A very small FDNY outpost in Rockefeller Center that is free to visit. It's small as mentioned -- one exhibit room, a partial fire engine that you can sit in, and a gift shop area. There are bathrooms, but I'm not sure if guests are allowed to use them. There are lots of nice souvenirs / toys / clothes to buy from the shop. If in the area, it's a great place to stop with your kids to kill some time! read more

I liked that it's not only engaging but also informative. It's a good stop if you want to discover another side of the city, although it's more suitable for younger kids or firefighting enthusiasts. I went there with my daughter and grandson and we thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. George was very friendly and professional and we all learned a lot. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone 5 years old and older. The fire simulator was great and we were able to actually wear a helmet and jacket and also crawl on the floor during the simulation. I would definitely recommend this place. The price was reasonable, even though they forgot to charge my ticket as a Senior. $7.00 for children, $8.00 for adults. read more

I'm not really sure what I walked into that day. I was excited to take my family here and buy some NYC FDNY merchandise. I arrived a half hour before the online closing time knowing it would only be a 15-20 minute experience. I had previously called to confirm closing time. Anyway upon our families arrival at the store we walked into a store employee berating a very confused looking couple with their small child. In the short 3 mins we were there we heard the employee screaming at the family to leave that they were closed. We were so taken back by the absolute display of unprofessionalism by that FDNY employee we just left. No souvenirs, no pictures that we really wanted. I felt even worse for that family. The child looked upset as the employee screamed at his parents. Very poor business practices here. read more

We came here due to my wife finding this for my son who LOVES fire department stuff. Being able to experience all of the free things in there was really cool, then we were fortunate to being there when they had an impromptu showing of their demonstration (paid). The guide for that was a retired NYFD member and he was great at leading this for the kids. Being able to buy shirts of tall the stations was pretty cool as well. Highly recommend for anyone with little ones that love rescue stuff like my son does! read more

Talking about a hidden gem, literally! Had no idea this place existed until we walked by and some firefighters asked if we'd be interested in stopping by. AC on a hot summer day? Sure! An interactive fire safety learning center that is kids friendly and free! You can't beat that! Also, a little secret here, make sure you get your retail shopping done here! I was gonna buy this firetruck toy at the FAO Schwarz store down the street for $20 but decided not to. And then I saw the same toy here, selling for $13! Some other toys are also much cheaper here! So highly recommend it! Staff is friendly and the firefighters on site will explain to you how everything works! read more

There is a new location on 48th street, just off 6th Ave. the fire fighters had a great presentation on fire safety prepared. As a parent I had some of my own for safety questions and I got great advice from straight from firefighters. There's a giant fire truck in the entry. The next room has a wall of the various badges of all of the NYC fire houses, take some time to look they're really varied with fun characters. There's also a wall simulating how 911 calls are received and the chain that brings fire fighters into action. The next room was a sort of high tech simulation of various stories of how fires started and what happened -- its targeted at kids so everyone lives. Then there's some dramatic fake smoke and the kids are asked to crawl to safety out to the gift shop. They were so patient with us and answered all the questions and were really kind about the kids' behavior and meandering questions. It was a privilege. I highly recommend as an educational experience. Not boring for a minute. read more

Inside is: a fire truck, cut down to fit the space but fun to sit inside and see the different parts. A wall full of firefighting equipment and patches from various firefighting units. A room for fire safety demonstrations that looks like a burned out tenement. A gift shop with lots of toys and t shirts. A visit on a weekday morning meant the space was blissfully empty and I spent about an hour and a half playing and perusing. The space is FREE and predominately does field trips to teach fire safety, so I would steer clear during school trips. The fire zone is run by retired firefighters and donations. Great for locals, tourists, and every kid who has ever marveled at a big red truck. read more

We were treated greatly and we loved the experience. My son is autistic and although they thought he may not be able to handle the fire simulation and loud sounds, he actually did and the firefighter in charge was very impressed. My daughters were also there and enjoyed themselves. When you first walk in, you can try on the firefighter jackets on the wall to the left. You don't need much to figure out what to do here. You don't necessarily need guidance because it was our first time and very self explanatory. It's small, very simple and informative. Once you put on gear and check out the fire truck they have on display, you hang around and wait for them to show you a quick video. It's loud, very loud. They show clips of how firefighters respond to calls here in NYC. The place lights up and then you go into a room and see how certain fires are started (Electrical fire, Kitchen fire, cigarette fire etc...) If you paid for the fire simulation you move on to that afterwards and you're done. That's it. Simple, informative and fast. We gave a generous donation and went to the little gift shop in the corner to purchase some items. read more

I stumbled into this place while walking around the area. A typical front/business entrance door with no big sign out front, I saw a lot of firefighters' equipment and decals in the walls. I decided to go in and investigate what it is all about... and I was in for a pleasant surprise. The FDNY Fire Zone Center is designed to teach everyone how dangerous a fire can be and how to prevent it. The place is designed mostly for children. It is the perfect location for a school day trip, day camp and even birthday parties! However, adults can also participate in the fire safety presentation. There is a fire truck mock-up inside to climb and take pics. Decals for every single state of the USA available for purchase as well as t-shirts, toys, books and memorabilia. Admission is free. The fire safety presentation is $6 for adults/children and $2 for seniors. read more

