This is a comparably nice hotel given the small town it is located in. The lobby looks updated and I like the breakfast area. They serve a good selection for breakfast: yogurt, milk, oatmeal, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, Jimmy dean sandwiches, bacon, bagels, muffins, bananas, oranges, apple slices, coffee, tea, and juices. The rooms are spacious enough, though, I do not think it is cleaned to the tee. I do like that the TVs can be controlled from your phone after scanning a QR code. Alarm clock is there but not even plugged in. The sheets are a little rough. The only toiletry offered is one soap bar. The shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel are attached to the shower wall. Walls aren't the thickest; I could hear my neighbor snoring. But overall, the hotel isn't noisy from the outside. The check-in process was quick as well. As someone that frequently stays on Marriott properties, I am pretty disappointed with my experience here so far. To start, this is a hotel in an incredibly small town so by no means did I expect the Ritz but I expected more for $150/night. First off the hotel itself is old and musty with a fresh renovation right on top of it. So at first it looks nice then you start to look closer. Our room wasn't great, there was a stain right in the middle of the floor and chair. Looks like someone got stabbed honestly. A couple nasty stains on the bed too, I'd be worried but there is a strong smell of cleaning chemicals so I choose to believe the room is clean. Our bed was firm but after a night with a couple "juice boxes" it felt fine and I slept like a baby. The bathroom was the least renovated of the hotel and our shower is continuously dripping water. It's dripping FAST too, but I'm not paying the water bill so if management doesn't address it, I'm not worried about it. Now to the worst part of my stay... the breakfast. I assume Marriott requires all properties to offer the same breakfast because I've had the same offerings of scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits/gravy, etc at other properties but I can easily say this is the worst breakfast I've ever had in my life. That's not an exaggeration or hyperbole, literally the worst; I imagine this is what it was like to be on Kitchen Nightmares. The eggs looked and tasted like yellow sand, I don't even know how you manage that consistency with an egg. You could tell the biscuits were pre-baked, frozen, then put out. They were ice cold. Finally the bacon looked like it was cooked in about a month's worth of grease and was absolutely dripping when you pulled it from the tray. Even the orange juice tasted bad! Needless to say we immediately asked the front desk where we should get breakfast and they gave us numerous recommendations. I would be utterly embarrassed to serve that food to guests, I would never want to be viewed by others the way I view the staff. Overall, I hope I never have to stay here again, if you're in town it's the only hotel so get ready. I'm sure am ready to go home. UPDATE: I dropped a star based on further things we experienced. -We requested that our room be turned over (gave 24hr notice) and it wasn't. -There is one working ice machine on the property and it's in the lobby -The shower went from an occasional drip to now a non-stop stream -There is nowhere you can get water besides the one functioning water fountain in the lobby. -We asked for an additional pillow because one of ours was nasty and they said they didn't have any. Yuck. We stayed in Room 137. The smell of damp and mold was absolutely disgusting. The room was dark, damp and moldy . Every summer we come to Coloma for a family reunion. Everyone in the family talks about "Surfari Joes". They have a small watermark attached to this hotel but it's not in service. Even when it was in service you could just tell it was a preti dish. This hotel has bed bugs and would not refund our money after we found them and showed them to the front desk. They refunded the customer that left for the same reason prior to us and told us to call in the morning to get a refund. That was July 5th and today they informed us they were not going to issue a refund as the manager didn't think we deserved one. read more

