Coming in here is like a kid coming into a candy shop. The pastries and desserts look so amazing you can't help but think about just buying everything in the store. Then you realize how empty your wallet would be and how you would gain an unspeakable number of pounds so you quickly push that thought away. The store is split into the bakery area and the cafe area, where they have afternoon teas, soups and sandwiches, and other savoury items. They have excellent macarons (and sell out quickly so it's better if you go in the morning), a wide variety of pastries that change depending on the day, and many loaves of bread at the back of the display case. I've tried the lemon tart, the double baked almond croissant, and various macarons, and have nothing bad to say about any of it. The lemon tart is quite sour, but there are sugar rocks on the side to make up for it, and there is a nice sweetness and balance to the custard during the aftertaste. I love almond croissants so really it's an automatic 10/10. would like to come back to try some more desserts and pastries (like a pistachio croissant!) and also their savoury dishes. Love love love Faubourg. The only place in the world that I've encountered a Pistachio Croissant, which is heavenly - flaky pastry, and the sweet-salty combination almost reminds me of sweet bean Asian pastries. I could eat this every day if my hips would allow. We've sampled and tested macarons at dozens of shops in at least 6 different major cities in the U.S., but Faubourg's ranks among the best. The meringue is delicate and light, the buttercream velvety and not cloyingly sweet. We tried the Faubourg signature, which I believe is a passionfruit flavor. We also had the strawberry black pepper - luscious berry flavor, but I didn't get as much of the black pepper as I had hoped, but still very good - and inventive - nonetheless. My favorite was the Earl Grey Lavendar. With a deep rich mocha, it was absolutely divine. I love the risks they take here. Truly French ;) read more

The atmosphere is lovely although a little cramped. But the bistro in the back with the pricey brunch and lunch menu items is gorgeous and feels like you've been transported into some French period piece. The servers are attentive and helpful. I find the baked goods kind of dry, but it seems others are raving about it. They also have nice carrying bags to take away fresh loaves of bread. Overall, I'm not too crazy about the food itself, but I like coming back for the lovely experience. read more

Surly counter person was still on shift, but this time I was received by someone friendly and attentive, yay! Had the pistachio croissant and lemon tart to go this time, so avoided the issue of the crammed dining area, but it wasn't too busy, as it wasn't the weekend. The croissant was delish, I loved how the pistachio mixture had a bit of density and creaminess to it. The lemon tart's shell and spongy meringue base was amazing- the only thing I didn't like was that they didn't use fresh lemon zest in the curd, just lemon oil and maybe some lemon juice. As well, they lined the domed curd with crunchy pearl sugar and it added nice texture to the dessert. I think their "viennoise" or breakfast pastries ordered for takeout are the way to go! read more

I went with a group of four girls in total, and we all had the Pink Afternoon tea (which is their "full service" afternoon tea). The selection of tea was small (and they had eitiher run out or discontinued one of the teas that was on the menu, which my friend had wanted to try). The food was good, though I agree with another review that commented on some of the bread being stale (or there wasn't enough sauce on the sandwich) but it still tasted fine. I had a fish bone in my salmon sandwich, but again, nothing too horrific. They did serve a dessert that was "time" sensitive, a souffle that would deflate if you didn't eat it right away, which I thought kind of interrupted the normal flow of afternoon tea (savory then sweet), but the dessert was delicious anyway. For a place that's supposed to have amazing treats, I'm surprised they didn't include any of their famous items like the chocolate croissants. I know one of the reviews made a comment about how boring the yogurt parfait was but I gotta say, I found it very refreshing with all the other strong flavors. I'm giving this place only three stars because while everything was "good" nothing really stood out as "great" like some other places with afternoon teas that are at the same price range. read more

The host/manager is awesome (main reason for the four star rating). Emailed my reservation but it didn't go through somehow but he still managed to conjure up a table for the party of four. The tea is average... The earl grey was really weak (something I have never seen before) and the food took a while to come out which was a little frustrating. All in all, probably not worth the $30 we each put in for the larger tea set. read more

