My aunt passed and left my family her condo, but due to logistical, time and travel constraints we decided to ship a majority of her things to San Diego and find alternate junk removal/renovations. Communicaitons were good and the estimate was fast and affordable. I'd use them again for moving/large shipping out of the midwest. I find over communication, documentation are very helpful in dealing with movers. It keeps everyone accountable as I was also dealing with the building/property management and approvals for all outside vendors. There was a time when I was considering moving from San Diego into the condo in Chicago and would probably have used Allied/Federal again, but it's not often I get to reccomend their services as my situation is a little unique. Overpaying isn't what comes to mind all this time later thinking back on doing business with them becuase of all the services, assurances and communications I had with Paul. It's professionalism and accuracy, even down to taggin each item and tracking. read more

DO NOT USE My treadmill was dropped during my move and no one told me, when I went to use it I kept getting an error. I also tipped each mover $150. It took the moving company a month to respond. My treadmill is unrepairable. I have had a technician out to try to fix which cost me money. They are only going to reimburse me $87. The technician cost was $169, and the treadmill is $3000. I would NOT work with them. I am also a single mom. Bad business. Take your business elsewhere where you get respect. read more

Had an interstate move from Chicago to central Indiana through Allied Van Lines/Federal Whalen over the course of 2 days. Quote was easy and simple through video call to assess size of move. Move coordinator followed up appropriately and timely. Movers came on time, were great communicators, and were great with taking good care of our belongings. Initial agent who made the quote and answered our questions stated truck with our belongings would be parked in secured Federal owned facility which was one of the reasons I decided to go with Federal/Allied. Come day of move, driver stated truck would be parked in hotel overnight and NOT in secured warehouse. At the end of the day, our items arrived on time and in good condition so overall I would still use the again for a future move but I would ask my questions with every person they involve in my move just to clarify information/expectations. read more

I had a horrible experience with Federal Companies and Allied Van Lines. Before getting into the negative experience I had, I want to recognize the positive aspects of my awful moving experience. Thank you to the Chicago crew that picked-up my things, thank you to the Allied driver Arnold that delivered my things and was communicative, and thank you to the crew from Hidalgo Movers that unloaded my things. It took three weeks for my things to get from Chicago to the Denver Metro Area. With how long it took, one would have thought I was moving from abroad. My things were finally delivered nine days after Federal Companies' estimated delivery period window. Federal Companies consistently blamed this long delay on the holidays. The representative from Federal Companies / Allied Van Lines that put together my estimate in the fall assured me there was availability during the end of the year and the holidays would not be a problem. I would have never booked a move during the holidays had I been truthfully informed about the potential impact the holidays could have on receiving my things. I would have scheduled the move in advance of the holidays or in the new year. I was assigned a Relocation Coordinator from Federal Companies upon signing the estimate contract document. Once I had paid for the move and the Chicago crew picked-up my things, the Relocation Coordinator stopped answering my outreach asking about delivery updates. I was finally able to get a response from a Federal Companies managerial level person about the status of my delivery. The poor customer service from Federal Companies continued when I had to be the one to reach out and ask for updates on my delivery from the managerial level person. Federal Companies should be providing the customer with regular updates, not the customer having to innate getting an update on the status of the delivery. The unresponsive Relocation Coordinator from Federal Companies finally responded to my outreach well over two weeks later with the canned response email thanking me for using Allied Van Lines / Federal Companies for my move. My move was not a priority for Federal Companies and Allied Van Lines. I had to pay in full for the move in advance of pick-up, they already had my money so there was no motivation to prioritize my move. I also feel that in being a smaller two-bedroom move, the priority customers are the larger moves. This should not be the case, I too am a paying customer, and paid almost $5,000 for my move. With my delivery being nine days after the estimated delivery period window, I am eligible to make a claim for $100/day via Allied Van Lines. Given the horrible experience, I am sure it will be a long and difficult process to recover those funds from Allied Van Lines. The Allied Van Lines and Federal Companies employees on the ground actually doing the work; loading and unloading and drivers provided great service. The office / business side of Federal Companies and Allied Van Lines; the representative that put together my estimate, the Relocation Coordinator, and the managerial level person from Federal Companies provided horrible customer service. I would never recommend anyone to use Federal Companies, Allied Van Lines, or any of their affiliates. read more

