My husband and I usually visit the Fat Tomato for lunch during the summer but tonight we were getting to town around 6:30pm and wanted a quick good dinner. We saw the open sign but they were set to close soon. I walked in greeted by a very pleasant young woman and placed my order for Rogers Thanksgiving sandwich for my husband and I got the black bean burger. I had such a nice conversation with who I think was one of the owners as she was closing up. They were all so pleasant as I had placed my last minute order. Then when we got to eat the burger and sandwich they were so delicious! My black bean burger was very well seasoned, toasted bun was a very nice touch, I got the boom boom sauce sauce on side which was delicious. My husband said the stuffing on his sandwich was fantastic, Turkey was tender and delicious. We give them five stars for both food and service!!! read more

The place is new, and clean overall in the interior. There are games and things to play with which at first glance is kinda cool, but then I started thinking about all the other people's greasy unwashed fingers that had handled the Rubik's cube I was trying to solve and I lost interest in continuing to play with it. The menu is too long, not coherent to any style other than "stuff that's popular nowadays" and full of abbreviations that require explanation,and the names don't quite line up with the description so it's easy to mis-read what's on a particular item. They would do better just to say "we have three hot dogs, regular, spicy, and chicken" and leave it at that rather than playing guess-what-"PSK POP" means". I got the Thai style hotdog which comes with cilantro, shredded carrots and peanut sauce. The hot dogs are ok, and large. And we got a basket of sweet potato fries which were $3. So for a dog (and included chips) and fries it was like $7.50. A tad steep. The hotdog was barely cooked. Not sure how it was cooked. It certainly wasn't grilled which would have paired better with the Thai theme of this hot dog. Instead it might have been boiled for about 2 minutes. Not sure. The gigantic bun was raw. For a $4.50 hotdog, you better take the time to butter that sucker and grill it. Or at least toast it. The peanut sauce was fine, albeit sweet. Here's the kicker: in a specialty hotdog that costs as much as a sandwich and has only 3 toppings, they forgot the cilantro. Not just that they forgot it, they were out of it entirely and served it sans-cilantro. Not a word. The manager himself admitted to me later that he does the produce shopping himself and that they had no cilantro that day. Ok, so take it off the menu. Or tell your staff to tell people you're out. Or when the chef discovers that he's missing a key ingredient instead of pressing forward and finishing, plating, and serving an incomplete item, give the customer the chance to get something else other than a boiled hotdog drowning in sweet peanut sauce. Nope. I had to discover it on my own that, halfway through the hotdog, hey wait a sec - wasn't this supposed to have something other than sweet peanut sauce and carrots? Sriracha? yes. Now it's better. Nope... still missing something... Right! Cilantro! Yeah. So I was 3/4 of the way finished with my hotdog when the manager apologized and said I could have something else. Well, I'm not hungry anymore, but thanks. Should have asked for a coupon for a free hotdog some other time. The sweet potato fries were quite good. read more

Stopped here for lunch while spending the weekend in York. It was a bit disorganized (they "lost" our order, but recovered well once they realized it) but despite that I'd still go back there again. The sweet potato fries were a standout--best I've ever had, served with 3 inventive dipping sauces (a nice touch). My fiancee and I went to Ogunquit, ME for the weekend and usually we go to the bagel basket but they were closed. So we went to The Fat Tomato Grill. We went for the next 3 days in a row! My husband, our youngest son, and I, ate lunch at the Fat Tomato Grill (FTG), a week ago. It was the end of our vacation, and our 2 older kids weren't hungry, so we left them at the cottage to do a few end-of-week chores (and man, I wish those kids had a Yelp page so I could give them a frank chore completion review), while we set off in search of brunch at Rick's All Season Restaurant. Apparently, Rick's closes at 1:00, rather than 2:00 on Sundays, so -- no luck. As we headed out to Route 1, in search of something brunchy, I wondered if we shouldn't just go to FTG (across the street from Rick's), but was too hungry to muster up the strength to suggest a new place to the 2 pickiest