We were turned on to this place by the YouTube channel The Roman Guy. So glad we did. Truly unique among all of the handmade gelato we tried in Italy. The flavors are fantastic and you can taste the excellence and craftsmanship. The service was friendly and efficient. My fiancé couldn't decide on her last flavor so she asked the server what his favorite was and he smiled and added it. Nice touch. Do yourself a favor, do not miss this gem while in The Monti or even make a trip over after seeing the Colosseo. It's worth the short walk. Update, the review above was yesterday. Not the biggest fan, but decent! They have a lot of very original flavors which is pretty cool. I got the pistachio, pineapple ginger, and mint chocolate flavors. First of all, they don't even fill up the cups all the way like other places and the gelato wasn't as soft as normal gelato and they actually used ice cream scoops to serve-not very authentic. The flavors were okay but not the best. The pineapple ginger had a weird after taste, as did the mint chocolate. And, they all had very chunky bits of the mix ins which I found kind of tasted like sand in the gelato that ruins the beautiful texture of gelato. Also! THE BEST GELATO EVER. After a long day exploring the Colosseum and Roman Forum, my cousin and I were craving some gelato. Yelp led us here and I'm so glad it did. It was pretty crowded when we arrived, but the line moved super fast. I got the Thumbelina and Snow White and holy #$!@ it was so good! I ate my cone so fast that I had to get in line for another cone. For my second cone, I got the gianduia (Prince's Kiss, I think?) and the basil gelato!! Gianduia is my favorite and this place does it RIGHT with hazelnut chunks embedded in the gelato. The basil was like eating cold, creamy pesto. If that sounds gross, trust me it isn't! Hands down my favorite ice cream/gelato place in the ENTIRE WORLD. My boyfriend and I stayed closeby for 5 days or so and we went here literally EVERY DAY. Most times twice a day. We always see this very friendly ice cream man and he remembers us and always says hi. He was prob thinking "Here comes those regularly scheduled fat Americans," but whatever, the gelato is delicious. I recommend getting their Thumbelina flavor, it is made with walnuts and rose. My boyfriend loves the pistachio, very chunky and flavorful. We tried most of the flavors here and did not find a single one that we did not like. They also have a basil and honey flavor, oddly delicious. Apricot is also tasty. If you are craving gelato after visiting the Colosseum, or if you are in Monti, this place is definitely worth the visit. I like to think the best things in life are simple and uncomplicated, that these moments are so pure, none of the bullshit of everyday life could possibly contaminate. This is how I feel about Gelateria Fatamorgana. It was by far the best gelato I had during my two months in Italy. I liked Giolitti. I loved Corona. Old Bridge was alright. But Fatamorgana won me over with its amazing flavors, fresh flavors and its beautiful location in Monti. I tried the basil with honey and walnuts and the Syrian pistachio, enjoyed along the stone wall in Piazza degli Zingari. The lamps of Monti illuminated the warm Roman night as a couple sat to my left, a family with children to my right. I enjoyed those two flavors as slowly as possible. A dream. Holy Fataorgasma Batman! Location: I think the neighborhood is still considered to be Monti but really, with all these tiny, winding streets, who the hell knows. The place: Tiny. More like a storefront, really, with no organized line. Take your spot and stand firm - Italians have no issues with bypassing you if you let them! Gelato: Fatamorgana is one if the top places to check out if you want authentic gelato sourced from local and organic ingredients. They have a few locations around town. I ordered the strawberry with almonds and Estasie. The strawberry/almond was amazing, with real strawberries and plenty of almonds. The Estasie was a combo of chocolate and coffee and other stuff that I cannot recall because I was too absorbed in the awesomeness of my gelato. They do offer many flavors so I'll have to go back often. Note: Gelato shouldn't be piled high in the displays - this means there's a lot of air in there to make it all poofy. As well, if the mint or pistachio are bright green and the banana is yellow, that gelato ain't authentic so go elsewhere. Price: 1€ pet scoop. Truly great. This was our second favorite gelato place. A little hard to find, but the flavors were worth it! So many to choose from, I had a little trouble deciding, but eventually got mint, milk and cookies and peanuts. The mint, milk and cookies tasted fresh and could see the small specks of mint. This place is the goods! Some of the best gelato in Rome, if not the world, and I've eaten enough gelato recently to be an authority on the matter! My partner had the soft fruit, which sounds boring, but tastes exactly like extremely ripe red fruit and was such an intense flavour. His second scoop (of which I tried also) was horseradish, which again was delicious and so exactly like horseradish it was quite bizarre. Gelato never usually tastes so much like what they're supposed to be based on, but these ones do. I had a scoop of hazelnut and pistachio and it was again incredible. Pistachio has to be up there with the best flavours of all time. They appear to run out of flavours in the late afternoon. We witnessed one Roman have almost a total breakdown as her favourite flavour wasn't there when she arrived, so get in early. 2.50 Euros for two small scoops in a waffle cone, then chill outside at the piazza afterwards with the locals. read more