This hotel should be shut down. When we came the first room we were offered smelled bad of cleaning products. The second room did not smell but the bathroom was not clean. The tub was chipped and the shower head had calcium deposits. There was black dirt in the corner of the tub and floor. We complained to the desk and all they offered was to let us out of our three day reservation and only pay for one night. We were in town for my parents funeral and did not want to find a new hotel. We were stuck. The free breakfast in the morning was the worst.no coffee. No eggs no sausage. No juice. Bad bad bad. Apparently a tree trimming company was in town and they ate up all the food and the hotel was not able to replenish the breakfast. Our complaints fell on deaf ears. The hotel said to us that they were struggling to keep it going since covid. With one maid. That is why we had no maid service to our room. No trash no towels no soap no nothing. If I was able to provide a zero star I would! I was very upset about this hotel. I can not even say anything about our stay because we were unable to stay because of a gas leak. We were not notified that our stay was cancelled until arriving after driving 140 miles with two kids under 4. Better yet prior to leaving we received an email confirming our stay. We were not offered anything for the major inconvenience, and had to find ourselves somewhere to stay last minute further away from where we wanted to stay. Also during my conceits the front desk they notified me that the water park has been closed for 2 years even though it does not say that at all!!! I have stayed in literally dozens of Marriott properties, many Fairfields, and this is by far the worst of the lot. There are the things you expect going in: it's right by the freeway, so it's a little loud, and it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. But that's fine, we knew that when we booked, and we were just staying a night because we were attending a wedding nearby. There's an attached "waterpark" that's very small and very dreary. In contrast to the beautiful sunny day, the waterpark was dark and sad. The room we had was subpar. Even though it had been cleaned (beds made, towels folded), there was hair all over the bathroom: two little hairs in the sink, a hair on a towel. The bathroom smelled like vomit. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable. We checked out the breakfast in the morning, and it was fine. They had three cereals to choose from, an assortment of things to toast, scrambled eggs and hard boiled eggs, sausage, fruit, oatmeal, and a waffle maker. The waffles were shockingly bland, and the hot water for tea ran out before the breakfast time was up. There were a bunch of chairs in the breakfast area that were torn. Really not sure why this hotel has such a low rating. I would rate this four stars but seeing some of the low ratings and comments (like highway facing rooms)I feel they were unfair so I'm going to give this a bit of a boost. Maybe if you live out in the country and are not used to noise I can see it being an issue but it never has bothered us at all. The downtown area his a decent microbrewery as well and this isn't far from St. Joseph so it's a perfect stop. We have stayed here on our way to an annual trip to Troy, MI and have three children. The attached waterpark is fantastic even if slides are not open during the week. Pool water is always warm and the splash pad area is fun for young kids. Hotel staff has always been kind and accommodating. Carpet could use some spot cleaning but otherwise the hotel is well kept and clean. We are accustomed to staying in Embassy Suites, Westin and vacation club suites. Now this of course isn't along that level which I would consider in the more five star range but if you have kids it is a must stay if you need somewhere to stop while traveling. read more

Coming from Chicago over MLk weekend w our toddler because the indoor water parks around us raise their rates considerably during 3 day weekends. The reviews had us nervous but were unfounded; this is a nice midprice hotel for families looking for a small waterpark vacay. --Hotel guests get access to all areas except the large slides. I think the waterpark is weekends only? --towels are provided at waterpark but we brought hotel towels too bc they were busy and ran out. -- for our toddler the kiddie play area was enough, but as others have noted, that area's water is pretty chilly. We alternated her in the free swim pool which was quite warm, same as the lazy river. --- this is a kids hotel. Kids were running thru our hallway at midnight but thats what earplugs are for. --- waterpark opens at 8 am on sundays and i think was open till 9 sat night, serving food and even offering a bar! There's another bar in hotel lobby too, and church services there on sunday. -- the elevator and breakfast areas are sorta overrun constantly. I found the stairs handy and we had some breakfast foods we brought to supplement the paucity of fresh fruit ( they had apples). But these are realities and not complaints. --- our room had complimentary online youtube, hbo go streaming, and showtime streaming plus a broad cable package. Hbo streaming has lots of kids shows these days. The rioom was clean and seemed well designed for families, with a minifridge and pull out table. We'd recommend this place! read more

I'm not one to leave reviews usually, but I would want to know this about a hotel before I booked it. When we checked in and got to the room, I checked the bed for bed bugs (I always do this, and I've never found anything luckily). However, I was very tired and just checked up around the headboard. I woke up the next morning to a bed bug, filled with blood, crawling around the sheets. I immediately killed and found two more. I went straight down to the front desk (the customer service was great), and I got moved to another room. I wanted to make sure I was being thorough in checking for bugs at this point, so I flipped the mattress. When I did this, what I found was outright disgusting. It looked like someone just died on the mattress. The entire thing had a HUGE black, brown, and yellow stain. It was at this point that I told the front desk I would just like to end my stay and check out. I was refunded all money, which I really appreciate. The employees that I dealt with were great - just please be cautious if you choose to stay here. Giving two stars instead of one because of the great service. read more

Room: Our shower water ran the whole time. You couldn't shut it off. So you hear running water the whole time. It's clearly an ongoing issue by the stains in the tub. "Breakfast" is served only until 9, even on the weekends, and it's not like they have to work at it. It's a brown bag with apple, muffin and breakfast bar. It was $330 for two nights. Way overpriced for a double queen. The room he adjoining doors and port thin walls. We could hear people talking, phone calls, and the TV at all hours. It was awful! Never again. read more

