This is MY FIRST HAND CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE WITH Fannie Mae. I personally ordered chocolate covered strawberries to be delivered to my mom for Mother's Day from Fannie Mae and received a box of strawberries that was in horrible condition. The berries were strewn around the box and the chocolate was broken chocolate off most of the berries. It was probably the worst gift anyone could have received. I called Fannie Mae and they told me that they could resend the gift. My response was "why would I want you to resend a Mother's day gift days after mother's day?" I have been to Chicago but have not had a chance to go to try Fannie May since they introduced the FM line from Norman love. I am, however, fortunate enough to have a friend who loves chocolate as much as I do and who happens to also be kind and generous. The FM Artisan line are a delight. I was gifted with a box from Norman Love years ago and forgot to Yelp them and now I am determined to yelp the FM Artisan Line. So go tell it on the mountain! These chocolates are great, and a visual pleasure, beautiful artistry and incredible flavor combined! I had the fruit assortment this time, and each chocolate had such a burst of intense fruit flavor that you can savor it on your tongue after it has melted down your throat. With flavors like orange passion fruit and chocolate cherry and pear caramel..oh.. totally delightful. These chocolates are so pretty I waited a while to eat the first box because they were so pretty. The chocolate itself is delicate, not too sweet, just perfect chocolate shells to hold the fruit ganache and assorted fruit fillings. On Mother's Day I stopped by the store to get a box of chocolate for my co-worker. The task literally should've taken me less than two minutes, but I was just absorbed by variety of candies in the store and beautiful wrapping paper. During my visit shop attendants were giving out tasting pieces of chocolate to try out and had a mint one. Normally, I am not a huge fan of mint and chocolate, but that one was extremely well put together. The prices are better than what you'll find in the airport, so stock up while you can! The customer service could use improvement. I was greeted with a hello but no offer of a sample. However, other guests were offered samples. Even when I came back with questions and ended up buying ~$60 worth of chocolate, the associate moved the sample tray away and I had to ASK for a sample. The prices of the boxes are not clearly marked, nor is the expiration date. It's inferred to expire 1 year after the packaging date, but a gift recipient may confuse the packaging date for the expiration date and think you're giving them old chocolate. read more

My first Fannie May Chocolate experience! It's a Chicago staple Ive always heard about but never got the chance to have any. Until recently! The store front area is still under construction but the business is open for business. Upon entering we were greeted with a warm welcome, the clerk told us her names, asked if we needed help, and then offered us samples of toffee. But FULL SIZE samples. I was already amazed. We bought a custom box of chocolates as a gift for someone, and the other clerk was also very very sweet. We got about two full size chocolate samples each on top of it. ***Fannie May Fine Chocolates reminded me (in quality and style) of Helen Grace; the chocolates, which included standard pieces like caramels, nuts and creams, were just okay and not as good as what you would find at See's*** I am not sure what Fannie May's reputation is, but I have definitely heard of it. This location is a pretty decent size shop (they sell chocolates as well as ice cream) and it is conveniently located next to the Chicago River where a lot of the tourist boats board. They had a standard assortment of dark and milk chocolates. A lot of the pieces were nuts, caramels and creams--nothing too creative...classical flavors. I tried a few pieces--some of their caramels as well as a pixie, which was kind of like a turtle (a mix of caramel and pecans). The chocolates were not too bad, but they definitely did not compare well to See's. The chocolate here lacked the smoothness, the creaminess and distinct flavors that many of See's chocolates possess. I felt the chocolates here (quality as well as selection) were more similar to Helen Grace (which has a few locations in the LA and OC area). Service was pleasant and quick. Prices were not outrageous, but they were probably about in the same range as See's (maybe a little more). The chocolates here were not awful and would probably be satisfying enough as a little sweet snack for a boat ride or a daily stroll. Still, I would imagine there are much better chocolate places in this area (especially if you know where to look). I am not sure what the parking situation is, but since this Fannie May is located in such a busy intersection, I would imagine parking is expensive and hard to find. read more

