This is the BEST florist in Southern California! The flowers may be a tad bit more expensive, but the design, longevity of flowers and service is well worth it! This is a long overdue for Feather Acres and the incredible florist at its heart, Kate! Kate did all the flower arrangements for our wedding in October. Prior to the big day, she gave me a very reasonable quote for her services and was a joy to communicate with. Feather Acres Farm & Nursery is a much too well kept secret in the Del Mar/Solana Beach area. I can't believe more parents don't know about it, and every kid in our area should have the opportunity to go. Hidden in the hills above and behind the Flower Hill mall, it is a tough place to find, but it is well worth the journey. I've taken my toddlers here twice - once with our kids with my son's preschool class and once today for a 4-year old's birthday party. My wife has also taken our kids here at least one other time. In addition to having a beautiful nursery, they have pony rides on perfectly tempered horses of modest size (pretty good phrasing, right? Today my son rode "Katie"), we fed the goats, we hollared with the turkey (in a fun way) in the goats' enclosure, and we watched the chickens, ducks, geese, guinea pigs and bunnies. There was even a house cat holding court and surveying all in the nursery. My son had a wonderful time, and the people who work at Feather Acres Farm & Nursery (and who presumably also own the place) couldn't have been nicer, just like last time. It can't be easy to operate a fully functioning farm for so long in Del Mar when the value of the land under them has to be huge. The temptation to sell must be tremendous, so we should all take our kids, shop at their nursery, and try to keep them around as a wonderful amenity to our community for as long as they choose to continue operating. Our day at Feather Acres Farm started off with pony rides. Our 2.5 year old tots rode Sugar and Katie. The man and young woman leading the horses were very gentle and patient with our young riders. The kids were led around the corral a few times, and then were taken down a path through the farm. After our ride, we went into the nursery to see the bunny and guinea pigs. The kids were able to sit with the bunny, Mr. Moose, and hold guinea pigs. Here is where things took a turn for the worse. A woman working inside the shop/nursery did not like how excitable the children were and asked that they not touch anything. She asked us to leave the nursery, and she followed us out. One of the children began touching a sign near the animals, and the woman ran over and began SCREAMING at the child. "Mister, do not touch one more thing. Do you understand me??!" She kept repeating herself. The woman was so angry she was turning red! Instead of addressing the child's mother, she chose to scream at the child. The woman's behavior was grossly inappropriate and unprofessional. I am quite confident that this woman would not be okay if someone spoke to her in the same tone and the same degrading manner that she used when she spoke to the child. If you offer pony rides and a petting zoo, be prepared to interact with children. I would not recommend this place to anyone! read more

Our 4-year old enjoyed the pony ride while our 1 year old enjoyed playing in the dirt and flowers. The pony ride is a great deal for $5. (Make sure you call in advance about the pony rides - there was a party on the day we visited and we wouldn't have been able to ride if we had arrived 20 minutes later.) I really thought this was a lovely place. And I thought it was magical for kids. The flowers, the guinea pigs, bunny, horses, goats and pony rides! Got some herbs and a cute planter. The first couple of times I went everyone seemed nice, but I have to agree with some of the reviews below. I'm not really sure how much the folks that work there actually like kids. I wanted to be respectful of their place and of their animals. I'm mortified - I was asked to leave because my 2 year old son was crying. We were waiting in line for a pony ride and I was trying every trick in my bag - food, shushing, being stern to get him to stop - but he really wanted a turn and was crying. The gentleman asked me to leave - said the crying has to stop because it bothers the horses. I totally respect that they can do what they want with their place and run it as they see fit. I just wish I didn't end up in tears after 30 stressful minutes of waiting in the sun with a mess of a line and no pony ride. I just felt there was no empathy at all. I thought it was a place for kiddos. It's hard enough trying to deal with a child crying inconsolably but then to be asked to leave? At a restaurant or a movie - but outside at a petting farm? I would suggest a better system for the rides instead of making kiddos wait 30+ minutes in the sun. (perhaps a sign up sheet or numbers so they can walk around until its their turn?) Or not. I was treated very poorly by an older women when purchasing a lavender plant who was upset about the group discount we got (moms group). Such a delightful way to spend some family time together. I went with my mom, 3 year old and ten-month old. The activities are probably more well suited for toddlers who are steady on their feet and younger children (3-8 years old) If you've got a pre-walker, don't bring a stroller; you won't get to see/do much. Try putting the little one in a baby carrier or sling. The roads and walkways are unpaved, which means dirt and a lot of dust. Wear closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting dirty/dusty and don't wear white. On to the fun part - they've got a great retail area with plants, birdhouses, vintage-y looking items and some western-themed baby clothes. Inside this space, you'll find Mr. Moose, the rabbit. They actually let little ones (two at a time) climb into his enclosure with him, provided that the kiddos stay seated atop the two planters that serve as makeshift stools. Little ones need to be mellow, as Mr. Moose has nowhere to hide if they get grabby or excited. Also in the retail space, the guinea pig pen can be found. Again, two kiddos are allowed to have a seat and here, they can actually hold the gentle critters in their laps. There's a donation box here - if you can, leave a little something. Entrance to the farm is free and the smiles on your little ones' faces are more than worth whatever goes in that box! The highlight of our visit was the pony ride. This was my three year old's first time on a pony and it couldn't have gone better. Be prepared to sign a waiver before your kiddo hops on. The $5 fee is certainly worth the experience! In case it isn't clear, this is not a petting zoo. The farm is home to a floral business and plant nursery. The animal aspect of your visit is made possible by the graciousness of the farm's owners. These critters are their personal animal companions, so please be kind, gentle and respectful. read more

Review Summary: Pony ride is great but the angry lady in the greenhouse who SCREAMED at my almost 3 year old son makes this place NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN. This place is NOT child friendly. If you have kids who don't touch anything and stay quiet, this is the place for you. If your kids are like normal kids and touch things and explore, don't risk being yelled at by the angry woman inside the greenhouse! Our trip to Feather Acres started out great. We wandered the property, got pony rides and enjoyed the serene environment. The pony ride was wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised by how kind and gentle the two folks leading the ponies were (a younger girl and her uncle). They were kind and understanding with our kids, who are almost 3, and simply amazing. If I were rating the pony ride alone, I'd say 5+ stars! Things took a turn in the greenhouse. You have to go inside to pay for the pony ride. Inside they have a bunny and some guinea pigs you can pet and gently handle. While our kids were supervised the entire time, there were moments where we had to guide them to be gentle or redirect them, but overall they were very gentle with the animals. My daughter grabbed one of the guinea pigs and I immediately picked her up and removed her from the area. There's a lot to play with around the farm. Old tools, watering cans and things that are of obvious interest to children. My son touched and explored all of these things and as I said, if he was not being gentle, I would ask him to be gentle and move him along. But this was not acceptable to one very angry older woman in the greenhouse. Note, nothing was broken or otherwise damaged during our visit. Upon being asked to leave the greenhouse "or it might not be standing" when we left (yes, that's a quote), we went outside and were about to leave when my son went across the dirt path to play with another old farm implement when this hostile woman came out of nowhere (she was obviously following us) and yelled at my son and told him he "BETTER NOT TOUCH ONE MORE THING". She was clearly VERY ANGRY and has no business working in a place where kids are present. I was nearby and already addressing my son when all of this took place so she didn't need to intervene but she couldn't help herself, obviously so angry she could not contain herself. When she yelled at my son, I told her to stop and that she may not continue to speak to him. If she had an issue, she should have approached me - after all, I was about 2 feet away from her - as opposed to approaching my child in a hostile way. She was red-faced and angry and kept muttering under her breath as she walked