I wandered into Family Cafe this morning after having blood work done, which is not an activity that inspires joy or optimism. It was bitter cold outside, and the dining room inside was calm with only a few tables occupied as if everyone had agreed to be gentle with the day or perhaps remain in hibernation. I was led to a booth with a perfect view of the television already playing reruns of The Price is Right. My menu appeared quickly, followed by hot coffee that did its job without complaint. I warmed enough to begin to feel human again. After a few minutes the waitress came over and sat down on the bench opposite me to take my order. It struck me as both efficient and intimate in the best possible way. I ordered two eggs over easy with corned beef hash hash browns and an English muffin. She nodded as if this was sensible, and disappeared back into the kitchen. Then the place started to fill up. Not hectic, but certainly alive. People started filing in and it became immediately clear that I was surrounded by regulars. The staff knew everyone by name, and the customers knew theirs. People came out from the kitchen just to say hello. Stories were exchanged about recent trips, grandchildren and illnesses. This cafe was not just serving breakfast, it was serving continuity. This is a social institution disguised as a place that sells eggs. Despite being the only obvious outsider I was treated with the same warmth and attention as everyone else. No tests were administered, no paperwork required. The food arrived and it was good. It wasn't revolutionary, and that's exactly the point. Eggs and hash aren't supposed to surprise you. They're supposed to show up on time and do their duty, and they did so admirably. It was honest food, and it was affordable. The service was top-notch. Places like this are a dying breed. I'm very glad I wandered into this one. Five easy stars. read more

First time I have stopped in for breakfast. The menu has plenty to choose from with several types of Eggs Benedict including Eggs Florentine which I selected. The poached eggs were perfect and accompanying ingredients and sauce was very tasty, I would order again. The coffee was good and the wait staff attentive keeping my cup filled. Family Cafe occupies the former Starbucks store on Whitehorse-Mercerville Road in Hamilton, NJ. Its large windows let in lots of light, so on a sunny morning the sun cascades in to brighten any mood. The shop looks clean, especially in all the sunlight. Staff wears black, and seem to have everything covered. My server was friendly and conscientious, although there was a feeling that she was being observed by other workers, by the overheard comments passed among them that sounded somewhat disparaging. Seemed uncalled for. The menu is comprehensive, and I went with the Cinnamon French Toast (3 slices) and coffee. My first visit, and the listed prices appearing post Covid high, I wanted to check out what the quality of the meals were before eating a $20 breakfast, that cost half that a few years ago. Wise decision. While the coffee was hot and strong, and the FT pretty good, my overall impression was that my breakfast was just average. Nothing to gin me up about returning for more. Family Cafe is a nice small diner style kitchen, with a bustling operation for local residents and business people. Their food is good enough to keep them coming. read more

Excellent location in Hamilton Township for breakfast. I ordered the Family Cafe Omelette with home fries. You get a nice size portion and it's so delicious. The waitress Maria is so friendly and nice and makes sure customers are well taken care of. Adel there the cook is awesome. Nice and clean all around with nice booths to eat at. I recommend to all of you whether in the area or just passing through to give them a try. read more