I recently moved from IL to FL and could not be happier with how Allied handled my move. When I first contacted them for an estimate, I got a callback from Paul within a few hours. He explained everything and had an estimate to me within a very reasonable time. Paul answered all my questions. I was stressed about some large items I had hoped to donate but couldn't because of the pandemic. Paul went over and above by finding a home for each of the items. This really took a load off my mind. My driver, Chris, was the ultimate professional. He contacted me several days before moving day to give me some tips to facilitate a successful move. On moving day, he arrived promptly when he had said he would. His crew, along with the packing team, we're polite and respectful of my stuff and of me. They were efficient and got things loaded up well before I expected. At the delivery end, my experience was just as positive. My significant other remarked, too, how professional the team was. I've heard so many horror stories about moving I was afraid to hire movers. Luckily, I found Paul Rubinsak through Allied Van Lines. This was a great experience. First of all, Paul is such a funny, kind, down to earth guy who assessed our belongings and fairly priced our long distance, cross country move. He set us up with a wonderful team of movers who were professional, light-hearted, and extremely easy to work with. They completed the move out process quickly and painlessly for us! Back in February we had to organize a move to northern Michigan and began the long research process of looking into a ton of movers. We came up with 4 final possibilities and began the process of doing estimates, additional research, and comparing the companies. Paul Rubinsak, the salesman came in with both bravado and professionalism and walked us through the process from head to toe. He made sure we understood how the process worked, gave us detailed information of the estimate, gave us a folder filled with information, and after the estimate checked in with us regularly. His quotes were fiercely competitive and we received 5 star service from Paul through the whole process. Paul put the other companies we were looking at to shame and made us feel like we were his most important client. When move in day showed up the movers were great. They worked hard but were laid back (in a good way) and most importantly, careful with all of our stuff. They did a great job packing our belongings and stayed positive during the move. Everything was well packed including electronics, dishes, etc. Nothing has been broken. My only constructive criticism was I was expecting someone to call me to work out the details of the move itself (after Paul but before the movers came). I had to reach out a couple times to ask follow up questions so we were ready for the day. That created a little anxiety, however when move in day came they were 5 stars all the way. We interviewed five large movers for our out of state move. Paul Rubinsak convinced us that the move was in good hands with Allied: all employees were background screened, the replacement insurance would cover any minor damage without any issue. The balance of our things were packed by a crew and loaded onto a truck, which then proceeded to sit in a warehouse in Chicagoland. The delivery was assigned to the last day of a four-day window (our stuff was already on the truck for a week). Then we were delayed a day; driver was sick. Then we were delayed another day because Allied booked the driver for the wrong date. Our delivery driver called us the day before the delivery; she was coming from St. Louis, driving to Chicago to pick up the load, then driving out to Iowa. The unloading crew of four was coming from Omaha, about 2 hours away. Driver doesn't arrive until almost noon. The unpacking crew is literally three (not four) random guys that the driver called up from a Native American reservation; no background checks, no drug checks. The crew didn't have any supplies (e.g., carrying straps). The driver attempted to put down plastic in house to save the carpeting but then didn't tape the plastic edges down (think slip and slide) before starting to move stuff into the house. One guy spent most of the day chatting up anyone who would listen; another guy asked my mother-in-law for a beer. The beer guy attempted to pick up a round coffee table and put it width-wise threw the rectangle front door, which was framed in brick...what was a new table was no longer a new table. These were NOT experience moving guys and had no idea how to unload and move furniture, let alone put it back together (first crew disassembled EVERYTHING unnecessarily). Our family ended up reassembling the furniture properly after the crew left. The packing done by the first crew - where to begin?! Two mattresses (including one that was 3 weeks old) were not in mattress boxes, but shrink wrapped and stood up on their sides in the truck with stuff stacked on top of them for over a week. They were crumpled like accordions. Pictures in expensive frames were packed without paper around them like sardines. A bar table was packed without padding around the base - just stacked in the truck - so the wood was chewed up but the time it was unloaded. The packing crew used tape to wrap plastic around a leather bed frame - and taped the bed frame in the process stripping the leather. The packing crew used wardrobe boxes for EVERYTHING. Why? Because 1) they cost more, and 2) monkeys could have packed better than these guys did. A 3' santa and reindeer was set into a wardrobe box without packing material around it, then leather coats laid on top of the reindeer antlers (scratching the leather). Everything from the garage was thrown into two wardrobe boxes that are now too heavy to move. We took out full replacement value insurance. We've spent months dealing with furniture and leather outfits hired by Sirva, only to have not a single piece appear as it did before. It's nine months post-move and our claim is still not resolved. Well, Sirva thinks it is, since they already cut us a low ball check (which we won't cash). I had to request an itemized breakdown of the dollar amount, and discovered that they omitted a 55" TV that no longer works (documented by Sirva's third party repair outfit) and only provided an appearance credit on the scratched treadmill. Don't worry, they don't pay for delivery charges or tax for the replacement furniture either! read more

