This venue is close to our home, so we visit there often. Love their sandwich selections and salad offering. I especially recommend their creamy chicken toast with salad. Its taste is absolutely out of this world. Service is very personal and efficient and ambiance is clean and tidy. read more

The reviews for this place seem to be rather polarized, likely due to conflicting expectations. If you are just looking for a place to quickly and cheaply get caffeinated, you will probably be better served elsewhere. If you are a coffee connoisseur, you will appreciate it more. There's a variety of single-origin coffees on offer, available siphon brewed or pour-over. I went with a medium-light roast of dry processed beans from Kaffa; it was well-prepared and the beans were skillfully roasted by the proprietor. Jason is very enthusiastic about coffee and will happily engage on the intricacies of the entire process, from beans to cup, I have no doubt this establishment is a labor of love. There are also desserts made in-house, my Basque Cheesecake was quite good. The cafe is fairly small and charmingly furnished with real hardwood tables and chairs. Drinks and snacks are served in fine porcelain. I'm not sure this is the kind of place you'd visit everyday, but if you wanted to have a light lunch/spend an afternoon with a friend and appreciate some fine coffee together, this is a good locale. My family found this hidden gem in the center of Kerrisdale, and if you love drinking coffee (not fake coffee like lattes and all that none sense but true black coffee) this place is a MUST. My review is on the Matcha Red Bean mousse. Not overly sweet, beautiful texture and with my first bite, I wanted more. Then, I thought...oooh! Wouldn't mind a whole cake next time. Tl;dr - Would recommend small groups (2-4 people). Definitely get the Jasmine Iced Coffee (very unique), and their pastries are the perfect dessert after lunch/dinner at Ajisai. Having passed by this cafe several times before on my way to dim sum nearby, I was attracted by the beautiful decor & made it a point to stop by someday. The interior of this place is lovely. Lots of coffee-related paraphernalia (such as coffee press machines) displayed all over the spacious and gently lit cafe. The lunch/dinner menu offers combos of homemade soup + sandwich/panini, or salad. There were only 2 kinds of soup available, so we decided to try both the Seafood Chowder, and the French Onion soup. For the combo, we chose the Prosciutto & Mozzarella sandwich, and the Black Forest ham panini to go with our soups. I also ordered a Green Tea Coffee (Is it tea or coffee? Or both? Read on to find out..) The food didn't take long to arrive - first came the piping hot homemade soups. Portion sizes were rather small, but both the soups were delicious! The French Onion soup was hearty and flavourful, with lots of gooey cheese. The Seafood Chowder had a good variety of seafood in it (shrimp, fish, squid, etc) and a very rich, not-overly-creamy taste to it. I loved it! The Prosciutto & Mozzarella sandwich arrived actually looking more like a salad than a sandwich. There were 2 slices of toasted bread cut into 4 mini triangles, topped with a fair bit of salad. Most of the ingredients were actually on top of the bread rather than in it. Taste-wise, it was just alright, nothing particularly special. I must say though, it was an interesting way to serve a "sandwich". The Black Forest ham panini came with a side of salad. I actually really loved this panini! The panini bread was toasted to a crispy perfection, and filled with a good portion of ham, cheese, and lettuce. I've had other paninis before elsewhere but this place definitely does it right. The Green Tea coffee was quite a let-down, unfortunately. The description in the menu made me curious to try this "delightful encounter of the East and the West", a mix of matcha & full-bodied coffee. What arrived in a tiny china cup (no bigger than a standard tea cup) was merely a slightly bitter & thin-tasting coffee topped with lots of whip cream & matcha powder sprinkled on top. I'm not exactly a coffee connoisseur, but I can tell when coffee is blah. No matcha taste in the coffee here (aside from the matcha power on top), sorry folks. So that was $7 for a blah coffee with a fancy description, in a tiny but cute china tea cup. Service was friendly and ambience was definitely a plus. The soups and panini were worth their snazzy cafe pricing (small-ish portions for a higher price), but I can't say the same for the sandwich or the coffee. I'm hovering between 3 and 4 stars, so I'll probably be back again because I'm curious to try their desserts and perhaps afternoon tea service too. La Cuisson Café was located at Union Square, Richmond for long time and they have been moved to Kerrisdale almost 2 years. The coffee shop was much bigger than previous location and the décor look extraordinary still... They sever the medium to fine coffee (such as Blue Mountain and Kopi luwak/civet coffee) and home-made desserts natural ingredients, no chemical involved. I would say the best coffee experience you can find it here... Fine/Siphon is so good. My mom had Blueberry yogurt tea + mini pecan tart, the first zip I tasted a bit sour of yogurt and blueberry flavour. Taste funny... but, my mom loved it. I had Royal coffee + chocolate cake, I loved cognac+ coffee+ brown sugar when it served and burnt it up the cognac. So cool! The chocolate cake pretty good and light. If you want to treat yourself for fine coffee, this is a right place to go. Just don't let price scare you away... read more

