Fat Man's BBQ is excellent. Their ribs are especially good. When you visit this place you will find it clean, organized, and friendly. You can't go wrong with any of the selections on the chalkboard menu and their portions are generous. We've been eating there for years so I've come to some observations on their unique and (and trivial) way of serving customers. 1 - At the counter, you will notice they are very particular in the exact way they write down your order on the ticket, almost to a fault. 2- They won't take your to go order for any items you want to take with you after you eat in- at least for pie. You have to go back up to the counter though they cut you in line, they have lost some business from me that way as I change my mind when my stomach is full. 3- Their hours of operation are fluid. I've been known to call and have them tell me they'd stay open until I got there. Now that's service! However - call ahead if it's a holiday weekend or an Auburn championship game...they may not be home. I really love Fat Man's and have been going for years. Besides the ribs I love their large pork sandwich and their pig fries. Their meat is always juicy and fresh, never dried out - even when you get it chopped. Full pound of ribs. Seriously, wow. The lovely caramelized mahogany surface and rich pink penetration of a perfectly smoked rib is just the beginning. Tender as the fondest memories of childhood. Juicy as a Brazilian Zumba workout. It took all my energy not to talk with food in mouth praising the chef from across the dining room. Biting into these bad boys of bodacious BBQ is truly satisfying on a primal level without being barbaric. I finally found a BBQ place perfectly named for me haha. All jokes aside, you will leave fat from here, but it's worth it. Even though a 2 meat was not listed, I was able to add ribs to my pork plate. Fat Man's seems to be more about smoking their meat. The ribs were meaty and slightly burnt around for a smoky flavor. The pork was just as juicy, smoky, and easy to chew. The burnt ends mixed in with the pulled pork gave a nice crunch to add to it. 2 sauces: regular and hot. Sauce is ketchup based with a mild, smoky taste. The Hot has some kind of hot sauce added to it. If you have ever ate at Sonny's BBQ, a chain out of Florida, Fat Man's Bar-B-Que sauce taste very similar to it. Beans had pieces of pork added to it and the best part was that they didn't taste like Bush beans. Potato salad was mustard base and also had a mild flavor. No overwhelming celery or relish flavor to it. Fat Man's has a lot of other sides too. The mac and cheese looked good and the fried okra looks like it was breaded in the store. The place blares country music, and the inside of the place looks a lot more inviting than the outside. But scenic Lake Martin is almost right across the road. Holy Cow!!! This place is awesome!!! Their BBQ is great. Try the pig fries. SO good!! My wife and I always resort to their burgers, though. They have the best burgers on earth!!! They steam the buns and the flavors just melt in your mouth. If I could, I'd eat here five times a week. I've never had a bad meal here. The service is great, too. It's an order and sit down type place...almost a help yourself deal, but the staff is over the top friendly. They always have a smile and thank you when you walk out the door. I just love it. Eat here. You won't be disappointed. They do have a steady take out business. If you're in a hurry, call in. This place gets packed during peak hours. They cook to order, so don't expect the food to be super fast, unless you're ordering a simple BBQ sandwich. It's worth any wait. read more

I really like this place. BBQ is subjective, some like this and some like that. I do know a little about BBQ, Certified Judge (KCBS) and competed on the BBQ circuit for a couple of years. I had the pulled pork sandwich, super tender and really good smoke flavor. I asked for one rib to try - they gave it to me. I bought a whole slab before leaving. Ribs were really good, great smoke flavor and tender. A little pricy at $24.00 a slab. I think they could do better - If your keeping your food cost at 30% your making money. If they are paying $8.00 a slab, they need another vendor. I will go back and yes probably buy another slab. read more

