I came here to try the new udon that comes with garlic butter and clam! The butter was really good and actually paired really well with the soup and noodles. I do think that the food is a bit salty here, but it's good value and service is very quick. This is one of the few places I've been to that does cafeteria-style dining, so it's great for a casual meal.

Not a fair comparison. What do I mean by that? I've been to the one in Honolulu eons ago multiple times. That is the one that set the bar of expectations for me. I went there for lunch and breackfast. Yes, breakfast. This one is the first outpost in Vancouver and I waited until the hype died down. That said, I also went to another similar knock off in Seattle. It's called U:Don - not a typo. U:Don. Look it up. It's in the University Area. Aside from all of that, this location in Vancouver lacks the crazy line up you would see in Honolulu. ***That, is the giveaway.*** The food turns over faster. The concept is the same. Cafeteria set up. Grab a tray and plates and get your food in the line up. Then pay. Then seat yourself. I came on a quiet Saturday mid day. No lines, lots of seating. The udon texture was good. A bit of chew. Disappointment in the chicken karaage. It was not good. Definitely have had better. It was luke warm too. That pretty much sums up the rest of the food that you choose from under the heat lamps. Only the zucchini tempura was semi hot. Everything else was luke warm. The pumpkin squash coquette what the best of the lot in terms of taste. So how to rate? Likely the food will be better when there's a crowd. That way it turns over faster and is prepared on the spot, instead of sitting under a heat lamp. That's the trade off from waiting in line. Those are your options. Choose wisely and temper your expectatons. Pro tip. Park at International Village for free if you register and take a five min walk. Or take the train.

Huge restaurant. Quick to place and get your order cafeteria-style. Bus your own table afterwards. The udon and rice bowl I got looked almost identical and pretty much tasted the same. I would recommend the rice bowl with the beef and egg, as it was less salty than the udon bowl. I wished the udon broth was hotter. Seemed like it got cool pretty quick after I sat down, which was not great as it was super cold outside and I was hoping to get some warmth in me. As with most restaurants that sell tempura items, you and your clothes will leave smelling like food for the rest of the night and into the morning. Rewards program offered.

Yummy! The curry udon was very tasty along with the temperas and chicken karaage. This place has a cool setup. We walk in, similar to a cafeteria. We would grab a tray and order the types of udon we want. Then we would grab any additional temperas along the way. The at the end, we just pay for our food. The staffs were very helpful and friendly. The udons were very rich in the curry flavor.

Just some quick updates and hints: - large bowl js probably too large for most people if you also get a whole bunch of tempura, you will be too full - there are two kinds of egg you can get to add on, onsen (poached), or the regular half soft boiled egg - there is also a tempura egg. It's not bad! - the tempura is quite good and quite filling too. - the tan tan comes with beef snd and an egg, but the other noodles are more basic - I got the Kitsune which comes with tofu skin, it's really good.

Came back again after some time and boy was i impressed. After watching a Xmas show at Queen E Theatre, felt hungry and cold as it was raining. Looking for a ramen place with some friends and i remembered marugame was just around the corner. More variety now and they provide free water. I had to try the chicken katsu curry and rice , and beef udon bowl, and shrimp and fish cake tempura, as well as the tempura egg. Food came quick and hot. Very hearty on a cold rainy night. The egg was runny when i took a bite . The tempuras were crispy. Udon was done right and al dente. Broth was flavourful. The chicken katsu curry tasted so good. The curry so rich and hearty. Even at regular size, i feel it was enough. Service was quick and they even have a sign saying if you want fresh tempura, just say so and they will fry up a new batch. Place was clean and bright. Tables were cleared quick as well as the tray recycling area. Would repeat when in the area for sure

Tasty noodle soup that's affordable and fast. The experience is easy and streamlined. You line up, order, they pour broth into noodles, put it on a tray and slide down to the tempura area, choose tempura (or not), then pay and find yourself a seat. I like the regular #2 Beef Udon for a classic noodle soup. Also a fan of #10 Tan Tan Udon. Casual place inside and turnover is high. You should have no trouble finding a table even when there's a huge line outside. Udon noodles are made fresh in house. They're chewy and delicious. You can watch them making noodles while you're waiting in line, and you can see all the bags of imported flour. There's a paid parking lot down the block, but this is more convenient coming from the Skytrain or before a Canucks game etc.

Marugame is a great place for a quick and affordable bite. It's a cafeteria style restaurant where you'll be able to pick your own tempera. The service is quick and the employees are all friendly. This place is affordable but also can get expensive depending on how many different types of tempera you get. The tempera ranges in price from $1.99 - $4 (I believe). The udon itself is affordable as the basic one is only $6.49 by itself! Their handmade udon has the perfect chew and is such a comfort meal. I got the regular size udon and it definitely is filling especially if you get some tempera on the side as well. There's a water station where you can get some sauce on the side as well to dip your tempera.

Conveniently located by Stadium Chinatown skytrain station. Taste was good but everything was lukewarm or cold - not ideal when you want to enjoy a bowl of noodle soup on a cold winter night. Reasonably priced.

If you're looking for a quick and affordable meal around downtown, I recommend Marugame Udon. Although not as good as its Honolulu location, I am still grateful to have it in Vancouver. There is ample seating and the service is quick making it a great lunch spot or pre event meal. I ate here when it first opened and again when it was less busy. I think it has gotten better since opening.

really affordable meals with delicious flavour. The vibe is like a food court or a cafeteria, you order at the beginning then slide a tray down as they serve you the meals. Essentially Udon as fast food. There's some extra bits of add ons you can grab other stuff from a hot area. Service was fast as it's just a cafeteria style line up. I liked the meal and there's spacious seating area with a little grassy garden area to look out at, unique for downtown Vancouver.

