra Space storage another time, and Marc Grub and his cronies basically crawled through my things. Its either that, or the homeless did. Marc Grub told me that the lock had to be replaced. But I didn't believe him. He later told me that all my belongings looked very well kept. I was so creeped out, but I had moved out of town, and at the time was only back to pay my bill. So when I came back the next time to pay, and remove most of my things to move back into my apartment, Marc Grub informed me that my unit had been vandalized again. He told me that some of the more organized affects were in a box. I looked into his beedie little eyes, and I saw a lie there. This place is a den of thieves and lies. If I wasn't taking care of business out of town for a few months, and just moving back in, I would have informed the police, and/or become very angry. But you can't work and be angry at the homeless and/or managers of your local storage. The public storage down the street got bad reviews, but I would use them instead if I ever needed to be out of town for a while. Even better, why not go out of the county where its quieter--and there are less homeless. read more

ExtraSpace is the WORST -- save yourself having to deal with their dishonesty and disorganization and go somewhere else. I've had two separate terrible experiences with them, and am sorry I did not learn from my first mistake. The first clue should be that their website only gives the length and width of the unit, not the height. Here is a company that rents out three dimensional space, but only tells you two dimensions. Wondering how much space I would actually get, I used their online chat feature, and the representative told me 4x4 units were 8-10 feet high. I asked if she was sure, and she assured me they were no less than 8 feet. Satisfied, I booked the unit online for $57/month, got a Zipcar, packed it up, and drove over. After being completely ignored at the counter for 5 minutes, I was shown a wooden box 5 feet high. Telling them I had booked a 4x4x8, they said there was no such thing, and that the sales people have no idea about individual locations. They made absolutely no effort to help me until I called the 800 number and talked to a manager. He, of course, said there was nothing he could do, but would send a message to the district manager, who didn't work on weekends. At this point, they offered me a 4x4x6 unit for $87 that was up 11 steps. And on and on, absolutely useless and unhelpful. To operate the only elevator in the place, you have to type your code into one keypad, then walk to the other side and push the elevator button. The light on the elevator button is broken, and they say the button is a little finicky so you have to press it a bunch of times -- so you never know if the elevator is actually coming, if you managed to massage the button correctly, so you stand there for 10 minutes waiting for it. The walkways are so narrow that the carts don't fit around corners, meaning your stuff will all fall off as you try to maneuver. When I was being ignored at the counter, they were freaking out about not being able to find two different people's driver's licenses, which you have to leave in order to use the carts. Then in the elevator, one employee told me they lost someone's DL the other day, but luckily found it in the trash can. And this being San Francisco, there are homeless people all over inside of the secure area (probably customers, granted). read more

This Extra-Storage has this terrible suck-ass problem, that is the gate opening / closing code does not work properly and it really sucks for many miserable customers there. This is the first time we moved in this Extra-Space storage, i mean if we know ahead of time this issue, we probably decided differently that we would not chose this one. They gave us the code for opening the gate and another for closing We drove our big truck in. The code did not work for opening the gate, so we get stuck outside with our big truck because it was after 5pm so no people at the office to fix the problem, we thought we got stuck and did not know what to do yet. Luckily, there was another person, he could open the gate with his code. So, we can get in. Then, i saw another customer who also could not open the gate with their code. Then, another one. They both left the storage because they did not wait for someone to help. But,we try to finish unloading our stuffs, then when we drove our truck out to the exit gate, our code still did not work either. So, we could not get in and could not get out with our own codes! We sat for a while in hope someone would help us to get out. One woman could got in earlier now also could not get out with her code like us, so now we have "companion" for waiting some other customers could help us to get out! We were waiting for a while, luckily, there was a guy driving out, we told him that we all could not open the gate with our own codes. He said he as a special code that he could open, he did, I wonder what does it mean when some customer has "special code" and other do not and so some customers have trouble about the gate opening/closing! This is terrible. then, we still had to return the next day, Sunday to finish what we were doing in our new unit. The code still did not work for use opening the gate. So, we still had to wait for some lucky customer, we did. But, after that, i saw one guy who complaint that he had drove for forty minutes to his storage now and he could not use his code to open the storage gate! So, here comes another victimized customers! Then, we finally try to get out with the same trick. We and one guy has to wait for some luck again. We did. When we just get out of the exit gate. I saw one more woman who could not get in with her code. So, it is obvious, their entrance/exit gate HAS SERIOUS PROBLEMS ABOUT THE OPENING/CLOSING GATE ON SO MANY VICTIMIZED CUSTOMERS while they still work fine with other customers ! But, that is already a horrible problem for those victimized customers including us ! THEY MUST FIX THIS PROBLEMS ! THEY MUST FIX THEIR CODES OF ENTRANCE AND EXIT GATE ! Besides, this gate problems, i heard some issue about rate raising after a while you rent their storage! So, i can see now that we may choose a wrong place, but nevertheless, we are already in this storage so we want to improve their service better so we and other victimized customers are happier here. We hope this serious complaint about their nuisance would reach them and their managers and personnel read our concerns and seriously fix their problem and raise their quality of service for customers. read more