Exquisite dessert and cute place! It's a great place to hand out with a good company for high tea or just get some sweet treats to go! Last week we had a girls party there for the afternoon tea. My friend living this neighborhood, so she recommended here. Since I walk in, I feel I am lost in the sweet clouds there. Smells so good! The food looks beautiful! We had a seat at the back and we ordered Pink to go with Marco Polo tea. The tea is light, go really good with salty of sweet! I don't remember the names what's in our order. I just remember I like everything. I just wish It can be bigger. The service was ok. At least she is not disturb you. I think I will turn to a regular customer! Want to try everything! read more

I came here for the macarons and some sweet treats. The macarons are kinda disappointing. But their tiramisu and hazelnut Napoleon are ok (even though the Napoleon, or mille feuille as they call it, was not all as crunchy as I want, the second and third layers are on the soggy side). The croissants however... Omg! Just the smell is enough to tempt me for another one. I tried the regular as well as the pistachio ones. Both are great with your morning cup of coffee or a simple glass of milk. Can't wait to try their almond flavor croissants! read more

Had high expectations from reading previous reviews so maybe the anticipation of trying this place dulled the actual experience. Tried the pistachio croissant($3.80), ham and cheese croissant ($3.45), and a decaf americano (about $2.75). Texture wise, croissants were spot on- crispy on the outside and soft inside. Wish the pistachio croissant had more flavor. OVERALL, everything tasted fine but not a standout compared to other places known for their croissants like Beaucoup, Sweetery bakery+cafe, Le Marche St. George, Matchstick etc. Faubourg may not be at the top of my preferred cafe list but it is a good place if you are looking for a reliable cafe with a nice ambiance and good selection of French baked goods. read more

Their pain du chocolat rivals the best we've had in Paris - flakey, almost crispy exterior, with a truly light and fluffy interior just popping with flavour. Their espresso is fantastic as well, although you may have to sip carefully as people may accidentally jostle you as they get to a seat in the cramped seating area. There's also a very French restaurant-within-a-restaurant concept in the back room with more space though, although we didn't see a hostess when we walked by. Perhaps the only negative is how they weren't able to import the same high level of service typically found in France. Perhaps it's just my over-sensitivity to hipster faux-derisiveness. Who knows? What's happened here? Hopefully this location of Faubourg just had an off day, but the wife came home with a box of pastries - pineapple croissant, apple/pear danish, something called a "cruffin" (hybrid croissant/muffin?)....totally disappointing! Nothing remotely represented the earmark of French pastry - où est le dreamy buttery melt-in-your-mouth sensation on first bite? Où est le flakiness that leaves your shirt front covered in delicious residue? We didn't even bother to finish these. (Oh, these 1st world problems!) These items were also left in the oven too long as the crusts were too dark, hard and chewy! No way Bâtard nor Daniel le Belge would have even put them out for sale in this condition! Don't be paying French pastry prices for these cheap supermarket goods...(using the term "goods" very loosely here...) And yeah, who in their right mind would order a "cruffin" anyway? read more

The service during my visit to the West Vancouver location and Kerrisdale location were less than adequate. To be fair the food they sell are satisfactory but not as good as Thomas Haas. I reached out to the company and I never hear from anyone. Fan based business like Faubourg will not make it far if customer services are sub par as such. read more

I came for brunch and was really underwhelmed. We sat in the back section which has nicer tables, but it was extremely loud and difficult to carry on a conversation. That in itself isn't a big deal, but combined with all the service issues, I didn't leave with a good impression. The server brought my tea without a spoon, so I had to stir in sugar with the butter knife. My mom's savory crepe was brought out cold, and they forgot to put dressing on the side salad, so it was just a pile of leaves. It took so long for my food to be brought out, that my mom ended up sharing hers with me, so that I could have something to eat. The table next to ours had the same experience, with such a gap between the two dishes being brought out, that they ate separately. The server did not once come back to refill my hot water or ask how everything was, but she did spend quite a lot of time chatting with another customer at such a high volume and high pitch that I could barely hear my mom from two feet away. read more

