Kai spent well over 3 hours with me on a Sunday. I called him the week before to make an appt and he managed to get me in that Sunday! Immediately, I clicked with him because I liked his look, his degree of assertiveness and his conscientious creative flair! He advised me as to what would work best with my hair and I let him work his magic. I wanted a very blonde look for the summer and he created the most beautiful color! Salon 1803 is legit. Professional service, professional staff and professional products! Kai has cut my hair a couple times now and I refuse to see anyone else. The 45 minute drive from Cambridge to Marshfield is well worth it. He is absolutely amazing at what he does, and it has been evident in the results. As an asian male, my hair is fairly course and thick. It can be a pain in the butt to manage, and finding a unique stylist who is familiar with such hair has been difficult. But Kai is ~absolutely amazing~ at what he does and explained to me all the tricks to prepare and maintain my hair style. When I asked Kai about a particular style I was interested in, he was completely honest and explained to me that it would not work out with my hair type, and suggested something different. This honesty was greatly appreciated! He is also one of the NICEST people I know. Moved to a new area and it had been months since I had done a single thing to my hair. Following the positive reviews I made an appointment with Kai for a cut and color refresh. I showed up to the salon, it's a nice intimate space and the stylists all seemed personable and fun, going back and forth with regulars who were there. I talked with Kai who checked out my previous color and gave me his recommendation to go closer to my natural hue. I was a little hesitant but he gave me his word it wouldn't be too dark and that he'd work in some lighter pieces. Although the workmanship was good, the final color came out much darker than I was expecting. You know that - ugh - stomach drop when they spin you around and you just aren't happy with what they've done. Immediately I was honest with him and told him it wasn't really what I had wanted. Kai said no worries, if you don't like it just call back and we can make a time to throw in some highlights. So I did. I went home, slept on it, and called back a few days later. I left a voicemail. No reply. They say on their website that texting sometimes gets a faster response, so I do that. No reply. I get no call back so I wait a few days and call again. This time I finally catch Kai on the phone. He says he's booked up but gets me an appointment the following week. So two weeks after the first visit I go for the follow-up. When I show up I give them my name to check in and they don't have it in their system. There's some fumbling and awkwardness and "uhh umm ok, I guess we can take you". Sure maybe this is coincidence but it's also really shitty customer service. I wasn't happy with the first service, I had to hound you to make a follow up visit and then I show up and it's an unwelcoming awkward experience. Couple that with the fact that when I explained why I wasn't satisfied with the color and tried to discuss how to change it there was some attitude involved. Just felt uncomfortable all around. The follow-up visit was alright - Lashawna helped me and she was lovely which helped assuage the otherwise catty vibe. I left happier than the first time around but definitely not enough to cancel out the other awkwardness. read more

I haven't seen many reviews of Salon 1803 from the perspective of a curly client, so here's mine! I saw Kai today for a cut and color for my very overgrown, very curly pixie. As with most curly folks, I was nervous to go to a new stylist, but Kai listened to what I wanted and clearly knows what he's doing with hair of all types. I told him I like big, retro curls and he totally respected that when cutting and styling. He started out by cutting some of my hair dry, which allowed him to work with the natural shape of my curls. It's a technique I know a lot of the curl experts of the world recommend, so that was reassuring! When we got to the coloring portion of the appointment, Kai took my vague notions from our quick consult when I walked in ("I want a sort of natural redhead look") and delivered a gorgeous dark coppery color that I totally love. All in all, I got an awesome cut and color that really aligned with my wishes walking into the salon. Couldn't be happier! I also think it's worth mentioning that while I was there, Jessi and LaShawna were pulling off some truly amazing hair feats, including bringing one client's totally damaged hair back to life and lightening another client's long blonde hair to a gorgeous almost white-blonde color. Arrived to my 7pm appointment tonight, pulled in and saw the lights were off. Walked up to the door and it was locked, knocked a few times, called (no answer) and then went back to my car. Sat there for 10 mins, thinking maybe they stepped out for dinner and were running late (was trying to give them the chance to redeem themselves). Texted them, called a few more times. No answer, straight to voicemail. Got back out of my car, knocked on the door, no answer. Messaged the owner on Instagram, no answer. Drove away angry and shocked that a business does not have the respect to call a client to cancel. Not only could they have called, or texted but they also had my email. ZERO excuse as to why you should have a client show up for a BOOKED appointment with the door locked, lights out. Thought the price, $150 for keratin was too good to be true--guess it was. Jenny did an awesome job she gets 5 stars, but unfortunately this review is for Salon 1803, it's a shame she will lose my business because I can't go back to this place. I am used to salons that are cutely decorated, clean and inviting. This place is laughably tiny, dirty, and awkward. They have only 3 chairs, and one uncomfortable washing station. They actually had me sit in a chair by the door with foils and cut a mans hair while mine was processing. The experience was anything but relaxing and pampering. The rest of the staff screaming at each other, in front of all of the customers. It was so awkward. I left with a headache from the blasting music and the high school drama. read more