The hotel was nice, especially the downstairs area with bar, restaurant and cafe. The room, however, was not cool. We were on the third floor, facing the highway. Big mistake. The interstate is a major corridor for shipping, so 18 wheelers we're hammering through all night. So, we decided to turn on the A/C to drown out the noise. It was not central and the window unit came on and off of turbo mode. Fortunately we were able to sleep through it. How are there not soundproof windows here? It's like the window was open! What saved this all... As we were headed out the next day, we saw a stream of water going across a doorway. Upon further inspection, we found a freaking water park... WHAT!? We had it all to ourselves. It was crazy, how did we not know this when choosing this hotel. The water park saved this hotel's butt. Best bed ever! Slept 11 hours straight! Stayed on a Tuesday night after a trans-Atlantic flight into Chicago. Thought we could make it home to Ypsi, but only made it as far as Watervliet. We had no reservation but the front desk clerk was friendly and helpful and within minutes we were checked in at a great rate and on our way to sweet dreams! Different set of front desk folks the next morning but just as friendly and nice. The room was generally clean, there were some nasty yellow stains on the curtains and there was water stains in the bathroom, indicating a leak and there's possibly mold (my boyfriend's nose has been acting crazy and he got a migraine). This hotel was disappointing for the price point. When I stay at a Marriott, I expect to be comfortable in my hotel. When arriving, nobody was at the front desk. I waited 10 minutes for someone to show up. I asked for my room to be changed to 2 queen beds as soon as I got here and they refused. They weren't even close to full. Fast forward, my keys were given to me without checking an ID or taking a card for incidentals. Not safe, but at a minimum I knew what name the reservation was under. Went to grab a drink at the lounge they advertise, well, there is no lounge. Disappointing. When asked about extra towels, we waited 2 hours and didn't receive them. I went down to front desk and the lady said she was going to bring them. I said we need them now. She quickly retrieved them. Last night I came in and said my room key wasn't working anymore...no big deal, but the guy at the front desk made me 2 keys without checking name or ID. Hope someone doesn't try telling them the wrong room or you could at risk. If I were coming to the area again, I'd stay somewhere different even if it's in St. Joe or South Haven. read more

Was locked out of my room for several hours after trying multiple room keys and apparently hotel staff couldn't access the room without a key which makes no sense. What if there was an emergency? One person on shift throughout the hotel and couldn't reach maintenance nor the manager to get a response about the room. Temporarily checked us into a new room after a hour of waiting and there was trash on the floor and the tv didn't even work, along as hairs on my bed and a beyond dirty phone. Don't go there is over a year of reports from getting chemical burns from pool and bacteria infections from the water. Many people a year later are still suffering from the bacteria infections. So here's what happened. My partner has Marriot points that he has to use before they expire. We think to ourselves "let's try to go somewhere family friendly (we have an 8-month old) and within 2 hours of Chicago for baby's first road trip...it'll be fun!". So we choose a place that's a little further than the lake side towns we've already been to and bookmark some places to try around the hotel. A couple of things. One, as it turns out, there's NOTHING to do IN Watervliet (besides perhaps the indoor water park at the hotel) so you have to drive to towns around it to do anything fun and two, this hotel is NOT enjoyable to stay at unless you are actually enjoying said water park (which we weren't). Here's why... 1) The place is recently remodeled and looks nice enough, but it's still an old building with old stuff made to look pretty. The walls are sooooo thin you can hear everything outside of your room (seriously, EVERYTHING), the air conditioner/heating unit is loud as hell and kicks on all day/night long making you crazy if you're a light sleeper, and the bathroom was like half redone so the sink and surround look nice(ish) but the tub was questionable. It really could use a good refinishing and a scrub with CLR before I'd want to take a bath in it for sure. 2) I guess I should've realized that a place with a water park would be crawling with children but I also thought that a random weekend in January wouldn't be that busy and also that people would tame their feral spawn. Man, was I wrong. I will say this: the staff was pleasant enough and the room was decent. It had a tiny little microwave and mini fridge and a nice little desk area which was helpful to hold the mass amounts of crap you have to bring for your kid(s). They also have free wi fi which is a nice touch. I didn't see the water park or much of the hotel besides the lobby and our room so I can't say anything about the rest of the place. Overall though, I wouldn't stay here again. Even if it's free. Maybe I'm a hotel snob, maybe I just hate other people's kids, or maybe I need a more happening hotel/surrounding town. I don't know. I am a Marriott member so I stay Marriott when I can. This location did not impress me. First off, it wasn't that busy and the staff placed me in a room facing the highway-very noisy. Secondly, I was in a room that had an adjoining door to another room-why? Again, it wasn't busy or full, why put us next to each other. I could hear the man next to me during his phone conversations and I could hear the person talking on the phone-thin walls. Lastly, I found the room inadequately supplied. I only had one trash can in my bathroom. I bring food when I travel so I usually need a decent size trash (with a liner) to throw food trash in. read more

My fiance and I stayed the night here for a wedding and we were extremely pleased with our experience overall! The staff was very friendly and our room was extremely clean. The pool was a lot of fun for a small "water park" and was also clean. We didn't stay for breakfast, but it appeared to be pretty good for a hotel breakfast. My only complaint was being in a room facing the very busy expressway. You could hear the sounds of trucks all night and we couldn't find a way to keep the AC running to drown out the noise. Made it difficult to sleep. Other than that, really a decent hotel overall! read more

