Hubby defined his as heavily breaded, chewy flotsam. My MIL also thought the oysters were chewy. Hubby didn't give me a bite...knew it wasn't for me. Fries were great...nice and crisp. The fresh fish here is amazing! Fresh seafood arrives daily from the Pacific. Can't get any fresher! The deep fried halibut was amazing and had a LOT of white flaky fish, not a lot of batter of crust like most places. The tartar sauce was great as well, with a hint of dill. This is a walk-up small place that was recommended by many locals! The fish takes 10-15 minutes and comes out very hot and tasty. Finest At Sea was really a fish and chips place we stumbled across and didn't have really any intent to swing by. But as things have been panning out lately these unplanned stops have proven to be rewarding, fun and satisfying. Steve and I split the two piece Lingcod which was very good. Quite fresh and very good portions and preparation. The fries were also quite tasty and of good quality so no complaints really at all. There are lots of other options to try for different kinds of fish to have with your chips but cod has always been a fish of choice that we have enjoyed while having this meal. I'd definitely would make a return trip should I ever been in this neighborhood again! read more

Finest At Sea was recommended to my friend and I by our taxi driver while exploring Vancouver Island. He mentioned that it was one of the best places for fish and chips while also having a storefront/market to purchase fresh seafood from. Since we had just eaten lunch, we decided to check out the market. There was plenty of fresh seafood including candy salmon, candy sablefish, and salmon pot pie. We opted for the Spring Salmon Candy and Sablefish Candy which were also recommendations from the woman who was working there that day. We purchased those and were on our way. The woman who helped us was kind and patient as she explained some of the items in the pantry section as well as some popular items in the display case. Both fish candy were amazing. The Sablefish was sweeter and more tender than the salmon candy. The Salmon Candy had a smokier flavor with a texture that is similar to jerky. We enjoyed both, but enjoyed the Sablefish a tad more due to flavor and texture preferences. Overall, giving Finest At Sea a 5/5 for the market portion. We will definitely come back when in the area and would love to try the fish and chips as well as other offerings. The storefront is cute and has a bar area to eat at. If preferred, there is also a park nearby with benches. Highly recommend to anyone looking to bring home fresh seafood, especially the fish candy. read more

Finest at Sea was having a shrimp cookout when we were there and I've never had so much fun with shrimp. We opted for 1/2 pound boats of Cajun butter shrimp and cans of Phillip's tilt beer. Fantastic food! Seafood chowder is filled with fish, cornbread was perfect with it. Fresh halibut and Kennebunk fries were amazing. I would recommend paying with a credit card unless you have local currency. I paid with US dollars and the girl did not bother to point out. Their Restrooms were filthy0, toilet papers on floor, ran out of paper towels ( wife reported it to staff). Food: worst fish and chips. The Haibut was extra dry, tough, no flavor, breading was not cripsy. Fries - was over-cooked, but not crispy, Odd. No flavor. Salad- comes with vinaigrette ( supposed to ). Wife went to Order Counter to mention there was no dressing added.He "insisted" there was dressing on the salad . Duh, there wasn't .... We are looking into the salad, we tasted the lettuce...dude there IS no dressing on it. Finally, another young woman came by to give a small container of two different kind of dressing; neither was a vinaigrette dressing ?? By this time, we were like let's finish and get back to our Hotel in downtown Victoria. I do not like wasting food and after a very long sightseeing day, I punished myself to eat half of the fried Halibut. P.S.- using their wooden fork and knife. My wife and I were walking a long fisherman's wharf when we met Bob. We had the best conversation with him, and when we asked about where to have the best food he said at my restaurant. We walked over to finest at sea and had great fish and chips from the food truck, then join Bob in the seafood market to taste everything he had. Finest At Sea is easily the best fish & chips shop in the James Bay / Fisherman's Wharf area -- it reminds me of what one of the Wharf locations was like 13 years ago when we were here. Today I ordered a one-piece Halibut fish & chips and a cup of the seafood chowder. The generously sized piece of Halibut was perfectly cooked; with a golden brown crispy exterior, and gorgeously tender fish. Absolutely delicious with the tartar sauce. The skin-on fries were also expertly made, with a little crunch on the outside, yet soft and fluffy on the interior. The seafood chowder was also very good, chock full of salmon, shrimp, veggies, and potatoes. The broth was not super thick, and just lightly creamy. For my palate, I had to add quite a bit of pepper to get the flavor I wanted, but I like most things spicy. We were able to get a picnic table after we ordered, but they do have picnic blankets which you can borrow and take to the park across the street, which I thought was a nice touch. I'm glad we gave Finest At Sea a try, because it really completed my Victoria experience for this visit. read more

Based upon the reviews we opted to go to Finest At Sea rather than one of the restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf. We were very disappointed! I had ling cod fish and chips and my wife had the halibut fish and chips. We found the fish to be flavor less and the breading was thick, soggy and tough. The fries and cole slaw were nothing special/forgettable. Another in our party ordered immediately following us but did not receive her order until 10 minutes after ours. We found the prices to be the same as at Fisherman's Wharf. We did not buy anything at the attached fish store. read more

Walked over on a recommendation from a local and did not regret it. Delicious large portions of cod in the fish and chips. My daughter and I shared an order and enjoyed in the park across the street. This review is for the fish market specifically. To reach it, you walk past the picnic tables and tanks full of live shellfish. The store is small but well stocked with excellent smoked fish that works for picnic, souvenirs, or in my case both. They are well known, for their "salmon-on-a-stick" which is literally, very handy. Less handy, but equally good are smoked tuna, sable fish, and more. Added bonus for having salmon pepperoni that I brought back for my pescatarian brother who misses the flavor of smoked meat. Food, including the fish cakes and deviled eggs are made in house, frequently restocked and tasty. Best of all, you can bring it all back to the states as a souvenir with no problems from customs since it's cooked. read more

These are by far the freshest fish tacos in Victoria. You get a large portion of grilled fish in each and won't be leaving hungry. The slaw, salsa, and slightly spicy sauce are the perfect toppings. My only complaint is they used to offer a variety of hot sauces to add (I particularly loved a green chile sauce) but they now seem to only serve sriracha, which to me, does not offer the right flavour profile. Service is friendly but you should be prepared to wait a little for your order. I love sitting outside on a nice day, and have used their complimentary blankets and frisbees to cross the street and have a picnic in the park. read more

Hard to find a table if you come around lunch time, but the food is worth it. We came around 230 and had to wait about 20 minutes for our order so plan accordingly. One nice touch is all their containers and utensils are compostable, and ketchup, napkins, water are all self service (but not tarter sauce.) It's a small place with only outdoor seating which is great because Victoria is beautiful and the weather was perfect that day. The halibut filets are large and it comes with fries & coke slaw.
