One of my new fave bakeries! Franck, the French proprietor's impeccable taste for gourmet food is evinced as soon as you enter his classy establishment. And when you arrive to see him wiping tables--one knows that he takes his business and craft seriously. The cafe itself boasts a quaint Parisian ambiance and the petite back patio is as welcoming as any sidewalk cafe in Paris (but without the pocket-gouging prices). Order: pain au chocolat, quiche (every type) and the lemon tart for dessert. Each was absolutely divine. I would have appreciated just a bit more chocolate in the croissant (but this from a self-professed chocoholic) and the tarts were slightly darker in colour than I would have liked. Still, they were packed with ham and artichokes, and i devoured them without hesitation. They were the best quiche that I've found in a bakery, in fact. The lemon tart was deconstructed in a unique way with meringue on the bottom and while it was difficult to eat without breaking apart, it was divine. The latte was surprising just as good, and better than any than I'd had in the area. Finally, a bakery that knows how to make a strong coffee, too. This is now my number one stop in Kerrisdale, as long as I can time it right to snag a seat. It can get quite busy, especially on weekends. It easily rivals T. Haas for baked goods, but with an environment more pleasing for lingering. Make sure you check it out and you won't be disappointed. It's Macaron Day again and I've yet again to purchase more of these delicious delicacies of Paris. Didn't want to overload on the sugar in my diet so I got 6 instead of the usual dozen. As I stepped in the wee early morning, no one greeted me or acknowledge my presence. The two ladies kept on chatting with each other. I asked her if I could get some macarons she said yes but nothing after. I then asked if I should be ordering where the macarons are displayed or at the register. Only then did she gesture me towards the register. She rung up my order of six and told me to go around the back. Huh? What? Did I miss something? Still confused I walked around to the back as instructed. There were two ladies waiting for me with a selection of 6 flavours. I showed my receipt and they told me to pick the flavours I wanted. I immediately noticed the flavour of the month wasn't there and asked if we could only pick from the 6 or could we get the other flavours from the front. They told me it was just from the 6 and the others might be an extra charge. The lady came back with no real answer but subsided when I told her I prefer to try other flavours as I've already tried the 6. I chose two from the back and she allowed me to get the rest from the front and I was content. As expected the ones from the back were freshly made and the ones at the front were probably yesterday's batch. But since it's me that insist on getting the flavours at the front, I can't blame them for not tasting as superb. The two I got from the back was of good quality. read more

POOR. RUDE. WORST. I don't normally post but this is too terrible. Everything was fine until I spotted a skinny dark skinned guy being unsanitary. And the EXTREMELY POOR attitude manager (Asian barista with glasses and relatively short hair). So this guy was wearing gloves. He wiped a table with a wet cloth and went back to the counter to put macarons into the box for a customer wearing the SAME gloves. The creases on the gloves were the same! I was not sure if he was wearing the same gloves at that point. So I watched him after. Soon after there was a girl spilled a cup of water at the window table. I SAW him leaving the counter to the back alley to grab a cleaning tool, still wearing the same gloves. He cleaned the floor and also wiped the window area with a kitchen towel. He went to the staff/ kitchen room. I went to the entrance door so that I could see him whether he would change the gloves or not. OH MY GOODNESS! He started making a sandwich without changing the gloves. So I immediately asked for a manager. I explained this all above. She said he was new so she would train him not to. She put a very blunt face and did not look sorry at all. I explained how I was disgusted and I was shaking after I saw it. She just said sorry. Since she did not offer me first, I asked for a refund. She said since she made the coffee there is no need to refund. Like WHAT? A customer is asking for a refund because the whole store was unsanitary. I said there was a big fly flying around and landed on croissants. She just said sure, she could change all the bread for me. NO that's not what I asked for.. Now at this point, I was very disappointed at the extremely poor service and attitude from the manager. I like this cafe and I do care about service so I just wanted to let her know. I did not think of asking for a refund initially. But how she dealt with the whole situation was just so RUDE. I could not believe how the manager dealt with this and I was so angry. I saw the guy at the back changing the gloves and the manager was talking to him. But come on, this is not a shady restaurant/ cafe. This is a charming bakery! The decor and ambiance makes you feel like a princess. However, I tried their passion fruit mousse cake which I had seen on Instagram and immediately wanted to try but it was not amazing. Too sweet for my taste though the presentation was top notch. I don't think I would come back but at least I got some nice Instagram pictures. read more

