I've come here a few more times since my last post -- because obviously, it's my family's favourite, and it continues to be. It's a touch of home-cooked Hoisan food with just the right amount of salt. I've even brought other Cantonese people here, and they were impressed by the quality, the speed, and the variety of dishes -- their honey glazed beef short ribs were a dish they'd never heard of, but was now on their list of go-tos. On my most recent visit, I ordered 4 entree dishes to go for my house party -- the 2 beef chow funs, a Singaporean rice noodle, and Yangzhou fried rice. They were all a hit despite there being dumplings at the party, and not a single crumb went to waste. I can't wait to come back once again. read more

I came here for an early dinner on a Friday night with my family. We ordered the jellyfish and ham, the string beans with minced pork, and the seafood pan fried noodles. The jellyfish and ham was okay but I've never been a fan of jellyfish or ham (I don't like squishy food haha). The string beans were a bit too greasy for me but I liked the preserved mustard stems (zhacai) since that was different. The seafood (fish, shrimp, squid) in the seafood pan fried noodles didn't seem that fresh. The pan fried noodles were crispy though. Service was okay, pretty attentive but we were pretty much the only table there. It was decent but I feel like there's better Cantonese restaurants in the area. read more

Dinner with my family two weeks ago, my sister-in-law recommended this place, she likes to try new restaurants in her neighborhood. It was a cold rainy mid-week night, it might be the reason people did in the area did. ot wsnt tondine out. The restaurant had a Chinese written only menu featured the chef's specialties, and a regular menu, but I saw many of the dishes were Taisan cuisines. It was 5pm on a Friday. I called the day before to confirm it's hours as their posted hours were confusing at best. After the 2nd call (first time I spoke English which he didn't have patience for), he confirmed 10pm closing in Cantonese. Sketch, but I wanted to believe the other 5 star reviews I'm reading. Yes, it is indeed a "real" Chinese restaurant. Staff can be rude if you aren't accompanied by someone Chinese in your party. Nonetheless, the waitstaff was somewhat nice and patient with my mother's incessant questions. Water was refilled proactively and our noodles were plated personally for the first round like a Chinese banquet. Environment - its like a cross between a Chinese banquet style and a take out joint. The table clothes are stained like the grout in the bathroom. Technically cleaned, but you know - stained. Few chips in the porcelain. Food is where it suffered. My mother said the "ham" that accompanied the jelly fish dish didn't taste fresh. The seafood in the pan fried noodle also had that raw chicken taste. It's located at store away from the corner of 8th Avenue and 58th street. The staff is very kind and welcoming and enjoy taking the time to talk to guests to make sure everything is great. There are lunch options 11-4 and it comes with complimentary soup. I have been visiting Restaurant on 58 St for years, mainly for family gatherings. My favorite side is ging doh gwut which is pork chop w. peaking sauce on the menu. You could also ask for the sauce on the side as well if you don't like you pork chops drenched in sauce. I also really like the chow mei fun (Singaporean Style Spicy). The spicy flavor is very light and the noodles are well salted. They've slightly increased the prices over the years, but it's still an affordable place to get a delicious meal around 8th avenue. tl;dr - affordable and delicious. Brooklyn Chinatown's inventory of Cantonese establishments has taken a hit over the years, more so due to the rise of Central Chinese and Fukinese spots across the avenues. Minus a few Dim Sum spots, the Canto options have been sparse. Enter Sing Kee (勝記小館), formally Ming Wang (#1) of yesteryear and now coined as literally: Restaurant on 58th St. Kudos to the originality of the name aside, this place has something else going for them: rock solid Cantonese cuisine. The interior is reminiscent of Sing Kee in Manhattan (#2), with a semi-narrow layout cramped with number of group friendly tables. It isn't grand like some of the Dim Sum banquet halls, but for the grit of the area and the lack of high end eateries, this place fits right in. The food certainly speaks for itself. And speaking of the food, I've been fortunate to like just about everything I've had. Their version of scrambled egg with shrimp (蝦仁炒蛋) tastes like the homemade classic that it is while the beef with asparagus (牛腩蘆筍) is both hearty and delicious. Their version of the peking pork chop (京獨派股) is on the sweeter side, but the meat is very tender. Their variety of seafood (be it lobster, crab, or fish) is also worthy of consideration and their house special "golden" fried rice (金王鮮炒飯) will likely make any fried rice lover happy. Another thing I appreciate is the fact they're open late. For reasons that are no fault of theirs, I'm more or less always too far away to appreciate them at normal hours (unless if it's during the hectic weekends where both parking and crowds are issues) and the fact they're always consistent with their food. The service has been equally solid and the prices are super fair for this part of town. I appreciate them taking a gamble on this location, which may not get as much visibility as places along 7th or 8th avenues and the fact the street itself is extremely taboo in Chinese (notably Cantonese) superstition. Despite our waitor telling us the food would take some time to make since the chefs are taking lunch break, my husband and I decided to wait anyway. Why would you tell a customer that? You don't see alot of authentic Cantonese restaurants around the neighborhood anymore, but when you do, it's hidden on a side street right off 8th Avenue. Anyhow, we made it in time for their lunch special (ends 3PM) and ordered 3 dishes. Says it comes with a bowl of house soup and rice, did not get the soup but was offered unlimited rice, though I could only eat so much. For the huge portions, it is well worth $5.50 a plate. Small Chinese restaurant that serves Cantonese dishes and plenty of seafood near 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. Behind the storefront with an unordinary name is a small, tidy restaurant with delicious food. There aren't a lot of tables, but the tables are big and can accommodate groups of around 10. In the back is the kitchen and a few tanks with fish and crabs. Location/Parking: The restaurant is a few stores down from the more bustling 8th Avenue on 58th Street, so don't panic if you can't find the restaurant off the main thoroughfare. If you walk towards 7th Avenue, it'll be on the right side. Find street parking in the neighborhood. Ordering Experience: There's a Chinese and an English menu to order from. Wait time to get food after ordering is on par with similar Chinese restaurants. What I Tried: Beef Chow Haw Fun - This stir fried beef and rice noodle dish is a 4 star dish in my opinion. Beef could be more tender. Noodles taste as I'd expect. Stir Fried Vegetables - The vegetables were cooked with a large amount of stir fried garlic, which I appreciated. They were moderately oily and not too salty. Braised Oxtail - Apparently this is one of the restaurant's specialties. If you order this dish, it will take a while for it to come out. The meat was cooked satisfactorily - tender and went well with the sauce. Lotus root served in the dish also absorbed the sauce and was delicious. Salt and Pepper Squid - I really liked this dish. The squid pieces are big and they're very lightly breaded - less than I've had at other restaurants. As a result, the squid has good flavor and isn't overwhelmingly salty. Grab a bite with a sliced jalapeño pepper if you want to add some heat. Sauteed Grouper Filet "Country Style" - This was my favorite dish of the meal. The dish consists of soft, well seasoned, tender chunks of grouper (white fish) topped off with ground pork and finely cut string beans. I thought the dish had a lot of flavor. Although it was a bit greasy, I would definitely order it again. Verdict: Order the salt and pepper squid and the sautéed grouper if you like seafood. The other dishes I tried weren't bad either. The braised oxtail is worth trying if you're ordering it alongside other dishes, but I wouldn't order it individually when considering the added wait. read more