eaters in my family. Twenty minutes later (after cruising Route 1, and then Short Sands, where we realized we had no change for the meters), I finally spoke up about FTG, and mentioned my gen'l Yelp impression was positive. Ironically, I was the only one who didn't love my lunch, but that's at least half my fault. My husband got the Meatball Sub, and to call this beauty a "sub" does not do it justice. I had a small bite and it was even better than it looked. It was on an incredible roll, which would have been great all by itself. My son got a cheeseburger. His one complaint? "It's too big." I ordered a BLT&C on wheat, but asked them to hold the "C" (cheese) because who wants cheese mucking up a BLT? Much like the Meatball Sub baguette, the bread on my BLT was gorgeous. If it's not made in house, then the owners of the FTG should get down on bended knee and thank their baker. The problem? It wasn't toasted. Technically, that's my fault. I failed to ask for it on "toast," I don't think I've ever had a BLT on untoasted bread, before. I didn't expect it. Again, it's my fault, but since I'm in my 40s and have never had a BLT on untoasted bread, but am sure I've failed to specify "toast," I think the counterman should have asked me. Is this fair? Business was slow while we were there, so a hectic pace is no excuse. I was too hungry & disappointed to send it back and ask for it to be toasted (which is also my fault). My second (and marginally legitimate) complaint is the bacon. It just tasted...different. It didn't taste bad, or rotten -- just not right. I wonder if it was some sort of flavored bacon (like applewood smoked, or whatever is the rage), that the menu sign failed to mention. There's a flavor expectation for classics, like BLTs. If you're going to get creative to the extent that the basic taste changes, that's fine, provided you make mention of said changes on your menu board. That said, the lettuce was lovely (no iceberg, here) as was the tomato. My 3rd (and actually valid) complaint is that even though I asked for the sandwich without cheese, it came with "cheese" -- a cold, unmelted white, Kraft American Single. Was my mistake asking for "no cheese" rather than "no 'Cheese Food'?" That said, thank goodness it was unmelted, because it was easy to peel off. Note to the owners: your bread is so good, you should be ashamed of yourselves for putting Kraft Singles on your sandwiches. At least get a decent real American Cheese, or better yet, a cheddar (although honestly, I wouldn't have any of it on a BLT). FTG offers an interesting array of beverages. There was beer (well beyond the basic choices, and probably wine -- I disremember, because it was Sunday afternoon and we went out to eat to give the laundry time to finish). My son had a Stewart's Orange 'n Cream Soda. I had a sip. It tasted just like a Creamsicle and we agree it's the best Orange Soda we've ever had. I'd only ever had Stewarts when visiting family in the Canadian Maritimes (PRO TIP: in Canada, the Cream Soda is red, not brown), so I was surprised to see any Stewart's in Southern Maine. The glass bottle is a bonus. FTG offers a few different sodas under its own label, too. My husband had their Cream Soda and said it was fantastic. I had a sip and found it cloying, but often have that reaction to cream soda. I just had Diet Coke, so there's no more to report on that front. I loved the old pictures of classic eating joints on the wall. I wish I'd had my phone or a notepad with me, so I that I could have jotted them all down. Among them were the Clam Box (Ipswich, MA), Red's Eats (Wicasset, ME), Sprague's Lobsters (ditto), both Pat's & Geno's in PA (of Philly Cheesesteak fame), a Coney Island Hotdog Stand, and more. I think they lend charm to the joint and speak to the owners' passion for their craft. Like an earlier commenter, though, it's strange to me that the place is called "Fat Tomato Grill" but the interior is blue. It should be red, or green, with red accents. You bus your own tables. $22.00 for lunch - Gourmet Hot Dog and Bacon Cheese Burger , two orders of fries and two drinks. but I don't get the name.The name does not resonate when you look at the blue walls and the pictures of old diners on one wall, however the staff was great. Fat Tomato Grill is convenient if you are on your way to the beach in York Maine. However, the food is not good. My mother got a turkey sandwich that was basically a slab of bland turkey thrown between stale bread, gross. You are better off going around the corner to the Stonewall Kitchen café. Which was packed and rightly so. This is a local dive for locals. Give it a miss and bring your own lunch or stop at Stonewall which is the only other place I've found in York Maine that is worth eating at. read more