away. Unstable! Unfortunately, a trip that started out so wonderfully was ruined. My son is almost three and kept saying the following on our way home: "I was just trying to play. I don't want to go back there, I want to go home. I don't like that place." Not exactly what you would hope for your kid's first pony ride. I will not bring my kids here again. Although it would probably be fine to take older kids here, you don't want to bring them around an angry woman who clearly dislikes kids. Whether this woman is the owner or an employee, she's doing a terrible disservice to the other people who work here who are super sweet! Get it together! And for the safety of your guests, stay away from the children. I considered revising my rating because the pony ride was so great. Unfortunately, I wouldn't go here just for the pony ride and let's face it, a pony ride place that's not kid friendly is pointless so 1 star it is. read more

I don't usually write reviews but I will today, we had my son's 2nd birthday party here Memorial Day weekend. It was a wonderful place to have it. We are so happy that all of his friends including the birthday boy enjoyed riding "Sugar" and "Katie" (the ponies) as much as they wanted. I think petting the guinea pigs and bunny were also a big hit. Any children that loves animals would love Feather Acres Farm & Nursery and it's a great way to spend time in the outdoors without iPads and television. We loved working with Chelsie and her uncle Tom, they were very sweet and accommodating to our party. We also really liked the picnic area as there were shaded areas and that we got to grill hamburgers and hot dogs. It really was perfect. I think everyone had a great time! For the past couple years (1-2 times per week), my ten-year-old daughter has been going to this magical farm for the horses. But, it is so much more than horses. Feather Acres has beautiful flowers, cute ponies, hilarious goats, and oh-so-much-more. The nursery offers an amazing selection of customized flower arrangements, healthy house plants, and unique annuals/perennials. The farm is just as delightful with an array of large and small animals (horses, cow, goats, chicken, turkey, etc). Oftentimes, my eight-year-old son and five-year-old daughter join my older daughter there, because it really is a special place. We have been there 100+ times and neither I nor my children (nor the friends of my children) have ever been treated poorly. As a matter of fact, the Feather Acres owners and employees are among the kindest people we know and we so appreciate their willingness to share their time, beautiful flowers, land, animals, and good spirit with us. Sure, Mr. Ted and Miss Vicki may tell me (and/or my kids) if we are inadvertently doing something that could harm ourselves, the animals, or their property (we are city slickers, so once in a while we need instructions :). But, this is appreciated because it teaches us how to behave around a "real" farm. I would highly recommend Feather Acres for anyone that loves gardening and/or farm animals! read more

I contacted Kate last January about my July wedding and she was very receptive to the pictures that I had sent her as my inspirations. At our meeting I showed her more references to further explain what I'd like the tables, the bouquets, the centerpieces and the arch for our ceremony to look like for our outdoor farmhouse wedding in Julian. Kate instantly understood the direction that I wanted to go in and was very excited to go forward to develop the whole look of the wedding. I had a budget that I needed to work with and she made it all happen within that budget. Weddings are intense and it was so peaceful working with Kate. This is the best keep secret in North County San Diego! My mother-in-law mentioned the place because she wanted to get some flowers for the house. We went as a family and they have a full on petting zoo with horses, rabbits, goats, turkeys, and even a cow. The greatest surprise is the $5 miniature horse rides for the kids. Call ahead, I think they have specific days for rides. They let you feed the animals and the staff is unbelievably friendly. Hardest thing about the farm is finding it! This is my first time doing a Yelp review but the staff at Feather Acres were so great I had to write one. We recently had my son's first birthday here and it couldn't have been more perfect. The staff was so friendly and accommodating and were wonderful with all the children. It had rained the night before and suppose to rain the day of so I was VERY nervous with how we would be able to pull the party off but they had a great back up plan and it all worked out. This place is the best kept secret in all of San Diego and if you are thinking of hosting a birthday party here, stop thinking about it and do it. It was the perfect 1st birthday party.
