Sesame Tofu and Brown Rice
Angel L.

This place makes me laugh so much. There's always so many people hating on it. At the same time, they're the ones in line! Firecracker is not that bad. If you come here expecting some authentic Chinese, now, that's bad. For goodness sakes, it's just a UW campus version Panda Express! (Whatever that may mean to you) The orange chicken, the fried/grilled/ whatever pork, are all okay. Probably, very unhealthy, but taste wise - okay. Typical Chinese American (but mostly American) cooking. Now, this place sucks! IF you're vegetarian. Other than the stir fry tofu and vegetables, some of the stuff at this place can taste really terrible. TERRIBLE. But, considering that most people are vegetarian and searching for an opinion on the regular food, this is my review.

Terrible food that is poorly cooked and way overpriced for what you do get. Anywhere else in the hub is a better option.

This was a cute sushi spot I had never heard of before since I don't come to this neighborhood…read moreoften. It was quiet when I came in for an early dinner on a weekend evening. My friend and I ordered a few different rolls and shared them. I thought all the fish was very fresh! I liked the simple but elegant presentation as well. I would certainly come back here in the future if I was in the area!

At my table, the ratings for food and service were 3.5 and 3…read more We had an assortment of nigri sushi, tempura, adamame, miso soup, a couple of different rolls, sake, and beers on tap. Tempura and miso was run off the mill, some nigri knocked it out of the ballpark such as toro, while other cuts were again standard. The uni looked darker than anything I've seen before and tasted, shall we say, a bit dry and potent. The rolls were okay, one better; the other had a bit of a fishy sub-aroma and was half left-over. Service was lackluster; the guy was a bit spaced out. The miso soup was forgotten, so was another order of sashimi. Also, we re-ordered some fatty tuna nigri but got served something horrible (like a piece of old, lean tuna instead) - here my spider sense was ringing as if we were intentially slipped some other cut ("they wont know the difference"). Or our server or the chef was slipping. Lackluster service and some fishyness gets a 3 star rating - could have been better and fresher. Not likely to return. Ambiance was middle of the road, neither loading ramp nor dark and cozy. They only have tables and counter seating, no booths. Of note, there is a bar across the street where they made a couple of nice after dinner cocktails - the better part of the evening.

It did seem like there were quite a few takeout orders, but the pace was so slow that the ENTIRE staff had the opportunity to take in a beautiful meal together mid-shift. That's not something you get to see live in a restaurant too often. But that's the type of family atmosphere and camaraderie that you can expect here. So bring your finest homies with you to Chef Liao for an outstanding meal in a place that feels like home. The service here appeared to be of the highest order, but that may once again be because we were dining alone. They might as well have brought out the white table cloth, candle and roses for us. I was immediately flooded with nostalgia once I took a glance at the menu. General Tso's chicken? It gave me memories of the Chinese restaurants from my childhood in Massachusetts that were catered to the American palate decades ago. A taste that is hard to find in Seattle, but a welcomed memory. We ordered a beef lo mein, some sort of crispy noodles, and salt and pepper prawns. You might not be able to tell by my pictures, but the portions here are enormous. Everything here appears the be built to feed a family of four. I brought my hungriest homie, and we still could not finish all of the grub that was allotted. It will be a true test of your grit and ambition if you decide to push further than we did. We ended up having such a good time here that they had to kick us out because they were closing down for the evening. The "Yap n Yakisoba" session will have to reconvene another time, I suppose. The food here was great, but I really appreciated talking to the staff. The gentleman who was taking our order told us that he was bringing his family on a river cruise vacation in Romania the next week, so they would be closed. We will be back with more friends soon, but I hope you enjoy your well-deserved time off sir!

Whether it's a rainy Seattle Tuesday or a sunny Saturday, this place is consistently buzzing. It's my absolute favorite spot to refuel after a long day of shopping or wandering around the UW campus. The Essentials: * The OG Pork Xiao Long Bao: You simply cannot come here without getting these. They are the gold standard of soup dumplings in the PNW. Each one is a perfect little explosion of savory broth. * Spicy Shrimp & Pork Wontons: This is a cult favorite. The chili oil sauce is legendary--I always order a side of Noodles with Minced Pork or Fried Rice just to soak up every last drop of that sauce. * Sautéed String Beans with Garlic: Seriously, how do they make green beans taste this addictive? They have that perfect "snap" and are loaded with savory garlic bits. The U Village Vibe: The space is beautiful--high ceilings, modern decor, and that iconic glass-walled kitchen where you can watch the "dumpling masters" at work. Even though it's always packed, the service is incredibly efficient. It feels like a well-oiled machine. Pro-Tips for Seattle Locals: 1. The Waitlist Strategy: This location easily gets a 90-120 minute wait during peak hours. Check in on the Yelp app before you even arrive. You can walk around Amazon Books or grab a coffee at Zoka while you wait for your text. 2. Parking: U Village parking is a labyrinth. Save yourself the headache and head straight for the North Parking Garage (near the Apple Store)--it usually has more turnover than the surface lots. 3. The Bar: If you're a party of 1 or 2, try to snag a seat at the bar. You get the full menu with way less wait time! Still the best dumplings in Seattle. Period.
