First of all, I'm NEVER disappointed with this establishment! They always go above and beyond to make the best food with the best ingredients. We had some to go orders for a work lunch today and the lady on the phone was super polite and very accurate with our order. I appreciate that she took the time to read it back to me exactly as we ordered it even though they were very busy! The order was ready quickly and everyone raved about their dish. The veggie grinder is PERFECT and full of flavor! The potato salad is always delicious, too! I had a hard time determining how many stars. However after much internal debate I went with 5 stars. The food was good, good enough to keep is there after appetizers. The moussaka and mushroom pie were good but weren't mind blowing. The crab cakes were great just a hint of Old Bay and full of crab, perfect dish. Baklava was just a bunch of nuts mashed between some phyllo dough, the dish was missing the carefully layered effect you typically expect. Rating all of the food I would say 4 stars. The service we received from our server pushed us up to the 5 star. Both aspects of my experience were good but when combined I would say I was very satisfied with my experience. read more

Made reservations for lunch. I'm local and try this place every 5 years or so. Waitress #1 came for our drink orders. Asked for sparkling water. The waitress didn't know what that was. She said she'd check. Another waitress came to our table and took our drink orders again. She didn't know what that was either, so I said, "like pellegrino or Perrier." I then asked about the Spanokopita, because I love Greek food and it's the only reason why I'd go to FB in the first place. She thought it was a sandwich (it isn't), so asked me if I wanted chips or carrots with it. I said carrots. I ordered a small Greek salad too and my sister got the Greek veggie sandwich. The Greek salad was sad. Tired romaine lettuce, weak tomatoes, no seasoning. The Spanokopita was ok, nothing great. It didn't taste buttery and the side carrots were raw. Why would anyone want raw carrots as a side? Is this really a side for sandwiches?! Why not some Greek lemon potatoes? It was also garnished with chopped romaine. Why? Parsley is a garnish, not lettuce. My sister's sandwich had chopped romaine on it too. It was just limp and bland. The bread was good. Maybe the meat dishes are good. I don't know. I just want some good Greek food and this place doesn't have it. I guess I'll try it again in another decade. read more

We arrived a little after 11 a.m. and there were people at one other table. By the time we left, there were at least 5 or 6 tables full. Four and five star reviews.....you've got to be kidding me! Waitress said Brunch was being served until 2 p.m. and also gave us the Breakfast/Brunch menu. Several things looked interesting, but I had already eaten breakfast so opted for lunch instead. I ordered an Italian Grinder sandwich with chips. Friend had the Spinach salad with salmon. The food was okay...that's it. Nothing special or note worthy about either one. Have had much better. It reminded me of a place where a lot of downtown business folks eat during the week. Waitress was friendly. Food came in a timely manner. Perhaps the dinner menu offers more variety, but doubt I'll drive all the way over to Owensboro to eat there again. read more

From my experience, I think that Famous Bistro is the best place to eat dinner in Owensboro. It's fairly expensive, but the food is solid. I've had their fish, and it's well cooked and very fresh. As for apps - the shrimp and the spanakopika (I can't pronounce it to save my life) are good bets. The creme brulee is a great dessert. I like to think of it as a Greek/Italian/American hybrid. They call themselves international. Constantly changing specials and a rotating beer list also give them some additional street cred. The employees and owner are really nice and very pleasant to chat with, just be sure you're not in a rush :) it's not super fast. read more

While the Ono was not even on the same planet as the lamb shank it was nicely prepared. The service is exceptional. You will not be disappointed with the scallops. Pretty bummed about my experience here. I came for dinner , and was bummed that they didn't have any sandwiches or gyros on the dinner menu. On the flip side ...The waiter was super kind, and recommended the bourbon chicken. This wasn't your average bourbon chicken, as the chicken was fried and bone-in. That being said, The bourbon sauce was delicious, not too sweet.. and the chicken was moist and cooked perfectly. The only downside was, the chicken portion was extremely small. Only about 6 bites of chicken.... the rest was bone. The meal came with potatoes and broccoli. The broccoli was cooked perfectly , but the potatoes were drenched in salt. They were inedible. The waiter gave me a cookie when I left, since it was my first time at the restaurant. Unfortunately the cookie was dry, crummy , and tasted stale. read more

Open in 1993, the Bistro has legs. The aroma is appetizing and although we were there in the late afternoon, food was delicious. The waiter bragged about the Philly Cheese Steak and explained the differences between a grinder and hoagie. We all had the white chili - what a good choice on the first chilly day of fall!! I wanted to try the moussaka, but we were pressed for time. The only think I would ask is that the restroom get a thorough cleaning. The room is not disgusting, but there is dust caked everywhere. Great little spot. I haven't been in a while, but my mother used to cook here and I would be in there all the time to bug her or to see the owners who were family friends. Eventually I got hooked on gyros and their Greek salads (yum!). Honestly, anything you order there is really very good. It does get a little crowded at times, but the servers do an excellent job of making sure everyone is taken care of and I have never seen anyone leave unhappy. The prices are a little higher for the area, but the food is made from quality ingredients, and you need to pay a premium for those. I gotta tell you; it would be difficult giving a bad review to this place. I lived here in Owensboro for several years in my younger days and have been away for awhile now. My wife and I wanted to grab something to eat and I remember this place as a lunch takeout kind of place back in 2005, but didn't realize they served dinner as well. They have an extensive beer list and the food is well prepared, and oh-so delicious!!! My wife had the chicken marsala and I had the pasta carbonara with a side of Italian sausage. Mmmm! Great little place right in the heart of downtown Owensboro. I walked along the waterfront from my hotel to get here last night. This is my second visit to Famous Bistro while visiting Owensboro. Both times Bernard has been an awesome server, super friendly and helpful. During my first visit, a few months back, I tried the hummus plate, Athena pizza and baklava- ALL were super Yummy and delicious. Last night I tried the Spanakopita (I think that's how you spell it) and for dessert I had the Ek Mek, which was absolutely delicious.
