Cod and chips. Very generously sized.
    Anthony W.

My second visit here resulted in this excellent halibut and chips. Halibut can often come out too dry, I find, but here it was perfectly moist, flaky, flavourful and super hot. It's, naturally, a tad more expensive than the cod I ordered the first time I came (somewhat smaller as well, but still decently sized), but the quality isn't any less impressive and justifies the higher price point. The batter was just as good as last time as well, served crispy but not too thick, starchy or oily. As with the previous visit, the chips were excellent - very hot inside and sufficiently crispy outside, while the coleslaw was simply made but just right in terms of the crunchy texture and the flavour of the dressing. Overall, this was a very enjoyable return visit and will not be my last!

Best fish and chips....ever! Yes, ever! We found Vic's by recommendation of the hotel manager where we were staying. Not far off the bus route and much closer to our hotel than the oft-touted Barb's in the Wharf area, we were wiling to take a chance on a reco from a local. We arrived at 3pm and the place was a bit dank and completely empty, so we weren't encouraged about our decision. After taking our seats and committing to drop a steep $36 on two, two-piece orders of halibut, my wife and I crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. A few minutes after, the cook came out and explained that the halibut was so fresh "it was literally falling apart." He just wanted to assure us that we'd get the amount of fish ordered but it may come in smaller fillets. Hey, as long as it tastes good, right? we joked with the cook. "Oh, you'll love it" was his reply. Talk about confidence! Boy did he know what he was talking about - we were in heaven. Okay, we ARE talking about fish and chips, not a Cassoulet, but the fish was perfectly cooked, with a great tasting batter that had enough flavor to enhance, but not overpower the halibut, and was fried to a golden brown. The hand cut fries were a nice touch too, and not soggy at all. Even the cole slaw was decent - not that you should ever consider cole slaw part of the fish and chips rating equation. Give Vic's a try, if it's anywhere near as good as the food we had, you'll be glad you did!

My friend and I went in for lunch, and had an excellent meal of fish and chips! The food was hot, fresh, and very tasty, and the service was great! Highly recommended.

Best place for fish & chips when in Victoria. We always come here when in town. Its become our family tradition. Love it!

All prepped and ready to eat.

Wasn't expecting too much when I first walked in to this place. Having grown up in the UK myself I usually have pretty high standards when it comes to chippies. I was impressed by Vic's cod, very flavourful and with a light batter that still crunched. I've also pretty much given up on finding a place in Canada that can make proper chips but Vic's has done a good job that I wouldn't mind returning here or asking for a second helping. Will definitely return here on my next visit to Victoria.

We found this place online and it was worth the search online and in town! Great service, great fish and chips! You'd never guess it from the sign outside- Chinese food place!!

My ahi tuna was perfectly cooked and artfully presented on couscous with kale. My wife had the sablefish and the flavor was rich and delicious. The fish was firm and flaky. Our only negative was that the tables on the outside deck were very close together. We had to move one of them to allow me to get into my chair. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you need a "quick bite" or have fussy kids who will become impatient. But, if you're ok to sit and enjoy a bit you will find the service fine. As a vegetarian, I was delighted that there were ample options for me to choose from without modifications necessary. This didn't stop me from ordering the delicious cavatelli with pesto and goat cheese for two nights in a row, but I loved having options! While dining with a larger group, the person who had the chicken and the person who had the short rib, both agreed their dishes were possibly the best preparation they'd ever had. The one complaint was that some in our group felt their dish was over salted. After enjoying the pastries at duo earlier in the day, I knew dessert was going to be worth it. We ordered the earl grey bar, the apple cake, and several other little bites. All were delighted with their selection. These desserts are on the smaller side (maybe about 4-5 bites each) so I do not recommend sharing. At breakfast, I had the avocado toast which was likewise delicious. They kept the coffee hot. Aura consistently exceeded my expectations.

Right at the door, they told us we'd be "needing to wait." We waited over 30 minutes before finally being seated. Once seated, another 20 minutes passed with no water and no acknowledgment from staff. It felt like we'd been placed in the restaurant's awkward introvert corner. Finally, a disrespectful waitress acknowledged us, took our drink orders, and then we waited another 20-30 minutes just for a simple glass of milk for our 10-year-old. By then, the kid was already eyeing the exit. Our waitress approached with the warmth and enthusiasm of a DMV employee on a Monday morning. Her attitude was dismissive and condescending from the start--acting like our presence was an imposition on her perfect day. We ordered: my partner chose the Wild Mushroom Agnolotti, I went for the Aura 6 oz Beef Striploin and a Margherita, and our child ordered a cheeseburger. Thirty minutes later, with our hungry and restless child losing patience, I politely asked for an update. The waitress responded with a condescending tone, "This isn't a fast food joint." I immediately asked to speak to the manager, who, to their credit, handled it professionally and did their best to de-escalate. The food finally arrived--and surprisingly, it was really good. The steak was solid, the agnolotti hit the mark, the burger kept the kid happy, and the Margherita was decent. After that, we had minimal interaction with our server, which honestly was a relief. The food was the bright spot amid an otherwise miserable experience. The slow, disorganized service, her snarky attitude, and the feeling that we were treated like second-class citizens the moment we arrived with a child left a terrible taste that no steak could remove. The high prices only made the disappointment sting more. I will never recommend Aura Waterfront to anyone visiting Victoria, BC. If you're traveling with kids, especially, steer clear--you'll be treated as an inconvenience rather than a valued guest. Save your money and sanity for somewhere that actually appreciates your business.
