It's such a great feeling when a place truly feels welcoming --when the people you see regularly start to feel more like friends than staff. Because of that familiarity, I sometimes forget to slow down and acknowledge just how hard these ladies work. Every visit, they show up with genuine smiles and a clear dedication to doing their jobs well--and it shows. Shannon, the Shift Manager (pictured), and Dez, the Property Manager (not pictured), do a fantastic job hosting the weekly drawings and always manage to make them fun and engaging. Jen, the bartender (not pictured), will happily serve up your beer, spirits, or whatever your poison of choice may be--hopefully they've got your favorite on hand. And last but definitely not least, Maria (PM) (pictured) deserves a huge shout-out for keeping the casino floor and restrooms absolutely spotless. It never goes unnoticed. The casino itself is non-smoking, which is a big plus, but there is a designated smoking area out back. In the winter, the fireplace adds a really nice, cozy touch. Between the weekly drawings, men's and women's appreciation days, swipe/free play days, and bingo, there's always something going on. I would rate 0 stars if could! Don't waste your time coming here! I was hanging out with a close friend when we got "cut off" yet was given no context as to why. We were laughing and having a good time gambling yet when I ordered another drink the old lady behind the bar said she'd give me coffee or water because I was "done" drinking. The bartender she relieved we tipped every time she brought us a drink yet for what reason told the old lady that I'd had enough. Excuse me!?!? A man sat next to us at one point and started a fight with me because he pretended to be a vet and said that all women in the military should be raped, they deserve to be punished and have no place being in the military. Upon bringing up this to the manager, the "manager" did absolutely...you guessed it...NOTHING!!! She informed me that her husband was a vet for whatever reason that had nothing to do with my report, and totally didn't care that that "man" who made that comment TO A FEMALE VETERAN was not kicked out of the establishment and nothing was done about it. I was the one who was "cut off" from drinking when I was not drunk at all and I was kicked out. What a joke! Never come here if you're a fellow veteran and have any respect for yourself your friends. We saw an eagle, hawks aplenty, a few antelope and hundreds of songbirds as we made the drive on the bucolic byways from Bend OR to Fallon NV. We saw mountains and prairies and marshes and rivers and huge lakes and magnificent canyons and ranches and farms, including a big goat farm that make me yearn to go pet the critters. But in the last five hours of the nearly eight hour drive we saw not one bathroom. Not a single one. We might have braved going in to the Nixon Store in woefully sad Nixon NV right outside the destitute and nearly deserted Pyramid Lake Reservation. But the big cinder block building without windows seemed too much of a gamble to go in and ask if they had a loo to use. So imagine how delighted we were to enter Fernley and see this little Nugget Casino with the friendly exterior that even had a sign for their neighbor in the building, Black Bear Diner, and full sized carvings of wood bears sitting at a picnic table. We pulled right over and in we went. Casino's have bathrooms! We found a nearly new casino - and here's the important part for us - large, sparkling clean bathrooms. I Not to mention very friendly folks who worked there and said hello as we helped ourselves to a cup of their freshly brewed and free coffee poured into a big ceramic mug that we sipped as we donated $5 to their cause by playing video poker at one of the many gaming machines. Machines only, no tables here. This is a more subdued atmosphere casino, we mean that in a positive way, and the folks there seemed largely locals and larger older. Then again, it was only about 4:30. We looked inside the Black Bear which was true to the nature of this small chain of restaurants - homey, sparkling clean, friendly greeter and pie displayed prominently in the glass goodie case at the entry. Pie seems the perfect vacation "fuel" to me but we were on our way without testing it out here. But you can do a lot worse for food in unknown places than a Black Bear Diner. EQUAL ACCESS (accessibility) NOTE:: perfectly accessible from parking through every space in the place. Universal access design gotten right. My Yelp friends and others who rely on wheelchair access will want to know that. A smoking note: none allowed here and my friends who are smokers will want to know that. Bottom line is we'd recommend this little place for a quick stop or a longer stop. read more

