2nd visit was very disappointing. The braised short rib Benedict was served over 2 large pieces of jalapeno cornbread. Unfortunately the poached eggs were completely, fully cooked (looked like a hard boiled egg when you cut into them). The short rib looked like meat from a pot roast. Lacked that rich beefy flavor you'd expect from a short rib. The French dip sandwich was also disappointing. The meat looked like warmed, sliced deli meat. The au jus dip lacked flavor. I also made the mistake of asking for veggies instead of fries. They brought out the blandest boiled veggie mix of cauliflower, carrot, zucchini and squash. Not a speck of seasoning, oil or butter to be found. On top of all this, I had ordered a club soda for my drink. In every single place I've been to, this has been treated as regular table water and free of charge. Not only did they charge for it, they charged me again for a refill. It's one thing to consider this a soft drink but to charge for a refill too??? Pretty terrible overall experience today. read more

This was my first stop for Houston restaurant week (month basically). I went on Saturday for a brunch around 1230. I did book a reservation but it wasn't packed. They do have their own parking area since the restaurant next door to them is pretty packed. My friend and I got two different appetizers to share. The cheeseburger egg rolls were okay, I felt they were kind of burnt. The bang bang shrimp had the right flavors but not texture. Wish the fried shrimp had more batter on it for a crisper taste. For my entree, I got the full federal breakfast. I loved that the French toast was sweet and soft, and not just made with regular bread. Potatoes were seasoned well. No complaints about the bacon and eggs. Waiting staff was nice. Oh, I ordered a spinach dip to go (not pictured), since I saw our neighbors get it. This was my second time there. The food and drinks are great. I ordered the pecan crusted snapper again. This time it did come with different sides - kind of cool, something different than the previous trip which was only in October. They said they said one of the high top tables near the bar and I thought it was kind of cool that the manager brought me a little coat rack thing to hang our purses on. We had two problems which is why it got 3 stars: 1. Our reservation was for seven and at 7:25. We had to go ask when our table would be ready and the reservations were made a week in advance 2. we were there for a birthday (2 couples) and we wanted the table side smoked old-fashioned so we ordered it and our waitress who is new didn't bother to tell us that it cost extra to get the table side. So they brought us the plain one from behind the bar, so we kind of missed out on that experience. Since it's $5 more expensive to do a table side, you would think that they would push for that to raise the overall bill for their tip. But her excuse when we mentioned it was "oh, you didn't ask for that. Its $5 more" Well, we didn't know we had to ask for it, thats not mentioned on the menu - we just thought it was part of the drink... but other than our waitress being inexperienced... it was a fantastic evening and we would still return. read more

My wife and I finally had our first visit to Federal American Grill. We were greeted by the manager opening and holding the door open for us. Once inside and seated, our waitress was at our table in less than a minute. (I noticed this was true, with the couple that came and sat at a table next to us too) We got our drink orders and then a basket of homemade sour dough rolls (biscuits) was at our table. These were great biscuits and the jelly & butter were out of this world. My wife had the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken. The salad was fresh & crisp and the chicken, was seasoned and grilled to perfection. I had the sticky ribs. The ribs were fall off the bone and great. The sticky sauce was a nice mixture of sweet and spicy. Definitely going to get them again. Great food, matched with great service. My only negative comment, which did does not affect my rating. Is the table top was loose. It wiggled around and moved any time you cut anything or even just by spreading the butter and jelly on the biscuits. We chose Federal for one of our HRW options for brunch. It happens to be right next door to Mia's table where we ate a few weeks ago. We didn't need reservations and were able to pull up and be seated right away. Gabriel was our server and he did a great job. I ordered the pancakes and the Bacon egg and cheese omelette made with 4 eggs. My wife had the Philly cheese sandwich. The portions are large and I had to bring most of the pancakes home. The omelette was fluffy and delicious. We had lemonade and Arnold Palmer to drink. The service was excellent and it's an excellent place to check out their menu during the HRW. We may visit in the future for their lunch and dinner menus. read more