Absolutely love what this salon did with my hair! LaShawna and Kai cut and colored it and I've gotten tons of compliments on it. The salon itself is comfortable, clean, and has a fun vibe. While I was there, Kai was working on a photo shoot with a model -- I've never had a stylist who does such high fashion work but is still so down to earth! He gave me a great cut and advice on how to care for my hair to make sure it stays healthy. LaShawna washed my hair and gave me a cherry cola balayage on top my dark hair. It is beautiful! On top of the expert work they do, I was really impressed with the staff's knowledge of hair products and techniques. I was with the same hairstylist for 20 years and I loved her, but she wasn't very knowledgeable about the latest trends in the industry. Salon 1803 is very versatile in that it can give you exactly what you ask for OR help you try something out that's more trendy. While I got my hair done, I noticed Jessi doing a model's makeup. Finally found a modern salon in the Boston area! Moved here from San Francisco and couldn't find a salon worth going back to again, until I met Kai at Salon1803. He did a great job with my color, cut and style. And he has a great attention to detail. I also appreciate the modern conveniences of email or text reminders, online appointment scheduling, and he uses an iPad to swipe my credit card for payment --- I've missed having a salon owner who understands how to make it easy for busy professionals. I was lucky to have the day off so I scheduled in the middle of the afternoon, so easy. The lady in the chair next to me was getting dolled up for a big night out, and Kai arranged professional make up for her, in addition to the high glamor style he was doing for her hair (while I was under the heater for my color processing). I went to Kai last Tuesday to get my hair cut. I get a Bob so I'm very wary & cautious about it. Past experiences with stylists who, even in high end salons, that charge $75 for a wash, cut & style weed whacked my head leaving me scarred for life. I researched and asked for recommendations. EVEN made appointments that I actually sat in the chair and ran out last minute because in my gut I knew they didn't know what they were doing. I found him on Style Seat. He had 43 reviews & EVERY REVIEW all 43 were great comments. He did a great job w my hair. He knew what he was talking about. He was so kind and made me feel so comfortable. I was So insecure in the chair, he did not have a judgmental attitude at ALL he was so very wonderful. He did such an amazing job. I even got many compliments from guests at my work who hadn't even known I had just got it done that day. I sent him a text @ 12pm asking if he had any openings before 2:30 cuz I had work, @ 12:18 he responded & even was so very kind to squeeze me in to his dbl booked schedule. During school vacation week no less. He knows what he is doing & doesn't take advantage or have an ego even tho he is truly the greatest stylist I have come across in the last 15 yrs. I had even bought product from his salon & was not charged a ridiculous amount. He is tech savvy and very personable. I have found my second stylist relationship. I had my first cut and color with LaShawna. I texted Kai to set up an appointment and he got right back to me. The computer system sent two confirmations too. I was 10 minutes late - eek - because I could not find the salon but I should have looked at the website before. It clearly states it is right behind the Levitate Surf Shop. Look in between Tumblefun Gymnastics and the surf shop. The salon is right there. So, now you know too. The salon is relatively small, but clean, well lit and has everything you need. The hairstylists were constantly sweeping, cleaning, etc. The salon itself is VERY busy. I was there for about 3-4 hours and people were in and out for haircuts, Kai, Jessie and LaShawna were busy all afternoon. They had kids, men and women in there. Kai, in particular, is awesome with kids. He engages with them, treats them like they are in charge of their hair, talks to them easily and makes them feel and look awesome. Now, I happen to want advice when I go to a hair salon. You go to a doctor for medical advice, right? So, I want an expert to tell me what will look good and to offer suggestions and/or tell me if what I want is not the best idea for my hair, face etc. They are the experts. Kai is a hilarious straight shooter. My favorite comments "This is not Supercuts, I do not do trims," and "You are not allowed to style your own hair, come back tomorrow morning." The last was in response to a guy who was getting his hair cut for his engagement photos the next day, and Kai made time to have his hair styled the next morning prior to the photos :) He also told the same guy - Absolutely not doing it - when asked to cut his hair a certain way. Lol! Bottom line - the guy's hair came out great and he was asking Kai to something I personally think looks dumb too, so I agree with Kai! LaShawna and Kai collaborated over what processes, colors to use on my hair, which I appreciate. The end result came out great. The cut is also on point and exactly what I asked for. I did bring some pictures on my phone and she picked the one and color she thought would look the best. The stylists are funny, irreverent and off-beat, 3 of my favorite things. If you are looking for a quiet, spa-feel with the sound of water running softly in the background and stylists who speak in whispers - do not go here. If you want to get your hair done with people who know what they are doing, and laugh repeatedly while jamming out to Boy George - go here! read more

