Familia/family is the best car service in the area. Reasonable rates (the cheapest to the airports), and prompt, friendly service. The drivers also know how to effectively maneuver during rush hour, which is appreciated. My only complaint is that there is a fee to use a credit card. The driver came to take us to the airport with a trunk full of garbage. He had to move it around to make room for our luggage, during which one of his bags leaked hot wet garbage juice on our suitcases. He also was late. He didn't give us change back when we paid, taking a tip for himself we would not have given for his terrible service. When I called to complain the guy on the phone said I had wasted my time calling if I wasn't going to use their service again and then said "suck my dick." read more

Just what we needed at 5am. Driver showed up on time. The fare was the same as what we were quoted over the phone. We got to the airport on time with no hassles. We called Arecibo first but the phone just rang and rang. Nobody picked up. We called back again and finally they picked up but they were difficult to deal with on the phone. First of all, Family Car Service is cheaper than any car service that I've found that will cart my ass to the airport before 5 in the morning. Second of all, they are not only on time each time I've called, they are early. In fact, when I was LGA-bound the day after Thanksgiving at 4:15 a.m., the car arrived at 3:45 a.m. Family Car called to let me know that the car was outside. When I responded, "I don't need it until 4:15"--I was groggy, sorry--I was told, "just go down when you're ready." So nice! I have had bad experiences with "flat rates" changing from one day to the next with other car companies (eh hem, Arecibo and Promenade), and I'm happy to report that it is consistently $30 every time from DUMBO to LGA. My drivers have always been courteous and safe while driving. Never is there a cell phone in hand or a handsfree device in play, which makes me feel better on the BQE. Also, it seems that Family Car may be the only car service company that recognizes one does not have to drive as though we are in Cairo or Beruit. 60 MPH on the freeway is just fine. No need for 95 MPH. Why don't I give Family Car the 5th star you ask? Well, at 4:15 in the morning in the drizzling 40 degree, post-Thanksgiving weather that we had recently, a gal sometimes likes a little help with her bag. No such help was offered, but this is minor in comparison with all of the other aforementioned goodies that were offered by Family Car. I highly recommend these folks! read more

I read the Yelp reviews and decided to try this car service to book a ride from Brooklyn to JFK. The guy who picked up was unfriendly and difficult to hear. He gave little feedback and there were so many pauses that I wasn't sure if he got my order or if we got disconnected. Then I asked him for a quote and he said $45. After we hung up, I began to hesitate about the price and called up another car service that had similar ratings on Yelp. They charged me only $35! I've lived in Park Slope for 3 years and have taken this car service many times. The only good thing about them is they are fast to arrive. But more than once we have had rude drivers that refuse to take us into the city. Today I was late for an appointment, the R train wasn't running to Union Street and so I went to family. They told me to wait 5 minutes, and then 10 minutes later my driver arrived and then refused to take me into the city. They also charge a $3 fee if you have a dog. Ridiculous. Never again. Family Car Service SAVED our ^SSES, plain and simple. At 4:45AM in the middle of a snow storm, another car service called us and said they could not "find" a driver to take us to the airport at our reserved time of 5AM. After screaming that I would sue them if we didn't catch our plane, I called Family. No problem, they said, 5AM sharp. On 15 minutes notice, they had a huge SUV outside our door waiting for us. Our driver was pleasant and polite, and drove us safely through the snow to JFK. For CHEAP. Family Car Service has earned my praise and my patronage for a lifetime. It is true that their switchboard has a "nowhereland" line that rings and rings on occasion. But if you call back, you usually get someone on your second try. I have used this car service for over 7 years. They are always quick to answer the phone and dispatch the cars (by the time I call, collect my stuff and walk out the door, the car is usually just pulling up). This place only gets 3 stars, however, because the quality of cars they use is inconsistent. One time it will be the usual black sedan and the next it will be a junky minivan with no muffler. And sometimes the drivers speak so little English, that I have to give directions in Spanish (often callng upon the Spanish version of the alphabet to spell things out). Many of the cars reek of stale cigarette smoke or obnoxious air fresheners (or both), but as long as I can roll my window down, I don't mind too much. read more

Flat rate to JFK, fast, friendly and clean car. I got off work early and had to change my pick up time last minute to thirty minutes earlier and guess what? It was no problem. Yes, the dispatch radio is always on, and yes it's annoying to pay with a card, but if you need to go to manhattan right after hurricane sandy, or go to the hospital, or go to the airport, they are always there. This is my favorite car service in the Park Slope area. They always show up on time and the prices are very reasonable (similar to yellow taxi). The only challenge is using a credit card, as they call your number out over the radio system-- and they charge extra. This makes me a little uncomfortable, so I *try* to have cash on me. read more

First experience was great and fare was good. The second time I booked a car a day in advance, and it didn't show up. The third time I booked a taxi for a friend, then called back 10 minutes later to book a taxi for myself. Avoid this place!!! I called these guys to pick my GF and I up and take us over to our new apartment 12 blocks away. I had a couple of suitcases and a Vacume Cleaner so I ordered a mini van. They quoted me $7 over the phone and told me he would be there in 5 minutes. 30 minutes later when the car showed up the guy paid no attention to my complaint that he was late. They he charged us $15 to take us 12 blocks. THEN bitched about not getting a tip. We accidentally forgot the Vacume in the back of the Van and in the middle of the night the driver left it outside our door in the rain all night and CUT THE POWER CORD! Just plain ridiculous as we even paid more than double the quoted fair he was pissed we didn't tip him for late service and a horribly dirty van. I called to complain and the dispatch could not have cared less. Avoid this place and especially car #74. read more