I received a great deal, my son received a referral bonus when I decided to also rent space, we were allowed use of a large truck, and the first month was free. Had a small unit at Extra Space for about a year. Everything about the process of signing up, answering questions, making unscheduled visits and finally, the move out all went very smoothly. We discovered water in the unit (due to heavy rains) and we were immediately provided with another unit. I hate having to store my stuff but since I have to put it someplace I'm glad I am storing it here! Extra Space has been a gift from the Gods! ESS has been able to save my sanity more than once despite my waiting until the last minute before seeking solutions to my issues with extra stuff. I have rented space from other companies so my rating is based on my own personal comparisons and experiences. They have a free moving truck that renters can use to transport the stuff they will be storing from wherever it is. The truck is huge, but was still easy to drive. It has mats and a hand truck/dolly and it really is free except for the fuel you use (under 5 bucks in my case) This feature alone saves money over renting from companies like Uoo-Hall, etc. . I feel safe here...not only for the security of my stuff but for my personal safety as well. I am a 60 y/o female and usually alone when I'm dealing with my space. I never worry. There is video surveillance that is motion activated and seriously monitored for the security of the customer's stuff and for the health and safety of the customers themselves while they are accessing their units. I was impressed at the quick response by the manager, Mike G. to a woman whom I heard later, may have had a seizure. While this was the type of response one would consider to be the expected action to take, it is my observation that in today's apathetic society, there are many people who will often ignore the need of others because they don't have time to concern themselves or get involved. . The facility is clean and it smells clean. I have seen no evidence of any tiny hairless tailed livestock or crunchy, multi legged creepy crawlies. There are no restrictions to the time you can spend at your unit. My former storage facility allowed only 30 minute visits, two times a day and there were many occasions I really needed more time. I don't have to rush here which is great! They have a bazillion different space configurations...one is sure to meet your needs. There is a separate freight elevator available to use if you have a lot of boxes and or large items. You can load everything off of your truck and make one trip instead of waiting and making multiple trips in the regular elevator saving time and possibly avoiding incurring extra charges on your tuck rental. The employees are generally very kind and can help provide suggestions for the best solution to your storage needs. I know Extra Space Storage on Folsom St has been the best for mine. read more

When my movers cancelled the night before (WHO DOES THAT), and it was just me moving everything out of my unit and into a rented van, Leda saved the day. She helped me use the freight elevator so that I was able to get it all moved in just a couple of hours. It really made a difference to me and I am grateful. Not only did she go the extra mile to help me solve my problem, she showed that she cared about me and my business. That's why I'll be back at Extra Space the next time I need storage, even though (as other reviewers have pointed out) they are incredibly aggressive at raising their prices once you're in a unit. read more

I have been renting from extraspace for 4 years. Every 6 months they send me a notice telling me that are raising my rate. I started at $150, and now I am paying $210 per month for a 10x20. Today I asked the new guy next to me (same size unit) how much he is paying and he said "$130!". I was furious. I pulled everything out of my unit and closed my account the same day. They will raise YOUR rates continuously to give the NEW customer a lower rate.... then raise their rates to give the next customer a lower "entry" rate. It's a scam. Don't trust them. read more