It is a rarity that the Broke Gourmet has a completely poor experience at a restaurant. Sadly, the new "Family Cafe" that took over the former Starbucks location, was extremely disappointing. We went today for brunch. The parking lot was around 2/3 full, and as we walked to the door, we saw a green bench...and a standing cigarette ash unit. As I got to the door, I could smell smoke coming from the tall unit. Inside, there was a woman, who- without so much as a smile or "welcome, can I help you?" greeting - said abruptly "eating in? Table 2" as she gestured to an empty booth. We sat down. And waited. And waited. We noticed tvs on the walls, each tuned to a Sunday political show. Frankly, not what most folks want to see at brunch. After about 5 minutes, a younger waitress came to us, and again, with no greeting or welcome, flatly said "you want menus?" Uhm... yes. How else are we supposed to know what you serve, what you charge, or what we will order? The menu was impressive in its broad range of breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices. From eggs to matzoh ball soup to turkey dinner. Snacks, sandwiches, and wraps. We ordered a veggie omelet (onion, tomato, peppers, spinach) with home fries and an English muffin. $12.99, including coffee. The price frankly seemed a bit high. Mrs. Broke Gourmet ordered oatmeal, a bowl costing $6.99. This seemed high as well. Mrs. BG asked the server if it came with any toppings. "Three blueberries" was the abrupt reply. Mrs. BG also ordered a Belgian waffle. A single waffle was $7.99. Then... we waited. Where was my coffee? About ten minutes later, the waitress brought the oatmeal and waffle. No coffee. There was also no butter to put on the waffle. Mrs. BG asked if they had any whipped cream. The waitress said yes, and came right back with a can. Without asking Mrs. BG if she wanted it on the waffle, the waitress shot a mound of whipped cream on the waffle. As I continued to wait for my omelet, I noticed a man come out of the Cafe, sit on the bench, and lighting up a cigarette. Then Mrs. BG asked me to taste the oatmeal. I did, and... unlike any oatmeal that we were ever served, this was very salty. Clearly, a lot of table salt had been added to the oatmeal. Not at all as it should be cooked and served. I suggested adding syrup and brown sugar to cut the salty taste. Finally, several minutes after Mrs. BG was served, my omelet and home fries came. But oops... still waiting on the English muffin. I must say that the portions were huge. This looked more like a four-egg omelet, and the folded mound of sliced cooked potatoes was easily twice what most places would serve. Unfortunately, the omelet was a bit overcooked, with the eggs very firm. And the home fries... well... it was obvious that the chef had put a large mound on the griddle, pressed them down, and then left them too long before flipping them. On the plate, they had been rolled into sort of a burrito shape, and the griddled side was dark brown, and hard. The potatoes inside were tasty, but again, had not been cooked evenly. The muffin came a couple of minutes later, and was thankfully well-prepared and tasty. About five minutes later, our server, walking past us towards the front counter, said in passing "how is everything?" Being tired from a long day before, and with a lot to do today, I decided to let it go in the moment. "OK," I fibbed. We got the check, and I went to the counter to pay the $30 bill. There was a younger woman at the register. She was wearing the skin-tight pants popular today. But these appeared to have a spooky Halloween design, with gaping-mouthed orange faces all over them. Including one right across the backside. Again, not the height of hospitality good taste. Sitting behind the counter was the man who had been outside smoking. Presumably an owner. He gave us the first smile and warm tone we had experienced since walking in. He asked how everything was. Our server was there, as was the older rather grumpy woman who told us where to sit. Family, perhaps? I simply nodded, said everything was ok, and left. If "Family Cafe" wants to survive and thrive, they will have to do better. Both in providing welcoming service, and in providing well-cooked food at a reasonable cost. With an established good diner down the street, and the PJs chain apparently building on the old Fame restaurant site across the street, the competition is, and will be, strong. I would also suggest that having smokers literally next to your front door is not a good way to welcome customers. The next time Mrs. BG wants to go out for brunch on a Sunday, we will not be going back to the Family Cafe. read more

i used to order from here all the time until this past weekend. found a 2" black hair incorporated into my western omelette. uber eats wasn't answering my complaint so I called the cafe. after speaking with the person who answered the phone, she assured me that she would have someone call me back and she seemed disturbed by what I found. I explained that we couldn't eat any of our food and I had to throw it all away. no one from there ever contacted and I will never order from there again. $46.00 in the trash. read more

Customer service was ass. How do you put someone at the front desk who doesn't speak good English? Order was messed up. When I got order didn't have the to go essentials to eat my food. No syrup in my bag. Had to wait to eat my food. By the time I got syrup it was cold and soggy. Way too overpriced for food and service. Small careless portions could have got better quality half the price somewhere else. First time experience was garbage, so upset wouldn't even return on desperate day. I've been to this restaurant twice in the last two weeks. I don't anticipate going back a third time. The quality of food doesn't match the prices charged. I don't mind spending more when something is fresh delicious and satisfying. My experience was adequate but if your going to charge for food at such an inflated price then one's experience should rise above adequate. First time here. Sounded good from the reviews. Unfortunately we didn't have an enjoyable experience. Got grilled cheese. It was barely "grilled ". The American cheese wasn't even melted. Wife got porkroll egg and cheese. The sandwich was dry like some how over cooked but again the cheese was barely melted. Fries were not seasoned at all.
