holy SHIT! this is a must go. I saw the sign "try a free sample of falafel" and i was like okay might as well and it was actually some of the best i've had (and is gluten free!) The falafel is so crispy and crunchy on the outside and smooth in the inside. i could eat those all day long. they're perfect. i had the vegetarian plate (i am gluten free so i had to pass on the pita :( ). I got 7 AMAZING falafel balls, salad with tomato and cucumber and some fun dressings and spices, hummus (so fricken good), and an olive cucumber salad. I wish i tried the dolmas as they looked fantastic but oh well, I'll be coming back. I also was given a side of rice and sauce instead of pita which was very nice and it was so good. Mmm. So pricey! I ordered a falafel plate, and not only was it over $10, but the portions were tiny! The falafel balls: tiny; the salad portion: ridiculously tiny; and the portions of hummus and baba ganoush: so sadly shallow, I could've cried deeper puddles. Oh, and one measly piece of pita. The price reflects a larger portion from what you'd get from the wrap/sandwich, but I think it's the same amount of food. It's been 20+ years that my family and I have been coming here, and this is the first time I've felt ripped off. The food is good, but not $10.50 (before tax) good. I'll have to save my falafel eating for when I'm home in New York, where I can get big portions of middle Eastern food for reasonable prices. Because I like this place, and I like the owner, I really hope they change their portions to feed grown people... and not just the grown people who have bottomless wallets. Why had I never tried this place out?!? I was at the pearl street mall yesterday and I'm so glad I dropped in to get a bite to go. It was delicious!!! Simple menu with all my Mediterranean favorites. I got the Casablanca plate with lamb. This included a small and refreshing Greek salad, tasty rice, humus, 4 falafel, a dolma, pita bread, and the fresh, cut and cooked to perfection, strips of lamb. It was all excellent! The staff were warm and friendly and the lamb was prepared in front of me, after I ordered it. I'll definitely be back! Ugh, yum. So good, so fresh. Stopped here after a hike and it was a perfect decision. You can literally watch the balls of dough plop into the deep fryer and come out as beautiful falafel balls in front of your eyes. I ordered the hummus pita wrap which ran for $8.99 and it was so crispy and delicious! The hummus was awesome (don't skimp, it's worth the extra $$) and it was a perfect size for lunch. I took it to go and it was wrapped excellently - probably the easiest experience I've ever had eating a wrap without it falling apart all over me. There are places to sit inside, but the lighting gets a little dark as you go towards the back. There are a few tables outside as well if you like to eat there. Okay. My relationship with falafel king is becoming a bit serious. I daydream about the fresh fried falafel balls served out front on busy Pearl St., and I seem to wander in there at least once a week without even knowing how I got there. The gyro plate is where it's at. A Greek salad topped with gyro meat and served with two sides. I go for hummus and dolmas, but, there are lots of options when it comes to sides. It is also served with a pita in case you feel like mushing it altogether in a piece of bread and then devouring it! Yum! There are lots of other options. Chicken pita, shawarma, vegetarian options, etc. there is something for everyone. I would also add that this location is extra special because the owner is so sweet. For decades Falafel King was one of my favorites and I even used them for catered meals, but it's taken a nose dive recently. The portion sizes have gotten so small that after going there, I had to get some food elsewhere to be satisfied. Even the falafel balls have gotten smaller. Did the food taste good, yes! Except the pita bread, got the whole wheat and it was soft/mushy, so I didn't eat it. Got the Mediterranean special plater (falafel, gyro meat, salad on plate). The spice was great, salad delicious. The pistachio baklava was great, but it was $3 for literally two bites. I could have taken it in one bite, but I wanted to enjoy it.... While the flavor is really good, I think the portion was a little too small on the gyro meat and the baklava (this is in contrast to both how other restaurants serve in the same genre of food as well as the dozens of options just around the area). As others have said, extremely skimpy portions. The food itself is good but I've been there a few times now, and each time I've been surprised at how tiny the amount of meat, rice, and even salad (come on!!) you get. $20 to walk away hungry. Not a bad option in a pinch but below par compared to many other places. If the portions are going to be that small, they should not charge so much. Service was fine tho, nice people up front. Fast Falafel I like the fact that this place is fairly fast and has that hip & casual feel. Speedy Mediterranean food is awesome because it shows that the area embraces culture. As I walked in I noticed that the pricing was fair and definitely not on the bargain side. I decided to snag the "special" which is a gyro, 6 falafel balls, and a soda. In addition I ordered a side of tabouleh, baba ganoush, and extra whole wheat pita. The service isn't anything welcoming or spectacular. I wasn't greeted nor was the college girl ringing me up being anything but busy and she was maybe even a tad irritated for whatever reason. I was strictly there for the food but a warm