A group of 8 turning 40 decided to head to Russian River for hikes and rivers. 4 stayed at a place down the road that was twice the price, while 2 couples stayed at Fern Grove. So lovely! The breakfast included delicious scones and yogurt parfaits that made our other friends jealous We had studio cabin #22 and it was perfect. Bed was comfy and the bird theme was on point! Nice basic kitchen sink and mini fridge which helped with BBQ prep work. The cabin is located In the back so it felt secluded, but close to the yummy breakfast in the morning! Highly suggest Higher Ground Coffee which is a block away, behind the post office. read more

We decided to head up into the hills for thanksgiving break. Fern Grove helped us relax and really be comfy during our time in Guerneville. Our cottage smelled like cedar and was very clean. Comforting decor in the cottages and in the main house. We got number 9, the spa room. The spa was worth the extra $20ish. The host was really nice, kind, and informative. The breakfast was clearly home made and very delicious. It was the perfect atmosphere to get ready for a hike through Armstrong Woods. Parking was no issue, though it's not assigned. Nights were quiet even though there was a road right next to the cottage lot. Hopefully we can visit again soon or over the summer! read more

Oh my goodness this place is adorable. Just got home from a mom/daughter weekend and we LOVED place. Breakfast in the garden everyday was so peaceful and we multiple hummingbirds also eating breakfast in the bird feeders. The location is also perfect because you're right near downtown Gurneville and if you don't feel like walking a couple blocks, you can borrow one of the super cute beach cruisers for free! There's also a fire pit outside to warm up on foggy evenings. All Cottages have quaint little decks where you can enjoy the smell of the redwoods with a lovely cup of coffee/tea on a quiet morning. The Cottages are great but honestly Margaret makes this place extra special. Everything she recommended was spectacular. She told us she did the whole Sonoma cheese trail (over 100 miles long) to make sure she recommends only the best to her guests-what a committed concierge! Margaret's quality hosting skills have made me a loyal customer. I pretty much refuse to stay anywhere else now and can't wait to bring my husband back soon! read more

Many thanks to Jenny & Sherman for a wonderful stay! My wife and I spent four wonderful days at the Cottages for our anniversary. Everything was superb! The cottages were nestled in the redwoods, and exuded that super cozy, country cabin setting. The room was very clean and well appointed. The surrounding landscaping was beautiful and well-maintained. The continental breakfast was scrumptious, especially the scones Jenny makes from scratch! (She was such a delight to speak with!) We enjoyed this meal in their well laid-out courtyard complete with a large BBQ and a very nice firepit. The location was perfect for us as we were able to easily walk to almost all of the places we wanted to visit. We strongly recommend a stay at the Fern Grove Cottages. read more

Went for a family reunion in June 2023 and had a blast; I'm sure the place was glad to see us go. Fern Grove was purchased by Dawn Ranch across the street and has redone the cottages; bathrooms are great. For breakfasts, we had to cross a busy highway to get to Dawn Ranch; I'm sure that will change in time. The small two person cottages are tiny and none of them have a TV which I require for keeping up with the news and ambient noise. The staff is outstanding and this is a good resort. read more

I stayed in the cottages with my mom for 4 days. We absolutely loved it! Guerneville has really cute restaurants with great food. The Main Street Bistro even has live jazz on Fridays and Saturdays. The Armstrong Redwood Forest is 5 minutes away, and the coast is about 30 minutes away. The cabin itself was clean and cozy, with a fire place inside for heat. Hubby and I spent three nights with another couple in a two bedroom (each with a private bathroom) joined by a common living room cottage. It was wonderful! The bedrooms were completely private, and we couldn't hear each other at all when our doors were closed. Coffee was available an hour before breakfast, or we could have made coffee in our room if we wanted it earlier. Breakfast was abundant and delicious! We ate our fill of fresh fruit, homemade granola, hard boiled eggs, vanilla yogurt, homemade breads, and an assortment of other breads and bagels with all the accompaniments. We also took advantage of the wine passport, with hot tips from Jenny for the best wineries. We saved $140/couple on wine tastings with this complimentary perk. There are many other reasons to treat yourself to this excellent bed and breakfast, but we didn't take advantage of the saline pool, bikes, DVDs or games so I can't really tell you much about them. Very cute and cozy cabins. Very well maintained and lush gardens that make you feel like you are transported to a far off land. Convenient to just about everything you would want in the area. Nice pool for the kids, warm and spacious. The only drawbacks are that there is a small garden area with a single outdoor fire pit that unfortunately is a few feet from the smoking area and smokers where there the entire time except for a very short period, making is unusable for a family with children. I would think in our day, especially during a pandemic they would not allow smoking on the small property. In fact it is so compact you will smell the smoke nearly anywhere in the garden areas, a sad fact. The breakfast was disappointing and existed of homemade scones and a yogurt cup with granola and coffee. Not much to accommodate kids in that area, not even any type of juice. I suppose it's all they can do. The owner, lady, was very nice and easy to deal with. All in all a nice getaway for a couple, not so much a family. If smoking was not permitted it would definitely be a nice getaway. read more

