This is my first Yelp, so I thought I would give a shout out to Emma at Fantastic Sams in El Segundo. Emma is an Angel who is just the right kind of Sarcastic. She speaks just the right kind of truth which you cannot argue with when you are in her chair because the way she cuts your hair and the way she washes it afterward leaves you no doubt that you are in the best hands. Even if she is making a point you may not agree with, she keeps you enthralled until you are out the door...and while you may wonder what just happened, you realize two days later that this may have been the best haircut you ever had! Oh my goodness!!!! After coming back from a festival with dreads, knots, braids, a 1000 birds' nest and an insane amount of dust in my hair I walked in to see Krystel. This girl is so sweet and patiently removed every knot I had in my crazy Shakira hair without me saying ouch once! I went to Fabiola last night for a much needed haircut. I don't get my hair cut very often because I have had so many bad cuts in my life, I am a little gun-shy when it comes to getting it cut. I called at about 6:30 on Friday night to see if they had any availability. The receptionist said to come at 7:30 and I made an appt. A few minutes later, she called back and said Fabiola was ready now so I could come early if I like. I had a few pictures of a short bob that I wanted and showed them to Fabiola when I arrived. She confirmed how long and how stacked I wanted it in the back and got to work. Aaaahhhmazing scalp massage while washing my hair almost put me to sleep! You can always tell when a hairstylist knows what they are doing when they bring out the razor...or at least you hope they do. Lol! I could tell that she was doing a good job the whole way through. So, you know in the movies, when they turn the chair around and the angels sing and glitter falls from the sky because the girl is so beautiful? Yep - that was me last night. I can not ever remember a time when I have gotten a haircut that my jaw fell open because I was shocked at how good I looked. I have been getting my haircut here for the last 14 years, literally. The quality of the cut is enough for me to keep the 14 year streak going, but it's much more than the haircut. The reason this place is so special is because of the love that you feel when you're there. And nobody brings the love like Gail does! Sitting in Gail's chair is one of my favorite monthly experiences. She is as real as people come, and that is uncommon, and appreciated. If you're a football junkie, you'll be able to have knowledgeable and funny conversations. Most of all the conversations are just about life, and most include some funny stuff. This place is VERY VERY close to 5-stars. The ONLY REASON it doesn't get 5-stars is because it is impossible to get a perfect haircut everytime. There have been times when I leave 100% satisfied with my cut, and then there are times when it just doesn't seem the cut is as good as the cut I got the previous time. With that being said... Yes. I am picky. I have no complaints with this establishment. It is beautiful! Very clean! Friendly staff! The complimentary small bottle of water is a nice gesture and is always cold! I not only like but I value the haircut rewards program. Get 9 cuts and your 10th is free! There seems to be some magic in their shampoo and conditioner. When they wash my hair, it is silky, smoothe, soft and moisturized! I can't seem to get that on my own, ever! About a year ago, I decided to give this location a try because it was closer to my home. I had my hair cut by 2 people before Collin cut my hair. NOBODY compares to Collin. He has cut my hair at least 10 times and all have been on the + side of my pickiness meter. I always make an appointment with him so he doesn't have to rush, and the job gets done even better. I am afraid to post this because others will learn of the true hair master known as Collin. But he deserves the praise. He is "fantastic" at what he does! I am glad I discovered this place. The price isn't bad at all. Search and you will find coupons to make the price an even better value. The kids have been there a few times with no issue, but I was pretty bothered by the last experience. My 11 year spends literally 4 or 5 minutes getting her haircut, and they charge her the adult price of $18, plus another $4 or $5 because her hair was long (just below the shoulders)? So lets see, about $22 for a five minute trim, and no wash/rinse or blow dry? Everyone over 10 years old is considered an adult? Extra cost for hair beyond the shoulders?... nice gouge job! When I went in after and asked what's up with charging the extra for long hair, especially when it only took a total of 5 minutes, they just pointed to the fine print on their brochure. OK, so maybe I don't fully appreciate the complexities of cutting longer hair, but if it takes no additional time to do the job, how complicated could it be? Here are the highlights of my hair cut visit last month: 1. Walk in at 2pm and there's 4 employees working. I am told the older gentleman is the best barber for men. They say he's been cutting hair for 14 years. 2. I sit down and show the barber a picture of myself with my ideal haircut. 3. He starts cutting it and i tell him the fade is a bit high. He says no, and then goes a little higher............................. 4. Two other employees walk over and tell him he messed up my hair by going too high. 5. Another employee starts talking to me on how they aren't really a barber shop and don't really cut regular hair (i guess they just color and style??)... (why didnt they say that before i sat down??)..... (WTF??) 6. All the employees are looking at me and giving advice to my barber on how to fix my hair cut. He gets upset and starts cutting faster and a bit all over the place. I start to give him advice and he gets more upset. 7. I feel like I'm at a beauty college but maybe even worse. 8. My hair looks like shit and beyond fixing. He says he's done. 9. I leave with the ugliest hair cut I've ever received in my life. DON'T GO HERE read more

