A great experience here this morning at the Fat Spoon Cafe. We were lucky to have been served by Lucy. She filled us in on the menu and took our orders. Since it was around 10 and having already eaten something, I decided on Brunch and ordered the Cuban Sandwich and for my side I got a house salad. It was a very good sandwich cooked just right. I really liked the meat and pickles. The salad was fresh and pretty decent too. The place has indoor and outdoor seating, but we are in Ocean Springs, so sit inside! We stopped in for brunch on a Tuesday morning based on the reviews. The place was busy and we scored the only available table. Service was friendly and fast. I had the mimosa sampler which is a fun offering, but some of the flavors were a bit too sweet for my taste. The beer selection was small but had some good semi-local craft options. We split a LA omelette and it was excellent. Plenty of shrimp, just spicy enough. The portion was large so I'm glad we shared. The grits and biscuit were both very well executed. I've been coming here for years and rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I feel people should know before spending their money. I ordered the flavored champagne flight during brunch and specifically asked for very light syrup because the drinks are usually extremely sweet. When the flight came out, it tasted exactly the same as the regular version -- overwhelmingly sweet to the point that I genuinely could not drink it. When I politely mentioned it, the bartender/manager said "that's just how it comes" and initially refused to do anything about it. I sent the flight back and ordered a plain glass of champagne instead. Our server told us she would speak to the manager and have her come talk to us, but apparently the manager refused multiple times because she was "too busy." Eventually, the same flight was brought back out after they said they had poured some out and added more champagne on top. Unfortunately, it was still far too sweet, and I still couldn't drink two of the four glasses. What disappointed me most wasn't even the drinks -- it was the customer service. Mistakes happen, but the dismissive attitude from management and lack of concern made the experience frustrating and uncomfortable. The server also seemed irritated at being caught in the middle rather than interested in resolving the situation. I still tipped 20% because I know serving isn't easy, but after today I honestly don't see myself coming back. read more

Fat Spoon - Mississippi Coast I ordered debris grits with fried catfish, fries, coleslaw, and coffee. * The roast beef debris was so salty it actually stung my mouth. * My first plate of catfish was soft, loose, and falling apart, so I sent it back. * The replacement catfish was bland but somehow still tasted scorched. * The coleslaw was swimming in a watery white liquid and tasted like straight vinegar. * The coffee was so weak it wouldn't even hold creamer. This was hands-down another horrible meal I've had on the Mississippi Coast. For a restaurant in a major tourist area, this level of food quality is unacceptable. But for this area being a tourist attraction, these restaurants would not make it one and done it's so many people coming through here the restaurants seem to be successful but food quality wise, horrible! The chefs and the cooks are arrogant and egotistical so you can't tell them anything without them getting offended or outright mad. I left that slop on the table. read more

They had a little late lunch crowd but service was quick and professional. Everyone working there seemed eager to help one another out. My daughter had a burger (some kinda smokey something burger with caramelized onions nad mushrooms). She loved it. Fries were really good, too! I had a standard breakfast of two scrambled eggs, cheese grits, bacon, and a biscuit that was like heaven! Oh man, that thang was so tall and soft like a pillow. As a professional chef and someone who has spent years ghostwriting for several food blogs, I tend to pay close attention to the details when dining out. I had high hopes visiting Fat Spoon Café while in Ocean Springs, but unfortunately the experience fell short. While sitting near the bar, I overheard a staff member speaking negatively about another employee and making snide remarks that seemed directed at customers. Hearing that kind of conversation in front of guests felt very unprofessional and created an uncomfortable atmosphere. The food itself was also disappointing. I ordered a waffle and it tasted very much like something made from a boxed mix rather than being prepared fresh in-house. Small touches like scratch-made batters can make a huge difference in both flavor and overall experience. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits, and that dish was equally underwhelming. The sauce was extremely watery and overly salted, which felt like it was trying to compensate for a lack of layered flavor. The grits themselves appeared to rely heavily on cream for their texture. If you know how to properly make grits, dairy isn't necessary to achieve creaminess. A slow cooking process with water, salt, and good grits will naturally create that creamy texture, with butter added at the end for richness. Using cream can speed things up in a rushed kitchen, but it's not needed when the dish is prepared with care, and it can also be an issue for guests who are sensitive to lactose. read more

Oh buddy this place was spot on. All three kids found something they liked and loved. We all loved the grits. My oldest got the seared tuna which was done just right My husband got the LA Spoon Deluxe. The crawfish etouffee on top was very nicely done. Location is great, right off the main road and parking is easy to find. We sat outside, ordered a mimosa flight with the avocado toast and the waitress recommended the breakfast quesadillas. The mimosa flight was unpleasantly sweet for mimosas; the strawberry mimosa tasted as if it was mixed with strawberry soda and champagne. The avocado toast was a lot and lacked flavor, the avocado did not look fresh and tasted like it was packaged. The breakfast quesadilla was decent. We really liked this place...but there isn't much about Ocean Springs we don't like! Friendly staff, big windows for people watching and a nice selection of breakfast and lunch/dinner items. We were there on a quiet morning and Hubs had the La Spoon Deluxe omelette. Granted, he would eat etouffee on a shingle, but he loved (and ate!) every bit of the fluffy eggs, veggies, cheese and crawfish, along with the hot, crispy breakfast potatoes and toast (see picture). I had the Boudin Scrambler which was delicious and a bit spicy, with its pepper jack cheese. I would have liked the veggies cooked a bit more but the al dente onions peppers added a nice texture. This is one of the best breakfast spots I've ever been to! The food is amazing! The service was great, and our server was friendly and attentive. It's a bit small inside, but they easily accommodated our group of five. There's also outdoor seating as well. We started with the beignet sticks, which were perfect with our coffee. I had the eggs Benedict, and it was delicious. My son ordered the shrimp and grits. I was a little jealous because it looked amazing! I did get to taste it though. The sauce was incredible, and the shrimp were large and fresh. My mother-in-law had the Greek omelette, which also looked great. Visited this new location in Ocean Springs. We were greeted by a friendly server upon entering. The place appeared to be clean and particularly quiet from loud music that sometimes is played in restaurants which was a pleasant change. I ordered Avocado Toast with feta cheese ( hold the tomatoes) and top with an over easy egg. It was topped with balsamic vinegar which at first I was apprehensive about. All plates were well seasoned and delicious. ...probably the most delicious Shrimp & Grits I have ever had. Recently took a trip down to the coast. As always, we were on the hunt for someplace to get brunch. After reading the yelp reviews and browsing the menu, we decided to try the Fat Spoon and I'm so glad we did. As soon as we walked in, we were welcomed and made our standard coffee order. The waitress suggested a Bloody Mary. She said it wouldn't disappoint. I'm from Wisconsin and we take our Brandy Old Fashions and our bloodys very seriously. I went ahead and ordered the bloody. She was right. It was delish and reminded me of home . We ordered the Beignet Sticks for starters and they came out pretty quick. They were very tasty and not too heavy. One order was the perfect amount for us to share. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits and I ordered the eggs Benedict with a twist. I substituted the ham for their famous "debris" for a very minimal up charge. This was hands down the best breakfast we have ever had. I don't like seafood, but I couldn't stop stealing bites off my husband's plate. And my Bennie was heavenly. His plate came with a griddled biscuit that was so good, he ordered a second that we shared. If you find yourself lucky enough to have the opportunity to have breakfast here, you should do it. This will be the place I tell all my people to go to and we will certainly be back. read more