They had an appointment and confirmed and didn't bother to call until the appointment was actually scheduled to be completed. Mike Keen lied and stated he had never confirmed the appointment, when I had received a call only hours before the appointment requesting to come out earlier. When I suggested they could have given me the courtesy of letting me know they would be late - I was given a long song and dance about how he called as soon as he could but that he never calls when he is in the middle of something else, and then proceeded to tell me I was unreasonable for having such expectations. With a lack of basic courtesy and professionalism - I would never use Federal Whalen as a company under any circumstances. If this is how they act for a simple quotation - I shudder to think about how they behave when it comes to an actual move. read more

OUTSTANDING SERVICE!! This was our first move out of state - they were excellent. Laura Huff was our estimator and helped us with planning the move out of state. Our driver and 2 helpers were nice, courteous and careful. We had to change our move destination during the process, as our original apartment was flooded. They were in constant communication with us throughout the process - Kristi Giovanelli did an outstanding job of helping us when we realized that we had to add on an additional destination. We did have a few items broken in the process and the customer service there was courteous and professional too. We were so pleased we selected them! read more

STAY AWAY! We used them for both home and corporate moves and cannot recommend them strongly enough. The salesman underbid all three jobs. The truck drivers and packers and loaders work their tails off and are overwhelmed at the job since they were never prepared for the actual amount of work due to the salesman's quote (the salesman is also the Sales Manager, Mike Keen). The General Manager, Mike Harvey, was unresponsive to multiple attempts when our belongings were not delivered - half of the corporate move was not shipped on time. Even the VP at their corporate office promised to "make it right" when we had to come out of pocket over $3,000 due to their mistakes. However, no follow up calls have been returned form him either - they just say what they think you want to hear. This company has something to learn about customer service and we are making it clear to everyone we know to stay away from Federal/Allied in Illinois. read more

Federal Whalen is a horrible company to deal with. They are affiliated with Allied Van Lines. I hired them to handle my recent move from Chicago to New England. My furniture arrived outside of the two-week window with significant damage. The movers on the Chicago end were a joke--spending seven hours to do what other have done in three. They caused significant damage to my building's stairwell. The delivery to New England was contracted out to another company. The driver for that company told me "it was disgraceful how Federal Whalen handled your merchandise." My dining room table came in pieces. The company is an absolute nightmare in every sense of the word. DO NOT HIRE THEM. read more
