Don't bother supporting these guys. They don't care. Like, personally, they don't care. If you have a problem with anything, you're screwed. Never mind the condescension, that's free and there will be plenty of it. I used an osprey backpack called the 'Mutant' one time, one single day, and a sharp piece of plastic cut it's way from the inside through the weak material and they said it looked like "animal damage". They basically just said tape it up. I said I'll use it one more time to see if it gets worse, it did and it's very obvious that the sharp back-support is slicing through the very lousy material. They couldn't have cared less but I insisted they send it out for warranty because they wouldn't accept it as a return. I used it two times, very lightly. Most times I've shopped here I've had some regret. I won't bother again. read more

They went above and beyond to ease my pain over a problem that had nothing to do with them at all. I didn't even ask for the special treatment, I simply stated my situation and the fellow helping me with my rental did 100% of what was possible. Thanks! I am not a climber so I can't speak to much of the merch. But, in the areas I am familiar, I saw only top-quality gear. I think it's safe to say they don't carry junk. The sales staff seem not be super peppy, "I live to serve" retail robots, and that's fine with me. They're helpful and knowledgeable and adequately friendly -- they don't have to be my BFF. This is a great place for serious outdoor gear. I came here to get a Swedish tent that's pretty hard to find in the US. The people in the store were super helpful, and cleared a bunch of racks out of the way to help show me how to set up the tent before taking it home. I was able to get some pretty lightweight snow stakes as well. I'm told they make the best sleeping bags in the world, and have heard the same about their down suits. Earlier in the day I was looking for a jacket at Arc'Teryx and they sent me here, apparently Feathered Friends carries more of their women's gear than their own stores. I look forward to buying more gear from them the next time I'm in town. read more

I just bought the Rock and Ice parka. This jacket is 609 grams of 850+down fill. It has the event outer shell. I bought a large and it fits perfect. I'm 5'11,190lbs. Wow, this is a great jacket. I'm in Chicago, where the wind chill gets to -45. I'm outside for 6 or more hours at a time. All I wear underneath is a t-shirt and I have no trouble keeping warm. You get what you pay for. I highly recommend this jacket. There customer service good be better. read more

On top of the phenomenal selection of outdoor gear, their staff is second to none. I have sunglasses that were purchased for me as a gift (not at this store) and after normal wear & tear, the lenses seemed to be peeling. I called the manufacturer and they honored the warranty and told me to send them back - the issue being these are my only sunglasses and I would be without a pair for up to 2 weeks. So they suggested calling a few local shops to see if they'd swap out a pair for one in their inventory. I called one other place and they said if the glasses weren't purchased there, they wouldn't replace them for me. Not Feathered Friends! Todd was EXTREMELY helpful, the rest of the staff happily engaged with my precocious 4 yr old daughter and did I mention the gear they sell is top notch? I would recommend this place to anyone looking for outdoor gear. read more

I bought three different bags at REI and returned all of them, once doing online research and realizing the staff at REI had been regurgitating a script that they are taught about each product. I went into Feathered Friends today to buy a sleeping bag that actually fits me, and they immediately knew what size I needed and why. They knew where their down comes from, and gives you information on how to see where it was sourced. She also knew how to care for the bag, how to wash and dry it, and how their warranty works. She had an answer to everything I asked, and was more than willing to go over things with me. She even explained why the bag was a little pricier than the one I decided on in REI. It feels good spending my money at a local store on something that is handmade in America. It was great! I will definitely be returning when it's time to buy packs next month. read more

This was my first experience buying anything at Feathered Friends. I needed a quality down sleeping bag since the one I had allowed me to get in it, but tended to not let me out anywhere close to quickly for those moments in the middle of the night when nature calls. Anyways I walked into the store and at first the staff seemed to want nothing to do with me and stared very interested in whatever they were looking at on their computers. However, once I asked for some help one of the associates promptly got up and helped me make a decision on a new down sleeping bag. Jamison had me try out two different bags, and she accurately judged which would fit me best, and also explained the differences between the fabrics that each bag is made with, as well as some other special features of their down bags. Great customer service once you ask for help, however the avoidance of customers is quite strange. Overall a good experience. read more

I tried to post a negative review of FF Snowy Owl sleeping bag on the Feathered Friends web site. They did not allow it. They post only good reviews. That alone should stop anyone in dealing with this company. For $1079 I had a sleeping bag that left me freezing. The down shifted and clumped together and there was no insulation over my chest. Also, the zipper is undersized and it was constantly frozen, impossible to open. There is not nearly enough insulation on the bottom side of the bag. This bag is overpriced and overhyped by FF. I can see why other Yelpers have commented about the employees being aloof; they do seem to be. However, when you do ask for help, they are willing to answer your questions. Max, an employee, was exceptionally helpful. He had so much knowledge about the products and uses; he answered all of our (husband & myself) questions. Ripped my sleeping bag on a current 3 month road trip that I'm on. Walked into ask what sleeping bag was their cheapest all the employees looked at each other and laughed like I had just asked the funniest question and said $300 and they didn't offer any assistance after that...5 seconds later I found one for $200. Ended up walking to REI getting the rei co-op bag for $325 and you can't beat the customer service and return policy there. read more

