Stopped in after the Halloween parade. Decidedly so they were swamped, we were greeted and treated with kindness and nice service. They didn't skip a beat considering they close at 9, and people were flowing in at 8:15pm. We got a quick drink and a snack of the poutine which had tons of delicious sausage gravy. The portion could have been a bit larger for the $12 price tag, but there was a lot of sausage gravy to sop up, and maybe the egg could have been more runny. Kinda disappointed... This place had all the makings of being a really cool homegrown restaurant. I love to support the small restaurants and avoid chains. The interior screams upscale dinner and is really cool. The service was slow, cold, and lacked the attention you would expect. The food experience was not great, although it was all plated very nicely. I had the meatball sub and coleslaw, which was OK - the coleslaw is definitely not going to win any prizes. Wifie has a blue cheese burger on greens, which was also OK but not memorable. Babygirl had the Italian sub, which was bland and dry. I was a little surprised that they charge you for refills on unsweetened iced tea especially when it comes in a small mason jar. Our first visit here and I'm sure we will get back. This is a small spot that serves a casual menu, and looks like they also have full bar service (will have to come back and try that). The Spudsters for a started are a real treat. Not quite tater tots, but mashed potato in a crispy coating and deep fried. They offer several seasonings (I tried garlic parmesan) and several dipping sauces. I chose truffle ketchup. Really great combo! What we really liked about The Kitchen was that they offered half sandwiches. We find that most sandwiches are just too big for lunch, and who wants to take home a sandwich with soggy bread? A half sandwich is just perfect, less wasteful and more economical. I tried the curry turkey sandwich which I thought was quite tasty. I ordered takeout from The Kitchen in Portsmouth after reading on their menu that "in-house sandwiches come with coleslaw and a pickle." Naturally, I assumed that meant every sandwich came with those sides. Unfortunately, when I picked up my order, there was no coleslaw and no pickle. The sandwiches themselves were delicious but small for the price--about $15-$20 each--so the lack of sides really stood out. For a place with such great flavor, it's disappointing that their menu language feels misleading and leaves take-out customers with less value for the same price. The menu is great...so many things in each section i wanted to try and i am a picky eater. I had the Cobb Salad with a whole host of "sally" requests and they were happy to accommodate every one. We stopped at The Kitchen for a early dinner, 5:00pm. There were a few parking spots right in front of the restaurant and we got one. The waiter treated us immediately and we took a seat at the long high top table between the bar and the tables. We started with the fried brussels which were so good. The honey Dijon dipping sauce was a nice compliment of tastes. I had the spicy pineapple cocktail which was sooooo very good. To eat I got the "Going Back to Cali" which was a turkey burger with asparagus and avocado. It was really good. I think they used a premade turkey burger patty - wish they made their own patty. Could it be the hanging dollar bills on the ceiling? I argue that the large array of infused liquors are one of the draws to the Kitchen. They always have 20+ infused liquors which they then incorporate within their cocktail menu. My favorite? Definitely try one of their Bloody Mary's, which is made with a house roasted tomato blend. They. Are. The. Best! And they come with house-made pickled carrots. By honestly, all of their cocktails are well-made and they also feature a decent selection of local beers on tap. As far as the food, there is a wide array of appetizers, soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches. One of the things that the Kitchen is known for is their potato spudsters, which are mashed potato bites that are fried. You can choose from a variety of seasonings and sauces to have with them...and they are well worth it. Some of my favorite sandwiches are the curry turkey salad sandwich or the pulled buffalo chicken sandwich. Their portions are fairly big, and all of their burgers and sandwiches are served with coleslaw (no fries, just spudsters for an app!). A few weeks ago I spent days in the ICU at the local hospital. My mother had been there until she passed. The ICU team was amazing and my siblings and I just wanted to thank them. After my return home to NC I started looking for local places to send a little something to the hospital. I finally decided on The Kitchen based on the reviews and pictures on Yelp. I called and asked for the manager and spoke to Terry. I told Terry what we were trying to do and she was so helpful! We went back and forth for a few minutes and by the end of the call I had them catering lunch for the team at Portsmouth Medical ICU. I asked Terry to include a photo of our mother and a small note with the delivery. She emailed me with all the details and all was great. The rest of us four ordered We all got our appetizers, but no soup for my daughter. We were finished our apps before her soup came, and she had to ask about it. Then, we all got our main courses and she did not , So, our waiter gave poor service. It happens. Our bill was $132, not cheap when no alcohol involved. My daughter happened to be paying She left only a $10 tip. In her way out, the manager accosted her and raised his voice. The final straw was he said. "we kbow your family and you are poir tippers " In my book, 20% for exceptional service, 15% for normal, and 10% or below doe poor service. Accosting a customer about the tip? Passing through on a Friday night on our way back home to Maine, we discovered The Kitchen. They did not disappoint! Walking in we were skeptical as it was a packed house and a little loud. The servers were on it, though! Fast seating, attentive, and friendly. The food...oh, the food... We started with the Fried Brussels Sprouts and the Spinach Salad. The sprouts were cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The dipping sauce was a great pairing. The Spinach Salad was fresh and extremely flavorful. To the main course! A Cuban Panini and Short Rib Panini. The Cuban wasn't heavy on the stomach, but rather heavy on the flavor. The meat was especially tender. The Short Rib, the same. Both came with a house made slaw that appeared to have a slight Asian vibe to it. Very lite and tasty, as well. To put an exclamation on the meal we have the cannolis. House made lemon vanilla filling with a premade shell. I was skeptical about the lemon filling, but it was delicious! I personally prefer a thicker cannoli filling as this was a little runny, but it was still great! Oh my goodness, that Roast Beef sandwich was exactly what I was looking for after a distillery tour. The roast beef had the perfect amount of spices and the cinnamon adder was delicious. The sandwich was just the right portion we're you didn't feel like you needed more or less. The gluten free bread was well Toasted so it made the sandwich whole - my gluten free folks know what I'm talking about when GF bread is an adder and you end up eating the interior only. They have a seriously dangerously yummy appetizer on the menu: The Spudsters (which are creamy mashed potatoes fried in oil with a crispy scrumptious outside shell) - they just melt in your mouth while giving you the satisfaction of a crunch- whoever the chef is, they are a genius!!! Cuban bbq sauce, truffle ketchup and smoke paprika aioli (all GF) were a perfect dip to the garlic Parmesan Spudsters. I would travel one hour to this place just to have these!! My husband's black and blue burger looked good. Note that almost anything on their menu can be made GF even the pasta. The barman also mixes his own whiskey which was pretty good. When we went in there were a couple of people but five minutes later, there was not a seat to be had. The ambiance was that of a diner with a butcher block style bar and long seated bar in the middle of the restaurant. There were families, older folks, young folks, people dressed up to go out on the town after, families...it has something for everyone. This is my new fave spot in Portsmouth NH. read more