THE WORST service ever! No smiles, no greetings, not even "thank-you" even when the customer(me, for example) says "thank-you" Just blank expressions. It is unfortunate since the food is excellent. This review is for both the downtown and the Kerrisdale locations. I was quite excited to try Faubourg, as it's quite difficult to find French pastries in Vancouver that are anything like what you can find in, well, France. As it stands, the pastries here were fine -- not good, not terrible, just okay. What was very memorable, however, was the awful service at both locations. I was at the Kerrisdale location when it wasn't that busy. I was first spoken to by a very bored and disinterested woman who did not get all of my order together. I then spoke to a young man further down the line who barked at me impatiently and epitomized the words "snotty attitude" -- he was so busy being rude to me that he couldn't be bothered to listen to me about my order, but snapped that he knew what I wanted. I left the store, got a feeling that given how much attitude I was getting that they probably hadn't got it right, and checked my order. Of course, it was wrong. I went back and, without any apology or eye contact or anything other than rushed irritation, they "fixed" my order. At the downtown location, I called to check and see if they still had sandwiches available at 2 pm and the woman on the phone huffed and hung up on me. I don't know why people would go out of their way to be so obnoxious. And, after speaking with a couple of my friends, they echoed my complaints: "Ugh, I don't go there because the people there are so rude!" Why go to Faubourg for mediocre food and terrible service when you could go to Thierry or Thomas Haas or ANY other bakery in Vancouver where people are, I don't know, kinda polite? read more

Never coming back. Had 2 gift cards, one with $0 balance, one with $20 balance. Went there today to have lunch wanting to use up the $20 gift card. Cashier-in-training was on duty at the time. We had ordered 2 sandwiches and soups, then I gave the cashier-in-training both gift cards to pay. She had trouble getting the gift cards to scan on their system. She asked a colleague for help, and during this time both the gift cards were lost amongst their huge pile of gift cards sitting on the counter. They didn't know which gift card was ours. We complained and the manager came out and all he offered was to take down our phone number while he calls the gift card company to see what he can do. No apology at all for losing our $20 gift card! We left, furious, to find lunch elsewhere, and $20 gone. I also ordered a coffee in my own mug, so they had to give me the coffee. Next time if they give me a coffee, I would probably throw it away because it was pretty gross. read more

When this place first opened, I really enjoyed their croissants and macarons. The price was always pretty darn expensive but it was worth it at the beginning. Now, the taste of their breads has gone downhill and it's a bit of waste of money to spend 2 to 3 times more on mediocre bread and snacks when there're other fantastic bakeries nearby. I would say Faubourg is good for trying once or twice but after that there's nothing special it can offer. read more

Although the bakery is beautiful, the staff seem unknowledgeable and aloof. My coffee was bitter and stale tasting and soup had a very long hair in it. It also doesn't have wifi for its patrons in case you needed it. read more

We were traveling from the US and had reservations for tea at 3pm. Due to some staffing emergency, they cancelled our reservation and only left a message on our phone which wasn't turned on due to roaming charges. We were not able to find reservations elsewhere at the last minute. The whole thing really ruined our birthday plans. Wish they would have had the insight to email us which we can check via wifi and did frequently, or provide some other accommodation other than to contact another restaurant. They knew we were out of town from from our phone number. So disappointed. read more

Took my friend here last week for high tea for a going away lunch. The shop has a modern, sleek look, very high end with fancy wallpaper, crystal chandeliers, and interesting furniture (they have these beautiful chairs with a see through resin back with feathers inside) with a small private sitting area tucked at the back (about 5-6 tables) for tea/lunch. A few dollars more than Secret Garden down the street, but food quality is better, both taste and presentation wise. The desserts were not too sweet and luxurious tasting and look very pretty. Service however was not as warm and hospitable as the Secret Garden, a bit snooty. Take out boxes are very pretty and impressive to give as a gift. Would recommend for the croissants, and macarons in particular. read more

