Praise for Fat Choy's recent grand (re)opening has been populating my social media feed, so I finally had a chance to pay a visit myself. Right off the bat, I was impressed with the interior. The pop art! The giant takeout box in the corner! The homage to Bruce Lee in the bathroom! Whoever was in charge of the restaurant's interior design took their jobs seriously. Service here is also fantastic. My husband and I were greeted boisterously as soon as stepped through the door, and when the guy at the counter heard this was our first visit, he was eager to explain the ordering process and the choices available. Fat Choy offers buildable and customizable bowls that are meant to be inspired by Chinese takeout options but healthier. What I appreciate is that they don't use seed oils (a big no-no in the health food world). It all sounds great. But in my book, food has to taste good. And this is unfortunately where Fat Choy fell flat for me. It might be 'healthier' Chinese food; it's also quite saucy and salty. Every single ingredient I selected for my bowl was heavily seasoned, and not always in a harmonious way. Even the more recognizable takeout elements of our meal - like sesame chicken - tasted a little off the mark. Some things were a little too gingery, others seemed a little heavy on the soy. In short, if you want to satisfy a craving for certain familiar Chinese takeout entrees, you might not want to bring those cravings here. But let me interrupt my mini-grousing session to mention one absolutely praise-worthy item here. The crispy mushrooms? Delectable. When we were ordering, my husband pointed to the pan of mushrooms at the counter. We were confused when they went into the back kitchen to get his serving. As it turns out, the ones in the front are a front; when someone orders it, they'll fry up a fresh batch in the kitchen so that customers never get the mushy ones. I was excited to try this new fast food restaurant. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a really cute spot. I was greeted and I ordered the build your own bowl: Vegetable fried rice Chili cacauliflower BBQ carrots Vegetable medley Ginger shrimp Chili crisp oil Wonton soup The bowl was actually tasty and I liked the shrimp. Was super excited to this place. We came for lunch on Saturday noon, restaurant was empty, had no wait time to get a table. The restaurant looked so pretty with all the colors, decorations and arts. The menu is all VEGAN, including kids menu. Have few non alcoholic drinks. Among all the items we ordered fried rice was the best, as it came with lots of vegetables like cabbage and sauce on top. Rest of the items were underwhelming to me. Singapore curry noodles was just noodles, it was barely any other ingredients in it to stand out. I expected it to have some other standout ingredients like eggs or vegetables. Wide rice noodles dish was also very plain. The cauliflower bao and Gen. Lee cauliflower both were disappointing. Cauliflowers were so over fried, they were unpleasant to bite on. Would have loved them to be mildly fried, with a softer moist layer. Spring rolls were okay. We got complementary banana rangoons, very generous from the chef. Those tasty pretty good, they clearly had touch of banana flavor, topped with sugar powder. So I went to this restaurant based off TT. I was super excited because it seemed like a typical carrot Chinese restaurant except vegan. To my surprise, when I got there, it was more like a chipotle/Qdoba style Asian restaurant. There were different bowl bases and toppings to combine but nothing like what the vids on tt showed. I was hoping to see maybe "kung pao mushrooms" or "Mongolian beef (not beef). I ended up getting a cauliflower and veggie rice base, topped with brussel sprout, mushrooms, tofu, peanuts, and scallion. All in all it was tasty. The flavor definitely can't be argued but I felt like it was something I could make at home. Hopefully in the rebrand they go back to the drawing board with the menu. read more

Fat Choy is back!! And it's so nice to have a new vegan addition in Bergen County. We ordered Cauliflower Bao Bun in apps which was yum! It had a super nice tangy flavor. For main course we ordered Kung Pao tots and tofu - the tofu was so amazing!! It was perfect - so soft inside and crispy at outside. Liked the overall flavor of kung pao. But I think they could put more tofu than tots to have this dish high in protein instead of carbs. We also got Singapore noodles which was the only dish we didn't like. It lacked flavor profile to it and could have been better. We would still give them another chance to try other dishes. The service was pretty quick and the staff is nice. They let you take your time and enjoy the food. We took advantage of patio sitting on nice summer night. But their interior looks welcoming too. read more

Asian version of chipotle/cava. Serving is huge, although im not sure if you could ask for a smaller serving. the crispy mushrooms are sooo good, and the eggplant is lightly battered with a good crunch and soft center. i find the chili oil too salty for my taste though. servers are pleasant. if you have allergies, please tell them. asian foods usually have peanuts, seafoods, might have cross contamination. place is clean. read more

First time and it lived up to the hype. Always wanted to try it on the LES but it's around the corner now so can't beat it!! Wife tried it yesterday and liked it but I loved it. Went basic with two dishes : both rockstar material. I love great bok choy and the Chinese Greens killed it with slivers of garlic in the side portion. Good service. Ordered a regular portion of the cauliflower which is crispy and popping with scallions and flavors. They've got soups and it's vegetarian plus kosher. YOM YOM!! I need to go back and see if it hits the five star spot but very exciting and awesome place. read more