I have been to this location a number of times in addition to their I10 location and today was the first time I walked out dissapointed with my meal. I had the Chivken Fried Steak and it was very over cooked. And whatever the mash potatoes were that came with it I would not want again. Some thick yellow mess that seemed like it had cheese in it. Honestly I should have returned it but I was dealing with my grandsons and just endured the meat and left the potatoes. The other 3 adults entrees were great and the 3 apps we ordered were outstanding. Bang bang shrimp is my favorite. The food is consistently good: East coast oysters, beef Carpacio, and meatball appetizers are all great selections. Their steaks and seafood are always first quality and you must try the Manchego cheese grits. Finish with the half baked chocolate chip cookie and ice cream! Upscale but casual and friendly. Late Post HRW: Dined at this restaurant for date night and to try more menu items. It was a Sunday night so it wasn't crowded which had me nervous at first due to lack of customers. For dinner I tried meatloaf which normally I don't eat that out as I'm very picky and love my Aunt's 4 protein meatloaf and is the best I've had. I must say their meatloaf was really good and had homemade flavors, really moist and garlicky potatoes with gravy made all the difference. My husband tried the braised short rib and he enjoyed it as well very juicy full of flavor. Nice portions for the price. The appetizers tuna poke and bang bang shrimp was amazing. Desserts weee just okay but overall good experience. I will definitely be back to try their Social Hour as they have a nice drink menu with variety of food choices. Be nice for light meal after work. We recently moved to Katy and have been trying out all the restaurants in the area. Came here at 2pm on a Tuesday because we're off all week for the holiday. When I tell you that it was one of the best meals I have EVER had, I'm not even being dramatic. We started off with the Oysters Rockefeller and the Kung Pao Calamari. My girlfriend is from the East Coast and is very picky about seafood. We absolutely loved both of the apps! The margaritas are strong and refreshing. They're actually better than the margaritas you get next door at Lupe Tortilla. I got the Truffle Stuffed Chicken as my entree and was literally speechless. It was absolutely unbelievable! My girlfriend got the ribeye and enjoyed it as well. An absolute 10/10. Now that my mouth knows what this place tastes like, I know we'll be back all the time! read more

Visited Federal American Grill for the first time yesterday (we had a large group of 9) and was very pleased with how attentive the manager (Taylor) was throughout the evening. I have a pretty restricted medical diet which makes dining out difficult, so I called ahead and spoke with Taylor who made sure to make notes for my server of what I could eat. He and our server checked on me several times to make sure everything was taken care of. The food and drinks were wonderful and it was reassuring to be able to safely dine out at a new restaurant with friends, without worrying about food allergies/restrictions the entire night. I have been well overdue in my assessment of this restaurant. I'd heard about it for years, but had never gone and I will tell you if you have not gone. You will have missed a great restaurant experience. As I normally do, I sat at the bar Drinks are phenomenal, and the bartenders are extremely conversant and very knowledgeable. If you don't want the romance of a table as a couple I would highly suggest the setting the bartenders are on service and as I say, they are quite involved with their clients. I had only appetizers and drinks. I've already alpine the drinks are excellent. I had an old-fashioned. The fruit was mold and I ask for a rye bourbon because I like the offset to the typical simple syrup of the drink and sure enough I do not recollect which Rye whiskey I had but they have an extensive collection. I don't recollect specifically the appetizer I had and I apologize for that. Oh no, I do remember it was muscles and it was very very well done not overcooked at all, and it was in a delightful sauce. In my opinion, you should not miss this restaurant. It is a great dining experience. Good food, wonderful drinks and at least at the bar outstanding service. read more

I DoorDashed a cheeseburger and oysters Rockefeller tonight. The oysters were for my dad who's been mentioning that he wanted them, took a bit to get the order, no problem. Got the order and it was sealed and opened it and saw that we got fettuccine Alfredo with chicken instead. So my dad didn't get his oyster & I didn't get my cheeseburger. DoorDash refunded the mistake, but now I'm eating the blandest fettuccine Alfredo and chicken with no seasoning. Whoever did get my burger, hope it was better than what you ordered. I get that mistakes happen, but please have a better system with sealed orders to ensure people get their food. Had I eaten at the restaurant, getting the wrong dish would not happen. This restaurant was the top of our list for my annual "winter break date" with my college-age nephew. So glad I made a reservation -- especially on a busy Friday night. We were seated immediately in a nice booth near the Christmas tree. Our waiter provided just the right amount of attention. Diners can be comfortable in jeans and boots or dressed up for an evening out. If you enjoy Bourbon or Whiskey, they have some interesting cocktails on their menu. I thoroughly enjoyed the Barrel Aged Old Fashioned. We both agreed our favorite item was the Smoked Pork Belly appetizer. I've never seen a waiter, so excited to present a dish! My nephew ordered the full portion of the Meatloaf entrée. And he had an entire piece to bring home. Came here for lunch with some friends for Houston restaurant week and it was pretty good! As our first course we got the salmon poke and the kung pao shrimp tacos. For our main dish we got the freedom burger and the blackened ahi tuna, everything was very good and I wouldn't change anything about it! The restaurant itself was very nice and elegant and our service was great, our server was very observant and helped us with the questions we had and our waters were never empty! Ok I've driven by this place dozens of times threatening to drop in for dinner but was hesitant because of the rating. Ok the day finally came and I now regret passing this place up so many times. What's not to love? The food, drinks and atmosphere is perfect for casual dining. The environment is slightly upscale casual with a huge whisky bar centrally located. Yes, this my first visit, but there were no misses for me. I had a mezcal old fashioned that was perfectly balanced with tequila and bitters. My meal was a half portion of meatloaf with Brussel sprouts instead of the mashed potatoes. This was more than enough food for dinner. The sprouts were great without being sweet. Perhaps this experience was an anomaly but it far exceeded my expectations. Great job! read more

