The chocolate desserts are scrumptious, but the specialty drinks are odd, especially the one with buffalo grass vodka. The weeds and dried flowers in the drink stick in your teeth. In the past, menu items have been too small and not easily shared. But atmosphere is good. read more

The Fiddlehead is unapologetically 'haute cuisine' with a decent selection of wines, beers and fancy, rare libations. Interestingly, the menu changes daily, as the local meats, cheeses and produce the chef insists on using become available. My Jumbo shrimp mole' with Oaxacan cheese entre' featured 'GINORMOUS' shrimp and the sauce was subtle, rich and authentic. Everything on the menu which my wife and I tried was pricey but superb! Stopped in Friday with my fiancé. We were visiting to hike. We picked this place as walking distance to our hotel and based on the reviews. We missed the other yelp suggestions to make a reservation but were greeted and were happy to sit at the bar - which is our preference anywhere! Bartender was great! She explained any questions we had and was not rude or pushy as we were drinking alcohol. We had the Curry mussels, butternut squash soup, cheese plate and shared the tacos (fancy tacos!) Everything sourced locally. Everything was spectacular. Food amazing and not one complaint (and we are foodies) Best of all. She didn't rush us out and place was packed! What a great find in the Adirondacks! Unfortunately. Dining up here can be hit or miss, This charming bistro came highly recommended from friends in Lake Placid and we are glad we came Cute building, creative menu, thoughtful wine list. We started with excellent cocktails, a delicious stuffed poblano and the star of the evening, an outstanding mussels in curry. I requested extra bread and a straw to scarf down the remaining broth.! The curry really came alive as we sipped a nice Spanish sparkler. Duck two ways was excellent, confit leg and seared breast.. the confit was flavorful and succulent, the breast could have had more crispy, but was a perfect med-rare. The accompanying polenta had a great sear and a decadent creamy center. The Concord grape reduction was a nice foil to the duck's richness. Unfortunately, the mushroom ramen was utterly insipid. I honestly could not detect any flavor in the broth, virtually plain water, our server brought some soy and sambal Olek but even a few healthy doses of those could do little to liven up the dish. In contrast to everything else we tried, I don't think it should be on the menu Looking forward our next visit. read more

What a wonderful gem in Saranac Lake. Good selection of wines by the glass. The salad was simple but so well flavored and fresh. Tried the poblano mole. Very similar to what we know as a relleno. Just the right amount of heat. Don't miss the cheeses plate. Quite a selection of cheeses makes it hard to decide. The pickled veggies and chutney are a welcome added touch. The skirt steak entree with veggies and potatoes was soft as butter and perfectly seasoned. We ended the meal with a wonderful berry tart with peach ice cream. The service was excellent as well. This restaurant is *exceptionally* good -- and I don't use that phrase lightly. They offer exceptionally good food, and offer exceptionally good service!!! We went for a recent anniversary dinner while vacationing in the Adirondacks, and I am SO glad we chose to eat here. They brought us a complimentary glass of Prosecco to help us celebrate, the owner and service staff wished us happy anniversary, and our dessert came out with a candle -- but all of this was done with understated grace, so that it all made us feel really special. The food is imaginative, creative and DELICIOUS! We shared the mussel appetizer, then had halibut over citrus faro & a goat cheesecake over veggie ragu for entrees, and had a strawberry ginger-shortcake for dessert. We fought over last licks of sauces and over crumbs! This same meal would have cost 50-75% more in New York City or Montreal, so we were also pleasantly surprised with how "palatable" the final bill was! When in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid or Cranberry Lake, get a reservation here and treat yourself! read more

Last night we had an exceptionally good meal at Fiddlehead Bistro; our "go to" restaurant among our top three favorites in the Lake Placid/Saranac Lake area. The food at Fiddlehead is consistently good; last night It was memorable. Gnocchi made from butternut squash was literally the best we had ever tasted; and the mackerel was perfectly prepared. As I told Chef Craig, I have eaten at some of the finest seafood restaurants in Manhattan and have frequently been served overcooked fish. This has never been the case at Fiddlehead. read more

Set in the middle of the high peaks in Saranac NY, Fiddle Head is a a gem. We have a canp in Saranac Inn, and usually only venture as far as Donnelly's for ice cream but do occasionally like to clean up and eat out. How lucky to have found Fiddle Head! It's a lovely space with windows looking out on the water. The bartender is amazing creating cocktails that taste. Like the Adirondacks. The food was great and locally sourced. There were plenty of options so no matter what you're avoiding you'll find something to please. I'm a longtime Adirondacks gal-57 years and counting and it's great to see Placid get competition. Wait. Stop the presses.. a five-star dining experience and we didn't have to drive to Lake Placid from USL. Where to start- the bread, lightly grilled with a crunch on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. I know why they charge $2 for extra. Perfection. The green salad was simple but very fresh like the microgreens were just cut. I choose the stuffed patty-pan (veg) with Ras el Hanout seasoning. I coveted every bite. My husband and son had the porcini dusted sirloin, they thought it was very good, not excellent, but they are both big beef guys from Kansas City. We tried to go back but were closed on a Wed. :( Next trip I will make it a point for multiple visits. LOVE this place, service was excellent and can't get any cuter. Also next time I'll get there early just to have a drink at the bar. PS would have had dessert, but we headed to Donnelly's! read more

