This is my new favorite place to grab refreshing ice cream, but the service definitely can be a bit slow and unorganized once a line starts to form. While standing in line I noticed two employees made a duplicate order for a customer. Not a big deal, but that's when I should've tried my ice cream before leaving the store and driving away. I ordered a vanilla mango with sprinkles/coconut flakes on a cone which I've gotten numerous times. What I got was unknown. It was a pale pink/greyish color and different texture like a blend of two flavors with the toppings I've asked for. It didn't taste awful, but not what I was excited for. Especially after paying nearly $9. Definitely give this place a try but just remember to double check your order before leaving when it's busy. read more

This ice cream shop exceeded my expectations. I loved the concept of mixing in fresh fruit in with the ice cream to create a smoothie like taste with soft serve texture. I found the portions to be perfectly sized, I often find that ice cream shops give out more than I want to eat but not this place. One of my favorite ice cream spots in the city. The ice cream here is creamy and not overly sweet- and it feels like I'm eating something healthy since they mix fruit into it! I'd recommend the chocolate ice cream base mixed with raspberry and strawberry. Skip the graham cracker topping as it's only a tiny dusting and it crumbles off the ice cream very easily (half of it ended up on the table). My only real complaint is the sizing. I ordered a regular ($6) and my friend ordered a kiddie ($5) and hers was just as big if not bigger than mine. read more

The ice cream is like a thicker soft-serve which I really enjoyed. I got the raspberry chocolate sundae one and I thought it had good flavor and wasn't too sweet. They were so welcoming right as we walked into the store-everyone greeted us and they were more than happy to walk us through and give us the spiel on their icecream. We live in the neighborhood and was very excited about the arrival of Far Out ice cream. We were very disappointed for the following reasons: - apparently they have not figured out the logistics of serving more than 2 people every 15 minutes - the process of making the ice cream is slow at best -the ice cream was ok but the fruit was FROZEN when mixed in. This is like tasting little bits of ice in your ice cream. We had pineapple and strawberry separately and we couldn't tell the difference! This is a game-ender. If you can't taste the fruit in a fruit ice cream what is the point? -half of the ice cream was not properly mixed in so it was like half vanilla and half l fruit mix -portion was extremely small as mentioned by other reviewers I hope they can fix the problems. Very disappointed and felt really singled out by the experience especially given how many people were still in line for ice cream. They should really change their closing time. The prices were ridiculous- I ordered a regular size ice cream for $6 which would be ok but the serving was made with only one tiny scoop of ice cream, calling it a kiddie size would be generous. I expected that for the premium prices, this ice cream would be really delicious but it was kind of icy and not super flavorful. The machines that they use are really cool but also create a giant bottleneck in serving customers- there were only 3 customers in front of me and it still took 15 minutes to be served. This is the first time I've seen specialty New Zealand ice cream and it's a cool concept. They took dairy or non-dairy hard vanilla or chocolate and then blend in soft serve all natural fruit flavors to create a soft serve blend. You can combine any of the fruit flavors and as many as you would like to have a truly unique concoction but I would caution to pick your flavor combos carefully. Being new to the process, we went a bit crazy and got the special sugar plum seasonal flavor along with one that combined a bunch of berries (raspberry, strawberry, blueberry and blackberry) and while it had a very nice refreshing fruity taste it was a bit much and the flavors blended together. I like the concept though and think next time I'll go with something more citrus based (like pineapple orange to mirror an ice cream flavor I love). The portions were huge and we had trouble finishing our shared scoop. You can also get it in a cone. Price-wise it's on bar with some of the higher end ice cream stands. Quality was very good and line went fast. Definitely something to check out if you've never had it before. read more

When this place is good, it's really good. The problem is the inconsistency. I've been here several times and ordered the same thing (except varying sizes) and each have been very different which is disappointing when you're spending $6-$7+ on an ice cream. Once when I ordered a kiddie it was as big as if not bigger than the regular (this is not a problem until you order a regular and don't get more than you would with a kiddie). Twice I ordered chocolate flakes, one time they came on top (which really isn't 0.75 cents worth because most of them fall off when the server hands it to you) another time it came without the topping and when I asked, the server said they were mixed in to the ice cream. When I brought my boyfriend we both ordered the exact same thing: vanilla with kookaberry. They were made by two different servers. Mine was a dark purple color with a strong berry flavor. His was a very light purple that tasted like vanilla with a hint of berry. My ice cream tasted great, but for this price it's disappointing when nothing is consistent and you aren't sure what you're going to get. read more

I've been to Far Out a handful of times already and I've always had a great experience. Sometimes the service has been a bit slow, but thats because they're super popular and they often have a line out the door! The staff always works hard/quickly while being friendly and calm. I'm very grateful they took my peach allergy seriously and handled it with ease/patience - the woman taking my order communicated the need to prevent cross-contamination to her co-worker, who then took great care to make sure I was safe (even though it was really busy at the time and there was a long line). The ice cream is delicious and different, and the prices are great! I will definitely be back and recommend this business to anyone in Coolidge Corner. read more