Not sure why this place doesn't have a higher avg rating! Popped in on a Sunday evening for the 1st time and now I just came back 2 weeks later. I've passed this place tons of times somehow I thought it would be food with minimal flavor. I was wrong! The food is quite tasty! The place has a bistro type vibe... lots of high top tables in addition to regular tables, plus open kitchen & multiple TVs. Also has 2 separate eating areas off the main dining area for groups. Enjoyed the smoked old fashion which they bring to your table in a glass smoker. Here's the food I've tried on my 2 visits: Crab Cake - full of crab, minimal breadiness, nice cripiness on outside, lots of crab meat inside, nice size for $25 price point. 2nd visit got the roasted chicken which was a thigh, leg & breast. The chicken was flavorful even though I didn't get the creamy sauce that comes with it. Also, I was pleasantly surprised the breast was tender not dry at all. First visit food didn't take long. This 2nd time, the chicken took almost 30 min to arrive. The place didn't seem that crowded so not sure what happened. I asked the server was it because of the chicken but he didn't really have an answer as to why so long. I will return. I like the food & the vibe. Really just ground beef in a fried wonton wrapper so I mean it was good for what it was. The free biscuits with the butter spread and this pepper jam in the beginning were delicious. The pancake HRW meal came with four pancakes and I had to take three home. The potatoes were phenomenal honestly because they had pickled onions and jalapeños. My toddler got a kids meal and the grilled cheese was on this super thick bread but not grilled well. How do I know? He asked me for the cheese and I was able to take the slice out. Fail. A friend and I went to the Katy location on the day after Easter. The music in the parking lot was incredibly loud and was a little bit lower inside the restaurant. It was 12 noon when we arrived and I thought maybe they had just opened and had a party-like atmosphere going on. But the volume was never reduced and when we ordered, I asked if the music could be turned down a bit. Our server said she would check with the manager, so it seemed obvious to me that the manager would decide if it was too loud or not. My friend and I never detected any lowering of the volume. Our entire hour and a half lunch we had to lean across the table to have our conversation so the other person could hear. I really couldn't even enjoy my lunch. It was all about trying to speak loudly enough to be able to have a conversation. Not in a hurry to come back. read more

This is one of my go-to Katy area restaurants. The service at the bar (where I usually eat) is always on point...Danny, Thomas, Raul, Kendall are welcoming and are great bartenders. I've tried a variety of food on the menu and really never been disappointed. But my faves are the Cajun Chicken Sandwich, Crab Cake, and the mushroom risotto (which I day dream about sometimes). They have a nice patio, private dining areas, and plenty of high-top tables for less formal meals (or a first "date" if you want to meet for a drink but don't want to sit right at the bar). I will have to read some of the low ratings to see what their concerns are, but every time I have been there is management floating around to ensure a seamless experience. read more

Our party of 7 visited the Grand Pkwy location last night to celebrate birthdays. I made reservations and needed to add one to it last minute and they happily obliged. However the service Hayden provided, our lack there of and the food quality ruined the night. We ordered 2 orders of cheeseburger egg rolls, only received one order and they were cold. I reminded him, but to no avail. main course finally arrived, ice cold with the exception of the steak which was ordered medium and was served well done with a baked potato so under cooked we needed a steak night to cut it into bite sized pieces. We would've sent it back but no one ever came to check on us, which is also why we had to refill our own water/ tea glasses throughout the night at the various stations set up throughout the space. Reluctantly we order dessert, only because we were celebrating 3 birthdays they came out after another half hour of waiting and again ice cold. So cold in fact the ice cream that sat on top of the bread pudding wouldn't melt. We sent it back and asked for the check for our party of 5 adults and 2 kids which included a 20% gratuity already attached. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Of all the places we could have chosen to celebrate our loved ones, we end up at a place where we paid to be forgotten and/or neglected, cold food and mandatory gratuities for refilling our own beverages. read more

We went to Federal American Grill to celebrate my 15-year-old's birthday, expecting a nice family meal, but instead, we were met with Trump flags stuck all over the kids' burgers. No family, especially one just trying to enjoy a birthday dinner, should have politics forced on them like this. If you support Trump, fine--that's your business--but why shove it onto every kid's meal? It felt unnecessary and honestly trashy. A restaurant should be a neutral space where everyone feels comfortable, not a place pushing political agendas. Do better.