I've been coming to this Location for over 5 years and they have had amazing hairstylists come and go unfortunately but this review is specifically about my encounter with this business today. The staff this morning was very very unorganized. I took my kids for a haircut and I was just shocked at how the caliber of work has just definitely declined. I always go to DIANA and made the biggest mistake of my life going outside of her shift. Diana is amazing and today proved to me that no all hairstylists are created equal. Well, I came to this salon wide eyed and unsure of the future of my hair. I dipped my toe in the pond of endless hair possibilities with my stylist Emma and what she crafted was Michael Angelo level beautiful. My roots have never been so healthy, the ends of my hair were perfectly tapered. Did you know that you are only supposed to put styling product on the ends of your hair? I didn't!! The first time I came here was great, but the second time was not so fantastic. I had the same lady both times so I don't know what's going on. This last time she seemed in a hurry, even though I was the only one waiting and I got seated in 10 minutes. I don't mind getting in and out so I can spend my day somewhere besides a hair cutting place, but when you go so fast that the sideburns are not even close to the same length and the short one is cut at some ridiculous angle I'm thinking you should slow down a hair (rim shot!). I'm not overly picky when it comes to haircuts, it does grow out after all, but with a 50% success rate I don't think I'll be stopping in anytime soon. read more

I followed her all the way from Westchester to El Segundo because she would give me great customer service and on top of that if you're someone who loves to get your haircut and chat then she is your woman! I've been here twice so far. The first time was fine, but nothing special with the haircut for the price. The second time was today and I am never going back. I called 20 min ahead of time (which guaranteed is not a long period) and they told me to come on in. No mention of a wait time. I arrived and shared my information, which afterwards I was told to take a seat and that they would be with me in a minute. After 40 minutes of waiting around, I had completely wasted my lunch break with no one coming to get me for a simple haircut. Absolutely unbelievable. At least tell me if you are busy and that there will be a wait longer than 5 min. Never going back to this place. read more

Firstly, I would like to start off by saying that Mindo was great; provided great customer service and did a very nice job with my hair. However, the other two ladies never spoke or smiled. Additionally, as soon as Mindo was finished with my trim one "Ms. Personality" (with the glasses) rushed over to the cashier and told her how much my trim would be. I was charged $22 for a trim (which is standard) and then charged an $8 "extra length" fee. I think that is a little excessive. However, the money is really not the issue; it was the whole vibe of that establishment. If it weren't for Mindo they would have received a 1 star review. I was very pleasantly surprised to get such a professional and beautiful cut and color from a local/chain style salon but wow! My boyfriend and I both got cuts and we're both happy! Tania was excellent and patient and helped me feel comfortable while choosing the right cut and color for me, and she checked in several times to make sure before starting because it was such a drastic change! I have to say that even though I had a fabulous tv makeover earlier this year, the reactions to my new cut and color were so much more frequent than that one, and I feel like I can have more fun and manage styling than that previous experience! I plan on going back to Tania every time that's for sure, but I could tell that there were several qualified stylists there!! read more

I knew I had no business walking into Fantastic Sams with my naturally curly hair, but I had gone to Supercuts MANY times in the past and even to this very Fantastic Sams once before. I only go this route when I want my ends trimmed as I feel that there's no real "risk" in that. The first time, probably six months to a year ago, I had a good stylist, a Latina woman who says that her hair is naturally curly but that she wears it straightened out. She competently cut my hair and I walked out with a nice style. I tried it again last week. Oops. As soon as I saw the look on the stylist's face, I knew that she was stumped. That was my cue to say, "Um, nevermind. I'll wait for someone else." Instead, I figured, "I just want my ends trimmed. That can't be too hard." Mind you... I've been trying to let my hair grow for a while now, and I thought that trimming the ends would alleviate the breakage. So here I am with Ms. Sasha Michelle. Who, again, appears to be stumped by the curly tresses before her. When she asked, "What shape do you want your hair to be?" I answered, "I JUST want the ends trimmed." So... long story long, she trimmed the ends on the sides and back, and whacked the top. Can you say... "m u l l e t ??" ARGH! Good thing that I have years of experience cutting my own hair (um, I do, but it's not that good). I was able to "reshape" my hair (every day for about four days, I was cutting it to fix it), but it's now SIGNIFICANTLY shorter than it was. But... hair grows. That was the risk I was willing to take when I walked in. Three stars because my first experience was actually good. Maybe I should give MYSELF one star for not backing out when I had the chance! read more

