Excellent! I was hesitant about getting my food here, since this place is not fancy by any means. The owner was kind and happy to help me since this was my first visit. He said what the locals like to eat, and what combos are most popular while explaining some of the ingredients. While I was waiting for my food, a regular customer walked in and said he eats there every day, and his brother is coming from London and he will have him eat here as well. I walked home only 2 blocks, with my tray in hand and all happy and proud to try something new. I sat down at my table and took a fork full of amazing flavors. This place is a hole in the wall! I think most of the orders ate take out cause there's very limited seating, maybe 4 people at most. Dropped in for a quick bite to go, and ordered a falafel wrap, fish wrap, lamb/chicken combo, lentil soup and fava beans. I gotta say my falafel wrap was pretty good! Good enough to go back for another, and my friend really enjoyed her fish wrap. The next day i had the lentil soup and again i was impressed, it's rich deep flavors are on point! The meat combo was gobbled down by my kid with no complaints, still haven't gotten to the fava beans but I'm really impressed with this place. All the food and 3 drinks came out to a happy $35. The best thing about this place as opposed to a truck?? This feels more authentic and they get more time to dedicate to the creation of each dish or sandwich. I think if you want falafel halal food and anywhere near this area then drop by and try one of their many delicious dishes. The shwarma was well-seasoned and had yummy, charred, crispy edges. It came with seasoned rice and salad with freshly chopped veggies. The only hiccup was the side-by-side comparison of our meal to the display menu picture. Nearly half the meat was missing. When will restaurants learn they should never have pictures of their food! My review is based on Postmates delivery: It was super fast and convenient. I ordered falafel with extra white sauce and Shish kebab platter with salad and rice. The falafels were crunchy, hot and amazing. One of the best falafels I've heard had. The kebab platter was also good but I don't think that's the traditional beef shish kebab. It tasted more like pieces of well done skirt steak. But like I said I liked the food so it was fine. I think it has more of a Indian taste profile than middle eastern which I thought this restaurant was. I'm good with either one so I will order again. read more

I got the Chicken Shawarma wrap and Grape Leaves as the appetizer. The leaves were good and the ingredients of the wrap were fine. This place is really, really good. It's clean, fast, and cheap. It's not what we would expect from other places but the sandwiches we got were delicious and the sides were as well. We got a gyro that didn't look like what a gyro typically looks like and they cook all their meat in a red sauce that's kind of spicy but isn't so hot it takes away from the food. The spicy red sauce with the white sauce is a perfect combination and because the meat isn't dry, it all works well together. The reason it gets 4 stars instead of five is the baklava is a little bland and we wish we knew the sandwiches were spicy because we got some for the kids and they couldn't eat it. I've always gotten one of the platters (recommend the mixed which comes with chicken and lamb). I always get the works. Meat is flavorful as is the rice. Comes with falalal as well which is well made, crispy and has a minty refreshing center. Platter comes with salad and I mean a legit salad with many of the same ingredient to pick from a fancy gourmet salad bar. All the ingredients look very fresh and taste just as fresh. White sauce/hot sauce please! And no this hot sauce will not burn your taste buds like THE chicken and rice does. OMG a mom & pop type spot at the corner of Amsterdam. The decor does not match the flavorful falafels. My boyfriend said "you have to try this spot". Being connoisseurs of falafel trucks we really like this location. This place puts food trucks to shame. A dollar or so more than the average food truck prices but the options and menu has many more options. Did I mention the flavor? Sorry for the pic, we couldn't contain ourselves. We ordered two pita Combo Falafel and fries. As for ambiance you'd just be coming for the food. Although we ate in on some rustic chairs and a stable lopsided table. Geesh, I wasn't expecting to have such a poor experience. First time ordering from this restaurant, and definitely the last time as well. I read the other Yelp reviews first and thought that it would be okay, but no. 1st I ordered for 8:15 delivery, GrubHub confirmed it would be delivered 8:20-8:30, but delivery came at 8:00. I was barely home and not really ready yet. Price is VERY high. I got a shawarma with hummus, micro-sized salad and 2 pitas for over $30 with tax, delivery charge and tip. I can get more food on Wall Street for $8 and better quality hummus. The shawarma was dry, old, sticky didn't taste good. Hummus was okay, but I wanted more and the 4 sides to choose were basically a tablespoon each. Biggest problem was that I ordered baklava and it wasn't in the package. I had to call GrubHub to see if they would re-deliver, but I just got a refund on the amount, but I would also have like a refund on the tip. The 'driver' certainly saw the order and it was missing the baklava and the tip was based on the total sale, but I didn't get an item. Lesson learned; never pre-tip and make the 'driver' stand there as you open each item and confirm that it is correct. Maybe they take better care of their dine-in customers who can watch what they are doing more closely. NEVER AGAIN. read more

