It's quite a large location with a lot to offer. They have an outdoor section to the right and the Christmas or seasonal items to the left. When you are on the left side, you will see a door that leads to the greenhouse. A good variety of plants, succulents, trees, indoor pots, etc. you can really take your time here. The value is on the higher end if you do end up purchasing here, but at least they have the variety so you're not just looking at a handful of species. You can really just take your time choosing what works best for you. It also helps that a huge brewery is across the street. You can hit two birds with one stone. read more

Cashier, an older white lady, wasn't knowledgeable about a plant and I had questions. Rather than asking someone who works there, who had more knowledge, to help, she was dismissive. She had an attitude about my asking questions. I usually go to the location in Kennsingtom. Staff there seem much more knowledgeable and welcoming. On a side note- I observed what appeared to be fungus gnats flying around some of the plants. Also, in general their plants seemed overpriced. Cannot recommend this location and won't be returning! The lady who picks up the phone has a horrible impatient attitude to customers. She seems to either be overwhelmed or not care what customers want, or she has no idea how to handle customers. She will usually hand the phone to her employees. I mean you can shop here but don't expect them to be nice and get your order exact like you said. also, be sure once you order to give them the order number, or they'll be mad at you....i gave this place an actual chance and was very grateful, and the flowers delivered were not the most attractive, suprised me. i didnt even realize it was my order till i looked closer at it and was embarrassed in front of all my relatives. My aunt and her family were very offended, and i had no defense. i had no idea what to say or do. im not ordering here again but i will say i did try to be super nice, before i changed my mind about their quality. i waired a whike to give this review and i still wonder if i can change my mind, but with the person answering phones in such an impatient way i dont think is redeemable for the business. Still one of our great store for outdoor plants. Depending on the delivery one can find the almost perfect plant. Great boutique with a wide selection of unique decors. Christmas season was always our favorite. Looking forward what to expect for 2020 Holiday decors. Landscaping rocks was also our favorite nursery stops. They made an arrangement for me, and they truly did do a very beautiful job arranging it.... However, I gave them a budget for the arrangement and I they severely under delivered for the dollar amount I spent and I wish I had been more communicative in what my expectations were. Frankly, i'm shocked at what they charge me for a few of these Lillie's and a bunch of filler flowers... I live in Los Angeles, and would've paid far less here for something like this... so I feel cheated. Again, this is lovely, but worth just over half of what I paid. read more

This place was packed last Saturday afternoon! I must say, they know how to keep their plants and flowers happy. They had row after row of fragrant flowers with bright and colorful blooms. They had massive choices of colors for all types of plants. Unfortunately for me, they didn't have the climbing flowering vine I was searching for, and the worker said hey wouldn't be getting any more in. I did get one pot of purple super bells that I needed to balance my container pot with. The place I went to previously only had one purple pot left. I also needed fresh, organic soil and Johnson's had that. A 16 quart bag was $10.99. It was just enough for all my planting needs. Employees here are helpful and knowledgeable. They offer classes and you can earn Johnson bucks with every $25.00 you spend. read more

Johnson's has been my family's favorite nursery since I was a kid. Usually I buy my mom flowers for her garden for Mother's Day, but now I live across the country (and wouldn't be able to visit due to shelter in place orders anyway), so I ordered a gift card her. I wasn't sure when to expect it to arrive. Not only did it come just a few days after I ordered, but they HAND DELIVERED it to her house and even hand wrote the note that I included, I had assumed it would just be printed. Although overpriced there are a few things I like to get at the Olney Johnson's but each time I go (over the course of 15 years) I have to steel myself to endure the worst customer service ever. Something always goes wrong at the register, there is no sense that anyone in the store is focused on the customer but rather those on duty are blabbing to one another, on the phone, and/or are generally scattered and inefficient. There is no sense that a mature, responsible person is in charge. At times, I have encountered a helpful person in the greenhouse but rarely. They used to have a wonderful Christmas store but it is being phased out. My last visit was so enraging I'm not sure I will go back. I don't know how they stay in business. read more

I live in Frederick and decided to check out this nursery. When I walked in the door there were 4 employees at the register all on their phones and not one of them said hello. I was in the building over an hour and 3 employees walked by but not one asked me if I wanted any help. They have a lovely selection of items but honestly their prices are very high. If you are going to charge luxury prices, then you have to offer outstanding service. I know I could have asked for help, but should I have to beg to buy things from a store? I bought a fertilizer because I felt like I should buy something after an hour browsing and I found the same fertilizer at Home Depot for 5 bucks cheaper the next day. I won't be back. read more

