One of the most affordable bakeries I've seen, and their constantly turning out sweets. A lot of the pastries you would see at this stall are more on the traditional, old school, seasonal side. Although DC might be known for a lot of highly specific and niche bakeries, this is a type of bakery where you go to get the classics, and just about anyone has a sentimental connection to one of their pastries. Flavors are not so experimental but the great impression they left was the nostalgia. Its such a delight to look at all their pies and cakes (and that they are still making them at a reasonable price), I opted to try their cannoli which had a crispy shattering shell with a not-to-sweet chilled ricotta filling. Our absolute favorite was their Rugelach, between chocolate and honey pecan, get both! The chocolate is on the dark side and pairs so well with the sweet almond of the dough. It's easy to get overwhelmed, but here's what I recommend: 1) Ice cream- it doesn't compare to nearby Jeni's, Captain Cookie or Moorenko's, but for the price and portion, it's perfect for kids. My toddler loves their strawberry ice cream. 2) Cakes- their chocolate cake is pretty good! 3) Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies- they are small, but a good snack. This was by far the most disappointing cupcake I have ever had in my life ! The cupcake was wasn't just the only thing for my one star but the customer service was also crappy. No greeting, no smile just you trying to figure out if your next and make your order. The cupcake tasted so fucking old so nasty my ten year old could make a better boxed cupcake and take over shop. This lemon cupcake tasted nothing like lemon, had a texture of weeks yes weeks plural weeks old texture. I'm not sure how they are open, none of the pastries looks all that appetizing but like it was made in someone's home kitchen. I'm not trying to bash so hard, but please go somewhere else. Purchased a whole cake yesterday. It was dry, the icing was greasy. Because it was six inches the 2 slices cut were 2/6 of the cake. Took it back today, I tried to be kind and stated the cake was not fresh. The shop keeper asked what did I want her to do. I offered a refund or another cake would do. She stated well almost half the cake is gone, so I said give me half a cake. She did provide me 1/2 of a cake. It's the attitude! Either the cake was stale or someone does not know what should be put out for purchase. Either way I should not have to drive back to your shop! She looked at me as though I was in the wrong for bringing her mess of a desert back. Small deserts from this vendor have been ok, but I will stay away from full cakes or pies unless a "date baked" is visible. The safest best is the half and half iced tea/lemonade and the tollhouse cookies sold by the pound. My friend pointed out the reason these cookies are consistently good is because they are the pre-made tollhouse cookie dough just scooped and baked. Nothing wrong with that since that's exactly how they're advertised, and good to know that's exactly what to expect! But in my experience, all of the other baked goods look much better than they taste. The price point for cupcakes and cookies isn't too bad, but the flavor and texture isn't worth it at all. I recently got a peach pastry that was hard on the edges, had no filling in the center, and was definitely made with canned peach pie filling. I'm sure I'll keep trying to find another winner since I'm such a frequent visitor of the market, so here's hoping I pick a good one! read more

Another DC institution! Wonderful little local place on the southern end of Eastern Market's South Hall. Fine Sweet Shop (last name of founder was actually Fine) has everything you need in a sweet shop: Fresh bread? check. Cupcakes(red velvet!), cookies(Hamantashen! black & white cookies!), and cakes in single servings, check. Pastries? Ice cream? Check. fresh lemonade and other assorted drinks? There's a whole range of smaller cakes (as low as $12) that you can pick up if you need one for a special occasion/present. In case it hasn't been expounded upon enough, love this little spot for how much variety they offer. I can vouch for the black and white cookies, although the cupcakes I've had have been a little dry. They also run out of their fresh bread rather quickly (nothing better than picking up ciabatte or a baguette after work for dinner, neh?) But the bread has always solidly delivered. And customer service has always been prompt and professional. More reasonably priced than a lot of the market, so 3.75 stars! read more

Yesterday at lunch time I ordered: - The walnut brownies so dry the edges were unedible - and we all know how many of us will live for the edge of a brownie, but these were so hard it was hard to bite into it) - The banana bread was completely dried out and flavorless. - The red velvet cupcake was the saddest pièce de résistance, so to speak. Also really dry, cloying sweet and the frosting was so dry it reminded me of really stiff overbaked meringue that you can turn into crumble. Since my first cupcake from Fine Sweete Shoppe a few years ago I've had the opportunity to sample additional sweets in hopes that my one cupcake experience was a fluke. I wish I could claim the contrary, but even supermarket cupcakes would do better in a pinch. Fine Sweet Shoppe has expanded their cupcake offerings from one to many, and I tried my luck again with the red velvet. A bland (albeit moist!) red cupcake topped with frosting that tasted suspiciously canned and overly sweet. The piped rose that topped the cupcake was DEFINITELY from a national brand tube or the Fine Sweet Shoppe bakers have amazing reproduction skills (and in that case I'd have to swing my stars in the opposite direction). Thumbs down. For my birthday my co-workers graciously bought me a cake from the FSS (apologies for looking a gift horse in the mouth, co-workers!). A yellow cake frosted with chocolate that mimicked my original cupcake experience - dry, bland cake with chocolate frosting that tasted... off? Like sub-par chocolate (I can't even compare it to, say, a Hershey's bar, because I happily eat those). The top of the cake was decorated with some quaint yellow roses, but the non-frosting flower area had a strange sheen, as if the top had been painted with a sugar syrup, the bakers perhaps thinking: "we'll lock in the moisture once we've frosted the cake!" I want so badly to have a cupcake source in the greater Capitol Hill area but I wouldn't wish these cupcakes (and cakes) on anyone, even in a pinch. How is it that we buy bread from these people every weekend and they are still so incredibly rude!? For example, today I picked up some French bread and was considering a desert for my kids. As I took a 20 second look at the case (after looking behind me to be sure more people weren't waiting, there was only 1 person), I was about to ask for a half pound of chocolate chip cookies and the cashier passed me off to her coworker to deal with me. Well, her coworker was already helping another couple so I just handed her my cash and left, instead of buying the cookies. I love the Sweet Shoppe and not just because of the extra "e" (-: The store is located inside Eastern Market. Super friendly staff despite the always long lines on the weekend. They have a peach pie - with sugar crystals on the crust - that is to DIE for and in my humble opinion the best Rugelach in town! They also have great bread (it used to be from the Uptown Bakery but I don't know if that is still true) - I can recommend the olive/rosemary. Mmmmmh. At first, The Sweet Shoppe seemed to be a delightful little corner of the Eastern Market. Offering everything from coffee to pastries to Ring Pops, it seems like an ideal place to get a morning fix before the start of the workday. On one occasion, I saw one of the cashiers raise her voice to a customer over some sort of monetary dispute. It seems the customer had received change for a $10 bill, although she had given the attendant a $20 bill. That was the last time I went to The Sweet Shoppe.