Finally got a chance to try this place without having to stand outside for an hour. Took about a year for the lineups to die down. Parking here sucks. There's a SkyTrain station (Stadium) nearby though. As there were no signs or directions, I walked in and bungled the entire experience like a clueless tourist. So I'll save you some trouble with the directions below. FYI this establishment is more like a cafeteria than a restaurant. 1. There are 3 sets of doors. Walk into the R set (by the giant lantern inside, close to Beatty). The other (L, middle) sets which go into the seating area are actually exits. Yes this matters, as there's also a railing separating the ordering section. You can thank me later. 2. Grab a tray (and a "sides" plate if needed), and order your (udon) bowl. Place said tray onto the big red sticker on the kitchen window ledge. Wait for the staff to cook the udon and place the bowl on the tray. 3. Move the tray onto the cafeteria style rails and slide it down to the "sides" station. Grab whatever tempura or sides onto the sides plate. Also load up on the tempura flakes section. There's a pile. 4. Slide along the rails to the cashier station and pay. 5. Go to the station around the corner from the cashier, and grab some water and toppings (chili bits, dipping sauce etc.). Add to tray as needed. 6. Find an empty table and enjoy your meal. 7. Go to the garbage station and sort the empty/dirty dishes as needed. With all that out of the way, the place is pretty decent. It's no frills, but gets the job done. I guess my only question would be how long the tempura pieces have been sitting on display. Pricing is reasonable. Portion size is a wee bit small, but not a dealbreaker. Staff are friendly and helpful too. Yeah I wouldn't mind coming back at some point. Recommended.

Vancouver BC, June 22, 2025. Convenient to the Stadium-Chinatown metro, Marugame Udon is a terrific place to get a tasty, somewhat healthy, fast, and well-priced meal when you're on the go. My husband and I were slow to order at the counter as we were unfamiliar with some of the offerings, but we ultimately decided on (1) the #6, Curry Nikutama Udon (regular, CAD$13.99, about US$10.17), (2) the Chicken Katsu Curry Don, served over rice (also, $13.99, and (3) a Zucchini Tempura spear (CAD$1.99, about US$1.45). My husband enjoyed his bowl, which he described as tender sliced beef on top of a hot and savory homemade soup broth. My katsu curry had a chicken cutlet on top. Both were topped with fresh green onions. The zucchini tempura was tasty but could've used some salt. Both of us would've liked if our dishes included vegetables, but that may not be authentic or we may not have ordered the right dishes. The restaurant is cafeteria style wherein you move with your tray along the front counter leading to the cash register. The staff kept the line moving in an efficient manner in spite of the steady stream of patrons. At check-out, we were offered ice cream for only CAD$1 with each bowl purchase but we declined. The restaurant was clean, and has plentiful tables and chairs, as well as a table with sauces and water. One tip: if you arrive after 8 pm through closing, you can get 2 shrimp tempura, a bowl,of regular kake udon, and a coke for only CAD$9.99. Finally, I learned later that Marugame Udon is a franchise so you may be able to get this Japanese goodness without a trip to Vancouver!

Michelin starred quality in their service by how they explained the menu, brought out the food, came back around to refill waters. Just top notch service and elegantly so. The food was good but not of value. Their lunch set was a good introductory to what they offer. I enjoyed the food for its flavours and presentation but I thought that it was a bit overpriced. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, fresh and definitely elevated, but it was $50 for 10pcs of sushi, 2 appetizer sized samples of their appetizer or entree dishes, and miso soup (which we did not get and didn't realize till much later in the day). If you're wanting an upscale experience (and portion) of good quality food or wanting to impress other parties, then this is a nice spot. For regular eats, it's a bit too luxurious to be a casual thing in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and calm. They have a patio, which has a meh view overlooking the harbor, but beware of a breezy day. It will catch a bit of a wind tunnel. They have heaters and blankets but the heaters don't really reach unless you're sitting next to it.

Maybe it's an American thing to linger and enjoy a dining experience. To stay longer than needed to…read moresoak up the ambiance and give a good moment some extra time for memories. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).

Every guest is seated around the bar where they can watch the rolls being made fresh. Upon being seated you place your order by marking a piece of paper. We started off with cocktails: kaiju en neguroni and peach pafekuto and they were both refreshing. We each ordered a few rolls and my fave is the unagi hand roll. The unagi was flame-torched right in front of me. Prices are on the expensive side with small portions, but everything tasted fresh.

We picked up the 16-piece Premium Cut Rolls (toro, yellowtail, scallop, and truffle lobster), and the quality really showed in the taste. Everything was clean, fresh, and well-balanced -- no heavy sauces, no distractions, just really good fish. The toro was rich and smooth, the scallop was buttery, and the truffle lobster added a nice depth without overpowering the roll. Pickup was quick and seamless, and the food was packaged well for eating on the go before a flight. Portions are standard, but the flavor and quality are absolutely the highlight here. If you care more about how sushi tastes than flashy extras, Hello Nori is a great choice. Would happily come back next time.

Even on a Thursday night, the restaurant was nearly full, which speaks to its popularity. I ordered the Tako Sunomono and the Premium Chirashi Don. Tako Sunomono: The octopus was perfectly tender and the vinegar dressing was refreshing--exactly what I needed to wash away the fatigue of the day. Premium Chirashi Don: The presentation was stunning and immediately worked up my appetite. Every piece of seafood was incredibly fresh and of high quality. You can really taste the difference here. If you're looking for healthy, fresh, and beautifully presented Japanese cuisine, Shizenya is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
