This is hands down our favorite tiki bar in San Diego. The drinks are great and the whole place has such a fun, lively energy. It's pretty dark inside, but it really adds to the tropical tiki vibe as soon as you walk in. The decor is super detailed and makes the experience even better. The only downside is the lack of space. It can be hard to find a spot to set your drink down, especially when it's busy. But the service is solid and the drinks are always good. We especially love coming during the holidays! False Idol might be my most favorite tiki bar of all time. I've had the opportunity to drop in quite a few times over the years and have always thoroughly enjoyed the experience and drinks. The atmosphere and ambiance is top-tier with an intriguing low-light setting and classic tiki decor strewn about. The water installation is a really cool touch and is always fun to be near. The menu is to the point and nicely put together with solid descriptions and their rum/cocktail program is one of, if not the best, I've ever seen. The bartenders are super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable which is great if you want to get nerdy chatting them up about rum, their niche ingredients, tiki mugs, history, and more (if that is your thing, it's certainly mine). There is a reason they are a world-renowned tiki bar, so take advantage and enjoy it! I strongly recommend getting reservations ahead of time since it's a pretty small space that is super popular (rightfully so), so you may struggle to walk in or even get last minute reservations. Finally made our way to False Idol during the Holiday Season and they are decked out with lights and festive drinks! We arrived at 7pm on a Saturday and were really lucky to be able to go straight-in without any reservation. We initially thought we would have to wait a for a while so that was a nice surprise. Inside is filled with Christmas lights and holiday decorations which creates a really cool and intimate setting. The space itself is not too large and so they do a good job of limiting the number of people inside at a time where you have a enough space for your group to drink and chat. I loved the system/service inside because you actually don't have to go up to the bar to order, but rather they have employees doing their rounds between those at a table and those people standing (us) so they were very prompt at getting our orders and delivering our drinks. The O.G. Banana Nog was a unique spin on the Egg Nog classic and it was really delicious! Imagine a banana flavored egg nog and boom that's this drink. The banana flavor went really well with the creaminess of the egg nog. We also got the Fairytale of York which I really loved too! This is much more in the spirit of mint flavors. After finally locating this tiki bar in another well packed bar we were lucky enough to walk in without a reservation because it was late at night, otherwise a reservation is highly recommended. Heads up: This tiki bar is inside a restaurant and the name isn't displayed on the outside. We were only two people so it was easy to get in even though we did not have a reservation. Highly recommend to make a reservation. If you don't have a reservation, you could sit at the bar if there's space OR they'll have you stand. If you don't have another option but to stand, a waiter does come by to take your order and make sure you're ok. I ordered the Christmas Island and it was such a great drink. It has gin, spiced cranberry, guava, lime, and seltzer. Because it was Christmas, they also had a really cute decoration with a Santa hat, fake snow, and an herb. This spot is so fun! We went on a Wednesday evening around 8pm and were lucky enough to walk in without a reservation. We got a lovely table by the water feature. The ambiance is amazing! Totally immersive in the tiki theme with fun lights, water, and sound effects. We absolutely loved all the small details and creative touches and kept finding cool new things to look at and discuss. The drinks are fun too! If you get a shareable drink, they will do a thunder show for you and even add a fire feature to the drink. Super fun bar! The interior decor is very cool. Love the thunderstorm. Came here on a week night for an after dinner drink, it was around 8pm and the place was already packed! On a random weeknight. Luckily there was no line, so I only had to stand outside by the hostess stand for 5 min before being led inside. Because the place was packed, there was standing room only, which was fine. I am not big on super sweet drinks, so 3 stars for the cocktails, but that is just a preference, if you like sparklers, and drinks in giant fish bowls, you will love it. Heavily disappointed with my last visit to False Idol. The entry system is very flawed and their text messaging system for reservations didn't work. The hostess was definitely overwhelmed by the line and everything felt stressed. When we did get in, it was even more cramped. No seating despite plenty of tables open for "reservations" that never came. They have servers walking around to take drink orders but everything felt very chaotic. Located inside Craft & Commerce, there's another entrance inside the restaurant right when you walk in. Just ask the server you're looking for False Idol and they will walk you right in. If you don't have reservations, you'll be standing most of the time, or at the bar. It is very packed and tight here, also very loud and extremely dark lol. First looking in the menu, there's a wholeeeeeee list of mixed drinks. It's like reading a whole book and we actually read each drink and their description. Some drinks doesn't really explain what's in it that well either, it's very storytelling but you just want to know what's in it lol. I ended up getting the Mac Nut Chi Chi and my friend got the one drink that had an espresso in it. The service was quick which was nice, and we got our pretty drinks! Having the Mac Nut Chi Chi, it's very mild. The drink isn't strong at all and it reminds me of another drink I had before but I couldn't quite name it. It was alright? It's tasty but I would probably try something else next time. My friends drink was a bit more unique and quite fruity. Hers was stronger, but she had the same impression that she would probably try something else. For the drinks here, the price ranged around $15, which is not bad at all. The prices are pretty good for alcoholic drinks. Though, maybe we just didn't try the right drink that was for us? But it was just an okay experience. This is what heaven must be like. This is a little speakeasy/tiki bar that is somewhat hard to find. It is located in the back of another bar, Craft & Commerce, and is not marked very well. You have to know where you are going. For some reason you cannot just walk in and have to be escorted in. I did not have a reservation and did not have to wait very long to find a seat at the bar though. I would say about 8 minutes.But this was on a Tuesday night. I would recommend making a reservation if you have a group and/or are coming on a weekend or peak time. The place is not very big and has a couple of tables and some bar seating. The staff there is awesome. My bar tender was very friendly, courteous, attentive and helpful. There is metered street parking, and commercial garages/lots within walking distance. I recommend parking in a metered spot if you can though. It is much more cost effective. They have a menu filled with all your favorite tropical signature cocktails. I started off with a painkiller. It was delicious and hit the spot. I moved on to a Steve's Rum Barrel. It was a very potent drink and hit like a sledge hammer. I really enjoyed my time here and the bar's vibe. It is a low key, chill spot with a lot of personality. It also has kind of a mysterious vibe as well. This place is dimly lit and I had to use the light on my phone to read the menu. It is a fun little spot, but you better know where you are going, or you will not find it. Also, the bathroom is located outside of the bar and you have to exit and walk back around if you have to use the restroom. I highly recommend finding this place and checking it out for yourself.