100% would recommend. I've been going to this place for about 2 years and I'm always satisfied with my haircut. I was the first person in my family to find this south shore gem of a salon, and now my whole family goes here. The salon itself is smaller than you might expect, but the service and results are second to none. I went to salon 1803 4 times. My first apt was w Kai (owner) I was with same hairdresser that retired after 30 years previously- the Redkin products they use are good quality but my hair came out very dark the first color, the cut was great by Kai - he is truly an artist! They were able to put a few highlights in my hair to help w darkness but owner was very offended that I didn't like the darkness and that I asked it to be lighter - well - next time I went in I was given a diffent stylist without being consulted on that stylist change , got a good color this time no cut needed. next time I got same as second person but I had to wait 45 min for appt and color faded and gray showed after 2 weeks they told me no cut needed - I decided to try again- I got the same person as before ( not owner) had to wait 35 min for appt this time, color seemed lighter and cut was ok but front was un even one side was longer. I thought owner would cut it again- I asked for him next appt, but he has no openings suddenly - while I was there , stylists had words with each other -tense atmosphere - could be a good shop but inconsistent quality - it's a shame because Kai has talent read more

I have been following Kai for a while now, he's that good, but I went last week and Nia did a new heat treatment on my hair that is fabulous. The top of my hair has always been a little courser than the underneath layers, but this treatment made my whole head so soft and shiny. I thought it might just wash out, but it's still wonderful. For the first time in years I decided to try a new stylist. I heard of Kai since I live in the Marshfield area and decided to try him out. The first time I went to him I called last minute and he fit me right in. I only got a cut but even that for me is stressful because I never cut my hair and I have always seen the same person so someone new was scary for me. But Kai proved to me I didn't have to worry with him. He didn't cut off more than I wanted and styled it so well that my hair felt thicker and had more volumeus. I also just clicked with him so well because of how personable he is. My second expierence was even better. I decided to color my hair having no idea what I wanted. Kai looked at his color wall picked out what he felt would do best on me and he was right! He gave me a beautiful summer look that looks so natural I couldn't believe it. I recomennd Salon 1803 to everyone I promise you won't regret it, as soon as you walk in you know by the feel of the salon and how Kai treats you that you made the right choice. Sorry to disagree with everyone, but I found Kai to be very full of himself and not terribly interested in me. I wanted a "new" look. I got one. It's much shorter than what I wanted, and it seemed to be very amateurish. Just cut straight around. He should have told me when I said he should take another inch off the back that it would make my hair just about chin length. It was difficult to tell with my hair being wet. I had told him that I wanted it to fall just on my shoulders with an angle so it curled in toward my neck in front. Hard to describe in words, but I showed him. After he finished the blowout, I tried to explain what I had wanted, and he said he didn't know what I meant, but it would mean longer hair. Really?? Color was great, but if you do go, bring a picture, and be sure that he spends time talking to you and not about himself. read more

Doesn't take very long to see that this Salon is special! Shop is small, cute and clean. Staff very friendly. Owner Kai is fantastic from cut to color. Able to assess, provide opinion and work with you. His main concern is to provide an expert cut and color with complete customer satisfaction. Kai is a true hair artist and one is wise to trust him completely. I haven't had direct experience with the other stylists in the shop but seeing that Kai is such a perfectionist I can only assume they are on top of their craft as well! read more

After reading about Salon 1803 on yelp, I decided to give it a try - I was not disappointed! Kai is awesome. He's so nice and funny - and very good at what he does! He really took the time to understand what I wanted, and what my hair routine is like on a daily basis. Even more, when it came to the styling, he explained everything he did and gave suggestions on what types of products I could use to keep my look. Everyone here was awesome. I called right around 1pm and they closed at 4 but Jenny was able to fit me in right then! I'm from out of state and was really just ready to make a change with my hair, I had some ideas and Jenny saw the picture I had of what I wanted and made it work so well with the color I already had and my natural color. I knew I wanted to have balyage done because of the natural looking effect, and it seriously looks so natural. I've also never had short hair but decided to chop it off, Jenny took my general idea and once again perfected it for me. I loved my experience here. The staff is hilarious and they joke around with each other which is awesome, their chemistry is unreal and they are so accommodating - plenty of refreshments too if you have a long appointment and get thirsty. It was a HUGE change for me but both Jenny and Kai assured me that it looked amazing and a day later I'm obsessed with it. I've already gotten so many compliments and my hair makes me feel so adult-y. I love it. Thank you so so so much for everything.