Perfectly acceptable food, priced incorrectly. First off, the prices here are simply too darn high. When you look at the board, you will get sticker shock. Maybe the tourists don't during the season, but I'm a semi-local, and this place makes my wallet a bit sad. I always done take out here. The dining room is small, and it seems like it is either packed to the gills or tumbleweeds are rolling by. The food is prepped almost inches behind the register. The nights I have gone in, the two women behind the counter are efficient and do a good job with food prep. They have to, because they can be monitored on every trip. As another review stated I really wanted to like this deli. I ordered a Reuben. To start, the person taking the order was simply not friendly to me or the other customers I watched come in. I can get over that, I'll take any amount of attitude to get great food. But the sandwich was the worst I ever had. It took about 20 minutes to get the reuben. Who knows why because it was barely warm and looked hastily thrown together with cheap corned beef that I could get at Walmart, nasty sauce and old tasting sauerkraut. To top it off, one half the sandwich had strawberry jelly smeared on it. This gave me serious concerns about food safety. If I hadn't left and eaten the sandwich elsewhere I'd have asked for my $8 back. I don't like to leave bad reviews, and I hate trashing local businesses but seriously this was just the worst dining experience I've had in Maine and with several of the best sandwich shops in new england on minutes away this was truly inexcusable. read more

Ok was on a long hiatus (literally 6 weeks from work and figuratively months from Yelp), but this easy going new lunch place caught my attention! They opened about 6 weeks ago, and are as all new places very friendly and courteous. But that's not all I liked about this place. Its in Rowan Cafe's old spot and they have changed it a bit. for starts they are open until 8pm... yay! I can't tell you how irritated I was when Rowan refused to serve me a sandwich at 2:55 pm since they close at 3pm. hmm I guess I am still irritated about that, but that's for another review. They serve sandwich's, salads, burgers and hot dogs. simple enough, but seem to get quite creative with their toppings. I can't wait to try some of their combinations especially the Thai hot dog... specially since it is a PSK pop dog. We had Cubano sandwich and the Chix Gyro. All ingredients were fresh and delicious. The pita on the Chix gyro was a little too doughy, and the chicken was not the traditional shaved kind. you know the kind that comes from a bog fat block on meat that was roasted on the spit. This chicken was well marinated grilled white chicken breast, which I know is served in some middle eastern version of Gyros, but unfortunately not the kind that is thought of immediately when one orders a gyro. That become my reason for the one less start. Anyway bottom line a friendly place with fresh delicious food, where the ingredients are thoughtfully selected. I look forward to many more meals there! Fat Tomato is a great place if you want to eat well and fast without making it into "a dining experience". Just to eat under $12/person & to get on your way. The kids' favorites are present. We stopped by this small grill on Sunday afternoon. The place is very CLEAN - dining room, counter, coffee area, bathroom, kitchen and even the storage room where the door happen to be open at that moment. The menu delivers exactly what it promisses - "comfortable food, honest prices". All-American favorites - sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and salads. My only gripe is the the selection in each category can be shorter, to make the selection faster. Nice touches are: a complimentary apple with a sandwich and nice line-up of baked goods - again all-time American favorites, clearly home-made style & appealing. The grill was manned by a father-son team - very friendly and clean-cut. From what we observed while eating, the duo is very much a part of the community and the grill is frequented by the locals. read more

