Three giant meatballs from Venda Ravioli
    Dan R.

There's a beautiful full moon rising Above the mansion on the hill (Bruce Springsteen) Strolling down Atwells Avenue in the heart of Federal Hill is one amazing culinary experience. Both sides of the street are ringed with restauarants, specialty food stores, delis, and bakeries. We shopped in three stores and walked out with something from all three. Stop #1 - Tony's Colonial where we picked up a bag of Autumn Ravioli with sweet potatoes, pumpkin and squash. Stop #2 - Venda Ravioli where we picked up three giant meatballs, two soft as a pillow and intoxicating garlic scented breadsticks, a jar of Orange Pepper jam, and a container of pea ravioli. I had half a breadstick with that hot pepper orange jam for lunch and holy crap was it fantastic. Stop #3 - Scialo Brothers Bakery where we picked up one apple turnover, one blueberry turnover, one apple twist, one cinnamon twist, and two packages of chocolate macaroons. I know we'll be eating good this Week!!

The old Italian section of Providence filled with gourmet shops, bakeries & restaurants. It's next to I95, minutes from downtown & literally uphill. The businesses have been in this area since the 19 century. It's a nice evening to walk around and people watch. The Bakery's have beautiful breads in the windows as do the Italian restaurants.

The area is full of delicious restaurants and cool shops, but we felt a bit unsafe here at times.

I have never had a bad meal here, and I always try to be adventurous and try something new each time. With that being said, I always get an order of the Chongqing diced chicken. It is one of my fave dishes of all time (be warned, it is SPICY. Not for the faint of heart). The sauteed pig intestine with chili is another fave of mine. The dining area is spacious and cute, and the staff here is always incredibly nice and knowledgeable. Very helpful when there is a lot of dishes you might not be familiar with ! When we went inside, there was only one other party there and no music, so just whispers and the sounds of utensils against plates. There are about 4-5 booths and 1-2 regular tables to choose from. Since l am not familiar with Sichuan cuisine, I had Al help me choose my dishes. I went with the dumplings in chili sauce, fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce, and chongquin chicken. While we waited, we were given water. The dishes came out at different times. They first served us the dumplings which were really good. The sauce they were in did have some chili sauce, but it was mostly like a sweet soy sauce and really tasty. It came with about 6 dumplings with a perfectly cooked wrapper and filled with flavorful pork - simple but delicious. Next was the eggplant. I was expecting a heavy garlic presence, but it was more like a sweet and sour sauce. The eggplant was very tender, but really hot so we had to wait to let it cool down a bit. The rice came after. I honestly think this was one of my favorite dishes since it was perfectly cooked, great flavor, and good portion. Lastly, the chicken came out. There was a large pile of chicken, but half of it was peppers. The chicken was cut into little bite sized pieces, each fried perfectly. Some pieces were more tongue numbing than others but it was nothing aggressive; very gentle and comfortable numb. I would have liked if there were music, but the no music was fine too; an escape from chaotic reality. Our total was around $50, which wasn't bad for the amount of food we got. I would come back to try other items.

At first glance, you don't see much from Elmwood Ave, but veer to the right and everything opens up on the left, with a parking lot in the back. Ornate statues lead you to the entrance, and once inside you are instantly greeted with bold colors and beautiful art everywhere. I wanted to take the opportunity to try some Cambodian food, so after some quick research, I opted for Beef Lok Lak, which happened to be one of the lunch combos. I chose fried rice and nime chow for my lunch options and settled back to wait for my feast. They bring you a complementary pot of hot tea, which I enjoyed. I believe it was a straightforward unsweetened black tea. Perfect for me. Before long the rangoons arrived. I literally said "wow" when the runner set my plate down. Beautiful golden brown, small bubbles visible all over the outside, promising crispy goodness. And it delivered. What I didn't expect what the slight chewiness to the wrapper that enhanced the experience. The filling was super creamy and delicious, but I prefer my rangoons with scallions as well. However, that didn't stop me from enjoying every bite. Then my lunch came. The beef was perfectly cooked, the dressing tangy and peppery. The nime chow was herby and super fresh as it should be. And the rice had this extra depth of flavor that made me think of tomato paste? A lovely addition the dish. I had a great meal here and the rangoons are definitely worth having! I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more of their menu!!