From the moment we started interacting with the staff, I was so disappointed. This Fannie May is in a great location and we just wanted to stop in and grab a couple of gifts to tote back to Indianapolis. I know this is a chain, which probably puts pretty tight restrictions on what the employees can and can't do for customers, but the accommodation was just not there. We were looking at their new 'designer chocolates' (beautiful) and we just wanted to put a small box together, but they were out of almost everything. When we settled on what was in stock, and asked to have a few four piece boxes put together, the girl behind the counter said they were out of that size of box. She told us that they only had two piece boxes and couldn't sell us a four piece set in two two piece boxes (what?). He immediately emailed them. No response. He waited 2 days and emailed them again. No response. They ruined my V-day gift and won't even respond to explain themselves. It is now 12 days later, and we still haven't heard from them. We will be charging back the charge. We gave them ample opportunity to make this right and they ignored us. We stopped in here since we kept walking by the store everyday and it's just around the corner from our hotel. You can't help but wonder, they must get a ton of jokes about their name and the similarities to "Fannie Mae," the government mortgage lender. Which came first? I'm too lazy to look it up. Since there all these See's comparisons, I fully expected to be offered a sample chocolate. Nada. So we walked around and grabbed a few of those individually wrapped truffles with the different flavors. I like the caramel and peanut butter flavors the best. Also, we got several of those Mint "Meltaways," which are larger brownie-sized things with creamy mint inside with an outside layer of chocolate. I'm not the biggest chocolate fan, but I thought that the chocolates were smooth and creamy, and not overly sweet. They also have other more sugary candies available, like gummi bears, if that floats your boat. The staff was friendly and helpful. This shop's interior was just fine before the company decided to close the location down for an interior refresh (perhaps something else was going on?) and it is now open again. I could not perceive any decorative improvement, but with that said the employees were as nice and polite as ever and since they never have any customers one is in and out as rapidly as he or she wishes. Can't get enough of Fannie May. My grandma used to work in the original Fannie May chocolate factory in Chicago, so I grew up with the stuff!!! It used to be a yummy Chicago original, but is no longer local. I don't think that the quality has suffered a bit, but the little treats are harder to find, so if you're not from Chicago, try online and if you are visiting, bring a box home to your friends, it's a Chicago treat!! I thought this choco-shop was gone forever (they closed virtually all shops a few years ago), but has been resurrected by 1-800 Flowers, the new owner. Anyway, the maple fudge is quite yummy, and I like the mint-meltaways. Service at the flagship store is quite good--friendly, but not overbearing. I dont see too much difference between Fannie May and See's. They're both chain candy stores that have a few really good candies, and a lot of standard tasting ones. I feel like Fannie Mae's ice cream is Chicago's best kept dessert secret. I also hypothesize it comes from cows with golden utters and sparkly hooves. Scoops are huge. RE: ONLINE ORDER AND SHIPPING EXPERIENCE I found this company on an internet search. I wanted to send someone special a birthday present and was delighted when their overnight price seemed so reasonable and their company had been in business since 1920. I've since learned they are well known. So I ordered the gourmet strawberry assortment on Monday, Jan. 21 to arrive on Friday for my friend's birthday, Jan. 25. On Thursday I received a notification the order had shipped; I was delighted - they were right on time. However, today is Saturday the 26th and I've heard nothing about the actual order delivery. When I looked at the email again it looked odd. The email showed it shipped Next Day FedEx on the 24th but indicated a UPS tracking number. I called a representative because I could not track any of the many numbers given on the email. Long story short, there were was a hiccup in the system and the package was not shipped. Ok...things happen but I was REALLY disappointed. However, to add insult to injury, it couldn't be shipped Monday and would would have to go Tuesday, arriving Wednesday, January 30th, 5 DAYS after my friend's birthday! Why? The rep (who was very kind BTW) didn't know but that was what the system was telling her and she could not override it. I was offered a refund or a reship. I chose to reship. I also told the rep something should be added for my trouble and disappointment. I will therefore be receiving a $15.00 gift card for my inconvenience. I really, really like their candy bars. So far I've tried almond, crispy rice, caramel and dark with cocoa, and none disappointed me. The milk chocolate has a silky texture and does not leave a bad aftertaste. The sweetness is well controlled so you won't get satiated easily. In order of preference I would go 1. Caramel 2. Crispy rice 3. Almond 4. Dark, but that's really just a personal thing. For $5 you can get four bars, not a bad deal at all. They also have a cute gourmet chocolate section, but I wasn't especially turned on, except the chocolate-coated citrus peel. One thing that I think they can improve is sampling.