Got my haircut here. Gail cut the hair for me. She is excellent and fantastic on haircut. An awesome hair stylist. I got a stylish and pretty haircut. Gail has worked as a hair stylist for a long time. She cut hair quickly. And in a short time, one can get a wonderful haircut. This is one of the best hair salons I have tried in this region. I always receive great service from Yolanda. I met her at a different salon. Thank goodness we had each other's number and we reconnected. Yolanda "fixed" my hair after having my hair bleached at a privately owned salon. It's back to being blue/black and healthy. I don't know what she did but after the first coloring, my hair has been the softest in months. Yolanda is super nice and greets you like family. Always a warm welcome and a hug. I've been here a good 3 or 4 times so far, pretty much entirely out of convenience. The people here are decent. Nice and fast, pretty good at following directions. Not the steadiest hands. Carry on some small talk. All of the normal things. My only complaint is they *only* follow directions. Don't expect to walk in and ask for a business or work-appropriate cut, a low maintenance cool cut, or anything else subjective. You'll just be stared at and asked for a length in inches or clipper setting. Makes it hard on people like me who don't know a thing about hair! That's all to be expected from a place like this though. The real problem is that I've never got a perfectly executed cut. Sideburns have been uneven, my neckline was ridiculously high once, had patches of hair that missed being cut. Nothing major like a flat top when I wanted a buzz, but it's always been something noticeable. read more

I want to thank Mona for taking ownership today of the past bad cut my son experienced. I was there on Tuesday evening and Diana seemed hurried while she cut my hair. She was attending to the front desk, answering a call here and there and cutting my sons hair. If it had been my hair, I would have been bothered but it was my 9 year old son. I figured "how can you mess up a kids cut". We walked out after the cut and his hair was wet and had gel on so It wasn't obvious till the next day. Omg! What a surprise once his hair was dry. I wasn't able to come back till today, 4 days later. So I walked in today and was met by Mona, who listened to me, understood my frustration and took a look at my sons cut and agreed. She sat him down, cut his hair and made sure we were both happy. No charge for the redo plus she offered him a free follow up cut in 2 weeks! I realize that things don't always go the way you want them to "all the time". But this was a pleasure being taken care of the way we were today. Thanks Mona! Personally, I come to see Yoli as my personal stylist, (as she's nothing short of remarkable), yet if she's busy, which due to her being is such high demand can happen, or if our schedules don't align, (as I come in quite often), I know, with full confidence, that I can count on any of the other stylists to step in to handle the task. I'm only giving one star because they completely ripped off my friend who accompanied me there for a wash/dry. She decided to also get a blowout because the place was empty. While washing her hair, Fabiola recommended a conditioner treatment which my friend agreed to without asking the price, naively thinking it would be an extra $3-4 because it took less than a minute. What a surprise at checkout when they charged her $35 dollars more! When we asked them to justify that, they pointed to the price menu for 'spa treatment'. What a rip off. You might expect to pay that in LA where you get a legitimate treatment that may take 20-30 minutes. Buyer Beware and make sure you question in advance any service they offer! read more

I was in dire need of a trim, and was admonished for wanting to get my hair cut "after Chinese New Year's" so I decided to stop in before the weekend. Having changed jobs meant having to figure out where I could rush into after work to get my hair cut. The mixed bag of reviews were intimidating, but after calling the Powder Room on Main 7 times not wanting to leave a message I figured I'd suck it up and take my chances here. I was helped right when I got in, and was asked if I wanted my hair washed? I thought all salons did this? Anyway, Stefani was great. We discussed and went with the razor, which I'm no stranger to and not scared of. She whisked away layer after layer and was just the right amount of talkative for me. She did everything just as I asked, long layers, slight bangs and thinned out. When she was done, to my surprise they were having a special and all haircuts were only $12!! That is a BARGAIN for a girl like me with long, thick hair (and I do mean THICK, like when they're done the floor looks like you just shaved a dog). I have been to other salons that charge 10x this price and do not do as good a job. I actually paid in cash, which I haven't been able to do after a haircut probably EVER, and I didn't have to "fix" anything when I got home. They're not going to do any fancy balayage or anything super fancy, but they did a good job for a great price. read more