I found this hidden jem by chance after I had sushi dinner next door. This was a really great surprise for me. The interior looks great with a relaxing atmosphere with chic furniture and so on. It is particularly worth noting that they care for the coffee they make, and their coffee was exquisite. Servers and a guy that seemed to be the owner here were very nice and tried to help us have a great time with their coffee. I was walking by and saw this little coffee shop tucked inside one of the streets of Kerrisdale. From the outside, it looked pretty quiet with only one customer....me. The interior looked like one of those tea/ coffee shops with little artistic pastries. Lots of good things about this place, but it is on the pricey side. A caramel latte was around $8 and with a gingerbread cookie, it was $10. However, the coffee was good. I'd probably check this place out once in a while with some girlfriends for dessert/ coffee on a special occassion. read more

I overlooked this place for so long, assuming that it was just another fancy-looking cafe, but when I finally did order a coffee, it far exceeded my expectations. The owner is very knowledgeable and deeply passionate about great coffee. All of the beans are freshly roasted on-site, and watching them make your coffee in the siphon is well worth the wait. I don't usually order food, so I can't comment on the pastries, but if you're looking for an outstanding cup of coffee made by people who genuinely care about each cup, this is the place to go. read more

It reminds me of La Petite Cuillère but I'm inclined to believe that the pastries in La Cuisson are in-house. The pastries are on the higher-end of pricing. I sampled their macarons and found them decent and relatively fresh. I've yet to try their cakes. I found their Lorraine quiche tasty and also relatively fresh. I may be the only one but hearing the microwave oven for my quiche is sort off-putting in a try-hard classy café. However, I would come back to sample their siphon coffees and the specialty teas (although I'm keeping my expectations low). I find it a bit odd that they have cutoff times for serving homemade soup. These times are too early (11a-2p) and considering the cold weather, it should be longer... if they want more profit anyway. The teacups looked cute but the Roger granulated sugar packets and the cheap serviettes make a jarring contrast to their fancy plates and cutlery. The service is slow and very frustrating for a non-Mandarin speaker. Why are there two different menus with the same items? When there are two menus, why aren't the items consistently listed in both (the quiche pies aren't in the book, and the pastries are listed in neither menus)? Also, my specialty mocha took over ten minutes to reach my table. The door was ajar and the listed temperature for that afternoon was -1 celsius. I went into the café to warm up and instead, I felt the draft creep in. I sound frustrated but I would come back if I hear that the service has improved. read more

Pricey for regular coffee. This cafe specializes in siphon coffee. I've had siphon before, but not from here. I was actually expecting other forms of coffee prep but I was wrong. They only have siphon or espresso/americano. The shop is quaint, and has a nice charm to it. They serve desserts and other treats that you would find at other cafes. That said, expect to pay minimum $6 for a cup of siphon coffee that is roughly the volume of an English tea cup made of bone china. I'm guessing it is roughly 175-200mL for one cup at $6. I had a Kenyan bean for take out. They were expecting me to sit in, but I didn't. All patrons were Asian. I was looking for something that was low acidity. The girl didn't know what I was talking about. That's OK, she was ESL. I ended up going through their coffee menu and I read all of the descriptions. I wasn't going to get what I wanted. Everything was going to be bright, fruity, with a bit of acidity. That's how I ended up with the Kenyan bean. The coffee itself was OK. It was fruity with bright citrus notes, and very slightly acidic/sour. Would I do this again? No. I've tried siphon coffee twice now, and to me, it's a novelty/gimmick - something you would find on late night TV,(think Shake Weight), and not worth the price. However, I would come again for desserts and stuff, but for coffee, only an americano, not siphon. read more