15 women walk into a firefighting learning center... no it's not an introduction to a bad joke but it is a Friday afternoon. We made reservations because we wanted to see the fire demonstration, however smaller groups need not call beforehand. Why would adults come here? They usually wouldn't solo because it is loaded with children, I mean it is a learning center after all. However, some of us were teachers and/or know children that could benefit from coming here so we wanted to see for ourselves so we could be prepared for when we came with anyone else (trial runs rock says the half geeky girl that likes to be prepared). The minute you walk in you see a real firetruck. The same very firetruck you will be getting on later while your sporting a real fireman jacket; sure usually only the kids do it but we got some real Kodak moments that day. The old retired firefighter tour guides looked like they enjoyed watching us make fools of ourselves too. I know what you're thinking, is there a pole? Yes there is, you can grab on to it and take pictures but you can't slide down 2 stories.. sorry! It was pretty neat to see how heavy the firemen gear actually was and to admire all of their badges and think about all of the hard work they put in to earn them. The fire safety demonstration would definitely be helpful for children, in fact it taught me a few things. It takes place in a very dark room with burnt furniture and very dramatic monologue - kids will remember this. It also really made me want to buy a fire extinguisher and carry it around with me (I got over that phase don't worry). Since we are required to teach fire safety to our home schooled children, I went with my son. He went years ago and wanted to go again. The way they present the stories of how fires can start and ways to prevent it from happening (video and lighted displays) really left an impression. At the end of the presentation, the group must simulate an evacuation from a fire by crawling out of the room. You pay a $6 fee per person to see the fire-safety presentation. They also provide a handout with a simple game for the children to play and information on how to plan an escape route. Children can climb into the fire truck, try on a fireman's coat, and touch the displays in the front and visit the small gift shop. Came here one Saturday in April, with a 7 year-old little boy. For some reason, I was expecting a way larger space and a lot more people/children to attend the fire safety presentation. However, aside from myself and the child, there was a French couple (tourists who barely understood English and seemed to accidentally wander in). Because of this reason, the presenter paid extra close attention to us and had us interact more. The presentation lasted about 20-25 minutes and was great: Informative, Interactive, Excellent Props (built and visual) and a short and sweet delivery...All the things needed to keep children interested. My little guy learned a lot here and he even asked to come back sometime in the future in the event that he forgets everything that he has learned. Highly recommended if you and your children need to learn about fire safety! P.S. They have a gift shop if you want to purchase FDNY gear before or after the presentation. read more

Bummed that my four year old nephew couldn't take part in the tour - didn't know it was only for children 5 and up. I was surprised how small it was. But it was cool that there was a real fire truck (especially when theh turn on the siren) and that you can wear firefighter coats! read more

There will be screaming children running around in here. You have been warned. With that said, for kids and grown ups alike this small little center is quite cute and friendly to the picture crazed. There's no flashing sign, and we almost walked past it. Inside is a fire truck where you, rather the kids can jump inside and take pictures of. They even have those lovely firemen jackets for the kids to wear and pretend they are firemen inside the truck. Oh yes this is tourist central at times, plus screaming kids with ADD. You can gaze upon the wall of patches, and the other equipment they have on display. You can buy fdny merchandise, from t-shirts to shot glasses to their lovely calender. Oh yeah you know you want to look. You just can't spend too much time in there, screaming kids running around wearing firemen jackets and their braindead parents that let them run free. Great place for a field trip! The kids get to watch an interactive movie about fire safety, learn how to crawl through smoke, wear fire gear and play on a fire truck. The people who work there are usually retired firefighters. They are really great with the kids and answer their questions. Plus, the kids get to take home a fire safety kit. They can only accommodate one class at a time and you can't eat lunch there. But, Rockefeller Center is right around the corner and you can sit and eat there. read more

My husband and I visited this store while in NYC on our honeymoon. My husband is a firefighter so of course he wanted to get FDNY shirts to bring home with us. It is the tiniest store I have ever seen. There were a bunch of kids on the other side of a small door/wall getting a fire safety presentation. The short divider type door that you can see over was not closed. We never entered the area since the kids were in there, but took a quick peek over top to see the stuff on the other side not disturbing anyone or entering the other side in any way. The older man working at the Fire Zone in a raised voice with a rude tone told us we were NOT allowed in there they have a tour. Which we clearly could see and were not entering there anyways. My husband is a firefighter and I used to work at our REAL Fire Dept therefore we do not wish to see a FAKE children's one...there was no reason to treat paying customers so poorly and rudely for just LOOKING. As we were trying to pick out our purchases we were then rudely told by the same man we had to move to the tiny corner by the cash register so they could sit the kids right in front of the entrance of the store and continue talking to them!!! No one could get out or in...so we could not shop and were now stuck in the store!? 15 minutes later after they moved the kids back to the other room we could leave the store. There was no reason to treat people SO awful or trap them in. You go to a store to shop an support the FDNY and can't do anything. What a disappointment. read more
