What a fun nightlife spot! If you're looking for a fun place to grab cocktails, this is definitely a spot worth checking out! **Located inside Craft & Commerce Walking into False Idol honestly feels like you've been transported somewhere else. It's hidden behind Craft & Commerce, and once you step inside, the immersive tiki atmosphere really sets the mood. The decor, lighting, and sound effects all come together to make the experience feel fun and memorable. Just know, if you are hoping to sit down, good luck! A lot of reservations are made in advance. However, at the bar, if you see a reservation sign and they're not there yet, staff will let you sit down once it's time to get up for the reserved party. DRINKS: 9/10 The cocktails were creative, well crafted, and definitely strong enough to make you feel like you were getting your money's worth. I also loved how much attention they put into the presentation. Every drink looked like a piece of art and added to the whole tiki experience. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They took the time to answer questions and made great recommendations without making us feel rushed. AMBIANCE: 10/10 This is easily the highlight of the experience. The entire space is beautifully designed, and every little detail makes it feel like you've escaped into a hidden tropical bar. It's cozy, intimate, and unlike any other place I've been to in San Diego. Reservations are definitely worth making since the space is on the smaller side and fills up quickly. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience and ambiance were amazing, the drinks are definitely on the pricier side. I understand you're paying for the craftsmanship and atmosphere, but it's probably not somewhere I'd visit regularly because of that. It's common for tiki bars to be pricey so it was to be expected. Overall, I'm really glad I finally got to experience False Idol. If you're in San Diego and enjoy creative cocktails in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend checking it out at least once!
Went here with advance knowledge of the place during our PHX to SD whirlwind vacation to see Bob Dylan at the Rady Shell. Had to put in our names, as there is only so much space on an early Saturday evening. Took all of 10 minutes before entry was granted. Led inside to a standing room-only table. Lady friend got the Saturn, myself the 151 Swizzle. I probably did the wrong thing and didn't allow the ice packed on top of the swizzle to melt thoroughly enough into the drink to dilute the 151 overproof black Demerara's rum. Nae worries, brah. It was delicious. Affordable tiki-theme cocktails, decor(!) and atmosphere is why this place will remain popular and a must visit when in Sandy Eggo. Top notch!
This place is hidden inside Craft & Commerce which is a quirky little bar itself. There was a wait for entry this past Sunday after 9pm. Staff was also not very attentive to guests' needs, rather just going through the motions. For instance, they noted "standing room only" and that they would eventually seat our party of two. They walked us to an exact spot on the floor to stand and view the menu in the dark (we used our phone flashlights, but it wasn't easy while carrying our belongings too), and they instructed us not to order at the bar in this colorful but dimly lit tiki lounge. We essentially ordered from staff who took our order in the middle of the floor, then we had to hold our drinks, some that came with additional shot glasses, in full hands, as we were never seated. We did find a barrel to set our drinks on later, but their process and expectations for guests was just really weird and impractical. The theme and decor of the setting was lovely, with moments of a lightning and thunder effect that made the experience more immersive. But we were not impressed by the sticky menus and sticky floor, nor the lack of service and minimal help from staff while there. We made the most of our time at False Idol regardless of their shortcomings. The bombay sling and enigma de muerte were pretty decent in quality and flavor, so it's safe to say the drinks aren't the problem here. And though we probably won't return, it was cool for a one-time experience.
We LOVED this spot Drinks were all amazing - sidewinders fang was my favorite - I love passionfruit and it was so good! The interior is super immersive - huge tiki vibes with sound effects included too Def get a resy bc it's not super large and gets busy fast - we walked in around opening time and were able to sit at the bar Service was great / bartenders are so nice and even gave us stickers