Had a late lunch here with 2 other people and I must say that we did not have a pleasant experience Food: 3/5, ordered their tuna salad with strawberry on the side and not only were the portions small but the scoop of tuna they put on your plate had more of the onion, cream and mayo base than the actual tuna. Price: 2/5 overly priced for such small portions, I would not recommend this place if you are hungry. Service: 3/5 this is the reason why I'm writing this review. As one of my friends already had lunch she said she was just gonna share but we were told that to stay in the cafe everyone must order. We all just agreed and my friend asked for more time to think about her order, what I found terrible was how we were pressed to order and to do it quickly. It was all just disappointing. this place totally reminds me of cafe savoureux in richmond, with the try-hard vintage ~classy~ style they try to pull, and the presentation of desserts (lol) i ordered the trianon cake (or royal chocolate cake), which is a rich chocolate mousse topped on a thin layer of sponge, then a crispy praline. i like that it isnt overly sweet. as for the tea, its served on a pot over a burner. nice! the server coming to offer a hot water refill is a thumbs-up. teacups are genuine royal albert (although theyre a bit worn out). the waffle plates are pretty pricey (im comparing to beard papas) but the portions are huge so come with a friend. overall not bad! good place to sit down and chat. read more

I first wanted to try their combo's but after a closer look it's not really much of a deal. It's about 1 dollar off. So I decided to just get the panini and a drink of my choice. I ordered: -Prosciutto and Mozzarella Panini ($10.95-5/5): It comes with a small side salad. The panini was tasty. You can tell they used premium ingredients. -Rainbow iced coffee ($6.50-3.5/5): The coffee is their own special blend... which the barista didn't want to disclose. That's fine. So what makes it a rainbow iced coffee? It's coffee with ice cream and several syrups. I didn't like whichever syrup it was that sunk to the bottom. It gave my drink an awful taste. Overall, service was good and the food was good. Just the price is a bit high for a regular lunch spot. read more

This place is absolutely wonderful. I was first introduced here by a friend who insisted that this place has the best desserts. I, however, was not a huge fan of sweets and resorted to their Siphon coffee and later one macaroon. They have a large selection of specialty coffee, all of great quality, including Kopi Lewak. The owner is usually around in the afternoon. He has a passion for coffee and is, obviously, very knowledgeable of coffee. Apparently, all the desserts sold at the shop are made by his wife. Usually quiet. Does feel like a restaurant sometimes more than a cafe, which is typical of Asian-run cafes. I once stayed there for over two hours alone and received great service, so I guess it's still a cafe to some degree. read more

If you like Siphon Coffee, this is the place to be. They have many rare type of coffee and also the super expensive Malaysian Cat Processed Beans (Kopi Lewak) - at $65 They do have a $10 special for coffee and dessert, they give you the smallest dessert in the case and there is no substitution if you want the Panacotta or Cheesecake. The siphon coffee Blue Mountain,etc is slightly bigger than Expresso size. Not worth the $$ at all. They do offer free Wifi. read more

"Precious": If I had only one adjective to use to describe the place that would be it, with all its good and bad connotations. The atmosphere is precious in a good way. Cute Victorian furnishing, well-appointed tables, little gem of a location. The staff is also a little "precious" in a sort of condescending-with-a-language-barrier sort of way. They happily took our order and then made it very clear that we had to be out of there in 10 minutes when they were closing. They have a very nice selection of coffee and cakes. I didn't try the cakes, but my friends quite liked them. The serving size was "precious" in a bad way. They serve what must be about 230 ml (8 oz) of coffee from their siphon. It was the smallest portion I've ever seen at the price of $6. I love siphon prepared coffee, but somehow they prepared it in no time. The quality of the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe was lower than what I would expect for such a dear (expensive), precious (small) serving. Anyway, pretty underwhelmed by a pretty pricey experience. It's an interesting take on coffee. They do siphon coffee which is a bit esoteric these days, although I do see it at a few places here and there. It has an old school, aristocratic feel, like what you might see in japanese anime when they try to depict europeans. Or at an antique store or a *cough* *cough* thrift store. There's a curated menu of coffee blends from regions around the world, including jamaican blue mountain (which they will try to upsell you on) and indonesian kopi lupak, the famous civet-digested coffee beans. I'm personally against kopi lupak because of the associated stories of animal cruelty and fake beans. Coffee is served black; you have to ask for cream separately, which comes in the tiniest pitcher I've ever seen. Basically like a toy smidgen. I also like the coffee paraphernalia on display. I haven't seen some of those espresso makers before. They also roast coffee on site and they have afternoon/high tea. I give it only 3 stars because I personally don't like this style of coffee. But I realize some people appreciate it more than I do. read more