One star because of unethical driver. Dispatcher quoted $27 from Park Slope to Grand Central Station. Upon arrival my daughter was told it was $35; she gave driver $40 and got $5 back which she gave him for a tip, naively not questioning the charge. Called dispatcher who was told by driver that he quoted her $25; impossible! Why would he charge less than quote and give her $5 change from $40. Driver returned difference to us 2 hours later and volunteered that he was "not a crook"...methink thou doest protest too much. read more

Great car service in the neighborhood. Never had a problem. I think they are a smaller operation so they try harder. Someone always picks up the phone right on time and is courteous and thorough. They are only getting one star be aside its not possible to give zero stars. First of all whenever you call the phone rings and rings. When they do decide to pick up they tell you a car will pick you up 5 minutes later and long and behold after 30 minutes waiting they show up. I had to go to the airport. They send me a driver that didn't even know the streets in Brooklyn and claimed he's been working here for years. The only reason I have continued using them is because they have been in the nieghborhood for about 20 years. I know with this unreliability I should just sign up to uber or find a more dependable cab service company. They used to have good drivers but now they hire anyone. My wife and I regularly use Family Car Service to get from Park Slope to the airport and around Brooklyn. The dispatcher answers quickly, and a car is sent to our place within 5 minutes. It is amazing. When we reserve a car for an early morning airport run, they are always early. And the prices are very reasonable ($35 to LGA) and consistent. Most recently, we discovered that they will pick you up at the airport for the same price as they will take you there. We called when we landed and the car met us at the curb 20 minutes later. I had to call the dispatch 3 times to find out where the car was. The dispatcher explained that a car would arrive in about 5-7 minutes. 15 minutes later, there was no car. I called the dispatcher again and was told a white car was arriving in about 5 minutes. Then, I received a text with the car's license plate number. 5 minutes later, there was still no car! I called again and a different dispatcher answered. He told me to look for a black car. I explained that I was told to wait for a white car and he said this was a "misunderstanding." A black car was waiting on the side of the street and the driver did not know that his company had been given a ride to pick from Family. Family failed to communicate this information with me and never apologized for their miscommunication. In the end, a 5 minute wait turned into a 20 minute wait for a car to come pick me up from my location. read more

YMMV, but my experience with them was a nightmare. They do say it's $35 price to the airport as advertised, but since I never actually got a car, I can't tell you if that's what they end up charging you. I called for a car to the airport aroud 2:40 pm, and they told me it would be there in 15 minutes. Easy peasy, he seemed to the know the address, and he was brusque, but friendly. 3:05, no car. 3:10, no car. Over the course of the next 30 minutes and 6 phone calls, his friendliness brought down into abrupt hangups and shouted instructions at who appeared to the be the driver. On the last call, he simply barked a number at me and told me to call it. I assumed this was the driver but no, what he had done was actually thrown me some friend of his' number. I have no idea who these people were, but 2 minutes later, a livery cab pulled up and I got taken to the airport. They tried to then charge me $40 for a ride where the driver blasted Spanish music and stapled and folded documents while he drove. I eventually threw $40 at him just to get away from his disgustingly unbuckled pants. I would not use again. read more

Complete scumbags!!! My friends and I called for a car from Family for our friend who is in a wheelchair. He was going to the Lower East. We called for him and asked how much. After they picked him up (he needs no help getting in and grabbing his chair in the car after him) and then dropped him off, he called us to let us know that he was home. He then told us they charged him at least ten dollars more than they told us when we asked. I then called Family Car Service and asked them why they had charged him so much more. Their response was "It is illegal for us to pick up people in wheelchairs. It is a New York City law." Then, just for the hell of it, I asked how much it would be if I took my dog in a car, they said "no extra charge". So, they WILL pick you up for no extra charge with and animal, but if you are in a wheelchair, good luck. If there was a way I could give them NO stars, I would. read more

I had a terrible experience with this car service. They don't even deserve one star. After I decided to pay with my credit card and gave the dispatcher my card number at which point the dispatcher informed me that I didn't have to wait for the confirmation and he'd let the driver know the confirmation number via radio, the driver refused to let me out the car. He had locked the car and there was no way I could get out unless he unlocked it. It was almost 1am and I told him that dispatcher told me I didn't have to wait. He still wouldn't unlock the door. I asked the driver to give the dispatcher a call to clarify which he refused to do as well and kept me locked in the car for a good 3-4 minutes until the dispatcher radioed him. read more

I called 2 days before my flight for a 4:45 AM pickup. The morning of I come outside and no one was there. I called the office and no one was picking up. Thank god for Lyft otherwise I don't know what I would have done. Never using car service again. Then I get a call from my driver at 4:45 PM telling me he is outside and I told him my flight was this morning, and he goes "yeah, yeah" and hangs up on me! So unprofessional. They have the WORST customer service I've encountered. Last night's experience was the clincher--I will not use them again. I left the blackberry in the car and as soon as got out and was 20 feet away my earpiece beeped, so I knew the phone was in the cab. Within five minutes I called the Family car service and was basically blown off -- they told me they could not contact the driver/search and asked me to call in an hour. I of course also called my blackberry but no one picked up. I tried again in half an hour and again was told they cannot do anything now, to call later. Later they did not find it. I tried next day, and got again bad -- call later, and when I did--well the driver is gone for the day. In the past their drivers were late, and the cars did not come to the entrance, but stayed across the street,. They clearly do not care about their customers! read more