Everyone's always friendly and I've never been in there when they aren't busy - it's a local fav. Even swamped, they manage to get food out in reasonable time - and delicious food at that! We were looking for a place that offered gluten free menu options and happened upon this online, so we took a chance because the reviews were good. The food did not disappoint, very good! Lots of great options. I would love to rate The Fat Tomato higher but since the rating is on more than food I cannot. When we walked in and asked about seating it was clear we'd never been. The young girl behind the desk was very short, providing little to no explanation on what to expect, despite the fact that the atmosphere is a little bit different than your average dine-in experience. You order and pay at the front and then you choose an available table and you clear your table when done (sort of like Panera but you don't know it if it isn't explained). When I asked if we could sub in sweet potato fries instead of regular fries for my son and pay a little more (like most restaurants do) she could not answer me. The manager came out to answer the question and it was a resounding no, if you want those you can by a whole basket for five bucks in addition to your son's meal. Otherwise it's fries or chips. My son isn't a big fan of either but seeing that the chips in the basket on the counter were pretty high quality I asked him to take a look and see if he'd rather chips, at that moment the manager threw a 25 cent bag of lays on the counter and said "here it comes with these chips." Apparently I should have known there was a stash of cheap (horrible) chips under the counter. Ok, it's a private business and that's the policy, I can't begrudge that though it's not a patron friendly policy and doesn't inspire repeat business but the food was SO good I probably would have gone back if not for the grouchy manager/owner and overall lack of friendly customer service. read more

I really liked this place. I actually didn't think it was too expensive; however, I am from LA so used to high prices. We had a veggie sandwich and it was massive (I recommend you split) and delicious, very fresh vegetables and very good bread. The fries order was also good sized and they were also really good. The turkey stuffing sandwich was also massive and very good. I also had a Greek salad that was also really good sized (8$) and had a ton of feta on it. I really liked this place and one other point. We went here for a Sunday brunch. They have limited seating but moved some tables around to accommodate us nicely. The food was terrific. Blueberry pancakes, the steak and eggs, as well as the frittata. The servers were friendly and very attentive. Expect a long wait for the steak and eggs, but only because the steak is baseball sized. First off, you should know that I'm basing my star rating on the veggie burger, the only menu item I've tried, but as a total restaurant rating, I'd give the place 3 stars. Let's start with the veggie burger. It is to die for! I've been an on and off vegetarian for 20 odd years and have eaten my fair share of veggie burgers. Many are bland and dry, or just gross meat substitute, or simply not good tasting. The veggie burger at Fat Tomato Grill is glorious! They make it there and it is delicious...a yummy blend of veggies, beans, and walnuts for a nice little crunch. The burger is huge and moist, is cooked until a bit crisp at the edges, and comes on a nice bun. They have a number of sauces/dressings on their menu, so you can add your own flavor enhancement, which is so much nicer than just the regular ketchup or mayo option. The reason I give the place a 3 star rating is that I'm big into atmosphere and ambiance and this place is sorely lacking in this department. The order area is nice and bright, but the dining area is dark, dingy and uncomfortable. The chairs are uncomfortable and the tables are too close together. There is no decor to speak of, although they've tried to clean it up with paint and some photos on the wall, the bulk of it is just sterile looking and boring. There is no table service, but still, the tables where people had recently eaten were left dirty. There were two people just standing around and during the course of our meal, one person actually left because it wasn't busy. Sure, not busy with customers, but they could have been plenty busy cleaning the tables and floors, removing dishes, dish rags and buckets that were clearly visible, and straightening up the games and other clutter that laid about. Fortunately, decor and ambiance can be greatly enhanced and worked on, which I'm hoping they will do as they grow. And hopefully the other menu items stand up to the deliciousness of the veggie burger, to keep people coming back. I liked the people who worked there and the owner seemed really nice as well, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they increase the overall ambiance/cleanliness of the place, at which point, they won't be able to keep me away. read more