I was here for brunch recently and chose to sit in the back for table service. Bad idea. Other than the delicious croissant my food was overall disappointing. The Benny was only okay (lukewarm) but the potatoes accompanying it were terrible. Barely lukewarm and chewy. And when I asked for some ketchup to try and make them seem a bit more edible, the ketchup came straight out of the fridge and was ridiculously cold. We also waited and waited and waited for the waiter to bring us our bill - which was ultimately asked for. I'd highly suggest sticking with the front pastry options and espresso drinks. Kerrisdale = Montparnasse, Paris? Mais ce pas possible! Lovely little boulengerie pattiserie. Delicious croissants and chausson aux pommes. The afternoon sunlight shone in, making it golden. The place was just at the point of being cozy, not packed. We took our goodies to go. Next time we hit Paris, oops Kerrisdale we are def. staying in. KEY POINT: when enjoying croissants for breakfast next day, heat oven to 375, let them get nice, warm and crispy. Fabulous, Fantastic Faubourg If you love Paris like I do, you'll love Faubourg! You feel like you were whisked away to a busy cafe in Paris. The decor is modern which I love with it's airy ceilings and beautiful marble wrapped walls and counters. Faubourg is truly a French Patisserie. 2 things give them my 5 stars: 1- They are one of the ONLY places in Vancouver to still serve and carry my favourite tea: Mariage Frères - from Paris. (MF tea is not only fragrant but actually backs up the scent with a perfectly balanced flavour. This is the only tea that I have found to be consistent whether its a black, green, white, red, fruit tisane or herbal blends.) 2- The Croissants are the best in the city - I had a Chocolate Croissant that was just melt in your mouth flaky. Seriously - the best I have had here in Vancouver. We had great service and a fun conversation with the staff. Save up for the week and then treat yourself to Faubourg! read more

3.5 stars. Gorgeous french bistro in Kerrisdale! The owner is lovely... Faubourg is normally open during the day only for casual meals/coffee/brunch, but one of my colleagues convinced them to open for a private function and do dinner for us! They put in amazing effort and the food was delicious. Presentation points galore! Fresh vaggies and fruity drinks during cocktails, then we had a series of 5 courses (mini-sized). Salad and bread (very fresh), funny little liquids/dips in cups, then a variety of skewers of prawns/veggies, ratatouille and veal, and finally a mini-dessert plate with lemon and chocolate tarts, eclairs, wafers, and more!! The pastries/desserts esepcially are FABULOUS. My only concerns are the TINY portion sizes (I was seriously still starving after dinner... the mini-sized multi-courses were cute but 2 pieces of veal per person was not enough!) They're also new to serving dinner so there were definitely some kinks - drinks running low and food was definitely coming out slowly between the courses. Went for High Tea on Sunday at three with a group of friends. Several of us asked for the same item, only to be told that the single remaining one had been taken by the first person in our group. We were served a single scone each, even though the menu stated that we would get two each. When we challenged the waitress about this we were told that they had run out of scones as well. It's really loud here - terrible acoustics, even though it wasn't fully packed. I ended up sitting out on their few patio seats, enjoyed my grapefruit mousse tart. It was studded with sugar crystals, gave it a nice crunch. The tart crust was pretty difficult to break apart with a fork though. The pistachio croissant was unique - similar to Persian desserts with rose flavours. Overall, a nice place to take a break on a sunny afternoon. read more