Very unique cafe. The ambience of the cafe reminds me of Jyun-Kissa (cafe that specializes in cafe, and doesn't serve alcohol. It also refers to a cafe that is retro-style ) in Japan. I like how they have good selection of coffee such as blue mountain coffee, kopi luwak coffee, ice coffee, Irish coffee etc. etc.....I cannot get it else where. . I got ice-coffee and I loved it . Not sure if I'm a fan yet. Went briefly for tea yesterday, as my dinner companion and I were waiting for takeout from another restaurant. Our server was really friendly, and explained the minimum charge (which I think is obnoxious, seeing as we were the only patrons in the restaurant, but at least it was explained upon ordering). I ordered the green tea with honey (iced) and my companion ordered a fruit tea (hot), both of which were quite good. They were roasting coffee beans, which created a very strong burnt food smell that permeated the entire restaurant. Investing in better ventilation or perhaps roasting during off-hours might be a better idea? Overall, the tea was good and service was great (pot of fruit tea was refilled immediately after one pour). $15 for both teas was reasonable for the service and quality of the tea. I saw this place reviewed on the front page of Yelp and since this was relatively close to my best friend's place I thought that I would make a day of it. I book marked it on March 24th. I came here with a good friend of mine and fellow yelper Edwin to have an art day in which we sit and do some art projects together while sipping tea. We spent around 3 hours together and both of us finished our art piece. Firstly this place is very easy to miss and is tucked away on the side on W.41st. I tried the Siphon Coffee which was like nothing I've ever had before and was amazing since it was new. I also had a pot of caramel tea. They had to change my order 'cause the London Fog I ordered I specifically said that it needs to be sugar free, however, they added pre-made sugar syrup which made me upset, however, not enough to warrant a bad review since they did apologize and correct the mistake without charging me for my first drink. The waitress was really nice. The place was elegant with lots of nice china wear, nice relaxing music and very social atmosphere. Prices were very reasonable as well. read more

La Cuisson truly is a place for everyone from casual, aspiring coffee aficionados to true coffee CONNOISSEURS. The owner Jason is a true master at both roasting the beans to bring out the best flavours out of the freshest beans he can find from around the world, suppressing acidity & bitterness, while keeping the caffeine low in all his coffee. Jason's also great at sharing his coffee cooking techniques and teaches his customers to use wine tasting techniques to get the most out of the coffee tasting experience. in fact, i took a class he offers every now and then for people aspiring to learn about coffee in general and to learn to cook the awesome syphon style coffee. the syphon, is one of the most versatile coffee extraction instruments i know. once mastered, baristas can tailor cooking technique to the bean and can best extract their desired flavour profile over other instruments. syphon coffee tastes richer than poured methods yet cuts out the harshness/bitterness of the espresso/pressed based approach. like many, i have spent lots on coffee toys: expensive espresso machines, presses, etc. i've come to love the old world syphon the most. note it does take time and patience! at La Cuisson, the idea is to enjoy the unadulterated natural flavours of each bean type or a blend of beans, without adding sugar nor cream. this way, one can truly taste the combination of the quality of bean and the art of the roaster and barista. i've learned various syphon techniques from baristas from various backgrounds and exchanged ideas with Jason often. in my view, Jason's refined techniques makes the most sense. he also tailors his cooking method to accentuate the flavour goals his roasting achieves in the first place. Jason can ensure the coffee taste meets his goals from start to finish, it truly is an awesome experience to taste a rich cup of coffee from ONE master who chooses the raw beans, roasts them, lets the roasted beans rest until their optimal tasting time, and then cooks it for you. every time i sit at the bar and watch him cook syphon coffee, i'd ask Jason different questions and he would unreservingly share his insight with me. i always walk away with a great coffee experience with a sense of growth in my own coffee journey as well. i love it! you should give it a try and if you never had syphon coffee before, ask Jason, the owner to give you a short intro on how it is cooked and how to enjoy the coffee. after trying several local roasters, i've found la cuisson's beans to be the most flavourful, lowest in bitterness and acidity (my preference) and caffeine (i'm sensitive). but prices are definitely on the higher side. if you're looking for a caffeine hit, you can get it cheaper from almost everyone else, but if you want to elevate your own coffee experience, start here. and i suspect like me, you'll also end your journey back at la cuisson. it'll open a world of new coffee experience for most people and i believe you'll love the ride. for true geeks: La Cuisson is the only place I know where you can find true Jamaican blue mountain beans Wallensford stamped (yes i know it doesn't carry the same quality as it once did since the 70's) AND kopi luwak, the most expensive coffee in the world. As far as I know, good quality kopi luwak beans cannot be sourced easily any more due to counterfeits and low quality, mass produced beans (those poor creatures, google will tell you what i mean) but Jason has had a good supplier for years who continues to supply him good quality beans. you should try the kopi luwak from La Cuisson, even if it's just for the one time experience. unless you're a really confident barista, i would recommend leaving it to Jason (i wouldn't ask his sidekick) to cook you a serving (the in house price is for a serving for two people). it's unlike any other coffee in the world. it is delicate, naturally sweet, with a strong impression of fruit and earthy taste. if you don't have a well developed palette yet, save your money and the beans for the rest of us. :) desserts: almost all of the dessert is made in house by the owner, Jason's wife, Tina. she continues to surprise us with new dessert menu and seasonal offerings. i very much like the pena cotta, the japanese style cheese cake, and the cream caramel. sometimes, i feel that the new offerings are works to be refined but i do like almost everything i've tried there. most of the desserts are made to compliment the coffee so some of the combinations are a true mach in heaven. like fine dining restaurants that offer wine pairing, ask the owner Jason to suggest coffee and dessert pairings. i'm confident you'll find a combination you'll fall in love with. no, La Cuisson is not perfect, but for how much i enjoy the entire experience, the only deserving rating is 5 stars. happy fooding, read more

