First time for everything....my colleagues were talking about this so I decided to try this out. Here was my experience on an early Friday evening. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking, there's also structured parking on top of the building over (look for the ramp) Seating: 1 table with about 4 chairs outside and a few inside. Feels: It's not the most popping place in Honolulu and as usual, be cautious. It's near a lot of mechanic shops and random eateries but across from the community college. The space is simple. You got some plants, a table, tv, and a room decorated with news articles and enlightening quotes. Apparently it can be family friendly but a general place to just chill out and meet someone new. A pretty good hidden gem. FOOD & DRINKS: Kava Bowl (Cup) ($5) I guess they raised the prices but no worries. I full cup of kava....basically a bitter taste but nothing horrible kinda like drinking plain tea or black coffee. The effect for my first come numbed my mouth a bit and the second kept me pretty mellow. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Now here's the thing, it could either be the good vibes from Daya or the kava but at the end of the day I enjoyed the story talking and lessons discussed. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 stars. First of all we were pretty sketched out finding this place. It was closing so we weren't able to sit but we were able to get a bottle of this Kava tea. We passed around this milk-tea looking thing and just took wiff of it like any other sus thing. "Okay smells like dirt. Aiite, lets drink this for later." Half hour later at a restaurant, two of us were feeling a subtle high and we didn't know where it was coming from. Two out of three were extremely happy for some reason. Food tasted great af. Usually on Friday nights he has a couple customers sitting around a table with him outside relaxing and drinking Kava. Kava is a root plant found in the islands of the Pacific. Kava can be found in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Hawaii to name a few. Kava has an earthy flavor. For me, I did not like the taste at first. The taste of Kava may or may not appeal to your taste buds. For those that don't like it at first, it may take some time to get used to. The owner enjoys talking about the positive effects of Kava and the health benefits. I came in one day to try a cup. The only thing I felt was a numb tongue. Apparently, you need to drink at least 2 or 3 cups to feel anything. The owner said that some people drink a gallon or so a day (is that tolerance?). I asked him if he knew what active ingredient was in it but he didn't know. I didn't feel like sitting around for a while drinking kava so I left to go do some errands. On the way home, I was passing the exit for Fiji Kava and decided to go back and pick up a 1 pound bag with a strainer to bring back home to the mainland. Upon making that purchase, he poured me a small cup of kava, I think as a thank you. That was cool.   I don't remember his name, but the Fiji Indian guy who runs this joint is very welcoming and "holistic." By that, I mean he likes to tell you about how kava will change your life and how it can cure lung cancer. I mean, who really knows (I don't think there are any published double-blinded experimental studies). If you're like me and just want to try it, this is probably the best place to be because it seems the most legit and you'll learn all about the herbal product effects from the owner. I haven't been to any other kava place to make any comparison.   So, if anyone wants to check out the herbal wonders of kava, I would recommend checking this dude's hole-in-the-wall joint out.   Parking and finding the entrance might be confusing at first but it's not impossible so just keep an eye open for the Fiji Kava banner visible from the street. read more

This place is amazing! Daya is very friendly and informative, when I called to ask about pricing he asked when my fiancé and I were coming and recommended we eat after instead of before so the kava works better. When we got there, he told us where to park and then made the kava right in front of us, explaining the whole process. He told us lots of stories and drank kava with us. Even though he wasn't cooking that day he gave us some samples of curries and sauces he makes and sells and they were amazing! He even let us have some homemade "fiji battah" for frying tempura. I can't say enough good things about Daya and his kava. He is truly a special person and is the only person making kava in Oahu and he does it the traditionally at that. If you're in town, whether you've had kava before or not, this is place is a must go kava bar! If I had to rate Fiji Kava strictly based on the owner's knowledge and supposed benefits of kava, and his friendly and outgoing demeanor, it's 5+ stars for sure. My brother and I stopped by here in mid-April after getting inked at the Ink Pit...walked in and we were greeted with a warm welcome from Daya (sp?), the owner. Off the bat, he made us feel welcomed and asked if we wanted to try kava. Of course, we couldn't turn it down and so he proceeded to show us how to make a gallon's worth. He pours us each a cup, we chug it down, then we have a seat to chat about how he came about the business. After about 10-15 minutes, he pours us each another cup and we chat for another 5-10 min. And by this time both of our tongues are numb and we're feeling irie and relaxed (but who knows if the effects are psychosomatic). We both decide to purchase a pound to bring back home to the mainland and when it comes time to ring us up, we're each charged for the 2 cups that we drank. We also find out that later, once we get back to the hotel, that you can buy kava on Amazon for cheaper. So, the one star deduction is solely due to not communicating to us that we'd be charged for the 2 cups and his kava seems to be pricey. Overall, our experience at Fiji Kava was great and I could listen and talk to Daya for days as he's such a great and laid back person who simply loves his kava. I'm not a kava expert, so I'm putting my full trust in that he sells and serve excellent quality kava. Highly recommended if you want to learn about the benefits of kava and try some for yourself. Yay!! I'm the first reviewer.... well, I better be since I added this business to yelp. So, I was craving kava (Yes, you read "craving") and my friends had told me about this place. All they told me was that it was cross from HCC and by "club something". I drove past there several times, but couldn't find it. But the other day, I finally seen the sign!! YES!! Okay, let me first say that I never use to like Kava before, but now I just drink it for the feeling rather than the flavor. The only other places on yelp that says that sells kava is "diamond head cove" and "kava roots". Daya, the owner is awesome. When my bf and I walked in we were only going to pick up a bag to bring home with us, but after talking to him for awhile we decided to stay and share a bowl. Because we only purchased one bowl to share and it was our first time there, he offered us another bowl of kava which was half powder (the one we purchased) and the other half fresh. (He actually grinds the kava at this business and packages it and distributes it to other stores.) I will tell you that there is a BIG difference in flavor and you can feel your tongue and mouth get numb almost immediately. We ended up staying there a lot longer than we intended to because Daya was so kind as to refilling our drinks (for free) and even letting us try some of his Fijian food that he had made. I will most definitely be coming back here. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings people come in to play music and to just enjoy kava. He also does a buffet of food for $10. read more

Kava is awesome as it is a natural product that really helps you relax. The man that owns the shop showed us how the process was done and it's really quite simple. We all bought a few bags of kava to have parties over at our houses afterwards. Kava is not for the faint of heart as it literally tastes like mud! After just one drink you can feel your tongue start to get numb and your body relaxes after about 10-15 minutes. This is not a drink where you sip it. You absolutely chug it! Daya, the owner, sits down and talks with you the first time you go there, and poured me almost half a gallon of kava to drink for free! I love it, it does not taste like dirt, more like dried root, which it is. I'm part-Hawaiian, so know of kava (awa to Hawaiians). I bought all three strengths of kava that Daya makes himself, grinding the dried root into powder. Waka, the strongest, is dubbed "moonshine" by western drinkers. The Fiji and Vanuatu kavas are less strong. I also bought a cheesecloth like strainer to make the kava. An enjoyable place to go and talk story with Daya. My friends go at night to the all-you-can-drink for $25. read more