They don't serve food here anymore. But the service is very nice. The ambience is like as if you were at Disneyland, which means you're having the best day ever and it's all fun.
Ambiance was amazing, it was like I was in a cave! Great customer service, there was a bit of a wait to get inside and then get a drink order but it was worth it. The drinks were yummy, the Mai Tai was really strong too! I came on a Sunday evening so parking was a bit challenging but I had such a great time. So glad my friend and I made the trip
My wife and I went on a limb and tried to make a last minute reservation but couldn't snag one. So we showed up an hour before our dinner reservation in Little Italy to try our luck -- best decision yet! We were told we could go in but it was going to be standing only. We went for it, ordered some drinks and really only stood for maybe 15 minutes before the hostesses came back and got us set up at a barrel with two barstools. That kind of attentive service right there set the tone for the whole visit! The mai tais are absolutely delicious. Not too sweet, ice cold, refreshing, and strong (word to the wise ) Exactly what a tiki cocktail should be. And the vibes and ambience are amazing! This place is the real deal. Worth the effort to get in however you can!
False idol is a cute tiki bar and very aesthetic especially in the inside room. There was a line on a Friday especially for the inside. The lighting is perfectly dim and the colors inside are cute for pictures. The frozen tiki rum drink we got was very strong and very cold but good. It was also huge.
False idol is a tucked away Hawaiian themed speakeasy behind a restaurant. Reservations are required so be mindful of that before going. Once inside seating is first come first served so the place is insanely crowded with people trying to get drinks. Service is a little confusing as the waiters will come up to you with a menu asking for your order instead of an order at the bar type of thing. Once we actually got a seat things were okay. The menu is mostly rum drinks since this is a rum bar however since I'm not the biggest fan I ordered the only thing with tequila on the menu. My drink was actually really good, it was refreshing, not too sweet or strong at all. I just wish there would be more variety.
My False Idol experience was memorable, albeit blurry toward the end! My boyfriend and I had been on a half-day tour beforehand, but I saw that False Idol was near our hotel and I insisted we stop in for a cocktail before calling it a night. I knew it was a speakeasy but he did not. I was trying to double-check on my phone that Craft & Commerce was the right restaurant its housed in (yes) when he tried to jet set off down the block "to keep looking" rather than listen to me. I yelled, "MOTHER!" by accident and then he did truly leave me hahaha. He resurfaced a few minutes later, and then we walked in. It was 5:15 at the time, so 15 minutes after opening. I had NO IDEA how popular this spot was, nor anything about its nation-wide reputation. I actually didn't know that until two days ago when a Yelp-friend at home here in Richmond, Virginia, exclaimed excitedly when I told her we stopped in. The host who greeted us was kind, informed us there had been a line to get in that day, but that they had one barrel left; we jumped on it of course. It was happy hour, so the first cocktail I ordered was dirt cheap at $9. It was the Imperial Hawaiian with gin, rum, lemon, pineapple, and orgeat. I really shouldn't have ordered a second drink after that one, but I did have the classic Saturn later on in the night and it was absurdly good! Definitely my favorite of the two. The moody tiki vibe was so cool and fun. They even had frogs you could play on the tables. We had some fun neighbors too, which livened up the experience even more. We had a great time and both walked out heavily buzzed. We were asleep by 8 that night, but it was worth it!
Who doesn't love a False Idols Experience, it's hard to get in there occasionally and sometimes have to suck it up and deal with standing room. But If you're a Tiki Lover you have to add this Bar to your trip, it's a true gem and honor to the tiki world, overall experience, smell and vibe is top notch. The cocktails never fail to hit and I'll always stick around to have a zombie before hitting the next spot! False Idols for the win!
Staff was great! Drinks were ridiculously delicious and huge! So yummy! Atmosphere was superb! Highly recommend reservations so you can sunbathing the ones standing were having more fun I think! Bar outside of false idol was also delicious drinks while we waited! A bar within a bar, who knew?!?

