I was very excited to try this new place but it was definitely not as good as I was expecting. The place is too bright and too loud. We ordered 6 tapas and 1 dessert. 4 tapas were good, 2 were disappointing and the dessert was okay. The menu lacks several classic tapa options such as gambas al ajillo, Spanish tortilla, a nice jam option.... The service was fast... too fast! They would pick up the plates from the table and take them away while there was still food on them... Overall - not worth the hype. Good options of wine bottles on the menu, though. read more

I really wanted to love this place as there are so many amazing reviews but I doubt I would return. We ordered a few plates to share. The first to come out was the Warm Brie. My friends and I literally stared in shock at how small a piece of Brie it was. If I was a server I would have been embarrassed to bring it out. It was served on what appeared to be a tea cup saucer or at least the size of one. Honestly this coming out first dashed our expectations for rest of meal. Other dishes we ordered: Sun chokes - I liked the Gochujang sauce but others did not, Patatas Bravas - standard and everyone enjoyed, Chicken thigh - another small portion and nothing exciting. The one highlight was the Smoked Trout - we actually ordered a second one as we all enjoyed it and were still hungry. It's almost like a Trout Benedict- so very yummy. We spoke to the table next to us and I think they had more success with what they ordered. Specifically they raved about the bone marrow and fried chicken with caviar. So if you go, order those and the trout. Wine: Syrah was delicious Ambiance: it is super loud in this restaurant - we had to speak loudly to each other like we were at a bar. I think it might because it is an open space and mostly concrete and windows, plus the music was turned up loud as well. Service: very nice wait staff. Overall, if I lived closer I might give it another chance. I'm sure people in the neighborhood enjoy this spot. read more

Pretentious. Overpriced. Pandering. The food looks pretty, but that's about it. It's small, overpriced, uninspired. It's obviously marketed as Spanish-inspired, but there's very little influence here beyond calling the food "tapas." It's more of an excuse to make the dishes small. We had the pork balls, xl duck croquette, octopus, and mushrooms; I can only recommend the mushrooms. The octopus is small, not well charred, rubbery. The pork balls were more bonito flakes than pork. The croquette was not flavorful and the mustard sauce was gross. The mushrooms were at least flavorful and a decent portion. The service was bad. It's pandering. Sad. We were seated before the table next to us by the same server and served second. My Spanish girlfriend had to listen to a 20-something explain tapas. I had to hear a wine spiel like the wine selection was something special (it's not). We sat waiting on drinks for too long. We had dishes delivered without room on the table. It was disappointing. Ambiance is as expected. There's a small bar, tables stacked with 'hip' North Park 'socialites,' and tables with couple groaning about the bill. It's also so dark I could barely read the menu. This place is obviously looking to cash in on the booming North Park crowds without offering anything close to special. These are mediocre meals at premium prices. You want Spanish food? Try Mabel's Gone Fishing instead. You want Asian food? How 'bout Saiko or Riki. Wine? Try anywhere else - or buy a better bottle of Rioja at Costco! We were lucky to be able to walk in one evening and have Cassidy as our server. She gave excellent descriptions of the food and wines we had questions about without making us feel like she was making a specific recommendation. We had never had vermouth before (outside of a martini) and decided to try it and we were so glad we did! What a delicious and interesting drink! I also enjoyed a red wine from the Canary Islands; it tasted exactly as Cassidy described, and we actually purchased a bottle to take home! We split the yellowtail crudo, the shrimp and corn fritters, and the lamb chorizo balls. All were tasty and presented with the perfect sauce. Starting with the highs, the Hanger Steak and the Sunchokes (I think replaced by the Mushroom in the mushroom St. Jacques dish) were the stars of the show. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender. But not everything on the menu was as stellar. The patatas bravas flavors were spot on, but the dish was let down by the large amount of salsa, which made the potatoes soggy. I wish they were extra crispy. The octopus was another mixed bag. Nicely charred and crispy, it was served with a tomato sauce that sadly overwhelmed the octopus' delicate flavors. The dish lacked balance, leaving the octopus lost in a sea of tomato. And then there was the pork shoulder: good chew but a bit fatty. It had a nice smokey flavor. The textural issues, however, made it less enjoyable due to the cut of pork. A longer cooking time at a lower temp would have rendered the fat even further and kept the meat juicy. The shrimp skewers were a disappointment, arriving still semi-raw. The seasoning was nice though. And the spicy shrimp corn fritters were chewy, room temp, and not crispy at all. My least favorite. The wine selection was great, offering a variety of options that complemented the meal. Plus, the ambience was nice. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the wine and menu. Overall, while Finca has potential, the execution on many dishes leaves much to be desired. read more

