Stumbled upon this place through yelp while I was in the area craving for Mexican food! I'm rating the quality of the food and give it 4 stars! We ordered their new Carne Asada Curly Fries. I love Carne asada fries so I wanted to try something different and came here for the curly fries. I asked for no jalapeños and guacamole so it just came with nacho cheese, cotija cheese, and sour cream. Boyfriend ordered their Surf 'n Turf curly fries! For the location and building itself, I would give it 2 stars because the parking area is structured in an odd way, the salsa bar is very small, the entrance is right where everyone orders so it can get very crowded easily, however there are a lot of areas to sit inside. Last but not least, if you pay with card, you have to tip them and there are options. I couldn't put no tip because I'd feel bad but I mean how do you know what to tip them depending on their service when you are barely ordering? I came here based on the Yelp reviews. I was hesitant because of the vast majority of people that recommended things like curly fries. I was not interested in tex-mex Arby's. I had the machaca breakfast plate. It was good. Nicely seasoned beef, tasty onions and peppers, the eggs were a bit dry but all in all very good. Not too greasy which was good. The beans were standard which means delicious. I asked for crispy potatoes and they complied. However, the meal was supposed to come with tortillas which I wasn't given (I didn't realize until I get home and started to chow down). The mild red salsa on the bar is not mild, it has a substantial kick, so don't feed it to your salsa loving toddler. This place is a true hole-in-the-wall. It's kind of a dump. The bathroom is outside, tiny and dirty. The whole joint needs a makeover pronto. I most likely won't let that deter me from coming here again but seriously folks, a little bleach and some new paint wouldn't hurt. Last, and the true reason I will return, is for the tortilla chips. They come in a sealed plastic bag to maintain freshness. I personally like this so much! Way better than the fresh from the grill chips which are then thrown into a styrofoam container, which melts said container and in effect gives me a side of cancer with my Mexican meal...but, I digress. This taco shop has become my fiance's and my go-to spot for Mexican food. Actually when my fiance first brought this home, I was shocked by how much I liked it. The first burrito I got here was the Surf and Turf burrito, a mixture of shrimp, steak, rice, and chipotle cream sauce. The proteins were cooked well and not overcooked- as is often in burritos, and the chipotle cream sauce brought amazing balance to the burrito. It gave a uniform creaminess that brought everything together and allowed the shrimp and steak to actually get along on your tastes buds. They have 5 sauces of varying degrees of heat that each bring their own flavor profile to a meal, our favorite is the red sauce. We have also liked all of their burritos that have their guacamole in them. Their guacamole is extremely refreshing and creamy. It also brings consistency to the burrito and they actually try to spread it through the burrito rather than have it all piled up on one side of it. We have also liked their fries. They are not overly crispy, but the amount of stuff they stack on top of it makes them like nachos so you tend to eat them with a fork anyway. If you like the burritos then you will like the fries. I ordered my burrito, mind you there was only one other person there who ordered after me. When i got home and cut the burrito in half, i was disappointed to find that I somehow ended up with an overly fried shrimp burrito, as opposed to the california burrito i ordered and was looking forward to. Ferny's is seriously the best Mexican food I know. And I grew up in Spring Valley, which I believe says a lot. They not only have a ton of options but creative ones, too. Do you want do you want curly fries instead of standard? They can do that. Chilaquiles burrito with no eggs? They can do that. They not only accommodate, but they don't make mistakes. Even if they did, I know they'd take care of it because their staff is always, ALWAYS pleasant. I tend to get a burrito with beans, rice, fries, and guac. The flavor of every component is good, but also worth mentioning, the texture, too. They have a strategy for their fries that is obviously working for them: I can eat my burrito 30+ minutes after picking it up, and the fries inside are STILL crispy and flavorful. There's no turning to mush whatsoever. Everything is on point. The salsa bar deserves a paragraph of its own. I will have to upload a good picture if nobody has already. They have options on top of options on top of options. Seriously, like 5 options or something crazy, along with amazing spicy carrots and peppers, etc. Sure, I enjoy some of the salsas more than others, but honestly, each and every one is good. They have some food options you'd expect to see, and others that are far more interesting. After driving past this place for years, my friend told me I should check it out and that everything he has ordered from here has been excellent. So in the middle of December I gave it a try. I kid you not when I tell you this, other than a couple days around Christmas and New Years, I have eaten here every. Single. Day. Since December. And I will be going again tomorrow. I am in training so eating the same meals everyday make it much easier for tracking my macros and if the food is good that comes easy. I started with the carne asada burrito. The meat is seasoned perfectly. The guacamole is very good and doesn't have onions or tomatoes (which is better for me). The tortillas are big and soft. I have since moved on to the pollo asada burrito which is my new favorite. My favorite part is either the crispy edges I sometimes get on the meat or the hot red sauce that is so damn good. I have had those items and also rolled tacos, beef tacos, and the Ferny burrito (California burrito basically) and every single one was delicious. Really you eat there EVERYDAY and it's always good? Yes. Yes it is. And if you consider that I have eaten there at least once a day for 60 days or so, they have only made a mistake on my order one time. I'd say that is pretty good. In fact most of the girls know my order when I walk in the door and ask me if that is what I am going to have. And that is the other thing, they are always polite and greet me with a smile and always tell me to have a good day on my way out. I appreciate that from an establishment when I spend my hard earned dollars there I've never met Ferny but you have put together a great restaurant with good quality food and a warm staff.
