A follow-up with a veterinary ophthalmologist confirmed the diagnosis at just six years old. It was devastating. We adopted a dog from the SDHS who was blind & deaf. After all he went through before being rescued, we wanted to get him his sight back. We were referred to them by our eye vet in Kearny Mesa who did cataract surgery on our little rescue Cashew. He told us there are only 3 vet surgeons that do retina surgery in the U.S. so we were lucky we live in San Diego. After this surgery, our boy's right eye retina detatched and was losing sight in it again. It was suggested that they tack the left eye's retina too as precaution. The staff here was friendly. Especially the technitions and the eye vet surgeon Dr. Hoffman. We felt very confident in how they explained things to us, gave us the "good & bad" that could happen. At 1st we had bad news. The vet said the left eye was WAY too swollen to be operated on. Could try another time later on after getting the swelling to go away after treatment. But if any tear happened, the longer you wait, the less likely it could be repaired from what we understood from both eye vets. Boy did we pray all day, as did all our friends for us, that a miracle would happen. And it did. The eye vet called at 3PM and said the left eye swelling went down enough and she WAS able to tack the retina. Our boy can see and boy has it added joy to his life! (The only bad I can say about this place, is the little benches in the lobby and rooms are so uncomfortable if you're sitting for any length of time! Even saw one lady sitting on the concrete floor in the lobby leaning against the uncomfortable benches as it was more comfortable for her.) read more

Dr. Hoffman can make a blind dog see. My Shih Tzu went completely blind suddenly when she was 5 years old (no accident or anything just one day she was bumping into walls!) and we got referred into Dr Hoffman that same week. I am so grateful for that cause I was so incredible worried as you can imagine! Dr. Hoffman assessed my dog and did retinal attachment surgery in both her eyes. It is pricey and at the time pre-Covid it was thousands of dollars. It was a lot of work to put after surgery meds and eyedrops and all that throughout the day, but three weeks later my baby could see!! Her general vet says it's a miracle! I can't thank Dr. Hoffman enough. It's been some time that has passed and my dog had cataract surgery with Dr. Hoffman later on and is now 11 years old and losing her sight again due to older age (which nothing we can do but manage), but I am so glad that for 6 years she was able to see!! We still see Dr. Hoffman occasionally and my dog will have eye ointment/drops for the rest of her life but Dr. Hoffman is really an expert in her field. I thought this journey was going to be a successful one, as I left a good review before, but I feel that I must express my concerns and heart ache with this clinic and displeasure with Dr Hoffman As time went on. Approximately half a year ago, Cody, an 11 year old Maltese with seizures and diabetes went to Eye Care for animals in Pasadena and was seen by Dr Hoffman. After initial tests, she concluded that Cody was a good candidate for cataract surgery. After having cataract surgery, here began the complications, one after the other. Eye pressure, dozens and dozens of medications, eye injury when dr Hoffman said to remove the head cone, vision? Barely as his eyes simply did not do well post surgery. Then the most tragic thing happened. Retinal detachment, first the left eye, then the right. Months and months of all this fiasco and barely being able to work, (medication needed 4 times a day) and after spending around $15,000, Cody ended up being totally blind. It was the same result if I had done nothing to begin with. Health and quality of life is what I was trying to help my best friend and it failed. Ending this review, I wish to tell you about the smug attitude and arrogance of Dr Hoffman. When questioned, she will quickly snap back and act as if the patients should know the technicalities of what's happening and procedures. Not only that but she will look you directly in the eye and not even say hi when you're in the waiting area. What's that? Terrible customer service From the doctor herself. I cannot recommend eye care and dr Hoffman at all. Steer clear. All her experience did nothing for Cody. All of this seems like a huge money grab business. read more

