My very affectionate boy kitty Nermal had his left eye removed before I adopted him. I love him to death. He started having issues about 6 months after adoption where the socket would swell and at times drain blood and liquid. His regular vet referred me to Eye Care for Animals since it started recurring more frequently wanted to ease his discomfort while fixing the issue. I just came back tonight from his consult with Dr Keith Collins to discuss a plan. In this last instance of abscess with the socket his wound was open because the scar tissue was obsolete. I was reassured that having it open was okay since he was on antibiotics and it was better to air it out than close it up. I was blown away by this doctor and his staff. I know most pet parents want to try and help calm their pet when being restrained for treatment but I followed the directives and sat while they worked. Heather did a wonderful job asking me how Nermal dealt with being handled and specifically tailored her approach to avoid his "alligator rolling". After the exam Dr Collins sat on the floor and played with Nermal while explaining the rare complication from the original eye removal where tissue is left behind and creates fluid build up. I would highly recommend this facility based off my initial experience and the VERY reasonable estimate for surgery. Their compassion for my baby and thoroughness was awesome!! read more

I've been holding off on writing this review to not give this review with the emotions I felt the day of taking my cat Calypso for surgery. If you do not read my full review please know that the risk for surgery/anesthesia/after care possible problems is not discussed unless you ask directly and the after care after losing an animal here is horrible. From the first appointment I scheduled I felt comfortable with Dr. Gunderson but now looking back at it I definitely missed a few things. This is the first time I have ever had to have a surgery for any of my animals so I did not know everything and I don't feel I was provided with the information I needed to be. Calypso was diagnosed with post traumatic sarcoma from an incident that happened with our shelter dog when we first got her. Dr Gunderson stated that without removing the eye he would develop glaucoma and possibly a tumor that would kill him. During this appointment she never talked about the process of anesthesia, the risk, the surgery itself or potential aftercare and she seemed very confident in the surgery and didn't say anything other then that. Fast forward to the day of surgery, me and my partner were anxious about the surgery and the nurse we spoke to threw us off completely. She spoke very loud, was giggly and did not seem to take the surgery as serious as it was. She never mentioned the risk with the surgery or any details, the only information we had was on the paper we signed asking if we want them to take extra measures if anything happens during surgery/ the form that says the hospital is not liable if something happens during surgery. I didn't feel confident leaving our cat but we did because the Dr stated he would need this surgery to prevent pain/suffering in the future and we felt Dr. Gunderson seemed confident enough to trust. We were very anxious and tried to continue our day. We got a call a little bit after dropping off Calypso that his labs were normal but something was off with his white blood cells, the nurse told my partner that if it was her she would continue the surgery because its so minor that it could be a glitch in their system. We told them to continue with the surgery. Very shortly after we get a call that as soon as they put the anesthesia in Calypso went straight into cardiac arrest, the Dr. called us crying and told us they were trying to resuscitate him for 20 minutes and still no heart beat. The Dr said this has never happened to her in her career and said we could do an necropsy and I asked if this would be an expensive additional cost and she stated she would try to do it for free or not too much of a cost. When we got there she told us the cost was $700 for the necropsy and around $1,500 if we wanted the necropsy for legal purposes. After discussing with my partner we decided not to go down that road because we didn't know if knowing if she did something wrong would help us heal. We don't know if he was given the wrong dosage or what really happened that day. When we got there we had time to say goodbye to our Calypso, we took our time and when it was time to talk about decisions we decided to have him cremated and we wanted the ashes and an ern. Dr Gunderson gave us the prices for Blue Pearl Hospital and asked if we wanted her to take him to Blue Pearl, we said yes because we couldn't imagine taking our cats lifeless body across town on our own. As we are about to leave she comes back and tells us she thinks we should take him to make sure all paperwork is signed with Blue Pearl and payment is made. I held our lifeless cat in my hands in the car all the way across town. This was one of the hardest parts, with this review I hope you keep in mind that they will say everything to make you feel comfortable but will not speak about the procedure process unless you directly ask them. I would personally not recommend this place. read more