For the longest, I thought Apsara on Hope St and this Apsara were the same owners, different locations but I was fooled. They are different, so I came on a Saturday evening with my friend to give this one a try. They have a parking lot but it is small. However, there is lots of street parking around. When we walked in, every table was full and we had to wait about 20-30 minutes to be seated. Since we had time to look at the menu while we waited, we ordered right away: BBQ beef, stir fried thin egg noddle with seafood, and thai garlic chicken wings. While waiting for the food, I had ample time to take in my surroundings, including all the elegant décor around the restaurant including a lot of red and gold colors. Our food came out all together after about 20-30 minutes. The portion sizes were excellent, and all the food was still hot. The beef was cooked perfectly (for me) and cut into manageable strips. It was tender, a hint of sweet, and savory. It came with some sweet pickled shaved radish, cabbage, and carrots with cucumber. This with the meat created a contrast in texture and amplified the sweetness. There was also a clear sauce and that was also really.good. The fried noodles were delicious. They were thin so it seemed like the flavor penetrated inside the noodle. It had a good amount of seafood including big chunks of imitation crab meat, shrimp, and something else I was unfamiliar with. It also had mustard leaves; they weren't bitter, they just had a neutral green leaf flavor (maybe spinach but stronger). The chicken wing order came with about 8 wings, sitting on a bed of cabbage and topped with jalapeno and chili peppers. They were still very hot and crispy, and had a savory and a subtle umelike flavor. I wish the garlic flavor were stronger. I am excited to come back again and try something new on the menu.

Good flavors and love that they have tofu / are accessible to other diets. I did think the dish was a little too oily but I still would get it again and have since I first tried. The honey cake is also delicious! They call it "not your average honey cake) but I've not had an average one to compare to, so the hunt continues lol. My only complaint is that all the dishware is plastic. I ordered one of the teas and the entire pot with the boiling water was plastic...not a fan of that.

I was expecting the typical thin rice noodle from a package but these were the real thing. They were thick and the perfect texture. It's like the thickness of udon but texture of rice noodle. It is a tad oily which makes sense because I think the sauce is made with chili oil. I also tried the honey cake. The cake is moist, and paired well with the ice cream. I did not put much of the honey on top because it was already really sweet as is. It was an enjoyable slice of cake to finish the meal off. Great place and delicious food! I would order here again but open to try their other items than re-ordering what I had today.

The thing I've always liked about LaMei is that they always have fresh options. For AYCE the portions are pretty good. I wasn't expecting to get as much as I did for an order, so something to think about when placing orders. Sometimes you might get a couple of lonely mushrooms or 3 green leaves for a serving of Bok Choy. That was not the case here. The fish and meats were fresh and if you opt for the VIP option, there are appetizers included to nibble on while you cook your other stuff. You also get some more premium options and the hand pulled noodles had a nice chew to them. The service was good. They were efficient with cleaning plates as we used them and the food came out quickly. The sauce station has all the staples you'd expect to assemble your sauce. The AYCE option makes things a bit more affordable, but even if you don't use it, the fresh food will make it worthwhile.

Quantity is a lot! It was very hot when we picked it up. For both the noodle dishes (pad thai and chow foon), I thought it's too oily. Yes, I know Chinese restaurant food is typically already very oily. But in these dishes, the oil might interfere with the flavor of the noodles as well, because I thought they were a little bland. Maybe it needs more light and dark soy sauce to balance the flavors more? But who am I to say, I'm not good at cooking noodles. For the pad thai, a sweet citrus-y sauce was included with the dish. It's not the usual fish sauce that other Asian RI restaurants give... and I don't think the sweet citrus sauce pairs with the pad thai very well. The wings were sweet tasting. While I think the food is decent, it can be improved. So, because I care about a restaurant's food more than anything else: three stars (it's ok; I may or may not order from here again) for the meal and experience we got. In addition, but not really important to the rating: parking is easy in the residential area behind. Or there is street parking in front (good luck because it's a busy street). Honestly, Atwells Ave would make a really nice No Cars, Pedestrians Only street.