We love this place! Last year Belle had crazy high eye pressure & was given an injection that works effectively for 60-70% of dogs. We were worrying our socks off that it wouldn't work & we would have to consider surgery (which, at her age of estimated 14, may not be practical). Luckily the procedure worked! We came back because her eye bulges sometimes, especially when she is stressed, & fills with blood. We were concerned the eye pressure was up again. However, it was only at a 5, and the expected range is 10-20, I believe. So relieved! We discussed with the doctor how to care for her eye that has an ulcer (she can't really feel it, but we were given eye antibiotics) and a treatment gel that gives relief to both eyes. The male technician was a sweetheart, he was speaking so gently to Belle when he was holding her. It's so sweet when employees treat your dog like they're their own. Overall this place deserves 5 stars for how much they've helped Belle. We were even 30 mins late to our last appointment (we're coming from Long Beach) & this time they were able to still take us. Vet tech, Christian was super gentle and nice to our 15 year old terrier. Dr. Konrade was also very gentle and understanding, as the dog was terrified. The location is very easily situated to the 210 with a large parking lot. The building seems to be mostly Vet Specialists and the actual office is very clean, large, and extremely appealing. Our dog tends to have a rough time on various "slippery" floor surfaces, but it's polished concrete and she had no problems. Our Vet Tech Nadine was spectacular. She went above and beyond to make sure our dog was comfortable and was graciously caring the entire time. We feel very lucky to have found Dr. Konrade. Despite having to do some uncomfortable looking tests on our dog's eye, she somehow managed the complete cooperation of our dog -- who followed her around the suite the rest of the visit. She took the time to explain her diagnoses and potential next steps, and the practice seems to be well equipped to coordinate future care with our normal vet. I'm writing this 1.5 years later (as of Nov. 8, 2023), after she performed cataract removal in both eyes and detached retina surgery in my then-completely-blind dog, Disco. After months of prep, Disco woke up from surgery and could immediately see out of his left eye, and eventually regained sight in his right eye as it healed from the retina procedure. After a very negative experience with our regular veterinary clinic, we are so appreciative of the tender loving care both our baby, and us as parents have received by this team. I write this review for other pet parents that are searching for an eye specialist and want to feel assured they are going to be in good care. You will find this here! Our cat had been experienced a thick cloudiness develop in one of his eyes overnight. We visited our regular vet clinic first and after a little over 2 weeks of being manipulated and not taken care of, we found Eye Care for Animals Pasadena and I would not second guess are choice to stick with them. Dr. Kaminsky and a few of her incredible nurses helped us figure out what tests were absolutely necessary to find a solution for his eye(while discovery his high blood pressure & assisting with that as well). We ended up having to remove his eye, which of course we were nervous for him especially as he is FIV positive, and they held our hand graciously along each step of the way. About a week after his surgery, he experience a mild seizure at about 10pm at night. I called their emergency line for guidance and within 15 minutes, the emergency line nurse had our doctor texting me to guide me through next times. We texted for about 15/20 minutes to assure my son would be ok through the night and I'm so incredibly grateful! I took my dog to her regular vet and they saw her cataracts and discovered a possible lens luxation. They recommended my dog see an ophthalmologist and of course being that I want my dog to be comfortable and live a long healthy life, I followed their advice. I found Eye Care for animals and made an appointment. The receptionist was informative and gave me a ball park price for the tests Penny would need. Once at our appointment, the office was beautiful and clean. The vet techs were friendly and caring towards my dog. Doctor Konrad treated Penny and did a great job. We took our old boy in because he had a chronic infection in his eye. It would get better, then worse, until it eventually looked so swollen and bulged so badly we thought it might rupture before we could get him to help. Fortunately, they were able to see him right away, and the doctor expressed that there was a non invasive treatment we could try, but was honest enough to say that she had little hope it would work for any length of time. We ended up opting for removal of the eye since it was completely non-visual. They did his surgery that day. I picked him up the same day, with detailed instructions for after care. A week later, his stitches came out, and he has been a different dog! We see far more tail wags than we have in years - poor old guy, it must have been bothering him much more than we realized. The doctor was so kind and compassionate. She texted me for updates on his progress, and answered all my questions. Our dog is so much happier, and he looks adorable. He's a Lhasa