My girlfriend and I came here on Friday night to try a new place. The ambience and vibe looked cool and the place was semi-full at 7pm. We ordered the Companion Bread Sourdough, Chicken Liver Mousse, Catch of the Day Crudo, Italian Dumplings, Grilled Shrimp Skewer, Charred Octopus, and Grilled Hangar Steak. We were convinced to order the Sourdough to accompany the Chicken Liver Mousse and were told we'd need the bread to sop up the mousse. First, the Sourdough came out toasted BLACK on one side (the side that was flipped down). Is this supposed to be 'fancy and unique' or a F*CK up?! My friend and I looked at each other and were wondering if these were meant for the garbage but someone thought 'oh they won't notice.' It came with sprouts and onion butter sprinkled with a carpet of chives, which really lacked any taste on the bread. You'd think it would be hard to hide the taste of an onion....boy they did a great job of it though. :) The mousse...well...let's say I don't think I like liver and never will. I gave it a shot though. The dish was blanketed in chopped up sweet potato, apples, nuts and maybe a gourd veg of some sort to represent the fall season. This 'fall medley' showed up again with the shrimp. The octopus was nothing to write home about but the shrimp...it kind of looked raw still (gray and transparent looking) and once I took a bite I knew my vision did not fail me. I don't think these shrimps came near a grill....they were undercooked. Anyway the hangar steak, dumplings and crudo were probably the only things that we managed to eat and say that they were OK. Overall, ALL the items were lacking acid or any real seasoning/salt for us to say 'Wow that was amazing.' Nothing came out on top which was very disappointing because these tapas were not cheap. I wish I had taken pictures to go with this review which would make this a more interesting and amusing piece to read. :0) Unfortunately, I would go to Costa Brava over coming back to Finca again. Service and ambience were great here, but when I go to a restaurant those attributes are second to food tasting and looking amaze-balls. read more

Our group of 8 all agreed that our dinner, service and ambiance was wonderful and would highly recommend. The first round of cocktails were very tasty, we got the Paper Crane, a Paper Plane and one Vermouth. We pretty much tried every single thing on the menu and our highlights were the Local Tomato, Vegetable Ceviche, Eggplant Dip and Beef Tartare to start with. Our next round of superstars included Patatas, Shrimp and Pork Belly (not everyone liked how fatty this was, but it was my favorite!). For the final round we had the Steak Frites and Lamb and if we had to pick one of those final dishes the Steak Frites would be the winner. Desserts and after dinner drinks were the cherry on top. With the food being a big hit I do believe a big part of our experience was due to the excellent service from the team. We adored our server Melanie who made great recommendations and portioned out of our food in a great way that gave us a tiny bit of room to breath in between courses. I do apologize that I do not remember his name but the bar manager also helped us out with our extensive search for the perfect port and sherry at the end of the night. The restaurant's atmosphere was pleasant, but the service was poor. Dining alone, I ordered four tapas, including the fried chicken, which was shockingly overpriced. I anticipated an impressive dish for the high cost, but it turned out to be the worst fried chicken I've ever had. For the same price, I could have had a McDonald's chicken meal with a better sauce. Even the table behind me remarked on the outrageous prices and vowed never to return. Given the exorbitant prices and low food quality, I doubt this place will stay in business for long. If you are looking for tapas that are evenly remotely Spanish, this is not the place. The food was good, but I was disappointed thinking that there would be at least one Spanish tapa on the menu. Every dish we tried at Finca was delicious! Going with a group of five was perfect for sharing and trying a variety of plates. We've been back several times because their seasonal menus always bring something new try and it's always amazing. The bone marrow, beef tartare, and lamb chorizo are standouts, and the shrimp skewers and corn fritters are always a hit. The Italian dumplings are delicious as well, and the secret menu late-night (served 30 mins before closing) ibérico burger is a must-try. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with a good vibe created by both the staff and fellow diners. Everyone at Finca is there to have a good time and have some great food! Service is friendly and efficient, and dishes come out quickly. Finca continues to be a favorite spot for delectable food and a great time in San Diego. read more