I have shopped at Johnson's Garden Center for at least 15 years. Whether it is bulk mulch delivered to my house, or bags of hardwood mulch and Garden's Gold clay buster, outdoor ceramic planters with saucers; annuals and perennial flowering plants, bails of straw and a large assortment of pumpkins and gourds--Johnson's Garden Center has never failed to let me down. Their gift shop as well as their assortment of cut flowers have helped me out in times of need as well. The staff are friendly and you are welcome to browse the center as you please. I've been a customer of Johnson's for way too long than I'd like to admit. The DC location was my all time favorite but since they closed the Olney location is by far the best location (and the one I grew up with!) To me it will always be the OG JFG. Pumpkins: They never let me down. To my fellow yelpers who strive to have the best pumpkins on the street for Halloween: this is your place. Granted it may seem a bit out of the way but they have every shape, size, and color of pumpkin you can imagine. At a much more reasonable price than everywhere else. Other places on the side of the road tend to have rotted pumpkins but if anything they take care of their pumpkins here. Mulch/Soil: Decent options at the typical price. Just note their hours change by season so if you're planting during a time that's their off time you may end up here looking for soil on a Sunday when they're closed. Fresh Flowers: My favorite bit. The DC location used to have an amazing, and reasonably priced, selection of fresh cut flowers. It was huge! Now that the DC location has closed I've have to go to the remaining locations for my fresh cut flower fix. The Olney location is the now the better location except the variety is limited and WAY OVERPRICED. A single rose is $4.99. I make my own floral arrangements so $15 for THREE roses is honestly absurd. They need to fix this. 10 tulips are $11 when they're in season which is ok. But seriously! $5 a rose?! Get your roses at Safeway and stick the hydrangeas and other more reasonably priced fresh cut flowers at this Johnson's. Pre-Ordered Flower Arrangements: I've always been incredibly happy when I've ordered arrangements through this location. They may seem $10-15 overpriced but it's definitely worth it as they're freshly prepared on time and last for well over a week. Register: This is where they seriously need work. I've waited in line with fresh flowers for well over 15 minutes on my way to a viewing on several occasions. I don't know if they're short staffed or if something just always happens to go wrong with the person in front of me every time I'm there but gahh! It turns into the gift wrapping scene from Love Actually and takes forever! It's gotten to the point where I cut my shopping experience short when a line starts to form. Solution: Maybe take $2 off per rose for every two minutes I'm stuck waiting in line. Also update your website more frequently. Then you'll be set! read more

For the last few years we have gotten our annuals and herbs from our nearby big home-improvement store. Recently we got a gift card for Johnson's and we've always enjoys browsing through their gift areas and their annuals and perennials. We bought 3 vases with our gift cards, two a bit of a splurge and one quite reasonable. We also got a watering can and two beautiful plants. The selection of hose sprayers was pretty sad so we decided to wait until we went back to the home-improvement store where we were going to get some tropical ferns for around the pond. A nice drive away from congestion and lots of plants, flowers, ponds, boutique items. A pleasant afternoon. read more

This place has a great selection of just about everything for the yard. It even has a pretty cool display of tropical plants for your sunroom. They also do a nice job with the seasonal displays and items for sale. The staff is very helpful and most are quite knowledgeable. But i give it three stars mainly due to price...they are very expensive. If you catch them in a sale it's okay but their regular prices are simply too high. read more

This store has everything from fresh cut flowers(choose your own for an original bouquet; wrapped nicely at the counter), professional arrangements, and house plants to annuals, perennials, shrubs & trees to garden tools, pesticides (yes, organic), & lawn care to outdoor rugs, garden ornaments, & pottery to mulch, stone, & soil to jewelry, balloons, candles, soaps, lotions, and ladies' clothes (a complete gift shop!). If there's a zero star I would pick it for this place. They won't honor their warranty policy. Their plants roots are really dry and have not been properly cared for. They have a nice mixture of just about everything you may be looking for. I came in to check out the indoor plants, and possibly some outdoor garden and fruit stuff. The selection wasn't huge, but I imagine it beats most of the big box places. In the end, I didn't pick up anything. If you live in the area, it's a good place to visit for supplies. Prices are fairly reasonable. The employees were pretty helpful as well. read more