Stopping here for lunch because I got tired of unanswered curiosities (Amsterdam is one of the better routes between CU's Morningside and Medical Center campuses). Anyway, the reviews seemed promising and I was feining for some Halal lamb over rice (with seating) so I stopped in. TBH, it doesn't seem so inviting from the outside. There is no entry point for the counter and the guys behind it seemed a bit on the grumpy side. But that changed quickly. They guided me right through the menu and took the time to prep my meal. I got the lamb schwarma over rice, which came with salad on the side. (The preparation can be a little slower, especially because the line cook seems to also double as the delivery guy). Yes, that cute veggie bar at the counter, for the most part, is yours to pick and choose from. And, yes, don't be afraid to ask the guy what he recommends. He will have no problem telling you, and you'll like it. Next time I'm around, I'll check out the other things on the menu here. read more

This place is really a (clean) hole in the wall - absolutely nothing fancy about it. But if fresh trumps fancy on your culinary quests, point your compass towards the Middle East, by way of Hamilton Heights and wander on in. The owners of this place used to run the slightly more upscale (all is relative here) Kasbah - further north on Amsterdam and I was sad to see them go. But all is well, because this newer joint is everything a falafel joint should be - chock full of delicious and FRESH salads, wraps, platters and sandwiches that are sure to delight. The prices are almost ridiculously low - when was the last time you had a tasty spinach pie for $2? Or a lovely Baklava for $1.75? The meals you cam put together here for less than $10 (including beverage and tip, by the way) are comparable to the best street food you might find in any north african city. What was lost in the tagines and cows cows of Kasbah is more than compensated for here with amazingly fresh and moist falafel and really delicious baba ganoush and hummus. You should expect a slightly longer than normal want for the falafel - because they do not fry it in advance. Every batch is made to order - so instead of small rock like hockey pucks - you get steamy moist balls of flavorful chickpea delight. There are many sauces (hot, white, tahini, "special Tarboosh!" and others are on offer to compliment the fresh salads and falafels. All are included in the low prices. They have a A rating from the Health Department and to me that is a sign of meticulous care in a restaurant. Other evidence of this caring attitude is clear in the special offerings - like a Ramadan Cream Custard dessert in the cold case, freshly made Mint tea - iced or hot and well seasoned seafood and meat stews. So, if you like your food fresh and full of flavor - but are not looking for atmosphere or a fine dining experience - Tarboosh is really your only choice in Hamilton Heights. I go to church right around the corner from this place. If I knew it has such great veggie options, I would come a lot sooner. I usually do the standard steamed veggies over brown rice at the Chinese place. This the typical middle eastern food. I usually order falafel, but I went with the lentil platter, which comes with rice and salad. The salad is more than the standard lettuce and tomato. They have carrot, onions, chickpeas, radish, olives. The lentils were very well seasoned and super tastey. there is some seating, but it appears to be mostly a take-out. read more

Best (and only) falafel in the area. Huge and vast menu of fast-food middle-eastern dishes. I come here a lot and the folks that work here are very nice, the food is always prepared quickly and with attention to detail. The food itself has been consistently good and they've never mixed up an order of mine - considering how often I stop in, I think that's the mark of an above-average eatery.