It's always important for me to support locally owned business so going to Fat Mans fits that for me. Food taste good however what ruins them for me is the lack of customer service. Good customer service is much more than just speaking and telling customers have a good night. Tonight was a done deal for me...it's Friday night and I know they are generally busy so with that I am very understanding of longer than normal wait times. So when I called in my order I was told an hour before pick up. Upon arriving there were 3 other people waiting on food so I sat patiently waiting. Gentleman next to me had been waiting on his order for 2 hours and he gave up and left with no food so I was afraid it was not going to be a good visit! My order was for 4 so probably larger than many however everyone that was in there when we got there plus everyone else that came in got their orders before us. When I said something to the mature lady that's always at register she questioned if I'd been told an hour wait time? Then proceeds to tell me according to girl that took my order it had only been 1 hour 10 minutes which wasn't exactly correct but instead of voicing anything it was my issue not "I apologize for delay", " thank you for patiently waiting" or forbid saying "thank you for coming and hope you will give us another try!" I got nothing....to get home and order was not right! They had turned phone off so I drove back and same front lady said let me check if it's ordered...it was and paid for an magically was placed in a bag and she told me in a uncaring tone "sorry!" I could have overlooked everything tonight if there was more concerned for giving good customer service! For that I'm done! read more

This is GREAT BBQ! If you are in the Pell City area go to Fat Man's. If you have read my reviews you know I am generally unimpressed with BBQ in Alabama. Fat Man's is good enough to actually make me want it and not settle for whatever is most convenient. The parking lot is always packed but don't worry. Most people are picking up to go orders. Fries are thick and tasty. The meat is always perfectly cooked. It falls apart without being slimy or grissly. The sauce is great. I couldn't be happier with Fat Man's. read more

Great BBQ joint. The sign outside looks so old I was wondering if was even open, but after stepping inside I was surprised. The inside has been completely modernized. I got the sliced beef brisket and it was pretty good. It's hard to get beef brisket down here in Bama as most places just have the pig. Sides were pretty good too and the prices were very reasonable. When it's right, it's good. Problem is usually with girls taking orders. Never believe what they tell you for a pick up time. Just be accurate. I don't care what the wait is, I just don't want to wreck an evening because they are inaccurate. I could purposely go late and risk the food being cold. The menu items are not always available. That irritates me. I take the time to get 6 people's order, call it in, and it is a train wreck. Having said that burgers are out of this world. Catfish sometimes under cooked. read more

We love Fat Man's! I've been eating here since I was a kid, back before the old location burned down. The pig fries are the best thing ever and their BBQ and sauce is amazing! Four stars only because their hours of operation are sporadic and sometimes they are randomly closed. Also they are a bit pricy and I think their drinks should be a larger size for the price. Terrible counter help. Second time I. Ordered a large order and they left items out. No manager on duty to even return my money back. Of course no receipt was given to even post on here. Totally over charged at $35+ for pound of meat, large instant mash side of gravy and small sd of BBQ sauce with 2 thin pieces of cheesecake at $4+ each. Wife and I were traveling, stopped by Fat man's BBQ. Wow! What a surprise! Best BBQ we have ever eaten. The meat was cooked to perfection and the sauce was fantastic. Oh well. It was good for close to 3 decades. My first time there was back when the original brick building was there, before the fire. My last time there I ordered a Fat Cheeseburger. I thought it was taking a long time for it. Little did I know. I guess there was a cook in training. When I got home with the burger I took bite. ......no, I tried to take a bite. The burger was like a hockey puck. I was moving that day so I was busy. My next time there I mentioned the aforementioned hockey puck and was told I shoulda brought the burger back that day. I suppose someone thought I was lying and just trying to get a free burger. I've never had a real complaint there until last May. I've not been back since and I have no intention on going back. I couldn't begin to count the times I've eaten there but whatever the number is, it won't be changing. I was totally shocked when I was denied a comp burger. If you ever have a complaint with the food you better deal with it immediately. I was a regular customer there until this. There were some weeks I'd eat there 4 or 5 times a week. My husband and I ate at Fat Man's today as we have many times. I had the country fried steak plate and he had the pulled pork plate. We were both very satisfied with our food. To us it has always been delicious. The staff is friendly and the place looks very clean. I would have given it 5 stars except for the blaring country music.