I was told by Phoenix tiki bartenders that this was THE tiki spot in SD. So I had to visit, and they were right. It feels like a grotto, cave, and cove all in one. On a Saturday night it was packed, so highly recommend reservations. I was a walk in and was told standing room only until someone leaves the bar which I got lucky and they did. The Macadamia Chi Chi is where it's at! Loved it! So good. The Ube Bae on the other hand could have been better balanced. To get to this tiki speakeasy go to Craft & Commerce, then go through the tiki curtain, you'll see red glowing skulls and finally you're in. read more
What a fun find. Every few minutes a storm comes through and you feel like you are not in California! You are on a tropical island somewhere in Tahiti. The drinks are hard to pick just one. Reasonable prices for happy hour with about 6 drinks to choose from. The hidden bar is in the restaurant and you need to wait for them to get you. Enjoy the experience and know there is no food served! Great pre or post dinner stop. read more

As someone of half Sicilian descent who is obsessed with tiki bars, you tell me there's a tiki bar in Little Italy and I am so there! Had such a nice evening enjoying tiki drinks. We arrived when they opened so there was happy hour specials. I tried two of the drinks off their happy hour menu. The Forbidden Float, which contains: Worthy Park 109, Amontillado Sherry, Banana Liqueur, Condensed Milk, Cane, Lime, and Clarified. The other happy hour beverage I had, was the Chata-Lada: Demerara Rum, Dark Jamaican Rum, Cinnamon Coconut, Pandan, and Pineapple. Both drinks were excellent but I'd say the latter drink was my favorite. I did have a third beverage, a piña colada, my go-to tiki drink and I was actually a litttle disappointed. Only knock I do have is that you've gotta do the basics right and this basic staple of a tiki drink was not done right. But my experience was mostly positive. From the great and friendly service to the amazing tiki decor, I felt like I was at a tropical getaway and I cannot wait to get back there for another tiki staycation. read more
Great experience! Make sure to make a reservation welll in advance and I think it is worth the wait. Went here for a date night last night and the ambiance and cocktails didn't disappoint! Their happy hr was til 6pm and I got the POG-olada which was pretty good! Also got a mai tai which was pretty tasty and strong. I think the hidden gem though is their other menu drinks, there's many other cocktails to choose from and personally I'd rather pay the extra few bucks more and get those because they were seriously really really good. The service was really great too, our server came by regularly to check on us and was super friendly. Even tho they don't have food, she brought us the menu for the restaurant upstairs (craft and commerce) to look at which was nice. The place smelled like incense and was pretty dim lite but lively. It's definitely a good date night place to check out. read more

Location is literally inside Craft and Commerce. Go on the website and get a reservation. People were lining up at 5:00 while we were enjoying the C&C Happy Hour since there's no food. Prices are competitive with other tiki bars. Tiny place so expect a tiny table. Overall a good place. The only problem is parking, expect to circle around the block. read more

A lovely & magical tiki bar hidden ever so casually inside of Craft & Commerce. Funny enough, we couldn't find the entrance to the place until a kind patron sent us in the right direction. We did have a reservation, and there was very little wait at the hostess station. The inside of the bar has splendid and varied decor from the tiki mask wall art, to the fish bowl ceiling, and immaculately adorned bar top. We had 5 drinks total on the night: Alkala Rum Barrel, Panther's Tooth, Coronation, Malambo #1, and Reserve Mai Tai. The Alkala Rum Barrel was spicy, juicy, and proficiently punchy. Panther's tooth is a false idol house-made creation. It is pleasantly unique, fairly sweet and indulgent. Coronation was probably the 2nd best drink of the night. Another false idol creation. Elaborately tasty. It was incredible. Malambo #1, yet another false idol concoction. This drink was crafted to emulate the idea of mango sticky rice, and good lord does it really take you there. The blend of ingredients really shine, and make the flavors stand out. Last on the night was their top shelf/reserve Mai Tai. Our palates appreciated the higher end rum. The Mai Tai is THE Tiki cocktail to rule them all, and it was a perfect treat to finish with. The service was pretty good given how busy the bar was. Our server was friendly and sweet. We also ordered a custom rocks glass, that came with additional goodies courtesy of the staff. This bar is a standout amongst the crowd, and I highly highly recommend. It does Tiki justice and even more on every level. Great drinks, decor, ambiance, staff. I would love to come back and try more of their menu! read more