Great menu - really unique drinks - hippie vibe. So so friendly and accommodating!! We just loved this place!! Food is mostly locally sourced - menu is creative with food for everyone's taste!! We loved the stuffed squash, kafta and cheese selection. And the drink menu was so hard to choose from (so many good interesting options). Even dessert was great! And the staff?? So nice!!!! The menu is original and outstanding. It's a place for "foodies" who want fresh ingredients and original dishes. I had the fish cake appetizer with an out of this world cilantro sauce. For dinner I had cod with cous cous and this fantastic lobster cream sauce. We split a few desserts which were all amazing. read more

Great options for vegetarian/vegans. I was only surprised that we paid $20 for two draft beers. Little pricey.

We were disappointed with the paella entrees, especially the black one. It was very black thanks to squid ink, but everything was undercooked and mushy. I could not finish it. The red paella was a tad better, but was nothing like a real paella. It was basically bland risotto with bland chicken and some chorizo. Not a hit. On the other hand the mushroom ravioli and green salad were good. The Pinot noir and pineapple-jalapeño cocktail were very good. Maybe it was on off night, but to pay $20-25 for an entre that was basically inedible is beyond disappointing. read more

This restaurant was opened by a local woman who moved back to Saranac Lake with her partner a few years ago. He had been a chef owner of a Brooklyn Restaurant. They have managed to capture some of the Brooklyn vibe in a lovely Saranac setting. The artwork is by local friends and the interior is inviting, but we enjoyed our dinner on the back deck overlooking the river. And the food was quite good. My husband ordered a delicious take on meatloaf stuffed with blue cheese and spinach, while I went for a more holy tofu steak as an antedote to too many rich vacation meals. read more

While visiting Saranac Lake, we ate at the Fiddlehead bistro. I highly recommend this restaurant - it's quaint atmosphere is perfect for the town. The menu is eclectic and unique with a high end gourmet flair not seen in the area before. The duck I had was better than any Manhattan restaurant I've ever been in. The ingredients are locally sourced and the menu changes accordingly. The drinks are also very good with specialty cocktails that are delicious. My older teen daughter has a very expanded palette but, my younger daughter does not and she said it was the best high end restaurant she had ever eaten in. She cleaned her plate. We have been coming to Saranac Lake and came upon Fiddlehead Bistro through a lucky accident--and I do mean lucky!! What a wonderful place for our night of fine dining!!! The restaurant is a lovely saffron-colored building by the river. The mussels were as wonderful as we'd heard as was the chocolate crème brulee! The Spinach Salad was lightly dressed with lardons and tiny cucumber slices that were just lightly pickled. The Chicken Madras was as spicy as we were warned with a lovely raita with a hint of mint to cool the spice and fluffy homemade naan--a great surprise on a small, thoughtful menu!!! Wonderful vegetarian offerings rather than just asides and attention to the gluten free patron. All this and the service was lovely as are the owners!! We can't wait to return!!! We hope it is always full each time we return...it deserves to be!!! It is a lovely place!!! read more

Four of us shared a wonderful dinner here on 12/4/17. A knowledgeable, engaging waitress, good drink options and an incredible cheese platter appetizer. We each ordered a different entrée from a varied menu, one cod, one vegetarian (squash), one chicken and one pork. All were delicious and beautifully presented. These were followed by a fantastic chocolate crème broulee. The owner and chef both stopped by to ask about our satisfaction. I had one of the best dining experiences I can remember at Fiddlehead Bistro in the Adirondacks. At the restaurant, my partner and I learned that we were dining during the brief season when ostrich ferns sprout on local landscapes. The chef battered and fried the fiddleheads and served them with ponzu sauce. We sat overlooking a swollen Saranac River. While I didn't like the amount of broth served underneath the rainbow trout special, it didn't matter because 1) we sopped it up with grilled bread, and 2) the rustic, no-frills authenticity of the dining experience established a fundamental admiration for the business. I appreciated its attractiveness, its sturdy silverware, its clay dishes, and its locally tye-dyed napkins. I appreciated its commitment to local landscapes and grit to persist through winters. I appreciated its relationship with local producers, not to mention its freshness. I recommend Fiddlehead Bistro to anyone who visits this special corner of the world. read more

We had a very good dinner on a quiet Thursday night at Fiddlehead Bistro. The bartender did a great job with our cocktails, a Saranac Old Fashioned and a Back 40 rye whiskey-based cocktail. The menu changes daily with half a dozen entrees including vegan options. Fried vegetable dumplings were very tasty for an appetizer. Crispy, not at all greasy and veggies still had some crunch. We had the Osso Bucco and the Big-Ass Pork chop. Everything was cooked perfectly and the flavors were very good. The portions were generous. The owners have done a beautiful job renovating the building and it is a nice, inviting dining room. A great new fine dining option in Saranac Lake worth the drive from Lake Placid or Tupper Lake.