I just noticed that I never left my review for this company from April 2016, so here it is, better late than never. I stopped by the Olney location today to pick up 6 bags of Scotts Grub EX and once again Johnson's let me down regarding pricing and overall attitude from the manager. How does a company think they can gouge the local patrons over 30% more on items compared to the other retails in the area that sell the same products? Just this past month I bought the same product from K-Mart for $17.99 and Home Depot for $19.99 per bag, yet Johnson's was charging $29.99 for the same size bag of Scotts Grub EX. I understand charging a slight premium based on the fact that they are a small business trying to make it in Big Box Store atmosphere, but seriously, 30% premium is just plain taking advantage of people. I brought the issue up with the store manager and he shrugged his shoulders and tipped his head as if to say, "O Well". Really. I experienced the same thing several other times I visited this store in the past when I decided to give this local company my business. Not only didn't I make a purchase today, but I doubt I'll ever step foot in this overpriced store again. read more

Came here today for a centerpiece for Thanksgiving. I was directed to the four or so on display, each with a price tag of $85. I asked if there were others and was told I could speak with the florist. I found her in the back and explained what I needed. As soon as I told her the low end of my budget ($30) she immediately started shaking her head, cut me off and said "every centerpiece we offer starts at $65 and goes up from there!" She showed no willingness to try to work with my budget and wasn't interested in going any further with the conversation. She was so rude and so uninterested in wanting to find something that would help me out (I would have gone for a centerpiece of greens, which she would have known had she taken the time to ask). Really terrible customer service. I went to Safeway and got a beautiful, medium-sized Thanksgiving centerpiece for $35. I wanted to spend my money at a local small business which is why I came here first, but I guess they don't need the money. Really disappointed. read more

My parents shopped at Johnson's before I was born. As an adult I continued to shop at the store on Rockville Pike. This weekend I placed an order for delivery. I called Kensington on Monday morning to see when the delivery would occur, and was told Wednesday. Mid-day Wednesday, I called Kensington and was told the order would be delivered from the Olney Nursery. The Olney Nursery took 10 minutes to find the order - it was not scheduled for delivery, and worst of all, 1/2 of the items were out of stock at that location. When I inquired why they showed in stock, the woman told me they were months behind on keeping the website up-to-date. I called the Manager in Kensington, conveyed the situation and asked him to help me get a full refund. He called the Olney Manager, and then called me back. He told me she would call me today and assured me I would be refunded, since after 75 total family year shopping there, I would not be back. THE OLNEY MANAGER DID NOT CALL ME. THE CHARGE IS STILL ON MY CARD. read more

It is over priced but you will never find a place that has so much variety and their plants are very healthy and well maintained. Even some of the obscure plants you will be able to find here. I loved the Darnestown Rd store when it was off of rt. 28 many years ago. I Loved their holiday spread. I have since tried to find the same experience through the years at the Olney store and every time I go there, I leave swearing I will never go back. Their prices are VERY high. I did manage to purchase lots before the holidays and earned the holiday bucks. I went there to use my "holiday bucks" that I received for purchasing items before the holidays.(You know, 1 buck for every $10 you spend - which amounts to a 10% savings or so you think.) Well . . . The bucks can only be used after the holidays during about a 3 week window simply to get you in and deplete items they don't care to stock anymore - they've put away all the fun/worthy holiday stock and they're REALLY just trying to get rid of last season's items so there isn't much of a selection left for you to use your bucks on. You can't use the bucks on sale items AND . . . The $1 bucks are REALLY only worth 50 cents because you can only use them on half of the price of the item you are purchasing. So REALLY, . . . you are actually only saving 5% on the "leftover" stock they're trying to get rid of. When you consider the initial mark-up, you really aren't saving anything!! Additionally, they've never made me any great deals when I've asked for better pricing and while their displays are fun looking, the quality of their items in the shop is not great. Lots from China . . . ugh!!! Finally, Ladies night during the holidays was a bust. I purchased nothing - prices too high. Glad I didn't bring too many chums along. I expected sooooo much more. Others I spoke with felt the same. The raffles were ok and a draw but the few unique items were too expensive and much of the stock is cheaply made!! Plants and trees may be a whole different story but the seasonal shop inside leaves me hanging out down the road for some better deals and a quality product.