We love tiki bars and always visit them when we travel! False Idol had been on our list to try for a while and it was worth the wait! Make a reservation! The space is small and intimate and very cool! They have water features, fully tiki decorated ceiling, and a well stocked bar. Appreciate their classic tiki drinks (zombie, three dots and a dash etc) as well as more creative and unique drinks! We opted for the Zombie, Rum Old Fashioned, and the P-O-G-olada. The Zombie was wonderful, strong, and made perfectly! The Rum Old Fashioned was a little off for us only because it had vermouth which overpowered the aged rum it's made with, so for us, personally, it's not a drink we could try again. The P-O-G-olada was delicious. Flash blended so it was slightly frothy and made with guava, passionfruit, orange and then the normal coconut and pineapple from a pina colada. All our drinks were well crafted and with top notch and fresh ingredients. Definitely recommend if you're in need of an escape! read more
Strolling through LI and our friends exclaim..we gotta hit this joint! Got right in but no table was immediately available, so we ordered drinks and took in the scenery until one opened up. Rather dark and mysterious, and a weather event was party of the experience. Drinks are tropical turned, but beware, they are strong! Ambiance is tiki mysterio, service was friendly and prompt, and prices are what you would expect in tourist district. We might not come on our own, but we might bring traveling friends to this party! read more

It was love at first sip with the Coronado Luau Special...but more on that later. We had a reservation at False Idol on a Saturday evening. We're not from San Diego, but we realized upon walking in that reservation probably isn't needed! This is a bar with plenty of standing room, but we were happy to have the reservation to get a table. We had an incredibly large group at the table next to us that almost bled over into our table. Waaaay too many people there. They also had a group of guys that kept coming over to hit on them and do shots with them that kinda pulled us out of the otherwise immersive drinks and surroundings. First round, we had a Saturn and Ube Bae. Saturn was great! Ube Bae also great, but prepare for ultra sweetness! Second round we split a Coronado Luau Special, and from the first sip I knew it was the drink of my dreams. Our server was so kind to give us the recipe before we left. Now we can attempt (key word: attempt) to recreate the orange-y goodness of that drink. We definitely want to come back for more drinks at False Idol, but may take our chances with standing room next time! read more

This is a cool hidden tiki themed speak easy bar. I've been wanting to come here forever and finally got the chance. The drinks come in cute little Christmas cups for the holidays. Anything that had macadamia nut was delicious. I could drink it for daysssss. We had reservations and were able to make them a couple of days in advance. The waiter always checked on us and she was very friendly. Can't wait to try their other cocktails. read more
Funky little place situated beside a restaurant, the glowing skulls in the doorway were a great start. We love the ambience, and the theme. The drinks were not outstanding, but it certainly didn't stop us from finishing them. For example, the Painkiller there was not the same caliber as we found in the islands. This place is great! We stumbled upon this place as there wasn't many places open late on a Thursday night. It was a great choice quite frankly. We were also able to find street parking easily on the Thursday night around 9:30. This place is inside a restaurant but once you walk into the restaurant, you'll be greeted by staff. The restaurant has some taxidermy animals and you definitely can't miss them. I don't remember the name of the restaurant though. However, once you enter into False Idol, the ambience is completely different, with its tiki theme. Because we came in without a reservation, we were provided instructions to stand but we could take bar seating if it ever becomes available. There was no bar seats that opened up, which is fine. We were able to snag a table though as a party was leaving. Our server was super nice about it though and let us sit at the table until the reservation for the table arrived. I ordered the ube bae which was amazing. I was deciding between the matcha and ube but settled for the ube as I wanted something sweeter. It was not a bad choice at all! In fact I'm craving it as I'm typing this review out! Our server/bartender was also really nice. I never got her name but she was super attentive and friendly despite how busy it was! They do also have flashing lighting and rumbling noises for whenever people order a fish bowl so I would definitely keep that in mind if someone is sensitive to flashing lights. Overall, definitely a spot you shouldn't miss. Though I would avoid coming here on weekends knowing how busy it gets even on a weekday! read more