Avoid. My husband and I stopped in for a quick cup of coffee on our way to an appointment. He ordered a mocha and I asked for a decaffeinated latte. The server (owner?) did not seem to understand my request, but eventually told me I was asking for something they did not have. I then asked for herbal tea, which he also seemed confused about and pointed me to a pot of green tea for $8.00. Finally I said I would just please have some water. His response, as he shook his head, was that there was a $4.50 minimum order, and even though my husband had ordered, I was not allowed to sit there and have water. This (there were also empty tables in the room) seemed ludicrous, unreasonable, and just plain rude. We got up and left. At our appointment with a large company steps away, we were told that the owner of that establishment has a very bad reputation, and all their employees go to the corner (Honolulu Coffee) instead. read more

Overpriced and overrated - terrible customer service. Thought we were going to a nice French café but it was an Asian café pretending to be French. Felt totally out of place there. This is a COFFEE shop folks - not a restaurant. Our initial impression - we asked for a table by the window and told it was reserved. During our entire time there - over an hour - no one ever showed up for that RESERVATION. First peeve. Second peeve - it was all in Cantonese or Mandarin - very, very frustrating. What happened to Canada's language laws... Secondly, they had far too may wait staff hovering over tales and pacing back and forth while we ate, discussed, etc. We were trying to have a conversation while the waiter kept coming back to reach over us. Terrible customer service. We felt very unwelcome there - maybe because we were the only white people and it's an Asian / pseudo French café. Back to the food, I asked for a Caramel Macchiato and received a demi-tasse espresso with cream on it. Maybe they should have explained that it was a short shot. Then we thought we'd order some sweets so we had a chocolate hazelnut tarte and a chocolate cheesecake (tiny for the price). They were old and stale - both of them... First time today, OUTSTANDING. I was looking for a destination for my walking group and I've found it. I had the seafood chowder (wow) and the hazelnut coffee cake (good thing I walked there). The seafood chowder was loaded with tasty seafood and the cake was "lick the plate" good! Will definitely be back and will bring my walking group. Loved the cozy atmosphere. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I eat out often and am always so disappointed with the food but this time, it was a winner! read more

If you never had Kopi Luwak coffee - this is a must First they let you smell the beans, confirm the roast date and then the coffee Coffee is made on the table in front of you with a Syphon system which basically drips the coffee from steam and back into concentrate liquids - interesting, first time for me and definitely makes a difference Each brew consists of three cups in different strength so you taste the initial with the strong aroma and chocolate after taste the second cup smoother and bit sweeter and the third very delicate with longer lasting after taste Definitely will be back - great place knowledgeable in coffee I did however place the review before I saw the bill which I'm sure will be on level... Beautiful! Off the Street so quieter outside tables. Very friendly, competent staff. Wi fi exists, tho i didn't use. Some of the best coffee I have had in town and I am glad they offered me a scone too. Super fresh and delicious, not the standard fare. Well done! read more

When I first came to this place, the owner welcomed everyone joining the table with his enthusiasm with coffee and friendly service. However, this time was completely not the case. Awful service (I didn't see the owner), not great food and overall bad experience. I'm simply frustrated with the whole experience and don't want to write in detail as it makes me mad reliving it. So to the food rating: sandwich bread was sweet which was a bad combination with the other ingredients, and the lettuce was wilted. Coffee is way better at Forty Ninth Parallel considering the over-priced-not-so-great coffee here. I hate to not support this place considering I had a good experience the first time but would not go back to waste my money. read more