A cute little cottage property, great for a weekend away in the woods. Easily located off Hwy 116, only 1 minute drive from "downtown" shops and a large Safeway. Walk next door or less than 5 minute stroll to several cute little options for food & dining. The owners/operators are SO WELCOMING! Great owners pointed out how to get to local attractions like the Russian River (5 min walk), the Pacific Ocean (20 min drive), the Redwoods (10 min drive to State Park). The owners make the scones every morning for the continental breakfast, yum. The courtyard is darling with trees, strung lights, big fire pit, and comfy chairs. The cottages themselves are a bit dated but cute and cozy. The bed was comfortable and not saggy or old, nice and firm. Lots of pillows, and the night breeze coming in the windows at night was so refreshing on our summer visit. Wine glasses, microwave, & mini-fridge provided with TVs and fire stoves and fans, and private bathrooms in each bedroom (cottage 14 & 15 have 2 bedrooms with private baths each). Dog friendly, handicap accessible. You'll love the shade of the trees, the flowers in the garden, and the great pool deck with good seating for hanging out and talking with family & friends. read more

Great little kitchy place in good 'ole Guerneville! There were a lot off "pluses" to these little cabins: big, spacious floor plans, a delicious homemade breakfast, and free Internet (which came in QUITE handy when I challenged my roommate to a bet about Gin Rummy rules at 1 am). The BEST part though, was the decor. OH, the decor! We were in a western/cowboy themed room (Lazy Bear Weekend anyone?). The walls were covered in spurs, belts and other goodies which we promptly removed from the walls and proceeded to have a fashion show and photo op with. read more

In reading through the other reviews, I'm really surprised that no-one has mentioned the wi-fi. Anyone who has stayed in Guerneville knows that it's damn near impossible to get a signal up there. There are a number of properties up there that claim to have free wi-fi, but... really. I mean, I get it, Mom. It's a beautiful locale and I should be outside enjoying nature, but at some point, I really am going to have to check my email. And post all my new pics to Facebook. Let's face it, if I don't put it on Facebook, did it really happen? The property is pretty nice, the flowers are always pretty, and the beds are comfy. I'm kind of a space cadet sometimes (most of the time)...and I recently committed a huge blunder that almost had me, my sister, her boyfriend and my (very understanding)man sleeping on the mean streets of Guerneville. My sister and her man, visiting from the East Coast, wanted to experience California winetasting and the epic highway 1. I thought what better place experience both of these marvelous things then Guerneville. Using Yelp, I found The (deservedly) highly rated Fern Grove Cottages. I reserved a cabin online FOR WHAT I THOUGHT was Saturday night. Done and done. Two weeks pass: my sister, her boyfriend, my man and I are cruising up the 101, discussing our tasting options. I wonder when we need to check in by, dial up Fern Grove and the owner answers. Then she deals me the blow, "You reserved for Sunday night, not Saturday". My heart sinks, I finish the rest of the conversation in whispers so as to not freak out my fellow travelers... (paraphrasing) "Oh my god, I'm so sorry, this is totally my fault. I need to find somewhere for the four of us to sleep-do you know anywhere?? Please!!!" I plead in whispers. "Well luckily we have a rental open across the street but it being the weekend we are going to have to charge you the premium rate" "Uhhh...what's the premium rate?"(imagining $700/night) "$375/night" That's all!?? For four people/two bedrooms/kitchen/deck with grill and views of the river!!!!?? Awesome. Right down the street from Safeway so you can get your fixings for grilling. The woman that runs Fern Grove Cottages is awesome, not only did she save my ass, she worked hard to assemble a pack of cards from her old bridge cards because the rental was lacking one. The rental was clean, quiet and would have easily accommodated several more. I will definitely be returning to Fern Grove the next time I am in Sonoma and hopefully I will be lucid enough to reserve the correct night. read more