My brother had recommended to me to check out False Idol since I'm in the restaurant industry. We decided to take our family visiting from overseas there. Not realizing how popular and sought after a spot F.I. is, we simply showed up without reservations. We were greeted by a friendly host that also seated patrons to their sister restaurant Craft & Commerce (attached to False Idol). When we requested a spot for False Idol as walk-ups, rather than just turn us away, the host asked us to stand in another line for F.I. and speak to its host to see if she can do some magic to get us into this mystical speakeasy whose entrance looked somewhat like entering into a Disney themed tiki ride. It is here that we first met Crizell. She is one of the sweetest host we have ever met. She greeted us with the biggest smile and in spite of not having a reservation for this wildly popular place, she said with a slight wink "let me see what I can do". Shortly after, she returned and said, "follow me this way". Her words reminded me of the lyrics in the song Hotel California.. You know... "There she stood in the doorway ..... Then she lit up the candle, and showed US the way..." as we followed her in this tunnel like entrance. Then... we all just went "WOW". What an amazing place. It felt like we were in some enchanted den or cave in the world of tiki.. back in time... This place is spot on if you want to experience a tiki bar. This place takes it to another level. The drink menu is insanely creative, themed around tropical drinks that are unique and some quite strong... The bartenders were on top of their game and when one orders a large shareable drink, the lightning and thunder go off. We were having a blast with all the visual effects and the creative cocktails. Every once in a while, Crizell checked in on us.. with that sweet smile, wanting to make sure we were having a wonderful experience. When we were through, she gave us a hug and told us to visit again whenever we were in San Diego. I had told her when leaving that I would write a review. Crizell, my apologies for this long overdue review. You are the best and False Idol is a top notch must go spot for anyone visiting San Diego. If you go, say hello to Crizell from us. read more
I'd planned to check out both Craft & Commerce and False Idol; I didn't realize that the speakeasy was within the restaurant! Customer service was impressively friendly and professional from the start, receiving a warm welcome from both the restaurant's hostess as well as False idol's. All 3 bartenders were friendly, efficient, and attentive. The themed, intimate interior has a fun-&-relaxed atmosphere -- a fun escape from the outside world. No food is served in the bar (adding to the efficient service); the creative cocktails are attractive-and-tasty. Very fun find! read more

Went to False Idol in Little Italy for a rare date night--it's a hidden speakeasy behind a stone tunnel with stunning tiki-meets-Christmas decor. The menu is rum-focused, perfect for sweet cocktail lovers. I had a coconutty Ube Bae, my husband got the limited Zombie, and even my $9 mocktail was amazing! Drinks are reasonably priced, and the festive vibe makes it perfect for a romantic night out. read more

I've heard mixed reviews from others saying a reservation is required, but we walked in on a busy Friday night around 10pm, and waited at the bar of craft & commerce for about 30 min or so before we got in and got a table for 2. These drinks are STRONG! They were really good and they have a bunch of tropical options. It's pretty dim lit and a nice vibe to hang out for a bit. It can get a bit loud but can have a conversation still. read more
We have heard such great things about this place and were super excited to try. Happy hour is M-F 5-6pm and we got there early enough to have snatch a happy hour drink. Service was great. Fabulous tiki bar which is a known tourist spot. Parties and bachelorette parties come here. Reservations are hard to come by. Located in the side room of another establishment interior is well decorated to look like a pacific island along with mandatory dim-lights and occasional thunder sounds. Menu is elaborate. From Mai Tai to Singapore Sling to Rum Old-fashioned to some alcohol heavy drinks (if you are a serious alcoholic) like Navy Grog or the Jet Pilot...and you can get cocktails to share.... I like False Idol but due to small space and hard to come by reservations, I can only give it 4 stars... read more

