Did my research to find Kona coffee for my upcoming visit to Vancouver, so I walked from home and took shelter in Local Joe's to cool off and order some 100% Kona Mauna Kea Estate coffee and have it ground. Liv was so delightful and clearly the right person for the job so I knew I was in the right place. In the meantime I ordered an iced coffee (which was delicious!!!!) and sat down and watched folks come and go. This is clearly a popular local coffee and snack shop so I will keep this place in mind since it's locally owned and operated and their decaf is processed via osmosis, not chemicals. I honestly don't understand the hype surrounding this place, the reality is completely misleading. I called 15 minutes ahead to place an order. The employee took it and immediately hung up on me--no name taken, no "thank you," no "goodbye." When I arrived, the parking was a mess, so I had to be dropped off. Inside, the food display looked sad, and the cashier looked completely miserable and unpresentable. While waiting patiently on the side for 15 minutes, I watched the kitchen staff preparing food. Red flag: they literally microwave their eggs instead of cooking them fresh. After 30 minutes of total waiting time, I finally went up to check on my order, only to find out the cashier hadn't even handed my ticket to the kitchen yet. She sent it back right in front of me without a single word of apology--just a blank stare. I cancelled my order on the spot. Horrible service, zero management, and low-quality food prep. I was actually on my way to another coffee shop, but I saw Local Joe when I turned on Smith, so I turned on that side street, Marin, and there was a parking spot right there. Meant to be! I ordered the Royal Hawaiian. This was delicious! I also had a slice of banana bread. It was heated in the oven with a pat of butter on it. Sooooooo good! Said I'd come back for the pumpkin bread, and I did a few days later. Ordered the Royal Hawaiian again. Can't get enough of it and the pumpkin bread heated the same way. Lots of people getting coffee to go and food. It's in a great location! I was also looking for a new coffee supplier. I used to go to Downtown Coffee but the last batch I bought was not very good. Been wanting to try this place for awhile but don't think I'll be back. Our food came out before the drinks were even prepared. $14 for a bagel with lox. I got the Joe's Cold Brew and when I picked it up it was packed with ice. I was not aware it was an iced drink and asked if I could get it without ice. The workers look stunned and even looked at me strangely and asked me if I was sure. The promptly poured our the liquid into another cup and handed me back a half empty cup of watered down cold brew. A worker, possibly a manager came out to see how we were doing. I expressed my dismay and he attempted to justify the workers actions. "Clid brew is extra strong" and this why they put ice. If I wanted a weak coffee I would have ordered a house brew. read more

I'm reviewing again because my previous one deleted somehow. There are very few cafes that have their own latte art, and for that reason alone, you should visit. But obviously, you're going to continue to visit because their drinks are also creative and tasty! I haven't tried their food yet. They also have limited outdoor seating which can get pretty hot so I prefer to take mine to go. They're a situated next to a large paid parking lot, but if you plan to be quick and have someone waiting in the car, I recommend parking right outside and sending someone in for your drinks. read more

Local Joe is a coffee shop located on the edge of Chinatown on Smith and Marin. It's a pretty popular spot, and there's limited parking available on the street or in a paid lot. The cafe itself is kind of small so there are a few tables indoors and outdoors; I visited on a weekend morning and it was pretty packed, so wasn't able to find an open spot. I placed an online order for a turkey pesto sandwich and Thai latte with oat milk, and took a bit to be noticed by staff. I told them I was there to pick up my order placed 30 minutes ago, and then they started making my order (which took around 15-20 minutes). Then the owner (I believe) as he gave me my order mentioned they replaced the oat milk with macadamia milk, which I'm allergic to. I asked for it to be remade, which took a bit of time; it would have been nice if they asked me first before making the substitution, esp since I was waiting right there! When I did dig into my order, the Thai latte was too sweet imo and I felt that the coffee wasn't strong enough. The turkey pesto sandwich was ok! Overall was a little frustrated with the online ordering process and wasn't a fan of their drinks, but would be willing to go back to try their sandwiches! read more

We came here two days in a row because it was a short walk from where we were staying. The specialty coffees were very good! The staff was helpful and allowed us to substitute ingredients in the breakfast burrito. It was nice that it came with avocado and salsa on the side. The breakfast croissant was tasty too and the croissant was flaky. We came back the next day and ordered an avocado bagel with cream cheese and bacon. Those were pre made and sitting in a glass container which I thought was odd. When I got it, it was very hot and I wasn't expecting the avocado and cream cheese being very hot. There was not a lot of cream cheese and I did not like having the items hot. I couldn't finish it which was disappointing. The ambiance inside is very cute and chill. The service was ok. SERVICE: The workers here are lively and friendly! We were greeted with a smile and our coffee and food came out quick. A small line built up, but they were quick to serve everyone. FOOD: I noticed they had a lot of Vegan options! I'm not vegan, but my best friend is so I'll have to bring her here one day. I ordered their Turkey Bacon burrito. I really enjoyed their breakfast burrito. I was amazed at how delicious it was. The size of the burrito was pretty big too! My friend helped me finish it all. Bottom line... No aloha spirit. I've been here a few times due to convenience and today made things crystal clear... I won't be back. Each visit the vibe is always the same... what do you want? I don't get the hype; as someone that travels for work, I have high expectations for coffee. The Hawaiian mocha was good, but basic and generic. When you taste coffee, you want to taste each individual note, from the roast to its strength and floral nuances. That tells you how much thought and love has been put into each ingredient. The scone was completely wrong, soft and not flakey, more like a dessert. I threw it away. I'm Asian, I don't waste food, but when you cause someone to waste food, that tells you you're doing something wrong and should rethink your menu, and travel more. If you think this is good coffee, you haven't had a transformative experience yet. The coffee from the big island is floral and nutty, they only put a splash of milk. Even in a tight space inside, they dedicate a large area to a roaster where they do a number of selections for drink-in or bags to-go. The staff were immediately welcoming and friendly, telling me about their business and coffees. The beans come from all over the world, but of course they also have 100% Hawaii grown varieties as well. Prices vary from $15 to $28 a bag depending on rarity. I opted for Regular Joe House Blend to start and finally had a chance to try it. It had complex flavors, roasty, a little light, with hints of chocolate. Lately I've taken to icing my coffee black, which is a refreshing wake up treat. The cafe also has a menu of baked goods and foods, perfect for a morning or brunch stop. If you're a local or visitor and exploring Chinatown area by foot, this is a great place to stop to support a local business specializing in coffee. After all, Hawaii is the only state that grows it, so it's easy to fall in love with it here. I stopped by Local Joe with a friend after hiking for breakfast and coffee. I had my dog with me and they let me bring her to the counter so I could order and look at the menu. I decided to get their 20oz iced (seasonal menu) French toast latte with almond milk. The coffee was very strong and really good. It wasn't too sweet at all, which I loved. For food, they had a lot to choose from and I didn't know what to get so I decided on the lox bagel. The bagel was well cooked and it was perfectly seasoned with everything. Small shop with expedient and friendly service. They are making a variety of offerings being made in a small kitchen and are likely bringing in some of their baked breakfast items. I haven't tried any of the food but have been tempted each of the four times I've been here. They did whip up a nice fruit cup for my 3 year old last time I had taken her to China town and was unprepared and didn't have a snack for her. My grandfather and I LOVE local Joe. The baristas are friendly and the outdoor space is shaded, with a great view of Aloha tower. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by the yummy aroma of coffee beans, as they roast, grind, and bag their products right inside. I usually opt for a chai latte or strawberry matcha, but the staff are great at making recommendations for craft drinks as well as fresh baked pastries, sandwiches, and breakfast items.