There are a few things we missed while in Rome, like nachos and temperatures fit for life on Earth. But some things are ubiquitous, including gelato. Between Venice, Verona, and Rome we had gelato about a dozen times at maybe 10 different places, and Fatamorgana was my favorite. One example best demonstrates how good their gelato is; the mint chip had tiny bits of mint in it. Real mint. The green stuff. I've never seen that in gelato before; it's usually an extract. I know it's become a "foodie" cliche (God I hate that word), but this place uses fresh ingredients, and the result is an artisanal delight (that sounded pretentious too, sorry!). We visited the shop in the Monti neighborhood, and that was a bonus. Great location, great vibe to the neighborhood. We were amongst mainly locals, rather than a throng of tourists which was a nice change. So wherever you're staying in Rome, it's worth the short walk or cab ride to visit one of their shops. read more

Having tried Giolitti (all hype and touristy but very average flavors- I had to throw half of it away), Gracchi (decently good Gelato), Grom (my 2nd favorite- I liked the flavors and texture- although perhaps a little more fatty than Fatamorgana) ... I think the Fatamorgana gelato flavors are the best! The Location closer to Spagna is a tiny one, and not too busy, but it delivers in terms of quality! Fatamorgana can easily hold its own weight in a fight against the trendiest ice cream joints in the US. There are some pretty interesting gelato flavors here, and the flavors are incredibly potent - I was able to sample my family's gelatos from lavender to coffee to chocolate/lapsang souchong, and it's as if you're eating the actual food in gelato form. Some of them were a little perfume-y (especially the floral ones), but the coffee gelato is seriously too good to not try. I accidentally ordered sorbetto (I was confused as to why it was so icy until it dawned on me...), but the fruity blends were a perfect way to enjoy the cool Roman night breeze. I was pleasantly surprised at how nuanced all of the flavors were - you can taste the hints of ginger, basil - just really pleasantly refreshing. When in Rome, get gelato at Fatamorgana! We had a lot of gelato during our Europe trip, but no other shop had such unique and delicious flavors. The flavors were intense (all local/organic ingredients - you can taste the difference), and the gelato was just the right consistency. Even after tasting the first few that caught my eye, it was hard to narrow down my choices. I seriously just wanted to try them all! The rose petal with black rice and pistachio gelatos were my top two. I loved the texture that the black rice and pistachio pieces gave. Definitely not my favorite gelato place in Rome but worth trying! As it was fairly close to where we were staying, my family and I decided to walked here after dinner to try it out. I didn't realize that it was a "healthy" gelato store (gluten, egg, sugar, etc. -free) and so my expectations were pretty low (how can something sugar-free ever taste good?). The workers were friendly and there was an outside seating area in front of the store. I ended up getting a small cup (€2.50) which allowed for two flavors. I'm basic so I got vanilla and hazelnut. Like I said, it wasn't anything spectacular but still pretty tasty. I'd come back since it was so close by but I think you can get more for a better price elsewhere. read more

I bookmarked this place before heading to Italy and i did not realize how close it was from the Air bnb I stayed at on my last night in Rome. This place was the best gelato spot that I went to in Rome! They had so many flavors, I could not wrap my head around how it could be gelato! From carrot cake to blueberry cheesecake! The gelato is freshly made everyday with the freshest ingredients. The worker was very nice and laughed as we made it back a 2nd time in a matter of minutes. As she presented us with our last cup of gelato, she smiled and said, "See you tomorrow!" I wish that were the case. Absolutely DELICIOUS! I had vanilla creme, chocolate, and bronte pistachio on a cone. It was everything I was looking for and more. The flavors were creamy and rich...and the cone did not disappoint. My bf loved his too! As mentioned in other reviews, there's nowhere to sit inside but there are milk crates w cushions for you to sit on outside.