Have been to Finca about 6 times since opening night. Love it so much have joined their wine club! This is a welcome addition to North Park. Love the tapas and wine focus. Love the wine bar and bottle shop. Do not come looking here for what you may think are "typical" Spanish tapas (ie spanish tortilla, gambas al ajillo) but instead a more fresh and innovative view of tapas with a So Cal spin. Very creative! Over our visits I have tried several of the tapas menu - which seems like it is evolving/adding new options. thankfully some of our "favorites" have continued to be offered. Love the charred octopus with the olives, potatoes and tomato sauce (ask for some bread to sop up the extra sauce!). The mushrooms St. Jacques is decadent and delicious! I love the XL duck croquette which is stuffed with shredded tasty duck meat (though I find the sauce a bit salty). The smoked trout tapas was delicious. The roasted cauliflower was very good and unique. Husband loved the hanger steak and the tomato and mozzarella salad which was a fairly new addition was good and will be nice on a warm summer day. The new grilled artichoke appetizer, with the root veggie was good - a bit spicier than I thought it might be. the patatas bravo was very yummy and a large portion - that we brought it home and had it with eggs the next morning. So far everything we have tried has been delicious. Looking forward to trying the fried quail next! Now the wine - well it has been very good so far. I like that you can have a half glass option. I also think the bottle prices are reasonable so what they offer. I like that they have had some changing wine makers come in and offer their wines. It is nice to see some areas of California highlighted that you may not always find at restaurants in San Diego. There are nice options for both white, rose, orange and reds. I have tended to enjoy the red varietals more. Service - outstanding! From the hostess, owners, bartender (shout out to Damon) and servers (Sarah excellent) to Jesse - all fabulous, welcoming and knowledgeable on the food and wine. Very makes the experience enjoyable. Atmosphere - clean, modern, but with warm touches. Pillows on the seating areas that are nice touches. The bar seating (wish the bar was bigger) is nice - though maybe a bit crowded at times). The place always seems busy when we go, so I would highly recommend reservations. There are a few outside tables which will be very nice for summer. My husband and I went tonight and had a wonderful meal and experience. Sarah was our server... She was excellent. Very attentive and knowledgeable. Also with the electronic system, they would put the orders in and as soon as they are ready, someone would bring them out. The ambience was very Barcelona. Big city, sleek and contemporary. We had some fabulous dishes. For starters, we ordered the bread, service, grilled octopus, and the fresh tomatoes. The bread, service and fresh tomatoes were both very good. The tomatoes had melted onion and anchovies. The bread was sourdough with an herb butter and pickled onions. The octopus was on a delicious deep, red tomato sauce. It had some potatoes and olives. The grilled octopus though was chewy and had a very fishy taste. I would give this one dish an average rating. The sauce was really good with the bread. But then we had the grilled skirt steak with confit potatoes, and the confit duck croquette. these two dishes were spectacular. Excellent. Lots of great Spanish wines by the glass and the sangria was excellent. We will be back. There were a number of other tapas that we wished we were able to try... I was disappointed to not love this place, as I love Spain and anything tapas. The ambience and service were nice. The food looked good but just wasn't. What we got: Patatas bravas - boiled potatoes in a sauce, no crisp or texture, not traditional, and pretty disappointing. We didn't eat them and a manager came by and asked us what we thought of them. I said "not my favorite." He asked why and I mentioned the above. He said they weren't going for traditional, which is fine but maybe call it something else? I have traveled all over Spain for 5 weeks eating patatas bravas and these were just not it. The manager offered a replacement since they were not good, which leads me to my next item... Hamachi crudo - hamachi crudo is meant to be raw and sliced thin to let the quality of the fish really shine; simple and delicious. This dish was more so served in a ceviche style, slightly cooked in a citrus sauce. The fish was also in chunks, and the quality was not good - similar to the quality at a cheap poke shop. Charred eggplant dip - it was fine. It was basically baba ghanoush. It was served way too cold. Mushroom St. Jacques - super creamy and cheesy mushroom dish; delicious but should have been served with a crostini or something to eat it on. Char-grilled chicken thigh - delicious, tender, cooked to perfection. Overall, this place has a nice ambience, the service is good, and the dishes are well plated and look pretty. If I wasn't really paying attention, I would've thought that I liked it, but if you really thought about each dish, they weren't really very good. I am a sucker for Spanish food and was very excited about this place, but ultimately it just did not satisfy me. Mabel's Gone Fishing has absolutely phenomenal Spanish style food, if that is what you're looking for. read more

The ambience was to be expected for North park Restaurant. The service was great. The wine list was a little uninspired, I was disappointed to see that their only orange wine on the menu by glass was from California and not from Croatia or Spain. I do hope the restaurant creators take time to speak with their chef and re-examine their menu. The food was horrible. Nothing on this menu was remotely close to Spanish tapas. Everything was covered with a disgusting tomato sauce, or some type of mayonnaise. The flavors alone were bland and cacophonous. To top it off everything was wildly overpriced for the quality. Everybody loves tapas you don't need to reimagine something that doesn't need to be fixed. If you are looking for tapas in San Diego check out Wolf in the Woods in Mission Hills, or Costa Brava in Pacific Beach. If you're really feeling it get on a flight and check out Bar Cantina in Barcelona. read more

Geeeez. Is this my new favorite restaurant in San Diego? Probably. The food was INCREDIBLE and the selection of wines is a real home run. Sara was our server and really walked us through the menu with a level of detail and curation that most folks would gloss over. She also knew exactly what type of wines would pair best with our dishes- so fun to have such a bespoke dining experience. The real kicker is when Dan, one of the owners, came over and chatted with us for a few minutes. It felt like we were running into an old friend. Dan cares a lot about local dining experiences and you can tell with how Finca turned out. I cannot wait to go back. I just need to hurry because they warned that the menu is always changing! And they figured out how to bring that representation into their food! We had the Potatas Bravas, Italian Dumplings, grilled hangar steak, and sourdough companion. The size of most of the dishes made me laugh. I've had actual Spanish tapas in Spain and this would never fly there. The eggplant dip and the hamachi crudo were especially funny.