With a forgettable visit to the Blenz Coffee on Robson Street providing a quick caffeine fix on day three of Vancouver but the rest of the day focused on Chinese, Cambodian, and Indian cuisine our last pasty experience in Vancouver would be on the day of our departure - breakfast at Faubourg Paris, a small patisserie and cafe in Kerrisdale where unlike Thierry the ambiance truly is Parisian not just in looks but in service and style. Bright, modern, pleasant, and served up with lingering notes of butter in the air and servers (including the owner himself) sporting hefty French accents I knew on entry that Faubourg was going to be the sort of place that spoke to me - and that was before we even saw the pastry case. Greeted by both the owner and a young woman at the counter as we browsed the selections - many having just come off the bakers rack - my family deferred to my selections and with most of the options familiar I selected the things I knew we all loved along with a couple of novel selections and two Americanos plus a tea that were all plated individually, placed on trays, and carried to our table by the owner (he would also not allow me to bus my own table later on insisting "non, non, non, go and enjoy the day.) Beginning first with the coffee, again watered down espresso but vastly more subtle than that at Thierry or Thomas Haas, the blend at Faubourg certainly isn't going to win any awards but at the same time it was a nice morning cup that served its purpose and went well with the pastries - the first of which was a nicely crafted Pain aux Raisin with a soft and buttery crumb beneath a slightly crisp exterior flecked with large rocks of sugar and plump raisins - a nice changeup from the usual and particularly enjoyed by my aunt. Moving next to its tray-mate, my requisite order of an Almond Croissant would prove to be the first non-double-baked one of the trip but unfortunately it would also prove to be a bit uninspired with the exterior not quite crisp enough and the interior not quite wispy or open enough - almost as though it was undercooked, though I will say the taste was quite pleasant with butter and almond essence in good balance. Moving next to the tray largely reserved for my mother and sister, the pairing of a Butter Croissant and a Pain au Chocolate would prove to be as classic as it gets and while the almond croissant did not meet my admittedly high standards both of these showed Faubourg's skill with aplomb as a crisp golden shell crackled with each bite while the interiors of each remained light, cavernous, and loaded with buttery notes. Generally underwhelmed by Pain Au Chocolate as many seem to lack enough ganache I will additionally note that the version at Faubourg stood out both for the quality and quantity of the chocolate - two separate cores providing plenty of flavor without overwhelming the subtleties of the pastry. For the final plate of the morning and our last bites of Vancouver a tray featuring a "Chocolate Twist" and a Cannele would provide a fitting end to a great trip as the twist would feature a similar golden exterior and soft buttery crumb to the Pain aux Raisin but up the ante by adding a creamy custard woven in and dark chocolate chips opposing the crunchy flecks of sugar. Not quite a croissant, not quite a Danish, almost like a pretzel, and an absolute must order. Moving next to the Cannele, in a word, perfect - a crunchy golden shell, a moist custard interior, plenty of eggy flavor tinged with butter, and just a bit of sweetness...a contender for the top 5 all time and a reason to head to Kerrisdale bright and early as there were only a dozen available when we arrived. read more

Came here for afternoon tea with two of my girl frds on New Years Eve. Not bad of a place. No complaints about it. menus were cute. Although It would be nice if they had more tea choices. But I assume afternoon tea wasn't their main feature. When I wanted to purchase some macorons to take home, they were only left with a few to choose from. I don't stop here very often, but when I do, I must have pain au chocolat. It's my favourite, and one of the few yard sticks by which I measure a bakery. Can't make tasty croissant? Can't have my business. Their pains au chocolat are diviiiiine. So flaky and buttery and awesome. Sigh. They're close to my notary public's office, so when I bought my house, I stopped in here and having a pastry or two was *almost* enough to take away the sting of my giant mortgage. But today would be our last time to come because the service was so bad specially the cashier staff who was so rude with sour face and didn't bring our pastries order after warmed up to the table and when I told her every time we're here the staff brought the pastries to our table but she said they don't do table service but we saw the other staff brought the order to the table. The cashier actually got my tea latte wrong because he thought I said "petite" latte. Switched my order with no hesitation. The days of the empty display case are long gone: Faubourg's window provides a feast for the eyes, which is the idea, after all, to entice you inside for the real feast. Seating space is limited during peak hours -- which can be any morning, lunch, or afternoon -- but often I'm just grabbing a little somethin' to go. The $1.79 MACARONS are moderately priced (and moderately sized -- they seem 'daintier' than most others) but the flavors are distinct, real, and balanced. I love the mango-tangerine-ish flavor of the Faubourg Signature Macaron, as well as the deep fruitiness of the Cassis and the savory stickiness of the Salted Caramel. Actually, they're all good. The croissants feel expensive at nearly $4 each, but I can certainly call to mind many other bakeries that charge the same. (Heck, try getting a pastry at Starbucks...) The PAIN AU CHOCOLAT is fairly standard, though I must have it from time to time, but something neater is the PISTACHIO CROISSANT. If you're eating these at home, be sure to warm them up in the toaster oven. read more

I really really wanted to love this place. All the pastries and sweets looked so beautiful and delicious, the smells coming from the kitchen were amazing, and most of the staff were lovely and trying so hard.... On the day I visited it was super packed and almost impossible to find a seat as most of them were being "reserved" for some political event. Luckily my friend snagged us a couple of window seats, and I went up and ordered for us - a nonfat latte & cappuccino, some sort of twisted pastry stick and a roast beef sandwich. The barista was clearly overwhelmed. After I nicely informed her that there had been a mistake with my order, she snapped back "Are you sure that's what you ordered?" When we finally got the right drinks, they were both good. The twisted pastry was outstanding! However, the sandwich was basically two pieces of dried bread with a very hard chewy piece of roast beef inside. I'm giving Faubourg 2* for now. However, I haven't completely given up on this place, and will re-evaluate once I've had the chance to sample their high-tea and croissants given some of the other rave reviews. read more