FREEZING. For the love of God, why they keep both the water & air cold, I have no idea. It did not make for a pleasant experience. Keep in mind this was in December, so being cold indoors was not particularly enjoyable. It was hard not to be distracted by how cold it was inside. Even my 9 year old nephew was so bothered by it, he just wanted to sit on a bench under a towel. Some of us sucked it up & eventually got somewhat adjusted. There's two water slides. They're both fun, but quickly get old. There's a lazy river, but it's pretty short. There is pool, about the size you'd find in a hotel. However, no jumping in or splashing. read more

First this is only for the water area Surfari Joes! It's small, but for ages 12, 9, 7 and 5 it's just fine. We didn't have to drive 3 hrs so we didn't spend the night. It was clean, warm, and safe. The 3 -4 guards on duty were pleasant, as well as the MANager. The back area noted from a prior review is clearly visible and little non-swimmers wouldn't be in that area. It's a river rapid with moving water. There are PLENTY of adults around for the kiddie area. I didn't see any trash anywhere. Plenty of guards at first and second session. We stopped at the front desk, in order to know where to go and they were pleasant. My only complaint is the signs for alcohol, which they no longer serve (beer). We were allowed, however, to bring it in ... No Glass. My 9 yr old wanted to come for his bday and for 60.00 from 11:45 to 6pm....this was a great deal/day with lots of pool fun. Went to the grocery and got chicken and fries, brought it back and fed 4 kids in the conference type room, used to be the arcade but its empty now except for microwave, toaster, tables and tv, part of the hotel. Hubby grabbed beer for us there too. Don't know where the animals are, that are posted as pics below, I didnt see any. I think that maybe when the ownership changed, these left. My hubby and I could watch from above. We could study and enjoy outselves too. As for the lady whose son hit his tooth on the wall....my son got both of his front teeth broken at home in the driveway. Accidents happen everywhere. Great service, complimentary breakfast and free wifi but paper-thin walls (and a lot of kids). My wife and I were driving down I-94 from Chicago to Toronto in early January. Although I thought I accounted for all the storm systems in the area, an intense wind and heavy snow came out of nowhere reducing visibility to near-zero. Once we started seeing trucks flipped over off of the highway we decided it was time for a pit stop. So we ended up in a small town whose name I don't know if I can articulate: Watervliet. Fortunately Watervliet had a Marriott Fairfield Inn, but unfortunately we had our dog with us, and while he is a certified service animal we didn't have his paperwork printed out and could not access it on our Internet-less devices. The gentleman at the front desk was very understanding and accommodating, he let us use his Internet and printer and set us up in a room. We enjoyed the complimentary wifi and breakfast in the morning and we used the small store within the hotel to buy a bit of food before we turned in. That night and the following morning we discovered that (a) the hotel was full of noisy children on account of the fact that the town's main attraction is an adjoined indoor water park and (b) the walls are very thin and everything, even the details of conversations in an adjacent room, are completely audible. While that was unfortunate, the great service and friendly disposition of the staff makes up for it. Maybe if our stay was longer we may have been more uncomfortable, but it was certainly more than sufficient for our needs. Once our stay was coming to an end the room-key enabled back door leading to the parking lot allowed us to load our vehicle quickly and be on our way. I did think $100 a night seemed a little pricey for a small town of 1,500, but it's probably a cost associated with the demand to visit the water park. read more

This was our second time staying here and it was a lot worse than last time. The water in the water park was a lot colder, and the entire hotel and waterpark were very dirty. well at first when I got here I was kind of disappointed in the lack of information I got when I was on the phone with the hotel. but when I got here I was very impressed with Austin and Anita how they handled it I tried to go to an ATM to deposit money into my account cuz my card was declined. My closest bank was 40 miles away so I came back to the hotel and told them that I uploaded the money on a prepaid card which it would take some time. Anita the manager insisted that I get my room keys and she would process the payment later which I very much appreciated considering a 6 year old birthday party was on the line. frustration and anxiety sometimes gets the best of me and at this point they really alleviated some of the tension that I had. Attempted to bring our daughter and 7 of her friends to the water park "Safari Joe's" for a birthday party. Water park had to be evacuated due to excessively high chlorine gas levels. Kids and adults were running to get outside. People were coughing and gasping for fresh air. Several of the girls were vomiting. No kidding this was a chlorine gas level that would be used for chemical warfare. Needless to say, worst birthday ever! They did refund our money. Advise to call ahead to make sure water park is safe for humans before making the trip to Safari Joe's. read more