Apso, and now he looks like a little rag doll with a button missing. He's no longer in pain, and his recovery was very quick and easy. Erica, the tech, was really sweet and built rapport with my dog right away. As for the pricing, I can't complain, they were transparent when I called to schedule so I knew going in. The consult price includes the tonometry and corneal stain. I had seen another vet (general vet/non ophtho) that also performed the corneal stain and they did not clearly explain what was going on and didn't provide a solution. The doctors seem to push surgical procedures that will not help and are unnecessary. On some MAYBE factors. As if we're all celebrities with millions of dollars. We're all hard working people who love our dogs and places like this seek to take advantage of that. Then there's the front desk staff. Many people have already talked about Wendy. Jessica told me she didn't know why Wendy was so rude at 10am on a Wednesday morning. Yet if you read the reviews you'll see this person is chronically unprofessional and rude to clients. So WHY is this clinic still allowing this person to interact with clients who have sick dogs? It is intentional and shows no regard to the patients. I went in yesterday to pick up my dog's eye meds(100+ dollars for 2 meds) and Wendy was literally glaring at me. I never got an apology or anything. These people do not care. So do not respond on here as if you're concerned or care because it's clear you do not. I spoke with Jessica about Wendy and she told me, "we need to just focus on your dog's eye care." No YOU need to find adequate staff to interact with your PAYING clients. And learn to apologize when you're wrong! I saw several reviews saying that their dog's surgeries were botched. We were told by an Urgent Care vet that our dog has glaucoma and that we needed to see a specialist ASAP. I called this place and they said their regular appointments were booked for a month but to come in at 1pm, but we might have to wait hours to be seen. We took it. We were just glad to be seen. We got there at 12:50 prepared to wait for however long it took. To our happy surprise we got in at 1:05. The doctor came and after some testing said he didn't have glaucoma, but a corneal ulcer. I can't imagine what would have happened to his eye if we didn't get in when we did. We would have been treating him for the wrong thing, and who knows how bad the ulcer would have gotten. We were impressed also with how clean the place is, and how all the workers were very kind to us and our dog. Loved the vet who treated him too. read more

AVOID IT! Most importantly save your time and money. One star just for the veterinary assistant, who did okay. The veterinarian (Dr. Hoffman) failed to do any of the promised examinations! She was rushed with her fake smile, which reminded me of Jack Nicholson from The Shining (creepy). You would assume that because my consultation and exam cost $300, the doctor would take care of all of that. However, in my instance, she neglected to do any of it, likely more concerned with her vacation plans than with my dog's eye. The front desk staff is super sweet and welcoming! They noticed my dog was a bit nervous and offered me a towel to wrap her in and said that it usually calms them down. My dog had a bad experience in another canine eye specialist during the initial exams but the vet tech that assisted Dr. Brianna Bergen was amazing at handling my Savannah. Dr. Bergen did not put my baby through any unnecessary stress which was very helpful. The drs explanation was detailed and answered every question I had. We drove down from the bay area in early July to have my one year old cocker spaniel have his retina reattached, and to have a cataract removed from the other eye. From the first moment of meeting, Dr. Hoffman, she was extremely professional, and very personal. We are now almost 6 months out from the surgery, and my dog can chase his ball and see clearly with both eyes it is truly a miracle. Brought my bully here with an eye ulcer. I was not allowed in. They took him in alone. Vet said this type of ulcer can only be cured with an eye surgery. Surgery cost was about $2,300.00. I declined and took my bully home. Exactly one week later he was hacking his lungs out. I took him to my local vet and my bully was diagnosed with a slight fever and kennel cough. Hmm, I wonder were he could have gotten the kennel cough from. The local vet also looked at his eye. I told him that the eye Vet had told me this eye ulcer is only cured with a surgery. The local vet said no, this eye ulcer will cure by itself. He told me to leave it alone and don't allow my bully to irritate it. He was given antibiotics for his kennel cough. About 2 weeks later my bully was cured of his kennel cough and his eye got better and better. Fast forward a couple of months. My bullys eye is cured. No surgery needed. read more