If you love croissants and little pastries dropped down from heaven then step into a small piece of it on earth! On a sunny Saturday afternoon after getting our shopping fix at Hills we decided to check this out. The decor is French chic with a classic chandelier in the back area. The front looks more like a cafe than a bistro but my brain was cloudy by the deliciousness of the pastries. If you have been reading my reviews you know that I have a thing for French things, be it cafe, food or decor so perhaps I'm slightly biased. The white decor reminds me of Cafes you would find in La Defense area of Paris not your typical traditional decor. We sat by the window to complete the French experience with their national sport, people watching. I ordered the Pistachio croissant with some white sugar on top that transported me back to sweet heaven for a few minutes. The fluffy dough is filled with pistachios which are not cheap as I should point out being a "nut girl". Today is National Macaron Day and I am so thankful for Faubourg's 50% off macarons. On normal days, each macaron is $2. They had two options but I only remember, for 9 macarons, it was $18. Today I got my macarons for $9. I love all their flavours and they never fail to disappoint. I haven't tried any of their pastries but I tried their Eggs Benny and it was good. Their afternoon tea consist of miniature pastries seen on display and they gave me a miniature lychee souffle. I love their Marco Polo tea. Overall, everything is reasonable price but I always resist myself from driving there because it does add up. read more

Faubourg is definitely the best place for dessert on 41st street. Even if you're strict with your sweets intake like I am, you won't regret treating yourself here. THE MUST HAVES: Butter croissant (one of the best in Vancouver) Baguette (PERFECT for sandwiches) Canale de bordeaux (they're like portable versions of crème brûlée -- soo good) Berry tart (the custard cream and crust are divine) Caffe mocha (it has a hint of hazelnut flavor to it -- yum) DONOTWANT: Afternoon tea -everything was way too rich and sweet, especially the raspberry chocolate mousse. At first glance, people don't realize that Faubourg has a tea shop the back. You have to go through the bakery to get there, but I don't mind as I get to look at all the colorful macaroons and the appetizing cakes so that by the time I get to my table, I am starving and very eager to start the high tea. I went there for a mini-club event organized by Finer things in Life, a sub-club of the UBC Food Society. 19 of us showed up that day, so needless to say, we took the whole cafe. I like how we were separated from the bakery because it can get noisy with customers coming and going. This way, noise is contain in the bakery and we got to enjoy our high tea in the peace and quiet of the tea shop. When everyone got there, we were served our tea. I ordered the Marco Polo which is their fruity tea. I have never been a big tea fan, but I had to admit I liked this one. It was sweet and very enjoyable. The trays of desserts also followed and it was delicious. The staff at Faubourg were nice enough to accommodate the fact that I was a pescatarian and gave me three smoked salmon croissant instead of the chicken and the beef sandwiches. I was lucky because everyone admitted that the smoked salmon croissant was the best and I got three of them instead of one. :) The desserts and the scones were also very nice. The scone came with the traditional cream and a mini jar of raspberry jam. The jam was made by Bonne Maman, the French brand of jam and it always brings back good memories of the time I spent in France. The scone was fluffy and with the cream, just succulent. The desserts were delicious too. We got a raspberry mousse, a chocolate opera, a lemon tart, a earl Grey lavender macaroon, a dessert that looked like cream inside a chocolate cup and a cream-puff looking dessert with no cream inside. The desserts were all beautiful and delicious. My favorite was the scone but I was pleasantly surprised by the macaroon since I could actually taste the lavender in it. The service was fast and efficient. I discovered that our server was from Barcelona, so we are basically neighbors. Yeah to Europeans in Canada!!! :) I paid 32$ including taxes and tip. It was a bit pricy on a student budget, but it's normal for high tea. I also need to treat myself before I say bye to my social life when exams start. A French pastry high tea boutique cafe that we tried it at a busy Sunday. The place looks clean although it is not too cosy. The choice of the pastry was limited maybe because it was busy. The macchiato and hot chocolate are excellent and so are the pastries. The French owner is pretty friendly on the contrary to the serving lady who looks quite cold. It is worth having a coffee and a croissant there. With a more welcoming staff, a French background music and different furniture (Maybe because most of customers are Chinese, the interior has been designed too polished), this would look a perfect place to go. read more

