I almost want to gate-keep this place. When you find a hidden gems and you're afraid it's going to end up on one of those DFW love Instagram/tiktok post and ruin it. Lol But I also want to support this small restaurant and brag about literally how delicious everything is. From the empanadas that are cheesy and meaty you could eat as a meal alone, to all the flavors of each sauce they offer is exceptional. The poblano sauce is so good, I'd like to get a job in the kitchen for the recipe. We also asked for a side of the mole sauce just to try, it was smoky, sweet, and the right amount of spices. The tacos remind me of the tacos I get in Mexico with the grilled pineapple and picked onions. The salsa offered with the chips is warm and I love that. Will definitely be a go to restaurant for me. I have now ordered takeout from Familia once as well as had lunch in the restaurant. Both experiences were very good. I forgot to snap a picture but I'll list some things I tried: Empanadas- 10/10- a must order. Flavor, texture, and taste are all amazing. Molé enchiladas- the molé is so good- especially for Dallas since most places are Tex Mex and molé is more Mexican. Definitely order if this is in your "taste profile." Lunch specials- I don't even know if this is on their website but they have a great lunch menu and they have a lunch combo special where you can pick two items for $10.50 and it comes with rice and beans. I ordered the cheese enchilada and the mini chimichanga. Full disclosure I didn't eat the mini chimichanga because I didn't know it was covered in queso and I hate queso (unpopular opinion- I know). I loved the enchilada though and it had chili con carne sauce which was delicious. Rice and beans were also very good. Next time I'll just say no queso on the chimi. The restaurant is really tiny but cozy and you can tell it is family owned. Definitely will be a regular spot for me and will be back. read more

Familia has a small dining room so you get get excellent care from the wait staff. I was immediately greeted and had a drink, chips and salsa before I knew it. Gloria guided me toward an excellent pollo poblano dish that was expertly cooked with delicious green sauce that topped the sliced chicken breast stuffed w jack cheese. When my husband and I were dating 20 years ago, we frequented the Stockyards and loved a taco truck at 2 am with amazing tapatios. This place has a better version and I don't have to wait until the middle of the night! So good with cabbage and a creamy sauce. The brisket inside is so good! This is a very small restaurant with limited seating, but that's probably why the food is so outstanding. It's not Tex-Mex, it's full-on authentic Mexican, and we loved every bit of it. The server was incredibly attentive, helping us with our selections and checking in often. Every dish was bursting with flavor, even the chips and salsa were amazing! I recently discovered familiar restaurante while I looking to get some mexican food after work. I stopped by and looking over the menu, they have all the staples such as enchiladas. I decided to try a few things so I got an order of enchiladas as well as the pollo con mole. The food was absolutely delicious and the mole sauce was super rich and flavorful. I think we may have just chosen the wrong dish. The service was excellent and friendly. We chose the mango salad which was very good. The fajita chicken in it was really good. The pollo mole was ok, in that the chicken fell off the bone. But there was a flavor in the mole sauce I couldn't quite place, that we didn't care for. It was served with beans,, rice and homemade flour tortillas, which were all good. That's why I'm thinking we just didn't order the right dish. Delicious food in an intimate space. The first time i visited the restaurant, i was surprised when i walked in because it felt as if i was entering a ma and pa space leaving the big chains surrounding it outside (literally). We searched out this restaurant to try something new. The seating is very limited. There are a mix of 10 chairs and booths. The service was quick and friendly. Now to the food. We had an appetizer, some enchiladas and caldo. No beer or wine. The picosa enchiladas were very spicy to a point where they are not enjoyable. The beef enchiladas were good. The caldo was tasty. The appetizer was "ok". The only issue we had was the pricing for the amount of food received. We had 5 folks and our total was $120. The plates were small, so the pics look like normal, but the plates played a huge part in the "look" of making the plates look full. One of the best meals I've actually ever had. The green salsa was sublime. The empanadas? Delightful. The burrito supreme -- a masterpiece. Try to save room for desert. I tried their flan, my first time ever trying ANY flan, and I fear it can only get worse from here. My gluttony got the best of me. Overwhelmed with satiety and bliss, i sat there for 15 minutes breathing through my nose until my body finally adjusted to the enormous meal I had just shoved down my gullet. Have I found my favorite Mexican restaurant in Irving? Maybe. Have I found the best home-made (corn & flour) tortillas? - Most definitely!! A little place at the end of a strip mall on MacArthur, it actually looked closed when we arrived with all the shades drawn. (Hot tip... they let you discretely bring in beers from the liquor store directly next door. I had seen the great Yelp reviews and knew it had only been open a few months. It is a pretty small dining room with maybe 10 tables, but cutely decorated on a budget. Our server was very connected to the restaurant and making sure service was efficient. They set you up with a basket of what I believe are house made tortilla chips and 2 salsas. The green one is fantastic. We ordered the tabilitas (short ribs cut Korean style, served in a sizzling pot of juicy, salty magic sauce.) We cut the meat off the bones and placed it in the (house made!) tortillas and then dipped that into the sizzling sauce. When we ordered our served asked "corn or flour tortillas?" I could not decide so he gave us both, I normally am a flour tortilla gal, but these corn tortillas were very light and nearly indistinguishable from the flour one. SOOOO good. Our other entree was the chicken poblano. It was a pounded and tender, grilled chicken breast, topped with plenty of cheese and bright green poblano sauce. WOW, just really a unique but seemingly authentic mexican dish. I know it wasn't light, but the freshness almost made it seem healthy. It wasn't overly greasy. Each entree came with some beans and rice. The beans were nice and brothy with chunks of onion and peppers. I went there because of how high it was rated on yelp. Got the mole chicken , didn't like it because it had a slight bitter taste to it in my opinion. However I only took 2 bites and asked if I could send it back. They said no. Which I'm confused because I thought it was customary at a restaurant if you don't like it you're able to send it back for whatever else you want lol. Second, their chips and salsa, I could eat the chips by themselves, they where soo good. But why would I? their salsas where excellent. I ordered the pork guiso, and it came out piping hot, it was excellent, both visually and flavorfully. Perfect rice, and excellent beans. Fresh tortillas, I went with both flour and corn, because I can never make up my mind. This is obviously a family run restaurant and the service was authentic and warm. Friendly and family-owned. I'm glad that I discovered Familia early in my extended stay in Irving. Tucked into a corner of a strip mall, it serves satisfying (and authentic) Mexican fare. My favorite is the Chile Relleno, an egg-battered Poblano pepper, stuffed with brisket served with fresh, house-made tortillas (try the corn!).