Cozy little place. The sign makes it look more scandalous and cheesy than it really is (which was a little disappointing to me). But, there's still the light up stained glass duck that's built into the headboard, so that added some kitsch factor for me. We got the room with the private spa. AWESOME! It was so nice to open some wine and relax with it in the bubbles...I'll stop there, the rest is my b'ness. The breakfast was delicious-lots of yummy granola, scones, and danishes. I would never reccomend staying at these "cottages", ever, under any circumstance. This is the "dive-bar" of cottages in the Russian River. We visit the river atleast 3-4 times a year, and I now even cross the road to avoid walking by this place, such bad memories, I've even changed my morning coffee routine since my cafe was next door. Seriously bad ju-ju. The location is right on River Road so its loud no matter which room they put you in. Locals party here, all-night. The first time I stayed here it was meh, fine, loud and druggy party neighbors but pretty dirt cheap for the area so you get what you pay for. I've since had 2 horrible experiences with this place, both of which could have easily been remedied by the Manager Annie or the Owners, however its been my experience these people are rude, rude, prideful, short-sighted and down right, did I mention rude, the moment you bring a problem to their attention. I have no idea how they have so many good reviews, other than remembering the types of people that stayed in neighboring rooms. The scones are day-old and therefore mediocre at best, especially for the area people. Who bases their review on the scones?! Anyway, trust me, anywhere else but here. read more

I've stayed here a few times now. This place is super awesome and very cozy. I've stayed at a few other places in this area for vacation, and I can say Fern Grove is very fairly priced and for a weekend on the Russian River, this place is close to it all! It's right off the high way and in walking distance to the downtown area. It also won't break your budget. Some nights require a 2 night stay, but talking to the proprietor and finding out about last minute cancellations, it's possible to only do a one night stay, especially if you just want to experience Sonoma and want to travel around from area to area. I stayed here just before Labor Day in 2010. They really do hospitality right. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, and it made us feel at home - really important for a bed and breakfast where you eat your homemade morning scones with the other guests - the owners really set a nice tone. Everybody went out of their way to help us (with extra keys, band-aids for hiking blisters, winery and restaurant recommendations). The concierge even stayed after front desk hours to help us make reservations at a restaurant. The cottages themselves were just fine for the price. We had a studio with a spa bath - nothing extra fancy, but private and cozy. What they don't tell you is that there isn't a door between the bathtub and the bedroom, so it's not exactly a room that you could share with just a friend. We didn't exactly have an entire cottage to ourselves; our studio was half of a duplex, but it felt private and we didn't notice any sound from any of our neighbors. read more

Margaret is the lovely lady working the front desk (and owner?) when we checked in and left. She was extremely helpful in providing winery information and was very knowledgeable of what kind of wines each one offered. She gave us coupons to use at Korbel which is down the road and a card with wineries that are part of a program with certain bed and breakfast offering complimentary wine tasting! This was great since one of the wineries was going to charge due to a recently policy change but honor the complimentary tasting once I mentioned Margaret. Margaret also took the time to tell us about the area and gave honest recommendations for the local eateries. Turns out Applewood, a Michelin rated restaurant was down the street. She did call them to see if there was an opening but the only one was in 15 minutes and we couldn't make it due to needing to shower after horseback riding. The room, # 11, was a duplex (one wall connected to a neighbor) it was a cozy cottage fitting one bed, desk with table, Jacuzzi tub and small bathroom. (no shower but shower hose in tub with no curtain) Great fit for us since we adventure out all day and just rest when we were there. Everything was clean and bed very comfortable. Breakfast is continental, there are a few homemade items such as fresh baked scones, cinnamon granola. Not sure but the jam and yogurt may have been homemade (and tasty too). There were bagels with cream cheese and so on which must have been store bought but tasty none the less. I would recommend this place just make sure you book ahead and not end up like the snobbish couple demanding a room from off the street that I ran into during check in. read more