So after all this time of only buying cakes to go, I finally decide to have afternoon tea service here with my sister. And as far as the star rating goes A-OK is more than adequate to describe the food that came to $65 including tax and tip. My sister and I each had the Pink Afternoon tea package where we got to choose 4 savouries and 4 sweets. It also came with a small personal pot of strawberry souffle. There were 6 or 7 teas to choose from, and they let you smell the tea leaves to help with your selection. The savoury foods were okay, my favourite was the smoked salmon croissant. I wish it was bigger. The croissant was very miniature, probably the the length of 3/4 of my thumb only. It was the best two bites of the other savouries we got (chicken sandwich, quiche, beef bourgogne). The desserts were the same as what you would get from their beautiful glass cases, except the macaron we got with the set was underwhelming. Since it was my sister's birthday, the server was nice enough to plate up our souffles very nicely, and wrote happy birthday on the plate, and gifted us two extra macarons! It was a very nice touch on their part! I would love to give this place 4 stars, but the tea service was just a touch too mediocre to charge what we paid. Its a very charming little place and I will always come back for a pastry and a coffee, but it'll be the last tea service for me. You really only pay for the novelty of getting some petit finger sandwiches served in a two tier rack and sip tea with your pinky out. read more

Simple review : 1- food , ok but expensive. 2- service, questionable. I arrived at9 am a day before NY Eve and ordered Two croissants and two chocolate mousses. Total $18. Rip off anyone? But I expected the prices ; however, the pretty young staff kept smiling and talking with me BUT only got the croissants and NOT the mousse cake DESPITE ringing the entire amount in and charging me. Then she just stared at me with that fake smile. I had to ask for my cake order two times before she slowly got to it. Was she still asleep at 9 am or was there an alterior motive? I had these experiences before at McD and Safeway where extra items were charged but never provided so I am vigilant about these things. Perhaps I have the word SUCKER or DESPERATE on my forehead. BISTRO: the food was okay. service was mediocre. To start, the bread was absoltely hard. surprising after we saw the baker baking in the back, we wanted fresh bread. My partner had the duck and said it was really good. I had the eggs benny and it was a little too vinegary, probably form poaching the eggs. The hashbrowns were a little stale. The teapots were scratched up. the bread was stale. The highlight was definatley getting dessert. Wierd part is that i had to order from the cafe area and go back to your seat. It would be nice if there was an actual menu for more convenience. we had the blueberry tart which was simple, delicious and sweet, and the decadent chocolate mouse which had a dry brownie and a rich mouse with a snap bar on top. Overall, the simple one was better. CAFE: really really busy when we came in and took some orders to go on the way out. I had the chocolate croissant this morning and it was still fine. I would come back to order some more croissants for DIY brunch. read more

We had a 'croque monsieur' that was two pieces of toast with a slice of ham and cheese - not like any other we've ever had. The staff didn't know what a croque monsieur even was. The hot chocolate was lukewarm milk with cocoa powder sprinkled on top. The chocolate hazelnut croissant was hard as a rock - literally. We returned it and went across the street to Bean Brothers. Great baked good, so-so brunch food, service at the speed of a frail snail. First, to get it off the table, their baked items are excellent. As for brunch, avoid. Waited for 40 minutes after ordering to get the following: Lukewarm omelette, that was not terrible, a bit too salty and much too oily; came with a side of fruits that were cut few days ago and put in the fridge, so they were mostly inedible. Eggs Benedict, reported to be fine, but the potatoes that came with it were terrible. Another reviewer here on Yelp already noticed that. A "salad" : One piece of chicken and several whole lettuce leaves. Uncut. Come on, at least bother to cut the lettuce. Should not take a half-competent kitchen staff 40 minutes to make this so-so meal. But I guess that's what they have there. Again, their baked items are excellent: Had three pastries for dessert that were all very good. The waiter noticed the long long wait so we got four of their very good croissant for free. The food is overpriced for the mediocre dishes you get, however the setting is nice, so it might be worth the price for you. What really annoys me is how a chef/cook/owner who cares one bit about what he/she serves can serve such potatoes or fruit salad -- just terrible. Don't they taste what they serve ? read more