This is a very late review, but it's coming up on our Toy Manchester Terrier Jack's birthday on May 30. Jack lived to be over 17 years old and he passed in 2011. Dr Collins was recommended by Dr Sam Vainisi as Jack had cataracts that left him essentially blind. Jack was 13 years old at the time of surgery and the cataracts had progressed to the point that surgery was nearly impossible to restore eyesight. Dr Collins could only operate on one of his eyes as there was no possibility to perform surgery on the other due to severe hardening of the cataract. The surgery was successful and sitting in the waiting room for approximately 6 hours we were surprised when a jack let out a bark when he actually saw another dog in the waiting room. My wife and I both cried. Jack had a wonderful last 4 years of quality life due to Dr Collins miracle. Thank you belatedly and here's to more miracles by Dr Collins. read more

Not sure who this is going to reach but I want to send a personal Thank You to Dr. B Keith Collins and his staff in your Pewaukee, WI office. My wife and I had brought in our Saint Bernard, Spinot, for an eye injury/infection. Dr. Collins and his staff were as gracious and understanding as a Saint Bernard's heart. They got his eye just about back to normal until his bone cancer progressively took over a few days after his care with Dr. Collins and we had to send him to the Rainbow Bridge. Although Dr. Collins and his staff were only part of Spinot's life for a few days, they were able to make his last few days as comfortable as peaceful as they could. I couldn't give enough Thank You's or hugs to show how much it meant to me and my wife. read more

We took our conure in this morning so that Dr. Collins could evaluate an eye issue. We were *very* pleased with both his open and caring attitude toward our girl and his willingness to explain what he and his intern found. The tech was *fabulous* w/our bird! I have brough many different animals in to see Dr Collins, I was so sad to hear he retired. Among other things, Dr Collins took care of my Chinchlla 's recurring eye infections, thankfully he hasn't had one for 5 or 6 years. Dr Collins was so kind and concerned, you could tell he really loved animals and they loved him back, I hope he is enjoying a great retirement. He was a very special vet and put the animals wellbeing as first priority. He even helped treat a kitten for me on a Saturday. Like a said, I will miss him. read more

I am so grateful for this place! The staff and clinic are wonderful! Every staff member was friendly and professional. The whole clinic smelled and looked neat and clean. My potentially temperamental cat acted so comfortable and happy here and was obviously well cared for by both the techs and Dr. Collins. I would not take my pet to this clinic and especially not Dr. Erin Gunderson. My dog Barney needed cataract surgery and I was assured by Dr. Gunderson he would be fine having the surgery as long as I followed her instructions. Those instructions included having a board certified cardiologist perform an echocardiagram on Barney and at an additional expense, fly her friend in from Arizona who is a board certified anesthesiologist. The surgery was performed at their offices in Pewaukee but Dr. Gunderson would not contact a local anesthesiologist to assist in the surgical procedure so I paid the airfare and additional expenses for her college friend to come to Pewaukee! Even after all of this extra care Barney died. In a voicemail to me Dr. Gunderson admitted to administering the wrong medication for Barney resulting in kidney failure and his death! She also stated in that voicemail that she will be more careful in the future. I encourage you to look elsewhere so your pet doesn't suffer the way Barney did. read more

One of Guinea pigs eyes looked awful a while back and I took her to a vet in greenfield and they told me there was nothing I could do and my pig would be blind in that eye forever. After I said I would do anything to help my pig. They suggested I take her to eye care for animals in pewaukee. The doctor was not used to seeing small animals, but she still did every test she could on my piggy while I was there and showed me what was wrong right away. I got the medicine my piggy needed right away and in a few days she was back to normal. All together for the visit, the tests, and the meds, it was $150. For a specialty vet clinic that doesn't usually work with small animals, that was a great price in my eyes. I definitely will return if any of my animals have an eye problem!!! read more

We have been taking our dog to Eye Care for Animals for years. Dr. Collins, all of the vet techs, Lisa and other front desk person are exceptional. There have been two occasions where our dog had an emergency eye problem. Each time was on a Sunday and each time Dr. Collins and a vet tech met me at the clinic even though it was closed. We did pay extra but, it was worth every penny. I am so grateful for this clinic and Dr. Collins. read more

Dr. Collins worked a miracle with my young cockapoo shortly after we adopted him. He is truly a miracle worker, as I was sure the injured eye would not be able to be saved. My beautiful soulmate Sam continues to live a happy life with two eyes and is an absolute treasure. The dvm is great but Lisa at the front counter a witch. I would not go back there if doc not good. Totally uncooperative at even faxing our insurance in. Said they would be middle man. Wrong. The front counters makes such a difference. I wonder if doctors know this. read more