How great is this place? It's fantastic! Go west on River Road from Hwy 101 and head toward Guerneville, CA. River Road turns into Hwy 116 once you get to town. Keep heading east and just past the Safeway, you'll run right into Fern Grove Cottages on the right-hand side. It's located well within walking distance of food and shopping. You'll need a vehicle to get to the river and Armstrong Woods. The cabins are so cute and very well maintained. My friends stayed in the western-themed cabin on the back side of the property complete with wi-fi and a big indoor spa. They loved that! The property was exquisitely landscaped and had a great outdoor pool area. They offer a wonderful breakfast every morning as well. Margaret and Co. really took care of my friends during their recent stay here. If you want a nice, quiet and comfortable spot to get away from it all, then this is the place to go. read more

We stayed here for one night during a week long bike ride trip. Even though the location was a bit shaded (which was not surprising given the name) the cottages were spacious and full of charm. My wife and I enjoyed reading on the porch of our room, soaking in our room's large Jacuzzi tub, and laying by the property's salt water pool. The "extended continental" breakfast was good. Definitely much better than a chain's hotel continental breakfast, but based on the description was expecting more variety on the homemade items. I believe the only homemade pastries were the one batch of scones and the jams. A couple more varieties and quantity of the homemade goods would earn a 5 star rating. Trying to find a cute place to stay can be kind of difficult when you're as picky as we are. We want clean and cute, at a decent rate, the more interesting the better, but something with style and good taste. This sweet little vacation spot was built as a motor inn in the 20's. Have you ever seen "It Happened One Night?"- yeah, like that, except with an indoor shower and (unfortunately) no Clark Gable. The cottages have different themes and amenities, such as spa tubs, fireplaces, etc. The decor is adorable.. imagine staying at your uncle's cabin in the redwoods- comfy couch, all wood paneling, lil' roosters everywhere and the entire placed smelled like campfire. Mmm..mmm... good. The room was clean and cozy, the fireplace worked great and the bed was soft and comfy. But best of all were the treats... the cheese and wine pairing starts at 4:30, and this ain't no 2 buck chuck. It was a great red (with a white option that we didn't try), paired with a delicious blue cheese or goat cheese, and walnuts roasted in olive oil, sea salt and rosemary. (I had to stop my roommate from basically stealing the whole spread to take back to our room.) Most everything laid out was locally produced, which was a neat introduction to the area's treats. The next morning the continental breakfast included fresh, warm, homemade cranberry scones that WERE TOO DIE FOR, the usual assortment of bread and bagels with delicious homemade jams, as well as fruit, yogurt and another awesome treat- homemade granola. Oh, and the coffee snob amongst us (and *what* a snob, too) was pleased with the coffee offering as well. Quite a rare feat. The innkeeper, Margaret was an excellent hostess with the ability to make you feel welcomed and at home, without a ton of overly intrusive chit chat. Overall, we found Fern Grove very charming, with excellent amenities and the rarity of being a quality place without pretense. We will definitely try and go back again, the off season rate was a steal, but it'd be worth it at peak as well. read more

This place was beautiful! Me & my boyfriend went on a 5 day trip up to SF, Sonoma, Guernville, & then back down to Santa Barbara...& this is one of our favorite places we stayed! The room was very quaint & cozy, the location was goooorgeous (right in the middle of the woods). And we happened to get there the night of the Christmas Parade, which the lady at the front desk told us about! In the morning we drove 3 minutes to the Redwoods for a hike! This place is great. We reserved a cottage mid week in June for my partners birthday. The check-in receptionist was nice and offered to help find restaurants, activities, etc. Our cottage was totally decked out in cowboy gear. Makes you feel away from home -and get into the spirit of the vacation. There are cute gardens, and decks to enjoy the weather.The pool is nice and there is even a bbq pit if you dont want to walk the short distance to some good restaurants. If it gets too cold go inside some have gas fireplaces and a mini kitchen. The continental breakfast surely cant be missed. Margeret came around and said hello to her guests as we ate homemade scones, pastries, granola and fresh fruit. To top it off they allow pets and for an extra $15 our dog enjoyed the cottages with us. Everything was great and we will definately go back again. It is actually in Guerneville, but Yelp wouldn't let me put it as the city. read more