They are dishonest, they will scam you, they will take you can pay on one date, then say they never said that, then assess you more fees, then do whatever they can to prevent you from paying so that they can auction off your stuff! I was behind one month and when I went to pay, they told me they would not take my money because paying the full month was only a "partial payment" since I called to pay on the day the new month kicked in. Then they assessed me hundreds of dollars of fees so that I could not afford to pay the entire amount raising what I owed by 3 times, then told me my stuff was going to auction. I had to go above the manager who lied to me and his supervisor about the date he told me I could pay by, then above his manager to corporate threatening legal action in order to pay my past due balance and retrieve my stuff! i have a need for some relatively permanent extra storage. i signed up with these folks in february of 2008. their move-in offer at the time was ten bucks for the first month and then $69 a month. i wanted to get their billing cycle in a similar groove with my credit card billing cycle, so i went in several days before i needed the space so that i could make sure that could happen. i was told i would be able to set up things just as i wanted. i went back on the day i wanted to move in, set up everything with the manager, and moved in my stuff. when they sent me my first bill the due-date was three days earlier than what we had agreed upon. strike one. 4 months later (jul-08) the price increased $6 from 69 to 75. 9 months later (apr-09) the price increased $5 from 75 to 80. 9 months later (jan-10) the price increased $5 from 80 to 85. 6 months later (jul-10) i received another rate increase notice ($5, from 85 to 90). i called the facility and spoke with the manager (the same manager i had talked with in february of 2008). i told him that the rate increases were ridiculous and that i was moving out. he said he would have to check with the district manager but that he was certain he could keep the rate at 85. he said he would call me back in a few days to confirm, a month later, when my bill was due again, i hadn't heard a peep from him. i went in to the facility. he remembered our conversation but said that he hadn't heard from his district manager. he said to pay just the 85 and he would take care of it. i insisted he do that while i waited. he called the district manager and, after some time, confirmed that they would keep my rate at 85. i told him i would move out the next time i received a rate increase. strike 2: frequent rate increases. a side comment on the rate increases: the notices always say they have to increase rates due to "the rising costs associated with providing top-notch service and a clean, secure facility." bullshit. in two years and four months my rate increased by 30%. the cleanliness and security of the facility did not change one iota in that time. did employees get a 30% raise in that time? did utility costs go up by that much? did mortgage costs go up that much? or did corporate management get 30% more greedy during that time? in the middle of 2011 they made some changes to their billing system and ended up double-charging me one month. once again i called the facility and spoke with the same manager. he said that he would have to contact his district manager (sigh) to get it reversed and that he would contact me (sigh) when it was taken care of. i checked my credit card statement regularly and never saw a credit, and after a few weeks of not hearing back from the manager i just contested the double charge with the credit card company. eat the charge-back fee, extra space! strike 3: crappy customer service and no follow-up. in july of 2011 i received another rate increase notice. up $7 from 85 to 92. i moved out at the end of the billing cycle. the place is clean, i'll give them that, and you do need a security code to get in to most areas, but there's lots of piggy backing that goes on. there are also a lot of sketchy people who go in and stay there for long periods of time. i once even saw someone with most of their stuff out of their space so they could sleep in it. about a month after i moved out of extra space i received a letter from them, welcoming me as a new customer and telling me my monthly rate would be $92. talk about a bunch of incompetent boobs. i have written a letter to their ceo about these exact same things but i sincerely doubt they give a damn. i moved into a different facility managed by a different company. i have 30% more space costing me 20% less. their customer service is fantastic and their employees can and do get things done. its almost like i have my own attic. ;-) the net net: avoid extra space storage like the plague. update 26-jan-2012: julie from extra space storage says "I am sorry to hear about your experience. If you ever have any billing issues please contact us at social@extraspace.com and we will make sure those changes are made. If you are storing long term we do provide the option of locking in rates, just contact us at the above e-mail about switching to a long-term lease. Thank you for your feedback.
