It's a neighborhood dive bar, ideal to watch sports and have chicken wings. They certainly need more staff, but the two that were there were friendly and nice. I have always loved Cherry Tree but don't live in the area anymore, I went recently and got my favorite order of boneless wings with cherry tree sauce and skinny fries. I was upset to find they completely changed their chicken and fries and it was a downgrade from before, hoping they go back to the original that they had for years and years, it's just not the same, huge drop off in taste and quality. I love old school dive bars and this one certainly has that look and feel. old worn out wood booths and bar. A place that needs a renovation but you never want that so you can have that cozy old school vibe. I've been here a few times. The food is decent. Great place to have a drink watch a game the food is actually pretty good although over and over again if you order a burger or steak tips and you order the medium rare they will come out medium well every time. It's frustrating because the Greek salad was excellent and the staff are very great people. They just need to talk to that chef about learning how to cook medium rare. read more

Please bare with me this review is a tryptic, part one of a two hour adventure involving three local restaurant/bars. After a full Saturday of raking Falls first lief drop I was looking forward to a durable evening dinner away from my own kitchen. As a crow flies the closest establishment was the Cherry Tree Bar and Grill. Basic, tasty pub grub with a plethora of diverse sporting events steaming in unison on wide screens. The restaurant was not busy so I sat down at the bar and after a few minutes the server asked if I would like a drink but did did not ask if I wanted a menu which struck me as odd because the couple sitting to the right and left where asked if they wanted to order food immediately and where given menus. After receiving my beer the server took off to the other end of the bar and I didn't see her for the next 25 minutes. Two more more servers past by taking orders and serving the people on both sides of me, ignoring my libation and food interests. In the past I have always had great service from Hollywood and Pam but this particular Saturday evening seemed to be amateur server night. I was ready to move on to bigger and better things. I never realized how many people around me were such douche bags or how small the company, ah er, bar really was. I never realized how bad I had it, until I talked to other people about what they do. Ah er, go. Everything about it was a mess. Plus there was no where to go. The Cherry Tree is a nice neighborhood bar in West Newton. It's a small but has a lot of character--you get the impression that the ten or so people seated at the bar are there, in the same order, every night and that their TV doesn't miss too many Red Sox outings. You also get the impression that if a Yankees fan, by some unlucky stroke of fortune, stumbled in here they might not make it out again. In other words, it's great. The bar also does a nice job representing local microbreweries and the kitchen stays open late (past 11:00). That said, it's probably not the best option if you're looker for a younger crowd or a memorable Friday night. read more

went to the cheery tree for a bite to eat w/some friends. we sat and it took about 10 mins for the waitress/bartender/busboy to come over to us. it was a tuesday night but the were understaffed. we tried to keep that in mind but it was hard when it would be 10-15 mins between checks of our table to see if we needed anything. as for the food, we ordered a wing app and when it finally came, they were yummy but i think we were given maybe 6. the burger i got was so-so as was the burger one of my friend ordered. the turkey tips my other friend got were "dry to the bone" and she had to ask - wait, have our friend go up to the kitchen window & get sauce to pour on them just to get them down. we all decided that was our last trip there. read more

I thought that it just couldn't be possible that the best wings were all the way out in West Newton. I think I'm calling it off... I've lived in the area for two years and just went to the cherry tree for the first time last weekend and was happy that I did. I wish I had gone sooner to tell you the truth. It's a great place to watch some sports and grab something to eat. The first thing I noticed when I sat down was how clean the tables were (what a nice surprise!). The whole place is really clean actually and the service was fast and friendly. I like that they had a manager (I am assuming he was the manager) filling in the gaps for the waitress. He was there to get things for our table, clear empty glasses and ask us if we needed anything despite the fact that our waitress was very attentive as well. All in all...very happy with the service. The food is good also and the draft beer is nice and cold (and fresh). If you like buffalo wings, you have to try their house "Cherry Tree Sauce". It is delicious. Just about every seat has a good view of a widescreen tv so you won't miss any of the action either. I will definately be back. I'm giving an update now that I've been here a few times (now lived in the area 4 years) and I must have been there on a fluke night the first time I went because every time I've gone back since then, the staff haven't been rude but they are not friendly at all. If you're not one of the locals who go in there every night they won't talk to you or even greet you warmly. They kind of look at you like you are an alien looking for a free meal. There is one woman (a brunette) who works the bar whose boyfriend sits at the bar every time she works and she is by far the least friendly of them all. It's like you're bothering her if you ask her a question or ask for a drink. I'm dropping my rating down to two stars because of it. If you just want to eat at a table and leave then it's back to 4 stars. If you want friendly neighborhood place to hang out then go somewhere else. read more

Three & a half skewing positive...I came to this townie bar with a Newton bred friend on a Monday night during a Bruins playoff game and the atmosphere and crowd instantly had this Long Island native feeling nostalgia for the townie bars I grew up frequenting and having the requisite love hate relationship with. That wouldn't necessarily be enough to recommend it much, but fortunately I sampled the wings, which were very good, considerably above average. I tried the house special "Cherry Tree Variety" which was a creamier variation of the traditional buffalo style and quite delicious. I thought this sauce to be very unique but oddly enough the next day in Somerville at the Boston Burger Company I ordered a grilled buffalo chicken sandwich which was topped with a remarkably similar sauce, suggesting this might be a somewhat common regional variation. Whatever the case may be it would be a very good one. Beyond the good sauce the wings were perfectly crisp, which is key in judging wings in my opinion. Most all of the tables were ordering the "boneless wing" variations but I don't usually roll like that, I guess I am a wing traditionalist. This place is certainly a solid choice if you find yourself in town and want some excellent wings and legit local flavor. read more