When you're craving Cantonese food, this place has you covered with quick service and late hours into the early morning. The food has that right level of expected delicious oiliness to give the sense of good "wok hay" The prices are affordable and food was tasty. My gut tells me that this is Lucky Eight's spinoff but my heart tells me that this is its sister. The layout of this place is so similar, it's scary. Many would pass by this place and not spare a glance but who am I kidding, it's so low-key. I came here for a family dinner and I was not disappointed like I thought I would be. The food is surprisingly good and cooked and prepared differently. One of the dishes I really liked was the jumbo shrimps with mayo. The shrimps were more deep fried than usual and instead of broccoli, they use fresh fruits as alternatives, like melons and dragon fruit. I also really liked one of the fried rice we had, which had raisins and had a balance with some saltiness to it. The Hong Kong-style lobster was also delicious. Open late! That's a big bonus. This place makes the best general tso chicken and rice. Fried or white are both good choices. The chicken is clean and white meat, made with ginger flavor and fresh. The restaurant has a few big round tables and usually packed even late at night. Thumbs up for this restaurant. I'll be trying some of their other dishes soon. Authentic Cantonese/Taishanese food that is very delicious. One of the last restaurants of its kind in the area. Reasonable prices for delicious food and attentive service. Highly recommend. The style of food can range from rice combo dishes to banquet style ones. Before the pandemic, they were packed with a wait required for dinner service on most nights. Now the restaurant is mostly empty but with an active stream of takeout flowing out the door. The food is very good which is what helped them survive and thrive through these hard times. read more

Whenever I come, we typically order the same few dishes: fish maw soup, beef and bittermelon, sauteed string beans, the works. Like most great Cantonese restaurants, the menu never ends. The portions here are generous and everything is tasty, but what gets me really excited is the salted fish, chicken, and eggplant. Just give me a whole bowl of that and I'll be set. With most Cantonese restaurants, you can expect to end the meal with some fresh fruit, usually orange slices, and some kind of dessert soup. This is the perfect place to bring your traditional parents or friends after a late night out. This place is a really good place to get authentic and delicious Canto foods for its price. I'd say they're even better than some bigger and fancier "jou lou" (酒樓) with a lower price. This place is outstanding! We came upon this restaurant starving after a late gig, wanting some good authentic Chinese food other than diner grub. First, We were grateful there was a Chinese place that was open until 4-you need to be seated by 3 am. We walked in around 2 am and sat towards the back as there was a table full of gentlemen who appeared to be regulars eating and smoking in front. The place was well lit and clean; the china was notably VERY clean, and there was a nice classy touch of black matte chopsticks. The waiters were friendly and attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious. The menu offered a good variety of dishes in Chinese and English. This place is definitely a place that is frequented by people "in the know", and by that I mean despite the hilarious name of the place--the food is fantastic. As a connoisseur of authentic Chinese Food, I can say this place gets two thumbs up. We ordered two dishes (portions were hearty!), and both were superb. The chicken with black bean sauce (the dish is normally prepared with bone in chicken, but they were kind enough to ask us if we preferred boneless breast meat which we opted for) was delicious--the flavors were perfectly balanced, and the sauce was not at all greasy. The beef with tomato and onions (also known as Hong Kong steak in other places) brought me back to my days when my parents were alive and we would go out for a special occasion and order this special dish. The steak was tender and so savory--it tasted exactly how I hoped it would. The only reason I gave This Place four stars is because of the smoking after hours, but they did ask us if we were bothered by it. Came here on a recommendation from another restaurant owner (his younger brother opened this place) with my family. We order 4 dishes, one of them being a string bean dish and one a fish. The waiter failed to tell us that the fish dish also had string beans as well (the menu didn't say anything). So, we had tons of beans last night. It took a while for our food to come out compared to other Chinese spots too. And usually the dishes come out one at a time, not all at once. Their kitchen needs to speed up. So some fish pieces were under cooked (no surprised all the pieces were different sizes), not awesome on their part. Our steak & Chinese broccoli came out and the steak was extra chewy & tough to eat. I mean Chinese aren't known for their steak cooking skills but I've had better from other places.