Hate to give a bad review for a vegan spot, but the food was not it. Hot and sour soup was nauesating to say the least i sent it back. Dumplings were basic, nothing special, and the bao buns cauliflower were not flavorful. Not to mention the soy sauce was literally just salt, could not even eat it without making a face. Price is way too high for the most mediocre food, i wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Service was ok- seemed like the waitress was overwhelmed and annoyed with our requests. I'm truly surprised by the mid reviews, I found fat choy to be absolutely delightful. Was there for a weekday lunch and it was quiet - but a very bright and fun interior. To start we had green tea, bbq bao buns, and the cucumber salad to start. The cucumbers were both refreshing but savory/salty from the sesame and soy. The bbq buns had mushroom which I'm not a fan of, so I picked those out and enjoyed the rest - soft slightly chewy and a tangy sauce. For my entree I had the cauliflower tsao lunch special which came with rice and a dumpling. Crunchy and sweet on the outside and super tender cauliflower on the inside. Tried some of my friend's kung pan tots - basically a loaded tater tot dish, but I overall enjoyed the flavor. I'm definitely going back to try some of the noodles and soups! read more

Drove 1.5 hours for my wife's birthday at this "top" nj restaurant. Not worth it. Some food was bad, some was meh, and all way overpriced and just unhealthy. No sauce bowls for the sauces, which also just were not very good. Bland and over steamed dumplings, understufffed and greasy Reuben rolls. The steamed buns were decent, but the BBQ was deep fried. The beef and broccoli entree was soggy and overpriced (rice was extra), "kung pao" was just deep fried tater tots and tofu chunks with deep fried peanuts, way too salty and greasy, with no sauce and no real flavor (not spicy). "Singapore curry" was thin noodle with a sickening amount of uncooked curry powder mixed into it--dry and not good. Burger was basic and bland, not a great vegan burger, curly fries were good though, but again, fried stuff. Both dessert options were OK -- the banana Rangoons were creative, but again, deep fried. In sum, no house made seitan or high quality fresh options--IMO you can get better, better tasting, and fresher vegan options from your average Chinese restaurant for a fraction of the price. This is a far cry from being a top restaurant in NJ, vegan or otherwise. read more

Being a steadfast fast carnivore I can easily seee the merits of a plant based diet-at least a few times a week LOL The food was absolutely delightful especially the General Lee's cauliflower. Hot and Sour soup okay - Not Quite Beef and Broccoli as well Only so so dish was the Wide Rice Noodles It lacked a little flavor! Visited for lunch on a Tuesday and two of us shared the BBQ bao buns, General Lee's cauliflower, dirty lo mein and kung pao tots/ tofu. All are excellent, good sized dishes and enough to bring some home too. We followed it up with the banana Rangoon dessert, which was also great. The menu appears to be entirely vegan and the team behind it have really put some thought into it. Definitely recommend for anyone in the mood for Chinese food. read more

Just finished watching "You Are What You Eat" on Netflix which was the perfect segue to trying out Fat Choy, the plant based restaurant with an Asian flare in Englewood. Being the omnivore that I am, I didn't have huge expectations of being Wowed but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was tasty, I especially loved General Lee's cauliflower dish and cucumber salad. The server was very attentive and polite. The decor is bright and colorful and a nice little change from the usual. Although I'm not going to go complete vegetarian anytime soon, I like how inventive plant based options are becoming and this restaurant does it nicely. read more

We were excited to try since it is all vegan but that's where the excitement ends. Every entree and appetizer we tried was underwhelming on just plain bad. Had a delicious dinner here with friends. It's a great place to go if you like to share dishes. Highlights were the cucumber salad, the steamed dumplings, and the General Tso's cauliflower. It's abusive to encourage people to support your business by giving the false impression that yours is a values-based enterprise, only to then pull the rug out from under them when you decide you can make more money by appealing to meat eaters. Locals who knew their choice to operate as a vegan business was just a temporary and cynical cash grab would have take their business instead to Veggie Heaven in Teaneck, which has stayed vegan for over a quarter century. read more

The food and service is exceptional! My family of 5 went on a rainy Saturday afternoon, the place was pretty packed. We waited only 3 minutes. We were very happy with the food that was fresh and delicious. The service was especially great in that my 10-year-old son, who is autistic and has highly finicky needs, was catered to. We shared a chefs signature bowl "Jade" or "green" not sure but it was delightful, every item was unique and super delish, fresh, just a real treat. Vegan wanton soup was the best Wanton soup I've ever had, I savored every spoonful. Restaurant is fast casual not with "servers", counter service was excellent, knowledgeable, kind. The staff was so kind and even remembered us from when we came the first time. Was so excited to try this place following great reviews from NY times and Daily Voice, but surprisingly not quite as good as I thought it would be. The Edamame dumplings are a little bland. Can't decide if the sauerkraut spring rolls and Reuben sauce is a good combination. The Dirty Lo Mein was very salty and didn't realize that it comes with mixed vegetables because I barely saw any. I was excited to try the ice cream sundae but was deflated to see just 1 small scoop of ice cream in a tiny bowl with toppings. I am so used to seeing $12 ice cream sundaes that are in a larger container with big scoops of ice cream. The General Lee's cauliflower was really really good. I couldn't stop eating it. Overall, sadly, I am not impressed with the food that I tried. The food was so expensive. The amount that we paid could have gotten us a nice white table cloth meal. read more

I really was looking forward to going here but was I so disappointed . I ordered the fried rice w tofu. Basically it was white rice so dry w hardly no veggies and a couple of little tiny cubes of fried tofu no taste I'm am never concerned w price but white rice for 16$ is a crime. The soup the only thing I can say was a pile of salt . Finally the recommended the califlower general tso chicken . The califlower was soggy very small cut and mussy . Not nice firm cut pieces like u would expect and drowning in sauce like it's sitting in a pot all day till ordered. The server saw i didn't eat much and asked if everything ok I just said it wasn't very fresh or good and said o I'm sorry about that and that's it . I pd the full check in cash and we walked out .
