Simply the BEST film programming, the Film Forum is one of the BEST reasons to live downtown; delicious concession stand offering the BEST unsalted popcorn in the Universe! Excellent independent film theatre - good selection of movies and clean! Excellent, excellent banana bread - moist and flavorful! Go really well with either coffee or tea. High recommended. We bought a loaf back to California as souvenir!

I used to go to the Film Forum all the time in college but I hadn't been in ages until I visited a week or so ago when I was in NYC over Labor Day weekend for a spontaneous solo weekend. It's a nonprofit cinema that's been around since 1970. But what makes it really special is its programming. It screens some really special retrospectives, classic films, and interesting new independent films. I visited during their Spielberg Festival and saw a Spielberg I'd never seen before (Close Encounters of the Third Kind). The film was great, but the Film Forum makes movies special. It's old school (don't expect recliners and in-theater food service here) but has a great concessions bar (love a concessions bar with real espresso machine so I can get some caffeine before a movie if I need a pick me up). And you can know that Film Forum cares about movies - about exposing people to movies they haven't seen or might have a hard time accessing, about getting people to love film. Just a great and classic NYC movie theater. Definitely check them out and support a great independent cinema if you love movies or want to learn more about them or just want to experience a NYC classic.

New York's classic art house cinema. Good prices, professional screenings and good refreshments. The programming of the films is top notch. If you love film this is the place for you.

Film Forum shows the best films/movie/cinema. People with NYC ID's can get a year long free membership which allows for discounted tickets. The staff is sweet. I always leave this place with fond memories. Totally reasonably priced. The new seating is so clean and comfortable! The ushers are kind. I've always had an easy time getting tickets the day of. Film Forum is reliable for screening all my favorite films. The best place to see classic cinema. Concession stand is limited but that's not why any of us are here. A great place to support if you love film, the arts and/or what makes New York "New York."

Easy film experience at the Film Forum. Bought ticket online, just before the showing of Amazing Grace sold out. They're very organized, and had relatively large crowds of excited moviegoers to wrangle. The wait is not for the faint of heart. At least the weather was cooperating! I dont think I'd brave the rain or snow to wait 30-45 minutes outside. Nice comfy seats. Still a big fan and enjoy movie showings here.

I absolutely am a cinephile, film buff or whatever you want to call it; I love movies. When i heard about this place I just knew I had to pay a visit. Luckily for me, my stay in NYC coincided with the Film Forum's "The Complete Hitchcock" month. Not only was I able to watch one of Hitchcock's great works on the big screen, but it was Psycho no less. For its size, the Film Forum hold a decent amount of people per screening room, id say 100 or so. The screen is not your theater screen, but still fairly large. Regardless, I love the cinematic experience one gets from watching a film in a room with a bunch of strangers, it add an extra layer to the film. I am glad that this theater exists and classics are still being shown to the masses. Tickets are $14.50 per ticket, but well worth it to see a classic. My showing of Psycho started at 5:30, and when I got there at 5:10 there already was a large line waiting. My suggestion would be to buy your ticket online and to show up early to the box office to pick up your ticket and get into line.

I usually go to Alamo Drafthouse, but…read morewe decided to try something new--and unfortunately, it was a pretty disappointing experience. The staff came across as nonchalant and not very engaged, which set the tone right away. The food didn't help either--the spicy tuna was completely flavorless, not crispy and the drinks were underwhelming. We also weren't told ahead of time that you have to pick up your food and drinks yourself, which was surprising since we're used to full service at your seat. On the positive side, the popcorn and truffle fries were decent, but everything else fell short. The seats were just okay--not particularly comfortable. The bathroom situation was also frustrating--it's located upstairs near the restaurant and wasn't well maintained. There were no paper towels, and overall cleanliness was lacking. Overall, this felt like a subpar experience, and I won't be returning. My cousin mentioned the New Jersey location is much better, so maybe it's just this one--but based on this visit, I wouldn't recommend it.

The setup was exciting - having my own private booth made me feel like i was experiencing something luxurious. Then, the menu arrived. Our waitress hit us with the news that most of the menu was unavailable because they had run out of... well, almost everything. It's hard to stay excited about a premium experience when you're basically forced into a "leftovers" draft pick of things you wouldn't normally order. Guava Fresca: Actually pretty good! It's zero-proof and gave off a solid spritzer vibe. If only the food kept that same energy. The "Shareables": We went with the buffalo wings and the coconut shrimp. The shrimp were surprisingly large, but they showed up without any sauce. Both were fine, I guess? Very generic food court vibes and unmemorable unmemorable. Fish & Chips: The chips (fries) were the best part of the meal, which is saying something. The fish had a weird sweetness to it, and the cocktail sauce was aggressively heavy on the cilantro. I'm usually a fan of cilantro, but here it just felt like it was lost and out of place. Also the fish was covered in bread crumbs and not a traditional batter. Lobster Roll: This was the biggest heartbreaker. It was generic, bland, and lacked any real flavor. If you're going to charge theater-premium prices for lobster, it should probably taste like something. It's disheartening to pay for a "luxury" experience only to be told you can't have 70% of what's on the menu. I would've had a much better time if I could've actually eaten what I came for. Sadly, I don't think I'll be back unfortunately