Stopped in here for a bit as Ajisai Sushi Bar (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/ajisai-sushi-bar-vancouver) was already closed for the afternoon. I had a pain au chocolat and a strawberry tart. The pain au chocolat was deliciously buttery and flaky and the chocolate inside was rich and not too sweet. The strawberry tart was in a buttery shortbread-like crust with creamy vanilla custard and perfectly ripe strawberries. Definitely the best I've had outside of France. Their brioche and baguettes are wonderful as well. I'm not sure about the sandwiches; they don't appear to be very filling and are rather expensive (I believe it's $4.95 for half/$8.95 for a whole one). It is pricey here (the pain au chocolat was $2.80 and the strawberry tart was $5.50) but they use quality ingredients making this place a worthwhile treat when you feel like indulging. read more

Came here for high tea based on some of the reviews I read. I would agree that the food here is good. The macaroons were done just right and the bakery samples I had were right up there. I would say the food was a solid 4 stars. Why 3 stars then? Well, there were a few real bad no-no's for a restaurant: While seated, the waiter set up the table with cutlery and small plates. The plates looked as if they were used. The waiter noticed it and immediately went to get another two. The plates he returned with also looked used or badly cleaned as there were oily smudges and bits of crumbs on them. Next, when I was looking forward to sloshing on some jam on my scone, the tiny personal size jam jar they had on the high tea plate was used. There were crumbs and cream inside it. I grabbed the other that was on the plate and...it was also used! Ick! So, some words of wisdom...better check the cleanliness of everything before you dive into your tasty food! This place has been in my neighbourhood for a few years but I only stopped by for the first time a few days ago. I only ordered items to go, but the service was still excellent - friendly, and swift. The ham and cheese croissants were delicious with a nice crusty baked cheese top, and the cheese scones were also very good. The macarons were a bit hit and miss; I got a selection (dark chocolate, pistachio, salted butter caramel, Tahitian vanilla bean, hazelnut praline). The dark chocolate was bitter and very flat - perhaps a bad batch. The pistachio tasted like marzipan (aka not good) - the other three, however, were delicious. All in all, a good experience. Back of the restaurant is a bistro for brunch and high-tea. High tea at Faubourg offers a selection of elegant treats, seasonal flavours and a selection of sandwiches and scones. While I may not fancy to drink my tea "pinky out" and I'm more caffeinated over coffee beans than Darjeeling I do enjoy the variety of petite bite size treats and a selection of teas. Sample and inhale your tea selection prior to choosing the best contender. Sultane Ceylan, Vert Provence, Bourbon French Vanilla, etc. The selection of tea was not just your average Lipton tea bags. Selections carried came from Mariage Frères. The tea is fragrant and flavorful - creamy rich and not watered down (also served here click). There is something for everyone whether you are a green tea, red tea, or a herbal non-caffeinated lover. Choose from Pink Afternoon Tea ($25.50) or Purple Afternoon Tea ($16) a petite set menu. Because we always love variety, Pink is the way to go. Smoked Salmon and Wasabi Cream - Freshness of salmon with a slight kick or wasabi Chicken and apple with country ranch herb dressing - Sweetness of apple lightens a plain tasting chicken. Cucumber and Roast beef with coriander cream - A meaty twist of cucumber sandwich with savory taste of roast beef. I liked this one more than the regular cucumber stuff sandwiches. Scones served with Devonshire Cream and jam - light buttery scones paired with Devonshire cream is delicious. Fruit Soufflé: Blood Orange - Delish and sinful. Tart and light. I almost wanted to fight for my friend's also. Mini lemon tart - a mini version of their signature dessert. Creamy tart lemon curd on top vanilla milk foam on a flaky tart shell Mini Opéra - A rich decadent chocolate cake. Slightly overwhelming. Perhaps more suited for a coco lover. Chocolate mousse - a smooth coco mousse. Pretty standard. Parfait - A tart yogurt parfait with fresh berries and a granola crumble. It's a nice in between sweets palate cleanser Chocolate Truffle - A rich bite size coco truffle. Don't underestimate the chocolaty richness because of its size. Please always remember to make reservations, especially as it comes closing to the holiday season. Faubourg is busy and getting a seat is not always easy. Would I go back, - Yes, if you have a craving for macarons why not go right to the source? - a French bakery, with pastry chefs trained to execute the perfect confection. If it was not for the distance to travel I would be back here all the time. To get my bread fresh and enjoy all the foods, drinks and sweets they have to offer. I love the area and dessert shops like this. Would I recommend it? - Yes. "Faubourg" is located in a great location with ample meter parking. They have friendly staff, who are very knowledgable on what their shop has to offer. They also have a fun feature where they offer a bread and a dessert of the month.