We went to Black Bear Diner last night for an RC Club meeting. They serve beer and wine in the Restaurant but attached to the diner they have The Nugget Casino with a bar. I was told that the servers do not bring mixed drinks into the restaurant but that if I wanted to go get one I could. That wasn't a big deal so I went to go get a cocktail. Upon going to the Bar, I asked how much was a well rum and coke. It was definitely a good price I was told $2.50 I said I will take it. The bartender who was a short, older blonde lady (I wish I had got her name) made my drink. Mind you when she started making my drink, I pulled out my debit card and was standing there with it in my hand waiting for her to finish. When I presented my card to her, she said, "I need cash' it wasn't nice it was short and rude like. I apologized and said I don't have cash. She then said, "We don't take cards". She rolled her eyes and gave a rude horrible loud huff/sigh and threw the drink from where I was standing into the sink halfway across the bar. I was WOW'ed, in my head I was like OK then YIKES and went back to the diner. If she had directed me to where I could have found an ATM or been nicer, I would have asked one of the people I was with if they had $3.50 in cash so that I could pay for the drink and leave a tip, but this lady was obviously having a bad day. and clearly should not have been working in a customer service position. It would be nice if the Bar took Cards or if the waiter could have just added the drink to our tab and got it. This would have saved me from a terrible experience with the Nuget's bartender and would have given them some more money instead of wasting inventory. Another thing that could have stopped all this is to have a sign at the bar that says we accept cash only or if the bartender had mentioned (in this day and age) before making the drink we only accept cash, no cards, is that ok? Customer service and quality/inventory control is a big thing in the food/bar industry. Making sure that you're not pouring a drink to put in the sink is a good strategy. I told the waiter that the bar is cash only he said he wasn't aware of that so I think that the wait staff in the diner could be trained to know this would also help in the future. So, if you are wanting a great dining experience, go to the Black Bear Diner but make sure that if you go to the bar Bring Cash!! read more

This is not a bad place to gamble. It is smoke-free, but it's not a problem because they have an outdoor lounge with a fireplace, a bench, chairs and table, a man-made fountain, speakers that are playing 80's music, and plenty of ashtrays. It's a nice smoking area. Inside they have a restaurant (Black Bear Diner) and every time I've ordered food there, I was not disappointed. The machines are just like any casino. I generally have found that when I go in the daytime and early evening, I win, but if I go late at night I'm the only one in there playing, the place is dead, and I lose! They have no table games but there is a poker area and they used to have tourneys on the weekends - not sure if they still do. The Nugget owns 3 casinos in Fernley. The Jackpot Crossing, The Wigwam, and The Fernley Nugget, so sometimes you'll see an employee at one of them that used to be at one of the other two. There's a woman (see review of Jackpot Crossing) who used to be at Jackpot that treats customers badly. I KNOW I'm not the only one but if she doesn't like you, you'll have a rough time with promos, and you won't win a hot seat if she can help! Her name is Sonia. I was disappointed to find that Sonia is now at The Nugget. She is rude and brash and should NOT have a job that entails making a customer feel comfortable and happy. I received a card in the mail that said if you are there on New Year at 12:15, you could win 1 million points. It is my opinion that "Sonia" would never process my name if the computer named me the winner but I went anyway and STILL had a good time. She needs to GO and they should get someone more professional that has no grudges. read more

The service isn't terrible, but the machines are less friendly than the Pioneer or the Silverado and i found out AFTER I lost quite a bit of money you can't even vape there. Im a vet with PTSD and the vape helps a lot with anxiety. I felt discriminated against and unwanted for having PTSD and serving this nation. I'll never be back. The Pioneer is better, and you can vape there and they appreciate veterans. read more

The morning bartender DREW is by far the worst bartender I've ever dealt with. Walks everywhere like a sloth and doesnt pay attention to customers or drinks. I work over 70 hours a week I just want a beer or two not one beer every hour. Worst bartender ever. read more

The Fernley Nugget is fast moving up the list as a regular go-to even though my parents often report it doesn't play as well as some of the others in town. Well this last time that didn't seem to be a problem for me of course it changes from day to day. I'm still loving the smoke-free environment and who doesn't love Black Bear Diner next door?! I could not say enough about the staff. I came to deal with my step dad passing and moving my mother to Fernley Estates. My mom loves this smoke free place. She could not wait for me to meet everyone there. The staff take very good care of her and do their best to help her out to her car and when she moves around the casino. They make sure they move her drink as she moves and always check on her. She especially loves Drew. The last night I was in town, my daughter and I had no place to stay. The best western triple booked our room. We went in to the casino so we could work on our laptop, gamble alittle and have a drink. As the staff heard about us not having a room they (Steve) offered to see if he could get a room in Fallon. All rooms were booked in Fernley. Pat had her son bring us snacks because the Bear was closed. I spent 6 weeks in Fernley to get my mom moved. We spent a lot of time at the nugget and the customer service was always outstanding. Cannot believe we walked into a Nugget we loved! Smoke free, good music, clean, complimentary beverages. Had a Black Bear Diner next door, also smoke free, and a nice friendly bar. My only complaint (but I'm not going to ding down the stars because everything else was top notch) is I like to play $1.00 slots and couldn't find one. But I did find one lonely .25 slot and won on that!!!! read more

What a terrific experience! We stayed in Reno, but came to Fernley for the smoke-free casino experience. We're not big gamblers but we stayed a long time enjoying the clear air and the surprisingly nice machines. It took me about 3 hours to go through my first $20 on the video poker machine (I'm not an expert). My wife played the slots and actually came out ahead after 2 hours! I should also mention that next door is the Black Bear Diner--we had three meals there (came through a second day after visiting Pyramid Lake). The second time through we split a meal--portions are huge as well as delicious. We will definitely be going back. Winning money isn't guaranteed, but the ambiance is terrific. read more