Visited False Idols with some coworkers. Definitely get on reservations or waitlist as the bar is small inside and very popular. We ordered multiple drinks and they did not disappoint. We lucked out with sitting at the bar, as we were arriving a group of 4 were leaving . If not, it will be standing room only. Definitely worth it to check out and get a few drinks with friends or solo. read more

After many visits to Downtown, we finally got into the speakeasy and I loved it. Everyone was assigned a table and the servers came to you. We were lucky enough to get the seasonal menu where I tried the OG Banana Nog and it was easily one of the best cocktails I've ever had. All my friends tried it and we raved about it all night. It had the perfect amount of banana and creamy with the egg nogg taste. I wish I could go back and buy many more. The ube drink and other seasonal cocktails were great too. Ube drink was super strong though. The ambiance was pretty and the drinks weren't too overpriced. Servers were helpful and it was nice to have a more organized bar as opposed to the restaurant/bar outside that gets really chaotic and we never find a seat at. Great experience and would love to go back! read more

Tip: make reservations and make them early, especially for the weekend! My party of 3 had a great time enjoying at False Idol. My friend was able to snag a reservation for our party of 3 for a Saturday evening at 5:30. Yes, it was early for drinks, but apparently this was the only time available when my friend made the reservation a month in advance. We got super lucky with parking and was able to find a metered spot a couple blocks away. Parking is free after 6, so we only paid a dollar or two for parking for the whole night. Not bad! FYI False Idol is located inside another bar called Craft and Commerce, so look for that and the huge DEMAND LESS sign in front. We checked in with the front staff, and someone came to bring us to our table after a couple minutes. The decor inside is super pretty with colorful balls of light placed all over the ceiling. Even though we went the weekend before Thanksgiving, they already had Christmas decor up everywhere, which made it feel very festive. We got a nice cozy table in the corner of the bar. The lighting is quite dim inside, so it was really hard to read the menu with the tiny words. We had to use the flashlight on our phones to read the menu properly. Most drinks on the menu are rum-based, as you'd expect from a tiki bar. The stronger drinks are on the back, as are the punchbowls for sharing. Since there were so many drinks on the menu, I asked our server for some recommendations. She said their two most popular drinks are the mai tai and a coconut drink called Nut Chi Chi. I tried two different drinks: Nut Chi Chi ($14) and Tuscan Toucan ($15). The Nut Chi Chi was delicious and a must drink for any coconut lover. The Tuscan Toucan was okay but not my favorite (I was expecting something more citrus-y). My friends tried the Ube Bae ($15), which is very strong on the ube flavor if you like that, Three Dots and a Dash ($14), and the Jet Pilot ($17). Next time I come, I'd like to come with a larger group so we can try one of the punch bowls. They served with fire in the middle of the bowl and look super epic. read more

Coming from Wisconsin (where we are used to some pretty lax rules) next month and wondering if we come around opening time on a Wednesday evening, are school - age children allowed inside?
I would say no, because it's a bar. But you could call and ask just in case.

Yes! We do book up quite fast. We always run a waitlist, nightly. The waitlist can be for standing room, the bar or a table if we have any cancellations.
Can't get a reservation! What's the chance of getting a walk in? Late on a Friday night for 2.
They'll let you in on a space available basis. It's tight in there, and weekends are usually packed. You may have to just stand the entire time you're in there. If you're only planning to have a drink or two, it won't be too bad.

Two tops go pretty quickly via Opentable! The waitlist is a great tool. We fill the bar and our high tops then move to standing room. Just come in any day during service and add your party size, name & number. We’ll text you once we have any space.…

Yes they do take walkins. For small parties of one or two. Only if they do have room. The earlier in the night the better. I think they open at five or six.