When I asked if I could try on a pair of La Sportiva Mountaineering boots, I was asked what my plans were and given tons of pairs for fit and lots of advice on sizing. Sadly, today my opinion changed-I bought my daughter a $229 full length down coat for college-she packed it and took it to Chicago-she wore once-packed and brought it home. I tried to return some down booties that I mistakenly bought. I only tried them on inside my house. I had them on for under 30 seconds! Todd of feathered friends accuses me of wearing them outside and getting dirt on them. He will only offer a refund minus 15% because he claims he won't be able to sell these as new. I had to pay $20 out of my own pocket to ship these back in the first place. Now he wants to take another $15 fron me ?? And accuses me of lying to him and wearing these outside ?? I will never buy from these people again. Cotopaxi on the other hand is a great company and I had no trouble returning and exchanging two items of theirs . read more

Bought an overpriced comforter recommended by thesweethome.com. Comforter didn't even have duvet ties and was on sale shortly after. Paid over $450 and they would not honor a price adjustment for the 20% off sale. Customer service is important and this company doesn't care for repeat business. Take a lesson from Costco, Brooksbrothers, and Amazon. They don't pinch pennies and realize that long term customer satisfaction is more important than arbitrary policies. I hope this review causes feathered friends to lose at least 1 customer which should more than cover the refund difference requested. read more

If you want climbing gear you are better off ignoring the annual rebate from the big store accross the street and heading here where the selection is better, the staff is more knowlegeable and you are much more likely to walk out the door with what you need. I recently bought a new climbing rope here, and I'm glad I stopped in because the rope I almost bought at their competitor was really not up for the job I had described wanting it for. The first pair of rock shoes I bought at the big store accross the street was junk. The staff at Feathered Friends got me into a pair that were perfect for me. Now I'm building my lead rack, and Feathered Friends just has a better selection: a wider selection of chocks, hexes, and cams. Plus most of the staff climb, some extremely well, and they can really fill you in the pros and cons of the pro you are looking at. That plus the shops obvious commitment to the sport of climbing make it the place to go. Of course if you need a piece of pricey luggage or casual wear or a trailside iced margarita maker or a four cup car-camping espresso maker, then the big store accross the street is probably more for you. read more

As a rule, I try not to make absolute statements. That being said, the service that I received today from Neil at Feathered Friends may be the best retail experience that I've ever had. I walked in with a pair of mountaineering boots that I purchased elsewhere and Neil spent literally an hour with me to get them fitting properly. He patiently measured my foot several times, had me try several different Superfeet insoles to ensure I was getting the perfect fit, and he even did some custom work on my boots to mitigate the fact that I probably purchased a boot a half size too small. He was extremely patient, very knowledgeable and an all around super-nice guy. I will happily return to Feathered Friends for my next outdoor gear purchase. They have just earned a client for life. read more

Get your down sleeping bag here. The quality is absolutely worth the price. I wanted a particular size with a particular down rating, and they didn't have it in stock. They told me it would be ready in three days at the factory--did I want to pick it up there? You bet, since I was leaving for a backpacking trip in five days. The worst customer service i have ever experienced, i had two down sleeping bags custom made for me, and a coat, at a cost of over three thousand dollars, i needed to make a change to my order, called the factory, and the woman that i spoke with was about the filthiest woman i have ever spoken with, i do not know how they stay in business,? here it is six years later, and i placed an order, a very simple order, for an item that they have in stock, and four weeks later, i am still waiting for it, i will never place another order with this company as long as i live, i hope the owner of feathered friends reads these reviews, and cleans house in his establishment, whoever is managing this place, needs to go, read more

This place has the worst customer service of any outdoors store I've been to in the United States. They rent broken gear and don't check their beacons before they rent them out -- it's unconscionable. People could die because of that. They're also extremely rude and act like you're wasting their time even when you're buying hundreds of dollars worth of their merchandise. There are lots of responsible stores in Seattle for outdoor equipment; I hope for public safety that this one goes out of business. read more

I needed a new winter coat after my last one started breaking down. I did my research for a warm coat that would withstand the cold in the Canaan Valley of West Virginia (It can drop below zero here). I chose to purchase the Icefall Parka. I was worried about the fit of the parka so I emailed customer service. A store representative responded within hours of my inquiry. I was skeptical of spending $600 on a coast that had little feedback online at first. After receiving the parka I was amazed how sleek it was in person. After wearing the coat for a couple of months I have nothing bad to say about it. It is a large coat and I have snagged it against a couple metal objects and they never left a mark on it. Once in awhile you do loose some feathers here and there but you must expect that since it's full of goose down. The outside zipper can be a little hard to line up sometimes but its not anything too concerning. The parka has a lot of pockets.The parka is so warm that it makes you really realize how cold below freezing is if your not wearing gloves or insulated pants.I have received a lot of compliments in the public while wearing the Icefall Parka and would recommend doing business with Feathered Friends based on my experience. read more