Each guest had themed movie props/goodies laid out at their table, which was a nice surprise. The hosts were fully dressed in The Mummy Returns outfits from head to toe. One of the them came in front of the screen before the movie started and introduced the movie with a bunch of fun facts and an entertaining bit. Super glad we went. It was really fun. I didn't order food or drinks this time. However, I've had drinks and the loaded fries at Alamo before, and they were fantastic. The loaded fries are honestly better than a lot of restaurant quality ones.

It is counterintuitive to what made this cinema special in the first place. If you ever have the misfortune of being kicked out of your order like it happened to my partner, you'll have to spend minutes trying to find the right time to scan the QR code to get back in. This means waiting for the cinema screen to provide enough light to assist your phone in reading the code. In other words, extra time away from the movie experience itself. Also because of this ridiculous glitch, my partner's Victory reward was rendered invalid after it had already been accepted when she first logged in. This is just embarrassing at this point. It's bad enough you let an enormous amount of servers go after treating them so unfairly, now you're partaking in a sad attempt to replicate a service that is already available through many mainstream theater chains. If you're in New York City, you're better off just going to Nitehawk Cinema. The food is better and they actually take care of you when you're there.

(Click on my Substack for more Baumbach thoughts including my brief interaction with the auteur, as awkward as many of his finest scenes). You may have heard about the successful company that helped destroy movie theaters by pivoting to "content" meant to promote purchases of high-end TVs and nice couches. (Related, I went to Best Buy and didn't recognize anything. Is that a thermostat? A stereo? A smart garden hose?) This company was so successful, that after Knives Out was heralded as single-handedly reviving non-Marvel film, its sequel was withheld from the theaters it allegedly saved. (BTW, if you were planning to tell me to watch the amazing 53-part Quibi streaming series about The Golden Age Of Hollywood, don't bother). But after Netflix helped destroy theaters, it did a nice thing. It's one of those ironic moments like the purse-snatcher scene in Jay Kelly. It signed a lease that helped the Paris avoid the fate of the Ziegfeld and a million others, in a world where the AMC theaters that destroyed all the independents have been suffering themselves. So, while it was vile that Netflix thought Roma should be seen on TVs, it was nice of them to show it at the Paris, especially for the unusually vibrant sound. I saw Train Dreams Saturday. I suppose, like the kid in Squid and The Whale, I am a philistine. I wish I could praise its morose existentialism but I'm not quite on board. However, I did appreciate the majesty of the northwestern fires and falling trees in this venue. There was no assigned seating; not sure if this is just temporary, but if they keep that policy I might be obliged to overlook Netflix's evil and upgrade to 5 stars.

Without giving away the movie you do need to see thunderbolts (new avengers) before seeing this Spiderman. I was happy to see one of my favorite strange things characters in the movie. I didn't feel any mist in my seat because the boring couple next to me turned theirs off. I was so happy when the lady went to the bathroom I was able to enjoy the movie more. I recommend going to a higher level to watch the movie I was in D13 & D13. Next time I will sit further in the back because there were some scenes that I saw flashing lights in my side view. Either way it was wonderful for my first time. I don't recommend getting popcorn it will fly everywhere. Haha. While the ticket prices were high its worth it in my book. Your paying for an experience. The loud banging noises were super cool. I did notice the isle seats move a lot more than the inner seats. There's a few issues here and a few fantastic things and I think the easiest way is to list them by category. The Bad: -Like others, I agree that the seats unfortunately are not that comfortable here. This is by far the biggest issue here and it should have been addressed years ago and I doubt it will be soon -They still show the same extremely annoying metal band shirt advertisement with flashing lights that is annoying every single time I go here -The staff here aren't the nicest but it's a movie theater so I can deal with it The Good: -If you're looking for independent films and foreign films, this is one of if not the best theater to go to -The occasional Q&A I'm able to go to such as most recently for Eephus; which was an excellent existential baseball movie; and the Ukrainian documentary Porcelain War last year are always entertaining and interesting and they don't cost more so I would recommend them -If you're looking to see some form films to fill out your Letterboxd Oscar list or perhaps the shorts or something, they show virtually all of them here -They have some fun midnight screenings and other things such as the obligatory The Room and Rocky Horror Picture Show of course There's a few other theaters that I like going to more but there's occasionally films that you really can't find anywhere else. Combine that with the fact that this place is so convenient that I deal with any of the issues here. If they fix the seats, you can preemptively switch this to five stars but for now, it's a four.