and cheery staff is always something that I love to experience. It sure makes the food THAT much more appealing and mysteriously tastier then usual (memo to them). The food itself wasn't too bad. The gyro meat was juicy and went well with the sandwich. I did ask for hot sauce on it but I guess my flame factor isn't up to par with most Westernized folk. The falafel balls were small, fresh, but not as "spiced" as I like them to be. A total preference thing and let's face it, I guess I don't prefer their particular recipe.The tabouleh has more bulgur and less parsley then average- flip flopped, if you will. It also didn't have much of a lemony or minty taste to it. The baba lacked the charred eggplant taste to it. It may have been due to the other ingredients they add to the dip. I devoured the whole thing with my kids but I'll be d@mned if I didn't after dropping nearly 25 bucks on all that stuff. The falafel is made daily and very fresh which made the experience a lot nicer! And yes, I have been a fan since we were both young. In fact, since the Pearl Street Mall was young too. I am not sure how I have never reviewed this classic but I eat there intermittently and I have not been in a while since there are so many new places to eat downtown. And I often buy their items prepackaged at Whole Foods. But there is nothing as good as fresh from the fryer hot falafel on a pita with fresh cold salad fixings. What a great lunch on a hot day. The line goes out the door on nice days on the Mall but they keep it moving quickly and they usually give out some samples to keep you pacified. The falafel ball batter gets squirted or scooped (it was hard to see over the counter) out of the dispenser bowl and right into the fryer and then scooped out onto a tray to fill the orders. They were assembling the plates and pita wraps as quickly as the hot parts were ready. Everyone is friendly, they keep the case with trays of prepped foods quite clean and the prices are a nice value casual meal. The only flaw I found was that since they had prepped so much lettuce for a busy Saturday, a few pieces had lightly browning ends by the time I got there. You can eat inside or at the Mall entrance seats ( an "almost" patio) or take it to go to eat on the Court House lawn, which is where I found lots of families with small kids and very few local "lingerers." All in all, a nice treat and so much better than any of the newer falafel sellers that I have tried recently in other parts of town. To me, this is still the local gold standard and fresh really is best. I need to get back in the habit of stopping in. read more

Ive been to Boulder numerous times and never ventured in here. Well after a failed attempt at a Rib Restaurant because they were closed. I ventured in here. Damn im glad. The 2 girls behind the counter were rockstars. I had the Gyro with Onions but no Hot Sauce though you can get hot sauce if thats your pleasure. It had tasty vegetables on it and was packed with meat and the tzatiki sauce wasnt overly salted. And the meat was moist. Other establishments ive been to it has been dry. I liked the option of Pomegranate Lemonade though i had rootbeer. I even had a off the wall question about where to find tape to mail out a package and they offered to lend me some then help me find a convenience store. Ah, I want to love this place so much. It has huge potential, but they just cut corners on too many things. Since a trip to Israel a few years ago I have been a constant hummus, pita, and more eater. I ordered a shawarma and hummus plate, and a couple others in my party did as well. It came out after around 10 minutes and we began eating. The hummus was the highlight by far. It had a nice, smooth texture to it and tasted authentic. Unfortunately the pita was off. It was taken from a bag and reheated, which was really too bad. It has potential, but it was just too tough and off in it's current state. Pita is such a simple thing to fix and would go a long ways towards making this place so much better. The main part of the dish, the shawarma, was pretty dry. The dressings, especially the little side of hot sauce we were given, and the rest of the lettuce and things were great. The meat just didn't cut it though. It looked like they prepared it just like they do in Israel, but for what ever reason it was completely dried out. I had a lemonade with it that was pretty good as well. A few fixes and this place could really be something special. read more

A fine place for lunch. The line is usually long but they move orders through their assembly line pretty fast. It's a pretty good deal- my 6 x 4 (6 falafel, 4 sides) plate lasted me two light meals and cost $9.99. Most options ranged from $7-10. The falafel balls are small and airy but light on herbs and flavor, rather indicative of my whole meal. I enjoyed the Greek delight (feta, olives, dill, tomato and cucumber I believe) and the dolmas the most of the sides. The hummus was creamy but not particularly special and the baba ganoush was meh. The pita was small and pretty doughy- I wish it was toasted. Overall, I found myself looking for more flavor- garlic, herbs, lemon- like I associate with Mediterranean food. Some acidity and maybe a little more salt would have brought out all the fresh elements on the plate! I wished they hadn't forgotten the hot sauce they offered up on the side, that surely would have helped lend some flavor. I would go back if I was really craving this sort of food but I definitely would not go out of my way. There's way too many better places to eat on Pearl Street.
