Their menu is either hit or miss. I'm sure their seafood is decent because I saw many tables ordering large displays of fancy shellfish. We ordered some of our go-to choices when we are at a new chinese restaurant such as the Peking pork chop and a stir fried vegetable (snow pea leaves). They were both great in taste and portion size. The lobster was also good, although you'd have to order at least 2 lobsters because they were pretty small. We also got a cumin lamb dish and it was the worst I have ever had. I'd steer away from all of their lamb and other non regional dishes. Overall, this is a pretty decent spot that often gets packed. I would still have to experiment with their menu to distinguish the good from the bad. One thing I'm sure of is to avoid the lamb. read more

I can see why this restaurant is intimidating to new customers, the place is loud there is always a long wait time and how do you know what to get with so much to choose from? Farmers is the place I go for an authentic taste of Hong Kong/ canto cuisine. Squabs, lobster fried rice, shrimp balls with Mayo, king crabs. These are just some of the items I always get when I go to farmers. The food is hot, fresh and delicious. Pricing is reasonable and the chef is amazing. I always ask what is good today, and the waiter will be able to distinguish for you what is fresh and what they recommend. They NEVER disappoint. read more

Ridiculous service. I ordered a congee over the phone for pick up at 11:43am The woman told me 25 minutes. I checked in 20 mins later, they told me not yet. That's fine I guess. I check in again 40 mins after my call..."almost" An hour later I ask again and they finally tell me it's just about done. They slap it all together and take my money. This 4 star review is for the food. It was absolutely delicious and fresh. We tried the clams, Cantonese lobster, fish with eggs and chives, Peking pork chop and the steak, chicken fried rice, and pea shoots. The service how ever was only 2 star hence the 3 star average. Not only were they not attentive, they did not offer rice or water. Our food came out in 3 waves for a table of 12. We ordered 8 dishes. It was 4 dishes which we finished by the time they served is white rice, then 3 more dishes which we finished before the last and final dish arrived at the point we were ready to leave if it had not been served. Even after several complaints that we were still missing food when our first four dishes had been devoured. The redemption made by the waitstaff was to give us plates to serve our cake (which we brought). Tiny tiny place. Be prepared to be squished inside but it's worth it. Let's face it. The small, dirty, noisy places almost always have the best food and most authentic. It explains why they are always packed to the core. The food was fresh and fragrant. 100% loved the food. I rarely eat clams because I find them fishy as heck but it was pretty nice here. Even my husband who normally stays away from seafood had a couple. Best of all, there is free dessert at the end! It is not the typical tong sui but instead a type of coconut jelly. I would have enjoyed it even more without the beans. We did not have a poor experience with service either. The staff was quick and on top of our orders. I was struggling to find a place to take my mom for mother's day dinner because my mom is typically really picky with what she likes to eat. I asked my best friend "Where should I bring a picky asian mom for mother's day dinner?" She ended up suggesting Farmers, because her mom also is picky and she really enjoyed her meal here last time. I was weary because of the mixed reviews, but as it came highly recommended by my friend, I decided to make a "reservation" here for the Friday before mother's day. I'm confused with the mixed reviews because all that is detailed below is typical of an authentic cantonese restaurant (crass service, long wait, reservations not honored...) I tried to call to make a reservation and the person on the phone tried to sweet talk me into not making one???? He basically told me to call ahead, which is different than a reservation. I told him either way, I am arriving at 6:30pm, because I get out of work at a certain time and that even if I have to wait, that's fine. It was just a weird conversation. Obviously, when I arrived at 6:30pm, we had to wait a bit. It's a tiny space in general, and given how fast they turnover the tables, you would be silly to think that they wouldn't try to squeeze another table prior to your reservation. That is to be expected. If you look past all of that, you will find: 1) Great food. Their lobster sticky rice is clearly the standout dish. I could eat it all day and would come back just for this dish. 2) Reasonable prices. Their lobster sticky rice is ~$30 which is really reasonable. There was more lobster than rice, which could be bad or good because the rice was sooo good. 3) Standard service. The service wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. It's probably above standard for authentic cantonese restaurant. I would definitely return, if not only for the lobster fried rice. The fish dish was really costly, but that was our fault. We accepted a 2lb fish for a table of 4, which was more than we should eat. Other than that, everything was really good price and the food was good. Lastly, my super picky mother really approved of this place and is already talking about the the next time she comes back. As far as chinese restaurants go... this is a 4 star from me. read more