On a complete whim Saturday night I decided to do a quick trip up to the Russian River Valley on Sunday/Monday. (Okay, so it wasn't purely a whim, there might have been some Fernet involved). The Russian River is possibly my favorite California AVA...certainly the only appellation making consistently good Pinots. So at around 1 AM, I find myself back at my potential companion's place trying to find accommodations for the following night using her incredibly weak, pirated wifi signal. She works at google, so in an attempt to get her options back above water I followed a sponsored link to russianriverinns.com which featured the Fern Grove Cottages. The photos seemed OK, and the prices were reasonable so I took a leap of faith and booked it without any research into other options...like I said, a very weak wifi signal. Besides, I'm at a smart, sarcastic and super hot girl's house after a night of moderate drinking, and I'm well aware that the effects of alcohol wear off...there's only so much time I'm going to spend on the interweb, right? So we roll up to the RRV on Sunday afternoon, and the closer I get to Guerneville the more apprehensive I become about my lack of research. To further delay the moment of truth, we stop at the Safeway for some wine trip essentials: bread, cheese, sparkling water and Ben & Jerry's. My apprehension is now approaching outright fear that I've managed to find ANOTHER remodeled Travelodge with cute Internet pictures (like I did my first trip to Paso Robles). Upon making the left out of the Safeway I see it: a great big gaudy sign with an arrow saying "Fern Grove Cottages," complete with the neon vacancy sign underneath and the mention of the AAA discount. While I don't actually throw up in my mouth a little, I do have to fight the urge. Another object lesson in not judging a book by it's cover. This place is really pretty great. Close to the river, close to the redwoods, close to the coast...really an ideal location. The staff was incredibly helpful with restaurant recommendations and the breakfast spread was solid. Now I had made a conscious decision to not get the room with the spa tub for two (I've generally found that they aren't as enticing in reality as they seem when booking). So rather than the western themed place we were in a room with a HEAVY wine/grape decor motif...not really surprising, but a little overdone. Now that I know, next time I'm going for the room with the saddle! Another major plus is that Fern Grove is dog friendly. While I had originally planned on bringing Sonny along I decided at the last moment not to make this trip a threesome. Sometimes *I* find it a little disconcerting to wake up in the middle of the night to find him staring at me...not sure how someone else might take it. But my next trip he'll be coming along which makes Fern Grove the odds on favorite for my lodging. read more

Vacation at last! Cool breezes, good friends, peace and quiet. Ahhhhhh Fern Grove is my fairty tale vision of vacation. Tucked in the redwoods, cute little cottages-each with a different theme, offer wood stoves or fireplaces, some with skylights--great to see the stars and the trees. All have little porches-perfect for morning coffee or afternoon wine. Former owners served a wonderful English style breakfast, with wonderful scones, homemade granola, fruits, yogurt-pleasant way to start the day. Coffee is always on, and the staff (especially Annie!) is knowledgeable, friendly and extremely helpful. If you want restaurant and winery tips, as well as the best spots on the river, of suggestions for a massage-Annie can do it all! Perfect in any season-but, we love mid-summer best. read more

Overall, the grounds and cabins remind me of photos my parents have of their honeymoon in the Adirondacks in 1963. So if you go for that kind of kitsch, this is your place. Really, it is quite pleasant, tucked away in the redwoods off the highway. I really enjoyed filling up a breakfast tray in the morning and eating back at the cabin in the fresh air. Pluses of this place include the privacy, the quiet, the smell of the trees, and the amount of space in the 1-bedroom. During off-season, the cabins seem like a good deal. Before November, however, prices are higher, and at $209 for one night, it would be nice to have more comfortable pillows and softer bath towels. Just those little touches that make it seem worth the money. And the vintage ad for Colt revolvers in the bathroom is just plain creepy. I'd love to see what the other cabins look like. If they just got a handle on the decor and the linens, I'd recommend without hesitation. read more