Really good lunch specials on 86th Street with a good portion size! $7.25 for an entree with soup and rice or $5ish for dish over rice! Lobsters were $9.99 each and can be cooked in scallion ginger, fried with garlic, or steam. I really enjoyed the eggplant salted fish because it was flavorful and the salted fish was not too overly powering the eggplant. The fried pork chop was a bit too fatty. The lobster was a bit over fried but I would definitely try scallion ginger style next time. We went there around dinner time and was seated promptly. It wasn't a huge restaurant but there were a lot of people already. We ordered watercress soup, steamed oysters, lobster with garlic and scallion, soy sauce fried noodles with squid and baby fish, and string beans with black bean sauce, mushroom and minced pork. Our food came out in a reasonable time. The soup was a disappointment because it had a strong gamy odor. However, the other dishes were delicious! The service provided wasn't that good as they were pushy and in a rush when we were ordering. This is kinda expected from a Chinese restaurant. This one is basically the same review as mine for Kings Rice at 656 18th Ave: the most solid Cantonese/Yue cuisine with the freshness, speediness, and right flavor balances you typically dream of. Location is extremely convenient in near-central Bensonhurst on the B1 bus from Bay Ridge or any n-s route (B7/82 along Bay Pkwy), 2 blocks from the JMart. Parking's usual street-only. Frontage is clear and brightly signed with non-obstructed sightlines. Interior design is typical spartan as all competitors within the few blocks are. Come for the food, stay for the food. Some reviews cite rude, curt, or dismissive service, but speaking Canto with the right cadence and tone is the key to getting the service. I speak Mandarin which they'll accept though that's not quite great so I use a courteous patient tone and it all works out, even for me. This rating is purely for the food - the fresh seafood! The lobster and sticky rice is a bargain here (at time of writing) and the Alaskan king crab was amazing last time for a celebration dinner. The chefs here know how to cook Cantonese food and their woks have fire power- "wok hay" as our parents would say. Explains the wait on evenings. However if you expect nice decor, friendly waiters and lots of space, don't come here lol. There are a few waiters working in a small busy place. The restroom may extinguish your appetite. And last time we brought wine... some of their wine glasses were coated in oil and we were pretty grossed out. Dined in here on Wednesday at 6 pm. Let's just say that this place gets pack fast. The restaurant is small. It has about 3 big tables and 4 small tables. Highly recommend you to come early so you don't have to wait for a table. You can also call the restaurant to reserve a table in advance. Anyway, the foods were good. I liked how the lobster fried rice was crunchy. The big oyster was juicy! The spicy frog legs was great but there wasn't enough frog for the price. There were way too many bell peppers so it made the dish looked big but it wasn't. The boil razor clams were decent but way too many bean sprout and not enough razor clams. Beware, if you want to order take out, place it way in advance. They stop picking up the phone when they have too many take out order. My mother and I stumbled upon this restaurant and decided to go in because the food and prices for the lunch special looked decent and we were both de-hydrated. We were seated promptly and given ice water and hot tea. We placed our orders and the soup was given within minutes. After 5-10 minutes, a couple came and shared the table my mother and I. We ordered two non-seafood dishes (fried tofu and fish cake) so the waiting time should not have been long. However, we waited for our food for over 30 MINUTES. There was no acknowledgement from the staff in regards to our food and the couple that came in after my mother and I got their food first (and it was lobster fried rice/sticky rice). My mother and I got up to leave but right when we were about to step out the door, a waiter comes holding 3 plates and says our food has arrived. So we sat back down to find out that only 1 of the plates was for our table AND IT WASN'T WHAT WE ORDERED, it was for the other couple at the table. Their service is absolutely horrendous. I came here to eat for the first time today and I loved it so much that I thought I'd just be their first yelp review. I'm pretty sure they might not even know what yelp is but that's besides the point. When you first enter, the atmosphere might seem a little lackluster. Unlike the typical Chinese restaurants that are be riddled with colorful posters with their specials of the day (or everyday), the painted white walls are just that-- painted white. However, after a minute and a greeting, it's not so bad. This leads me to the service. The kind waitresses and the many customers make it pretty cozy. The younger waitress was super nice and patient while my family and I were deciding what to eat (we took awhile). The older waitress kept coming around to make sure everything was all right (to all the tables, not just ours). Our ice water and our hot tea pot would never hit empty because of how attentive both of the waitresses were. And now comes the food. The food was pretty worth its price. My family and I ordered a veggie plate, a plate w. razor clams, a lobster (w sticky rice), squid w pickled veggies, and some type of beef cube dish (this was sooo yummy and my brother who does NOT eat mushrooms ate. it. uppppppp!). The only plate that we didn't finish was the squid w. pickled veggies (but then again, that was because that's my favorite dish and I eat a majority of it). This was the only dish that I thought could be better but it's because I prefer my pickled veggies to be a bit more sweet rather than just "sour" + "salty".. still very edible though! =D ALLLL the plates were filled to the brim! I was order a take out (no a big order) before to take a hair cut, after I gone with the hair cut, went to the restaurant asked for my order, they told me there is a big order come in, they have to take care of it, I said when I order there is no order, why take so long to make my order? I went to Farmer's on recommendation from my neighbors, cheap and well cooked lobsters for $8.00. So we went today to try them. We walked in at 2:30 and were greeted by two grumpy wait people. We ordered one lobster for the two of us, but instead of the usual garlic and ginger for $9.99, we had the Cantonese style with minced pork, egg and black bean for $2.00 more. We also ordered a large lunch dish of fish filet and string bean with black bean. Both dishes were delicious and tasty. More than enough food for we two. I noticed that they were heavy handed with the MSG though. We will definitely go back to try their other dishes. I recommend trying. read more

First impression of the place: not that great. when my family and i sat down, the dishes and the eating utensils were not clean properly, my cup had a shrimp shell in it. we had to clean everything ourselves. The servers were inattentive and were incredibly rude. we were forced to pay a certain amount of tip, and when we didn't ($2 less than the given tip) they came after us telling we didn't pay enough. Be ready for your typical traditional, loud and crowded Chinese restaurant. However, all Asians know you're in the right spot when you see big tables with families sitting in a circle talking and laughing loudly with a whole bunch of food in the center. I would definitely recommend the Alaskan king crab. A little pricey but it's definitely worth it. One crab cooked three ways. The head was cooked with sticky fried rice, the legs were were garlic over vermicelli, and the body was a salt pepper style. All very delicious. My favorite was the legs over vermicelli noodles, the noodles soaked up the fresh garlic seafood flavor of the crab legs. It is a bit grungy, a bit hole in the wall, but the food here is pretty good and the service is adequate. This place does fill up quick; our table was already reserved for customers coming in directly behind us for dinner at 8pm. One of the better Chinese places in the area to hold a family dinner.
